You could tag a model as private when you upload it though, and it will link that ID to your account to prevent others from using it

They're either stealing the avatar but copying the data, which would be difficult, or they just tell an avatar pedestal "use this players ID instead of your current ID" and click it

Basically it works because the avatar exists on the server and the ID tag gets stored on a pedestal. It will remain on the pedestal until the actual owner deletes the model from their VRChat account

Could also be that they modify the avatar ID stored in their saved avatars screen, just modify the ID to somebody elses ID, but I'm just guessing now

The best way to fight avatar theft is to maintain a copy on your drive. If it gets stolen delete the avatar from your account and clear the cache. Reupload the avatar and it should get a new Avatar ID number

You can't stop avatar stealing for certain, but it sounds like there's an easy way to do it, and they just need to make it difficult so that nobody will bother

Deleting the model from your VRChat account in Unity's manage uploaded content deletes the avatar ID from the server. Clearing the game's cache folder ensures you get a new ID number when you go to upload it again.
