need some opinions on this:
typically in games, you're right handed, but you still use the LMB. if im using equipment in both of my player's hands, should i maintain the LMB -> right hand, or should i swap it to left hand now?
i feel like it's intuitive to use LMB for right hand and RMB for left hand but maybe i'm alone on this
@slate salmon if it helps in Minecraft the sword is equipped in the right hand of the character but the player presses LMB, and if you have a shield in the characters left hand the player presses the RMB

I believe it is better to not make the individual hands react to the selected button but instead have the item listen to specific buttons.
again using Minecraft as an example, if a 'placable' item is in the right hand it can be placed by pressing RMB, but if the 'placable' item is in the left hand and a 'tool' in the right it is still RMB to place
very true, that makes sense. it would be confusing if the button to place the block switched when you moved it to the other hand
LMB (Attack/Mine), RMB (Place/Interact), if both hands have a Place/Interact use the one in right hand

Under 100 MB seems tough. I remember trying to get HTML5 jam builds down in size and even my tiny few hour project busted that after removing unused starter content

Yeah they both say that (even assets sourced not from marketplace asset store - non-original), but the itch rules seem more permissive for previously created original assets
It's fine.. but I was thinking to take an old dusty game and reinventing it (usually against jam spirit). I guess as long as I only take the idea and remake stuff it's fine ie: game 1: the alpha crap, game 2: the coin flip

@stable kiln from what i know you can export with indie version, but you need to activate the license for it
im on apprentice still this is kinda convoluted
the apprentice version is the free version from what i know
and does not include the export functions
i actually quit somewhere here lat time i tried to install houdini, the lincense server was down back then and never tried again
if you requested the free license for indie version you can activated from the license administrator thing, and you have more docs in the email
activating your product like this is kinda user unfriendly
i cant seem to find the licence administrator

If I may ask, how do you understand the theme ? DO you have to take the counterpart of what's made usualy in game like "hey You are a zombie and people want to shoot you in the head" or do you understand it as "hey every action you make in the game have two side" ?

it's out of sync because the focus isn't on the editor, it was on the app I used to capture the gif
the text on the side still says "good" too so it must have skipped a physics update but still had the red effect from the Post process

Hey Edwin you would do that in the materials using a custom depth mask. basically you have 3 meshes each with there own materials. one is the object you want invisible, one is the glass for the window, and one is a mesh that is not rendered in the main pass, but is rendered in the custom depth pass.

@civic dock (or whoever made Nano) you may be able to trim off an additional 32mb if you haven't changed the DefaultBloomKernel. By default it's a 2048 HDR texture. I don't know if you can override it via a template or not, maybe you can override the ini file that sets the default for the engine, and that might prevent it from getting packaged.
Given that that's 42% of your 76mb package, seems worth investigating :p
That texture is disabled on mobile, so yes actually :p
But given that the Nano template only targets Windows, I suspect that is not possible here

@scarlet thunder I've looked into doing that with a package blacklist, but I've had no luck getting that feature to work.
Also, removing the file would only shave off about 10-12MB. That 76MB is compressed. ๐
The only way I've been able to remove it is excluding the EngineMaterials directory in Project Settings โ Packaging, but that's unsafe and causes lots of annoying errors.
@civic dock Can you override an engine ini using a template/game ini?
I think it's only packaged in because it's referenced by the engine ini, so if you override that to a different texture you can swap it for a much smaller texture.

Yea for the other 4 jams I participated in I had no issue finding inspiration, but for this one it's a bit more difficult. I tried not to involve coins since that will be 80% of the submissions. But I think I got the basic idea now.

Not really, if the package is too big means the assets I use (for example some parangon assets) will never fit with all I want to add in the game, without the polish I loose interest in my own game ^^, for someone who's not an artist, what's the point of a marketplace takeover where you can't use marketplace assets ๐

Yea, last jam I mixed a wide open level with a character from Paragon and created a Sequence, and once I was done with the Sequence and save the level, that level would be corrupted and I couldn't open the game project. I managed to "fix" the project by opening it in another way and removing the level but I tried doing the same thing 3 times and it would always create a corrupted Level for some reason ๐ฆ
You always need to do a test package multiple times during the jam ๐

In lieu of using marketplace assets, I have a question if somebody could help. I'

if I migrate a level to a blank project does it also migrate a copy of all the assets used? Or would I have to manually put in everything I want?
If you use the Migrate tool, all of the dependencies will come with it.
Right-click the level in the Content Browser โ Asset Actions โ Migrate
It will list out all the dependencies it detects before performing the migation.

How is everyone doing on the gameJam Today?
Is it allowed to use to ActionRPG project as a base for an entry? I mean, changing character and environment assets, adapting the logic/flow to whatever idea I have. Basically, stripping it down to be used as a framework for something else.

Haha ok so having started a bit late on the jam at around midday today, here's my initial bit of progress (game won't actually play like this, just using the top-down pawn right now). Spent most of my time just getting everything together, designing, beginning work on actual gameplay systems, and throwing some stuff into the scene. I've got a decent enough plan for what's to come, but here's hoping I can get it done in 2 days.

that's pretty cool, how's the coin integrated into the game? I see it said to pick one up at the altar and it giving buffs/nerfs
the player will have a coin that they can toss and as they toss it, the faces change randomly.
when you catch it, youll have some random face that represent a "trait", ie, destruction, illumination, mobility, etc.
if you choose to flip to the other side of the coin at this point, you will either get a blessing or a curse related to the trait
if you get a destruction blessing for example, all the enemies are destroyed, but if you get a destruction curse, the coin is destroyed; thats when you have to find another
later on, the coin will be used in another mechanic that involves completing the level, havent started that yet though, right now it's basically a random status generator ๐

you could ask in the BP channel with a screenshot, they always helped when I had a problem
perhaps your counter is going past 1? i usually avoid using == and use >= or <= just in case
i asked but no response, it would be hard to take a screenshot

yeah I really like the flip animation
the hand meshes came from an IronBelly pack but the animations were done by me :D

if you character is too tiny, just change the eye height and it should be fine. better than changing everything else though.

I've run into issues with it crashing on my laptop in the past when unplugged, personal theory was it had something to do with GPU

As far as I know, assets that are not referenced in any of your levels will not be cooked unless you explicitly say so in Project Settings.

I don't believe any premade content ever hurt your score, it just didn't add to it
Due to that, you can use royalty free music from a source other than the UE4 market place, but they will judge it as if it was not on the project
well i think they look more at the full package, cant really tune out the overall quality
there is soem free music on the MP tho

not sure what this unreal studio does, but sequencer has some unexpected results from time to time
few weird bugs and messes with ur camera speed
sometimes i fly 2 KM in half a sec on camera speed 1 in editor
cuz it picks the spped of my cinematic camera im sending from 1 place to other side of the lvl for next shot and editor camera just takes it over
have to a bunch of stuff blind cuz it wont show up in seq unless the gamethread is running or something
it's because your keys are set up to blend rather than snap
so it'll blend through that 2km
nah it changes my vieuwport camera

most def a bug and not as intended shouldnt go light speed trough editor with cameraspeed 1
i think most of their camera movement is done in external software
