#We need a dedicated channel for Mover 2.0

For those of us that use it we need a common place to share things we’ve found and ask questions.

Due to its experimental nature at the moment, it likely will not be considered as a full channel until we see more interest in it. If we see enough interest, it may be considered.

I've been using Mover 2.0 for quite some time now and the amount of changes and work required to make this properly work at a good scale is so large, that I would also vote against making a dedicated channel for this. Other (experimental) features like this won't get a channel, so I doubt we will be adding one for Mover. You can gladly continue discussing it in #multiplayer .

On the other hand, if it takes a lot to get working, wouldn't s channel be a good idea as an info dump on what needs to happen?

Dang! Hopefully when it’s more popular we will get a channel. I do agree with @rare reef If someone as advanced as you struggling with it in my mind is grounds for building a dedicated community around it. Where you could share your findings and it wouldn’t get lost in a channel where people are asking about on rep functions or how to send an rpc. 🫩

Plus they are more and more pushing towards Chaos Mover, so the NPP one isn't gonna go exceptionally far.

My current suggestion for Mover is: Stay away from it. Use the CMC.

#

Epic has to properly commit to it first, before it makes sense to use it.
And then has to put a few months of work into it.

#

You gain almost no benefit from using it, other than it being modular.
The time is better invested in adding something modular to the CMC.
Mover is lacking tons and tons of features, has bugs en mass and its backend is seemingly being replaced already.

I join Cedric on this topic after having used it and struggled with adding things to it for 4 months now ..
Until there is some actual things to document about it .. which isn't the case right now .. #multiplayer has been enough of a place to discuss anything related to it at this point

I got something set up awhile ago it’s pretty stable but could definitely be improved. Wrote an article

I’ve been improving the Server Rewind system taught in this course by Stephen Ulibarri. It was a great starting point for what I needed in the types of games I want to make. However, there were a few…

I’ve actually posted this article in this discord before, would’ve been easier to find in a dedicated channel lmao 🤣

I’m guessing I should resubmit my request? CDPR using mover is kinda huge to say the least.

You have to ask how much they've modified it, though...

#

And if those modifications have made it back into the engine.

True! They are. The threaded movement code, the support for motion matching, the interop for the new animation framework and the MASS integration all made it into 5.6. It seems they worked directly with the team involved with Mover. Of course they probably have stuff they did that’s not public yet but. Some of the stuff is single player only but I’m led to believe their game won’t work without mover’s framework and it looks like epic plans to support it but we will see. Tomorrow the talk on the new animation framework might shed some more light on it.

Also, even if CDPR uses it, I don't think we will add a channel for it. There are tons and tons of systems in UE that don't and won't have their own channel.
We don't want tons and tons of channels, splitting the community and overwhelming users. CMC is more powerful than Mover and won't get its own channel either.

Meh, sounds like you're finding any reason now.. Lesser NPC's lol the entire movement system is mover your statements also make arguments for why it needs a channel. Now what if a dev is not working on a multiplayer game and has questions about mover? Do they post in multiplayer? What if someone wants to start migrating over to mover but don't because they find it too difficult or struggle and then they go to ask their question and it gets swallowed up in generic channels.

This server is called Unreal SOURCE not unreal "Popular Topic" Undocumented features that clearly have a home in epics ecosystem should be priority #1 when it comes to creating community.

The video doesn't show that Ciri or the Horse, or any of the enemies are using Mover. It only showcases the NPC work, where Mover is combined with Mass.
But if Ciri and everyone else also uses it, that's nice.

We aren't going to add a channel for every kind of feature.

Now what if a dev is not working on a multiplayer game and has questions about mover?
They can ask in #ue5-general , #cpp , #blueprint , or similar, depending on where it fits best. Similar to all the other hundreds of systems that exist in the Engine.

What if someone wants to start migrating over to mover but don't because they find it too difficult or struggle and then they go to ask their question and it gets swallowed up in generic channels.
As with all the other feature specific requests, if there is enough traffic then we can look into the option to add it. But we won't add channels that then end up dead. We have done so in the past for new systems and features of UE, and it didn't work out.

There are tons more features that have a home in epic's eco system. They won't get a channel. We have enough channels already.

You are not the first one to ask for a specific feature channel just because they are the ones starting to use it. We have been very clear in the past years that we don't want the channel list to grow even more if we can avoid it.

If you have a problem with that, feel free to contact Nick (@vagrant prism).

channels that then end up dead I think it's important to highlight this point, a dead channel has to stay there so people can search it, if we delete it after the initial discussions about mover 2.0 has died down then everyone has lost a resource, when we add a channel it needs to be a topic that has longevity

So who's idea was it to add the MASS channel? I see a few of the mods use it and it has had its own channel even when it was experimental. And before you edited I saw something about overwhelming users. There is an option to unfollow a channel category which I've done for things that don't concern me. You guys get to drop the hammer on other ideas. Let us put it up to a community vote or something. I saw a guy ask about a mutable channel which would be awesome but I'm guessing the mods don't use mutable. "Leader pose component is more powerful" I bet is the mindset. I could be wrong but it seems like you guys decide based on what you have going on in your own day to day projects.

I didn't edit? It would say "(edited)" at the end.
