A new generative AI was added to discord as a bot user. Doesn’t show up in the users list. Here is the post I learned it from (see attached image). May wish to ban this user from the discord: 1153984868804468756

I'll leave it open if anyone has possibly any actual evidence of maliciousness occurring, but as far as I can tell there is none.

As is often the case, the truth resides somewhere in the gap between polarized views. There are misunderstandings on both sides of this discussion.

Claim: Discord has not partnered with DomoAI in any capacity

While it's technically accurate that Discord has not formed a deep or strategic alliance with DomoAI, the reality is more nuanced. Discord did agree to prominently feature DomoAI in the App Directory, and DomoAI published a blog post about it with "Domo x Discord" in the title. Unsurprisingly, this has led many to perceive it as a partnership. In a sense, it is one — though not of the scope or depth that some are imagining.

Claim: DomoAI is secretly installed on every server

This stems from a misapprehension about Discord apps function — an understandable one, to be fair. Discord has not exactly excelled in clarifying this new app paradigm.

In brief: Discord now allows certain apps to be authorized at the user level, not just the server level. That means a user can grant an app permission to access their account, and subsequently invoke it in any server thast permits application commands. So no, DomoAI hasn't been clandestinely embedded into every server. But yes, it can be used broadly across servers, depending on their permission settings.

As a server owner and admin, I do find this frustrating. I would like the ability to selectively block apps since they can shape the content users generate and share in our server. Alas...

Claim: DomoAI is an app, not a bot

This is largely a matter of nomenclature, and again, Discord does itself no favors here. On Discord, an "app" is the umbrella term encompassing all installable programs — bots included. Apps such as our own Manny and Quinn include what's called a "bot user", which allows them to appear in the member list like a normal user. This setting, once enabled, cannot be undone —though it's not required. Many apps omit this feature, appearing only when their commands are called or via webhook responses.
