#Dedicated place for programmers to vent

I think #lounge is working as expected. If others want a place that is more dedicated to being entirely goofy and only off topic, then maybe an #offtopic that is topic-guarded as "only silliness and memes" would make sense
Hm, #lounge versions for programmers, designers, artists and what not aren't the worsed idea, but not sure how often they would be used the way we planned.
We have the VCs layer out the same way soooo
They could be a forum with fixed channels/topics, to save space on the channel list
Maybe a good test for the idea of using forums for a compact chatting place, as mentioned a few times before
(need to verify)
Yeah, something akin to that programming parlour VC? Just the chat alternative.
I'm fine with this but my main thought is that lounge is where people can be silly and drift on topics, if we add a programmer lounge aren't we just making one more place to kick people out of into lounge?
that's what's nice about lounge: it's less structured, a place to just chat about whatever-- I don't see it as being intended strictly for "non-work" or "not unreal related" discussion, just discussion that isn't serving the purpose of asking and answering questions
if we add a programmer lounge aren't we just making one more place to kick people out of into lounge?
No. We are making space for more dedicated place to programmers. Where you can talk C++, Java or just meme about it, relate to other engines etc. It will offload also a ton of off-topic from #cpp itself, which is heavily used already anyway.
I still dont see why it matters, since it relates to a lot of people here anyway. Surely loungr should be about anything we wanna talk about, whether that be programming, sports, memes, random whatevers.
Its not like that talk disruptd much
You can still post your memes and such
Especoally seeing as you are the only one i have heard complain about it so far
Isn't that just #lounge ?
It is occupation!
I'm for a cpp-lounge channel 👍
I dunno that sounds like it was working as intended.
The other day, we had somebody who wanted to ask about c++ and specifically did not want to use Unreal Engine, so we sent them to #lounge according to the rules. That is just the most recent of many similar situations.
Why does somebody want to ask about not using Unreal Engine in an Unreal Engine server? I don't know.
If you make a "Programmer Lounge" that will just replace #cpp and we'd still send people to regular #lounge when they were not talking about programming. At least that's the future I see if we walk that path.
The crew from #cpp comes in #lounge very occasionally. Why is it our fault that #lounge isn't as active without us so we have an outsized impact?
Personally I think all these new channel requests are solutions looking for a problems.
The real issue is we have too many dead/zombie channels in my opinion. I think the annual stats really showed that only a handful of the channels have any real traffic.
If we consolidate them, we'll have more active channels which would allay several of the complaints about waiting a long time for a response on some channels, etc.
Additionally, with more general topics there would be less things "off topic" to send people to #lounge over....
with more general topics
That's why programmers lounge, artists, or else channel.
The "more general topics" discussed in my post come from combining channels not making more of them....
Making more channels (especially for specific lounges) just exacerbates the current issues.
Reminds me of the xkcd about standards...
I know I am necro'ing an old thread at this point but why not have a ccp 1 and cpp 2 channel? Oftentimes shit posting asides there are multiple conversations going on at once that are genuinely helpful.
I feel like we've struck a better balance since this thread was first posted /shrug
If cpp gets a forum of its own wouldnt the channel then become the programmer lounge? I actually prefer less structured conversation, this idea that BP and CPP dont intersect makes it difficult for people who ride the lines between groups.
