#Add a #worldpartition channel

read the channel description of #level-design :)
Fair enough, but kind of confusing considering every other major feature gets it's own channel.
Who will look through the list and think level design is where to ask?
In fairness most people that post with issues have no trouble finding it.
Partitioning or level streaming?
Both? It's a broad topic that could even include HLODs to a large extent.
That's why it makes no sense to me to keep it in a level design channel where there are a million other things being discussed.
But if people don't care right now just leave it I guess , it will anyways happen eventually.
I've been considering renaming #level-design to #world-creation. It might be a more obvious name when looking for help.
The world creation tools in UE5 are indeed part of the level design process, but people browsing the channels are probably thinking of the tools, not the process.
that would exacerbate the amount of environment art questions and work in progress posts imo
Perhaps.
It can be difficult to decide what should be a channel vs. a category.
Or how specific a channel should be.
yeah for sure. I would be tempted to split it into level design and world partition
or leave it be. a world partition channel would probably be pretty dead as most of level design's history in my experience is landscape questions
Yeah. That's why I lean towards renaming the channel instead of splitting it.
We have a lot of support channels as it is. Nearly 100.
is it really that many?
it doesnt seem like that much when scrolling :P
Whoops, I was counting some extra categories and archived channels.
57 support channels, not counting voice chat.
That's still a lot.
that is a lot of channels
That's not counting Job Board, Community Creations, or Social, either.
In total we have 105 public channels.
i am in favour of a rename, since no actual level design gets discussed in #level-design anymore.
I just dont think world creation is quite it.
It's a lot to manage, and there's a danger of too much fragmentation. It's a delicate balance between covering as many topics as possible and making sure there's enough people in a channel to form a sub-community that can answer people's questions.
granted i also don't have any better ideas
World creation came to mind because it's how Epic refers to those tools broadly, so lots of people learning Unreal are adopting the term.
yeah even as is, there's too many dead channels
Yeah. 😦
I want to cover everything, but I also want to have enough people around a given topic.
yeah its even more frustrating becuase most of the dead channels don't really fit to be merged with anything else
its either too broad or too specific
Now that people can customize their channel list, I'm curious to see how sub-communities form and if our most popular channels change at all.
i didnt even know that was a thing tbh
Yeah! That gets really difficult for us because Unreal is so huge.
I resisted doing an everyone ping when I announced it, but maybe I should have. It's a pretty major change to the Discord UX.
thats pretty cool
There's now a searchable channel directory in id:browse.
And a new onboarding experience for new members, where their list is built dynamically based on their answers to the questions in id:customize.
just checked it out and it's a pretty neat system
I'm stoked about it. I think it makes our server less overwhelming for new folks.
if those tools are referred to as world creation then i am slightly more inclined towards it
for sure
I've seen "world creation" and "world building" from Epic, so either one might work.
These are examples from the EDC forum, official website, tutorials, and docs.
Even epic arent making it easy lol. They could at least keep it consistent 😆
lol I know.
It's not easy. You would not believe how much time goes into figuring out the categories for forums and learning resources.
I think world creation/building works well as a category name, but having a whole category with channels for world partition, landscape/terrain tools, water system, foliage, etc. is probably too granular.
A single channel might do the trick, but it goes against the conventions elsewhere in the server, where channels do get more granular sometimes.
The people we want to attract to said channel or category are probably primarily building environments. In addition to the tools I mentioned above, that may also involve things like the modeling tools, lighting, weather effects, etc. It is potentially very broad.
This is for Discord server feedback.
World Building could work.
🤷♂️
But yeah it might get dangerously close to an art showcase channel while it should remain technical.
It has a pretty bad habit of that one already :P
I suppose you could always try it out. If it doesn't work out it's not that bad to name it back.
Perhaps a pinned post explaining that it isn't a showcase channel or general "how does this look" channel may help as well
