It's the first time the question has come up, and I stand by the .apk being the limit for this jam but I will look into if we have to change that. Content could be downloaded mid game etc as well, which would require a different workflow for checking the size of the game either way. Good questions.

I picked up a Humble Bundle a couple of days before the event. I have debating trying out Unreal and that made the decision. That's when I learned about the jam....and sooo, it has been...hectic.

I had an awesome game with awesome mechanics (at least for a first time dev) and during a twitch stream of a playthrough of the submissions, the person was getting crashes, because unbenounced to me, i had uploaded the wrong file ( a previous version prior to bug fixes) but it was on me for lack of file/folder hierarchy

I finished God of War in the past few months and I'm still enthralled, so the MegaJam was the perfect opportunity to make something inspired by it. The jam theme was translated into a Valkyrie being sent down to Earth to deal with a disturbance. I wanted to make it a little more cinematic, but it might just end up being a brawler at this rate. Will continue with it a tiny bit more after the jam, though.
There's a subtle particle effect attached to the ultimate ability that faintly outlines her wings, which you can see at the end.
I finished God of War in the past few months and I still can't stop thinking about it. Had to try something for the jam! There's still so much to do, though....

So I have a quick question that I'm not sure where to ask it. I have a book actor that has a static mesh that is set by the construction script using a BookType Int and BookList staticmesh array. What I wanted to know is if there was a way inside the editor to press a button and randomize the int without me having to manualy set it. This is purely for level building purposes
only way I could think of right now is to add a bool value and have it randomize the number when it gets set to true

So in order to make an editor "randomize" button I made a bool that when true would randomize the book selector int, set the bool back to false and then set the static mesh

I Package my game Everyday. if its a game jam game i probably do it eveyr 2 hours
like for example, did you know ue4 has VR plugin dependencies even if you don't use VR and that can prevent you from packaging?

yeah, i spent the first day just trying to get an empty/blank project down to as small as size as possible for the 100mb challenge

Does the Get Actors of Class node get the actors in a particular order? for example, if 3 actors were named Meteor1, Meteo2, Meteor3. Would it store them in an arrayin that order or is it random?

I don't know really, I remember being so annoyed by font licenses for one of my games that I considered possibly creating my own font just to get around it.
Even the ones that say 100% free on some websites aren't always exactly free to use.
Usually it'll say something along the lines of "app license"

I have been bouncing around the idea of doing my next jam game with only materials/textures provided in the engine/editor but remixed ingame

yeah this epic mega jam definitely a doubled since last year
So I got the main menu to work with controller input which im super happy with . but the moment i launch the game [packaged build] or press play in editor i always have to focus onto the window by left clicking. In order to do that i left click on the window/game but once i do that my buttons on the menu are no longer focussed... : / any ideas how to automatically focus game window upon launch?

I also like to reset focus to it on focus lost events in case of alt tabs
However there's a reason I didn't support controller in this jam entry ๐ UMG controller support is a nightmare

You can even run it on tick to contiusouly check if player has focus on widget

This is a small game I made for Epic Game's Megajam. Was the only person on my team and I didn't manage to get it to the level I wanted but I still had a lot...
The space cat was suppose to be the reason for the gravity anomaly and he would move around the room pushing (playing) with things and messing with any work you would have completed

Does anybody know like an average to the length of game jam games?i understand it varies drastically but idk, not sure how long i should make my level
@wintry beacon You want to pack as much quality in as little size as you can in general for game jams, long games especially with better features toward the end will be overlooked more than games that show what it has upfront

Just don't make it short enough that it detracts from enjoying the game, over before it begun sort of thing

Man I ended up with a Team for the GameJam and not 100% proud of the game we developed and it's not finish
Some games end up like that, but you should always be proud with what you makes as it makes you a better developer in the long run as you learn from it.
that is true, I'm just not proud with the stress I got from the team and how long it's taking them, I actaully did another all nighter

I remember reading articles about game jams and one of the most important tips i got was : Make sure every member is on the same page in regards to goals and skill level.
Maybe some people are just doing it for fun, casually. Others want to win and get first place! Others just want to try something challenging and learn whether they have a fully complete game or not
yeah once this ends it's back to my own personal projects and no Jam deadline
So idk maybe u n ur team members have different goals in mind\
Maybe, some seem to lack proper direction on developing a game in a good set of time
@sonic echo yeah i understand. i mean this is my first game jam and it was tough... a lot of internal conflict. made me question not wanting to do a game jam with them again. but idk its a stressful event so it happens. what i love about game jams is that it really just forces to do develop quickly and efficiently.

just a heads up, when scanning 4.23 builds with virustotal, it seems to have one false positive: Cylance: Unsafe
I've verified this with two different jam entry zips from the itch and also from my own 4.23 build test
basically it flags the tiny launcher exe at the root of the folder

also doubt any judge would give any extra on jam entry actually having pause menu
game not having checkpoints though....
there's been plenty of jam games where you really should have had checkpoints
in a platforming side scroller
it totally depends on the gameplay
with very difficult jumps
on platformers, if you have game over scenario, you'd want checkpoints
because it can be frustrating to always start from zero
if you don't die and can redo the jumps, you can do without
and if you haven't really designed checkpoints in yet, I wouldn't really bother
as it's more likely that everything breaks at this stage ๐
with my very few mechanics I've mainly had a very few node as possible approach
basically you'd need to be able to reset the game states to what they were at the last checkpoint
I think mucking around with game states
is a bit beyond me at this point, that'll have to be for a future project

I'm using voxel plugin for the bulk of the landscape, and lots of meshes made in blender

I moved things around too much lol. My ocd got the better of me and made the mistake of trying to delete folders (I thought) I didnt need, and moving the assets around to be more organized. But it ended up sxrewing me at the end.
Ahh, I've had the occasional issue moving things around
For example, when I added assets from epic into my project, I would move them from the default folder hierarchy into my hierarchy.

when working by myself, I tend to avoid worring about folder heirachy and style too much, filter and search works well
with a projects own files all in their own folder, they don't get mixed up with anything else
I'll def look into that. Heck I may just set up a folder hierarchy on my computer, make a new project, and the copy/paste it into the project folder
So, the root directory can be mostly grouping where assets came from
a new project can have just the projects name again as a folder in content (like PROJECTNAME/Content/PROJECTNAME/)
Then even if stuff is migrated to a new project, it is kinda organised by where it came from
I think I was just worried about the editor packaging assets that were not vital to the project
no worries on that front
in proejct settings you can select "package only maps" and give it a list of maps
will only pack things that those maps depend on

Yeah, I'm skipping cats, aiming for VR - but seeing that I think my chances are fairly slim
the biggest things I've learned from this week was, mainly getting a character to work in ue4, and dealing with a different set of level design problems
Still in with a chance, my game looks nice, is fun if you like that kinda thing - does not have checkpoints, but does let you rewind time to avoid mistakes
I'm happy Unreal has a "Saved" folder that contains periodic backups of previous blueprints.
One of my blueprints decided to go corrupt, somehow it decided to error up my project a lot later (5 hours)
Making it impossible to open the project getting stuck at 70%. Next time I should really use source control..

I'm trying to spawn an actor based on class but once I put the spawn node in my project I'm unable to open it anymore, until I remove the blueprint that contains it.
My guess would be that the issue is related to the derived C++ class. Has anyone here experienced this issue before?

@zinc juniper Name changing or removing anything in class and class it selfcan cause this, don't use hot reload in those cases, don't save blueprint if you did used hot reaload, remove things from blueprint related yt what you about to change then compile

so it ok if it crosses 1GB after zip
you can enable compression of packages in packeing and oyu gonna get similar size

I hate unreal engine scare errors... I call them like that because they appear in the worst situations possible. And a quick restart fixes everything for those errors... 10 secs earlier... "You don't have an unreal engine version installed" I mean is the engine trolling me on purpose? ๐ anyways the build is done for the jam.
