In theory that would be great, since it's preferred to to keep what makes the X in XR together. But in practice I don't think that would change much. Since the forum mode is still a list view, questions with the less popular tags will still get pushed down and not get as much exposure, just as it is currently.
I think the burning question to answer first is: What's the current opinion about the forums? I think it's still lacking in some features. In addition to list view only, It's adds a lot of visual clutter, there's no way to sort or filter by tags, and the tags are tiny and hard to find without taking a minute to get familiar with everything, not everyone will do that and pay attention to them. Ideally there would be a place for people with VR only projects and AR only projects to connect right away. I personally think that in 5+ years from now when/if more projects are XR projects (AR/VR hybrids/MR Mixed Reality) that it would still be a drastically different boat then most VR only and AR only developers would be in, and constitute it's own MR channel, it would be a great place for developers using OpenXR compatible HMDs like Pimax, Pico, Varjo, ect with Unreal to connect.
I do think at least there is some discussion to be had if opening an XR category is worth it for the community. I know one of the most difficult decisions to make would be what to do with the current channel, since you wouldn't want to break things up further by archive everything in the channel.
I think that either splitting the channel, or creating an XR category would be beneficial. Since it's currently 1 channel encompassing 3 platforms
