I think another factor involved is how a large majority of those who came (and went) due to the knuckles meme were on desktop, and the vrchat experience is almost totally difference when compared to in VR. Everything is closer and more personal in VR because there's no distance from you and what happens in vrchat around you.

Not saying anything negative about desktop users mind you, just that the experience is very different and that changes things for both parties.
