A cool feature I saw in other big servers (Substance, Work-with-Indies, etc) is the weekly or bi-weekly voice-chat events, in which a 'Guest' is invited (typically a person working/running a AAA/AA studio/Art Community in general .. to talk about various things related to 2D/3D art, like tips and tricks, industry experience, etc. These are typically friends from our extended circles ..part of unreal community.. who want to give back to the community by way of teaching others, or to simply chat.

  • Typically there is a moderator of the session (not necessarily a permanent mod), just someone who can keep order, and is available in that time slot
  • A role-based notification in few days in advance, about the upcoming event
  • 1 to 3 hour session generally, depending on factors
  • Indie Devs who successfully published a game (both successful ones & failed launches) can share their experience.
  • 2D/3D artists can share their experience working at the studios
  • Programmers can talk about common pitfalls, and approaches to complex problems, etc.

PS: Had to add a 'Pinned Resources' tag, because can't post without a tag. Ignore that.

I like this idea, there are already some professionals with really interesting skill set, including some Epic staff, problem is time. Most of the time if you want to spend a few hours consulting a professional you would have to pay for it. Sure, there are probably some people on here that would be alright with discussing their experience in the industry for awhile, but there is a very small amount, and it may not be so interesting to cycle through the same set of people talking each week. How do the other servers go about keeping a steady supply of individuals to do this?

I think its because they invite mid-level artists instead of very senior or principal level artists in the case of artists. The mid-level people have two things more:

  • More time to teach the community
  • More eagerness to learn innovative and experimental techniques
