Spend the longest time looking into real-time water.
I was surprised to see this aspect of games at such a low level of execution compared to characters/environments.
Here's something that I believe is very achievable and relatively cheap.
Note this doesn't cater to dynamic interaction (but could) and the splashes were thrown together quickly.
