Hey folks. I'm building a new FAQ command for Manny, and I want to know: what are the most frequently asked questions you see every day in our community? Think of the ones that are so common, you wish you could reach for a canned response instead of writing it out each time.

For example, I see these ones a lot:
• When does Epic release free content on the marketplace?
• Will my 4.x project open in UE5?
• How much does it cost to release a game with UE5?

  • when 5.1
  • how do I disable/enable nanite/lumen/dx12
  • where can I find docs/tuts about X
  • Who is Jon Skeet?
  • I come from unity, how can I X in unreal.
  • I cant find quixel bridge related q's.
    come to mind.

Where's the MMO tutorial? 😛

#

Some sort of unity to unreal guide is probably a good idea.

But really, when 5.1?

#

I mean, FAQ needs answers too, eh, not only questions 😛

Aah, I imagine that in the FAQ.

Question: When will be UE 5.1 be released?
Manny: I dunno.

  • Which one to use for <insert project name>, UE4 or UE5?
  • Which one to learn/use, blueprint or c++?
Heard those two questions very often.

this is a meta post about frequently asked questions, if you have an actual specific question try #ue5-general @wind harness

speaking about frequently asked questions, what about the same question asked in multiple channels. Please have the bot clean those up and send a polite warning to read the #rules :)

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. I’ve got a decent set to start with now, and there will be an easy way to suggest new ones on the new website.

We need something on this bot that can explain this isn't an Epic Games run server

I used to run a modding Discord with slightly less than 10k people. I know that's smaller than Unreal Slackers, but it's somewhat in the same ballpark (?).

We implemented a faqbot, and had really, really positive results from it! While it can be a bit impersonal, it also saved the 'helpers' (not a role, just a description of those who helped) from a lot of burnout.

#

Here is my suggestions for you (things that worked for us, and I think will work for you as well):

  • Allow users to submit their own faqs. We control it via a role, and hand it out pretty liberally to anyone who wants to contribute.
  • Allow managing faqs from within discord. Our system is pretty gross to use, but the fact it's in discord means the faqs get a lot of attention, and stay pretty updated.
  • Use leventstein distance for faq search, rather than direct match. Our system allows multiple tags (e.g., multiplayer how-to, networking how-to) to map to the same FAQ, and they are soft-match searchable.
  • Where possible, focus on external linking. We maintain a few sources of information outside of the discord, and wherever possible we promote a format that looks like this: (example incoming):

Combining a snippet of text with a link is more powerful than either a wall of text, or a raw link.
