#Could we have a dedicated channel for playtesting multiplayer stuff?

That brings a whole host of other issues like people spreading malware instead of games.
I really like the idea, but yeah that's just an open invite to being ratted or something
fair point
wouldn't Antivirus help with that sort of thing? Although I guess if someone wanted to they could easily do malicious stuff for sure... sadge
Yeah.
If only there was some Oculus App Lab equivalent, it has a level of screening and security, then anyone you choose can download it from the meta store app lab directly. when you push a new build it just updates like it was something you bought from the store. I feel like I've heard about something in the works for this but I may be thinking of the unreal web stuff
You should probably do that type of stuff in dms with people u trust
if only html5 were supported....
And if the games are only from steam ?
Steam games can still be dodgy
You are more than welcome to use the Job Board to post a listing asking to recruit members for playtests or the like. We do not need a channel for this purpose. It also poses some security risks we can easily mitigate by not having this channel.
@woven vine I made a post exactly like this today with the same resulting conversation. Feel free to hit me up in DMs if you’re interested in playing each others game and exchanging playtests; I’ve been asking around various discords and the reaction has been that this is something many are excited about
Many are excited to have their own game play tested, I expect, not to spend 100s of hours testing somebody else's work. Imo at least. I'm sure there are some excited to play random unfinished games!
i've sent at least 50 DMs in the past 24 hours asking if people are down to be a part of a community where you playtest other peoples work in exchange for yours being playtested, and have recieved 100% positive interest
putting community building down on no basis and positioning it to be something selfish is crazy crazy crazy work to me
Then feel free to create a server (or even a thread on here) for sharing games. Or post on #1054845120236757103 or something.
There's nothing stopping you from organising.
i am
Good luck! Really. 🙂
thanks ❤️
I saw your other post about playtests channel. Just because the mods here don't see the value of something like this doesn't mean you're wrong or that your idea doesn't have value. Personally think any point made against this is flawed.
1.) Malware is handled at the individual level, and if that was really a concern then there are so many other things we should disable in the discord if this is considered a valid point. Why do we allow anyone to join this discord and DM anyone with mysterious links, spam, requests for freelance garbage. Even discord profiles like mine have links to who knows what. People can post links to external sites in the channels. Peoples projects or project pages on platforms could have qr codes that go to harmful places. So we can't opt out of something that's already being managed by each person's own decision making skills.
2.) People not reciprocating playtesting 1 for 1. I have definitely gotten more help than given. I'd probably also get more playtesters than I give. And that's completely fine and shouldn't be a reason for why playtesting channels aren't allowed. Maybe I'd spend a day playing other people's games. I know 1 things for sure, no harm comes to game development from having a space dedicated to people interested in playtesting games. QA is a skill and people in the game Industry start there sometimes. This channel could be that for them.
3.) Work in progress channel is about finding interest in a game that might be finished one day, or it's about announcing a page for wishlisting, or it's about a mechanic someone made.. not where anyone would go looking to help playtest. I wouldn't post there looking for playtesters. Playtesting needs its own space for conversation.
Unreal Source has an awesome pool of people that can make their own choices about who they trust and how they spend their time. If they don't want to playtest or take a chance on a game, they don't have to use the channel. People who need this sort of engagement will.
It's more important for this game development community to help with improving the equity of Unreal Engine experiences than it is its job to protect the world from digital threats.
@rare ridge as I said there is a lot of interest in it and I plan to actually build this. Lmk if you’re interested. Separately I live in SF - is there a gamedev community here? Going off of your server name
