what would the applications of this be? other than helping new players remember what certain classes do and in custom content, I don't really see the point of it

Yeah, the point would be custom content. IF it's better integrated into the game in the sequel, you'd end up seeing a dizzying variety of NPCs, too many to know off the top of your head unlike the vanilla ones
