I have no idea how VRchat is hosted other than that content is streamed from Amazon S3 services. Whether or not the actual gameplay servers are virtually run on amazon services is a mystery to me as I don't make a habit of packet sniffing my connection all the time.

To be able to swap at any time, you need to upload the avatar to your account via the VRChat SDK

But it wasn't the first avatar I picked up, so I don't know why I can swap to it any time.

Avatars can't be saved from pedistals. You have to upload through unity to keep it after logging out and in.

Correct. Switching to default avatars or to ones on Avatar servers doesn't change it, I can switch back to that Midna avatar any time
I haven't restarted since it happened, I'm guessing it might go away on restart
