There should be a place for people who are interested in joining a volunteer project to be able to post there skills and interested so they could be contacted by volunteer projects that align with there interests. the Game Dev League discord has something similar to this with an open and closed status that each person puts in there post to let people know that they have joined a team or are no longer interested.

Why wouldn't those people wanting to join volunteer projects just monitor #volunteer-projects for something that aligns with their interests

i'm not sure but I have seen this on the Game Dev League discord where people that are open to it aren't actively looking at the posted projects

but they will respond and join a project if contacted
