The thing is, we wanted to make the story more than that. And more profound so that when you got to the end (well the dialogue is all there) you discover that the reality of your actions is innaccurate and so what you think is real while you play and your actions
Are innacurate
If someone plays it to the end they'll understand most likely
There supposed to be cut scenes to iterate more on that, but yeah, 7 days goes by quick
Still cant sleep from the game jam ๐ค
Ended first day of streaming, played 37 entries out od 210 so far, i be resuming around 8PM CET
is there anyone else besides Shadowriver and PartlyAtomic streaming the submission playthrough?
@hidden flicker Thanks for the heads up... but was asleep (also, who is shadow?)
ahh, shadow is @gaunt copper ?
catching recording now
not being able to always freely rotate camera is not a feature ๐ฆ
I think in my game there is too much "you must look over edges" Which is also hard, as it is easy to slip off with the custom character model... perhaps it could work better in third person
oh god the trees... why did I not disable collision
or tag them so they cannot be linetraced
Outdoors should have been played first really - it is dev/testing level. Portal there is not needed for anything ๐
@gaunt copper Just finished watching your play of my game! Nice one - I enjoyed watching and learned more about what I should have done differently. (will make some tweaks to the game now)
@oblique cairn when you play test your game you do it with gamepad?
@hidden flicker no. Good point, I even have a gamepad, but never normally use a gamepad in a first person (or similar "look around" kind of game, like them for driving and similar though
will give it a quick test now to make sure it is sane
Nah i thought you did, because not being able to rotate the camera is a common on mouse when people forget to lock the mouse to viewport
People = me
no the camera is really weird for some reason, I was locked to 90 degrees on any axis for a while
and then suddenly it fixed itself for the entire game o.O
The camera is a slghtly strange setup, to work with the player rotation, I may have made a mistake somewhere
seems fine testing locally though
Mostly been testing in PIE - could do with more time on the shipping build perhaps...
@minor hemlock Cheers for trying my document torture simulator, you had me worried at the start but you made it to the second from last level. ๐
what are the extra sorting criteria I could have unlocked?
Haha... the last level is more of the same but there's more complexity. There's a phone that rings and some tricky item placement.
You can use Ctrl+1-5 to select levels fyi.
especially the level with the archive that made me move the bomb
Yea that's a good one hah. I almost didn't include it but got some good feedback on that.
Good to see moments like that in a game - particularly when watching someone else play ๐
lol @gaunt copper ๐ watching you play anomaly.. you got the custom sound spiders twice in a row! immediately after mentioning it was random (which it is, 1 in 25 I think)
go buy a lottery ticket, the luck is with you
So shadow streaming in about 48 min?
Wanna see if any games are as good as mine ๐
Mouse issues sometimes only show in packaged or standalone builds
Remember that
Its probably just set input mode game only and set mouse to capture always (or one of those settings, i always forget tthe right one) i had that issue where the camera could only rotate 180 degrees but really it was just the mouse locking at the screen edges
And only in packaged build so i released the game
And the first person to play it said something weird with camera ๐
hey all! I updated the stream spreadsheet with shadowrivers latest streams: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OuYRBRw8XyNRzRxZdxCat8ApogzklCK8Nw4SmpufJvg/edit?usp=sharing
awesome
yours is on the list \o/
gonna watch ShadowRiver's attempt at it now ๐
hahaha @gaunt copper - glad you recognised the compile success / fail sounds xD
all of the sounds in the game are actually from the editor
all of them
I didn't even notice that
even the ambient hums and stuff are modified editor noises
The compile success sound just made me feel good and fuzzy inside. Guess that's what you intended
๐
That's some real meta-jamming there
I deliberately didn't use any external assets for the entire game
Use sounds the judges will be susceptible to
so many people don't find that first yellow ball, was worried about that
it's kinda hard to put something invisible in an obvious place
I'm still working on the game though
next puzzle involves a portal you can rotate to rotate the target room
also portals that change colours of things
i be little late, gonna resume in max 1 hour
it amuses me that you grew / shrank yourself multiple times and didn't even realise it xD
@maiden loom which was your game
a little buggy, but I'm pleased with how it came out
didn't have a lot of time to work on it (just the weekend)
@maiden loom biggest problem I had was you didn't preserve size on respawn ๐
haha
@glass fossil it's linked on the name
that was so gits like you who shrank themselves so small they fell through perfectly normal floors could keep playing :p
๐คท
though losing the connectcube behind a door you glitched behind in the process was just karma :p
Btw who is the person commenting on twitch chat as UnrealEngine account
Tim or Amanda?
was someone?
oh god, watching Shadowriver struggle with this is painful, hahaha
Lol
the people watching are getting it xD
it's been Tim every time I've seen it, but maybe amanda goes around trolling as UnrealEngine occasionally too ๐
hehe
@maiden loom watching shadowriver get stuck on a boulder in the path in Anomaly and then just jumping over it rather than recognizing and scanning it was painful
but I also did that in your game, I might go back and watch my vod to see how many times I missed the green ball at the end
hahaha
that green ball, oh man
he hasn't found it yet either
IT'S RIGHT THERE DAMNIT
so honestly the only reason I figured out the initial yellow ball and final green ball was because someone on chat mentioned that they exist lol
You have to make it emissive with 100x multiplier on color
And add lens flares to really show that
haha
crank the bloom
I had it at 3 in final build lol
make it look like a 2007 era AAA game
My way of fixing the game being too dark "just set the bloom to like, 10"
I saw someone stream a game like that..
and the bloom was so high the editor widgets were affected
Lmao
I'm waiting for someone to start streaming
Especially shadowriver, he has a scoring system
And he's pretty funny :p
Shit he's here delete all evidence
bah, shadowriver had a different door bug out, heh
I wish I had added some more sound to my game
Like birds
And other wind variation
I had time but I was too lazy
Ping me when shadowriver starts streaming
judging by how long he's taking with the puzzle, I'll be watching this for at least another two hours
i assumed it was aa bug do decided to solve it
@gaunt copper - did you actually manage to finish my game?
yes
too hard xD?
the most confusing part is getying out green box
Start stream
yeah, that's easy but not obvious
not that hard
there was puzzle entry that i rage quit on very beging after spinin circles for many minutes
oh dear xD
I'm gonna keep working on the game, so if you have any proper feedback it's appreciated ^^
proper feedback
the video is super helpful
Sounds like an insult to me
lol
Same as "you disappointed me"
it's all good, when people miss important concepts it means I need to explain them better
"Rusty cage - the hearse song" is so damn good
lol, I'm up to the bit where he realises he needs the green ball, and also hasn't found it
definitely need to change the green ball xD
it's interesting - both atomic and shadowriver scanned the empty space, but not the walls, looking for stuff
and missed the green ball right in the middle of the room as a result
some sort of decal only visible through mirror would be good for that
argh, scan the pillar already #ragequit
or just change the location entirely, I think
once I found it I knew what to do, which kind of sucked
kind of aimless, then suddenly oh there it is ๐ฆ
yeah
argh, he's scanning it and still missing it, lmao
he skipped the green ball by glitching it, hahaha
@gaunt copper stream when
starting up soon
Resuming my UE4 MegaJam 2018 playthough marathon, 173 to go and it's not even seasonal jam entry amount yet, so hop in to see lot of entries! ^^ https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver #ue4 #ue4jam #gamedev
awesome
Hi guys, seeing how Victor Burgos whatever-ed my entry, Color Night Fever (to be fair, I put no effort in UX for the menus). And nothing should be in Chinese btw..
It's a multiplayer game on LAN and (maybe) Steam online subsystem. I did it to force myself to do network functionalities by myself. My second computer died on Tuesday when I was about to test (and probably debug) the gameplay game mode and player controller. Sooo I might be lucky, it might work...
But if anyone test it, be aware that you can't launch the session (button start session) until all players have chosen a color (button "chose color"). It's possible to play solo, but the only interest would be that you'll win. Several instances on the same computer don't work unfortunately.
resuming stream adter supper break hop in https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver :p
@maiden loom Can you point me in the right direction to read up around the method you used to have someone objects selectively render from your scene capture?
I was thinking of some hackey method, like using "only visible to owner" and making the scenecapture owner, but suspect this is not a good way
Had a go at making a better trailer for my little game based on some feedback: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGbVAZ05Rp0
This is a game about relativity, impossible structures, and finding your way out. you can give it a go at https://unscher.com Video Music is Prelude No. 19 b...
Yeah i thought unscher was a really cool puzzle watching shadowriver play it... i have yet to play any of the games tho, catching up with life tasks after a jam is over lol
I like that ".com" in times New Roman at the last cut
Times New Roman is the only font, it's the best /s
๐
But the game and trailer looks good
@oblique cairn - that's the trick. Objects aren't selectively being captured
Every wall, ball, door, lock etc is an actor that handles.its own duplication with a set of rules
Also the number one source of bugs xD
those damn moths get everywhere
darn moths
@wintry orchid @hidden flicker @glass fossil Thanks ๐ I'll try and make another better trailer after making the game better perhaps...
@maiden loom Not sure I understand - you mean you have a whole second "world" nearby that you are capturing from? Sounds like an interesting solution ๐
Very nice - well to me it seemed to work very well indeed, both in my own testing and seeing others play!
How do you even make portals like that?
Screen aligned Render target?
@oblique cairn
@glass fossil yes - I followed a tutorial (thought I linked on itch page, will check and link here) - then extended it to work a fair bit better
Special thanks to the portal tutorial by FusedVR
gah
@glass fossil this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F28NKqG7ce8&t=5s
Beyond what he shows, I skipped using the levelBP, made self-contained actors that ref each other, use ontick instead of onbeginoverlap (checking the . product of the portals forward and the relative players velocity - so in english "if touching and moving towards portal, teleport" and perhaps another small change or two too)
Finally! We got around to do doing a UE4 tutorial on a topic people have been dying for, a seamless portal door effect! This one was inspired by a post we sa...
oh - I also setup the clip plane, - using portals location and fwd vector, not important when near the portal, but without it things can get weird
and disable portals when the players camera is behind them, for performance (by disabling capture every frame and capture on movement)
On dot product for optimisation yes?
If horizontal dot from player to portal is less than like .2 then disable
@glass fossil I am doing rendering_enabled = dot( norm(camera.pos-portal.pos), portal.fwd ) > 0
in bp, not pesudocode ๐
May have gotten the sub or compare backwards there
Before doing that, I tried another method, checking "was recently rendered" - but it returned true too much, may be good to mix it in with an and if you have quite a few portals that can be occluded (or otherwise not rendered)
Though - not sure how good a portal method this really is, I think with quite a bit of work it can sure get better, but may be worth considering other approaches too (probably ones involving C++)
I remember a video from a few years ago, a guy making a nice portal game, that supported physics of object partially in portals, and portals of different scales, that rescale objects
really I'd like to do some stuff like that
https://youtu.be/V_hF_wy0dHs?t=38 jesus, 10 years ago...
just another quick test as i work on the portals... first release is this summer, we need to get this up and going ASAP!
scaling portals should not be too hard, even in BP, but I think nice physics like that would require using C++ to intercept the physics collisions
my portals were super basic but probably work similarly to the ones in that tutorial
they also always rendered - I didn't do much in the way of optimisation
but then it was theoretically possible to connect any of them together, so....
that seesaw video has a nice implementation
I was using dynamic lighting at first - never really used static lighting until this jam, but when I had a few portals, and a few vines (pre opt by combining actors) I was getting sub 15fps
now 120 for the same scene! ( I also added LODs to most meshes - love epic for having that easy copy/paste mechanic)
lighting in mine was 100% dynamic
I think I could have kept dynamic lighting after the other optimisation fixes - been playing with LPV recently and really like it
did a dynamc lit version of epics "lightroom" - it can end up looking as nice as static lighting IMO!
on an unrelated note - hunting bugs - removed voxelplugin (even though I really like it) and upgraded to 4.21 and things seem more stable, but still had a similar looking crash
I do suspect the space shader plugin, but really am not sure what's up
I'm always wary of third party stuff like that because it's hard to know how well it wa sbuilt
I'd probably remove those over time with custom built alternatives
then you know exactly what you need and can build towards your specific requirements
kinda important when you're doing rendering heavy stuff, hehe
Voxelplugin I'd rather like to help more getting it working correctly
skybox - I'm not tempted to try and recreate something better than this, will probably have a dig around in it too and submit a bug report if poss
but If I try to work more, and see more crashes of the same kind, will try and confirm where the issue is actually coming from
Well, I have an idea on how I will make that
But do you use render target for every single portal? @oblique cairn
Or just one and deciding where and when to use it through some clever algorithm
@glass fossil In the published version, I have just one render target, and design levels so only 1 portal can be visible by a player at once - but locally I have a render target for each portal
In the published version, with a flying camera you sure could get to a position where you are able to see two portals at once - in this case they would both render, but one would overwrite the other
Oh ok
the algorthim to decide which to be active is not so clever - it's the snippet I pasted above: rendering_enabled = dot( norm(camera.pos-portal.pos), portal.fwd ) > 0
in my case the connect cubes limited the portals, so I knew precisely how many render targets were needed
felt like a sane / safe solution
Sounds good!
Starting 3rd day on UE4 Megajam 2018 entry playthru streaming, 129 entries still to go, Hop in to see what people made ^^ https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
Oh i was already thinking where you gone not streaming
Resuming stream after supper break, 101 entries to go https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
I made a game for epic jam what do you think? ๐

hey @near cairn , did you catch your game being played on shadowrivers stream?
Just updated the spreadsheet for his last 4 vods: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OuYRBRw8XyNRzRxZdxCat8ApogzklCK8Nw4SmpufJvg/edit#gid=1662984396
and I do see temporary space in there ๐
im working on an indirect sequel to door maze ๐
that has nothing to do with doors or mazes because why not
window corridor
Mention me when shadowriver stream
Wrote a postmortem for Anomaly ๐ https://www.partlyatomic.com/2018/11/19/anomaly-postmortem/
@copper carbon
i be little late today with stream, i got things to do first
Solid read @minor hemlock thanks for putting that together
Starting 4th day of UE4 MegaJam playthru marathon stream, 76 entries still waiting to be played, hop in to see those ^^ https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
๐
@minor hemlock - Thanks for sharing your experience! Nice little write-up
no problem, it was just personal notes. that grew. and grew. and grew.
@minor hemlock Great breakdown and cheers for the shoutout!
@trail trellis I have to ask... If you had another day or two what would you add/fix in your game?
If I didn't know better I'd say it's 100% finished
That's a good question! Probably refine the throw mechanic, fix the glitchy physics pickups and maybe work on a 'boss' level as a sort of finale.
Because co-working with a ticking timebomb isn't stressful enough? ๐ฌ
Haha. Well I was never really happy with the ending anyhow so a chaos level which is characteristically different to the other 3 or 4 would make sense I think.
I don't want to spoil the actual ending but it's basically a post it note and is appropriately lame.
Resuming UE4 MEgaJam Playthru Marathon after supper break, hop in, only 53 entries left ;] https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
@gaunt copper thanks for the info and playing the game โค
@tulip viper what is your entry?
@glass fossil Hamsters ๐
https://twitter.com/Riuthamus/status/1063142160256520194 @glass fossil
Finally, we are done with this. Hope you all enjoy it and let us know what you think! https://t.co/6j3aqLosSm #UE4Jam #gamedev #gameart #screenshotsaturday #twitchgame #twitch #streamelements @UnrealEngine
@tulip viper Whoever did the color and composition for that image there did a very good job
However there is a big contrast issue with the title and the space ship on the right end of it
Lol did it in 5 min for submission, 100% agree, but time ruled out hehe
@gaunt copper thanks for playing our game! ๐
We were going for more of a story approach where itโs like the player would slowly realize that theyโre living in a simulation made by us, but the time limit was a pretty big constraint so we didnโt end up getting to test it to see how people would follow
I've also made a game for the mega jam 2018
REACHED LEVEL 12 :D Made for MEGAJAM 2018 - UNREAL ENGINE Download game: https://xixgames.itch.io/magic-unreality
@glass fossil which one is oyurs?
@gaunt copper realistically you don't want to send much higher than 720p60 to twitch unless you're partnered
nods nobody using 4k
Tried setting near-clip to 0 ๐
seems OK at any value >0, (such as 0.0001) but I think there is a hardcoded minimum of 0.1 or something
@minor hemlock i can lower it 1080p, no way i gonna go down to 720 with my 4k screen
It's mainly to do with upload limits imposed by Twitch, if you attempt 4k or even 1080p60 there may be excessive stuttering on the viewers end
Limits are set on bitrate so if anything there will be more blur and with impurity in motion
i will lower it to 1080p because oyu will stop to see small things on screen other wise :p
it looks fine on recordings
the thing to remember is
people have to pull that down, and to do that they need the internet connection to see that/process it.
Also, if you are pushing 4k to twitch, you need a SUPER solid upload or it wont be as clear as you would imagine
its a good theory, but mostly only used for playback stuff or tournaments like LoL and Dota2
i got 100mbit upload
if you got the stuff to do it, go for it!
it not a problem for me
just understand that most people cant view it
also, until you get affiliated, they cant switch off of SOURCE mode
oh yeah, you don't get transcoding servers as a non-partner either
so they are FORCED to watch in 4k
this means... even if they want to reduce the size, they cant
eh... i dont know enough about it, to go that much into it
i can tell you, watching your stream the other day I was getting loads of dropping/flopping
thats magic of video compression
im on a 1.8MB connection
but less data oyu send the more fuzzy the quality becomes
and i tried to switch off of source and couldnt
so I had to stop watching
other streamers, i can watch at 720 or 420 and have no issues
because of my shit internet (rural US) I can only watch lower end streams
๐ฆ
Also, if I remember correctly twitch caps anything past 4,000 on bitrate
could have been a while, but I thought that was the case
i know OBS suggests 2.3K
i use to stream at 3K
anything more and my internet would go to a crawl ๐
I watch several text heavy programming streams at 720p, it's not all that bad :p
thats partly why I cant stream anymore ๐ฆ
my shilzy interwebs
@gaunt copper you do you, whatever works, just trying to give out some friendly info
not like im mad lol
Starting final 5th day of UE4 MegaJam playthru marathon, 34 entries left and we gonna finish them all today... hopefully ^^' https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
5 days already! Anyone know when official judge results will be out?
I think last time it was scheduled for 2 weeks out until they had to delay for hurricane
well, I shan't hold my breath ๐
its not hurricane season anymore though
Had a look around at some other jams, none of the ones starting soon that I saw looked mega tempting
I should look more, good fun to make a game in a small time period, particularly with the possibility of a prize along with the fame and glory ๐
@hidden flicker It's not forest fire season anymore either, but...
Resuming UE4 MegaJam 2018 playthru marathon stream after supper break, only 15 entries to go ^^ https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
Ok explored 210 entries, actully played 188 skipped 22 for various reasons, thank you everyone for watching ^^ heres my final rating list https://pastebin.com/5qGwVvWP
also skipped that troll unity entry and apex which is entry from summer
which makes 212
also there 1 missing game that i could not find
Which ones of all chances would you put on a top 3?
@gaunt copper Thanks so much!
@glass fossil Department Of Truth Correction definitely high chance imo most solid entry, maybe also Hamsters Are Often Inaccurate, rest is not sure ;p Amanda and Tim suprice me every jam by picking entries that i didn't expected at all, so really dont take my chance selection too seriuesly.
you doors are high on my top list
I thought those two have pretty high chances as well
would be curious to know picks for special categories, but I guess you didn't play any Android or VR entries, hehe
Both of those games felt polished, had a nice graphical style, and seemed to play well (I'll dl and give them a go myself)
Department of Truth Correction was a full team, IIRC?
I think it's by an actual studio
(small indie, that is)
if it's solo, it's probably nailed that category, heh
am I missing someting on department of truth correction? It seemed to have a very coherent style and seemed polished and all, but the game is just dumping stuff on my desk and then I explode, right?
I only saw victor play it, and he didnt spend long ๐
that was when he was SUPER tired and annoyed with anything that moved lmao
I have this high up on my list: https://toone.itch.io/fragments
looks amazing, has some odd design decisions, but was still fun to play through
atomic played it for a while - it adds more and more elements as you go through the levels
so you get a shredder, a rubber stamp for approvals, more complex filtering rules etc
Fragments looks nice, hadn't seen that one yet
looks like the departament of truth correction is a teeam of more than one, made by "Nocturnal Arts"
so i might have a pretty high chance of getting the one man army special category
Are the Game Jam results next week, Thursday stream?
Oh good, in which case if I finish my other projects I can do one of those play all the games streams ๐
ah jeez you are super right, I haven't had my morning coffee yet
what was your game @waxen trout ?
A Robot's Journey
Sorry on mobile the link is a bit hard to find atm but I'll try on desktop in a bit ๐
When will we be able to update our games?
after results are announced
And when are they announced?
see above ๐ somewhere between 2 weeks and 1 month or possibly a little longer
Oh
So I have a lot of time to get an update ready to upload when the game is already dead
๐
I think I had barely any downloads (sadface), but yeah, can't update it until the jam lock is released, which is usually after results, which in turn tends to take a while
you can always use gamejolt
our gamejam games tend to do better on gamejolt than on itch
Yeah I think last time it took like a month and a half to get the result out iirc
Oof
indieDB as well
tbf there were a lot of industry conferences and events going on, which is why it kept getting delayed.
@robust basalt Not familar with gamejolt, will have a quick look now
@dusky vessel I also heard something about hurricanes
@gaunt copper i watched you playing my game, man why dont you use the second button of the mouse to fly??
you can't blame the players for not playing your game correctly. If you can't find a way to teach the player to play your game correctly, it is 100% your fault.
yep
almost the entirety of my jam game was tutorial leading up to just one actual puzzle
and even then players still missed stuff I'd hoped was obvious
that's where playtesting comes in, but hard to do in gamejam scope
that's why I love the epic jam playthroughs, you get feedback pretty quick and can fix most of those issues with it
thats why i have only WASD, Mouse & Escape buttons
these all are the default buttons for every game
and the game itself is very simple and straight forward
did you give the player a challenge that they can only beat when mastering a certain control?
that is usually the best way of doing it, when the player simply can't beat a certain thing and then go: "what am I missing"
and then they press the right button and boom, they learned it
pretty sure you didn't do any of that, so there will be always a certain percentage of people that miss your important buttons if you don't do that
working on the megajam submission! come check it out https://www.twitch.tv/riuthamus
@cerulean wren which entry? :p
I only had 11 downloads full stop, so, eh
I don't even have 60 views, lol
my barely most successful is 356
dam so close to 365
can you download my have 9 times pls?
obviously the cover image for mine wasn't enough to draw people in xD
https://img.itch.zone/aW1hZ2UvMzMwMTY5LzE2MzY1NzkucG5n/original/U2MdKv.png
aye
keep working on it with the feedback you got from playtesters/streamers
our jam games usually only take off with post jam fixes

Looking for Teammates for Ludum Dare 43, its on the 30th for 72 Hours. Have some Cool ideas, if anyone wants to join. Looking for a Writer, GUI Designer.
a writer?
yes
anyone else working on their games post-jam?
I'll be getting back to mine soon enough
ya
we have plans to expand ours too
generally speaking if you don't know what to add, don't add anything
you gain little from adding things for the sake of it
I was actually hoping to get it ported to Oculus Go during the jam, but I barely had enough time to actually finish the game.
But, I also took time to sustain myself and keep myself sane. So, it's mostly me.
\o/
How does one manage to stay sane during a game jam? I don't even really want to think about the number of hours I put into my game...
that's why I like epic's jams... 5/7 days is good for sanity and progress
not sure I could ever do an actual weekend jam
It is probably because I'm a solo dev and trying to do everything
nah, once you have a team the goalposts just get set further out ๐
True
For me right now least time I can think of idea and make a game is 5/6 days
While being sane
I'm pretty good at finishing the bare bones quickly, but I take forever on polish
But idk about 3 days
My door maze game for this epic megajam was my most polished game lol, so polishing isn't a problem for me xd
I made sure to sleep at least 6 hours a day. The last couple days were cheat days.
I went for at least 1 walk.
Made sure to take regular breaks.
At least play 1 video game a day.
(and maybe turn off your discord game indicator if you're on a team ๐ ๐ :P)
Heh, perhaps. ๐
I turned the audio indicator off a long time ago.
I also did my best to plan everything ahead (the walk helped).
So, I kinda knew if I was in over my head or designing out of scope most of the time.
In the end, I cut out a lot of things in the last few days to make sure I actually finish.
But, all the stuff I ended up cutting was tagged as "icing" as opposed to the "cake" (the core game loop).
So, yeah. Long-winded explanation as to how I stayed sane.
๐๐ผ ๐ ๐ค๐ผ
Here's a video "flythrough" of my indie game jam project created in 3 weeks.
There are 5 mini bosses which once killed unlock a teleport to the final boss, 2 classes (healer / dps) with 11 choosable skills each , story and Dialogue throughout AND it is multiplayer for up to 4 players ๐

a 3 week jam? ๐ฎ
well its a month long i just missed the first week lol
and btw thats not even near max details ๐ฎ it looks so pretty maxed out but alas my RX 460 2gb can't handle that lol
still, pretty badass for 3 weeks ๐

PartlyAtomicToday at 2:07 PM (and maybe turn off your discord game indicator if you're on a team :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :P)
lmao
@hidden flicker nah, do what my coder does, change the name of the games you play in steam to coder programs ๐
LMAO
damn thats a good 1
alright guys im going to work on the UI elements, playing civilization .. okay we'll see this guy in 2 days
๐
https://youtu.be/av6tAaGMo80 thoughts on this as an intro video? trying to finish this up and want some other eyes to make sure its good!
Not bad. A few things:
- I would let the people at the start walk normal and then start freaking out. Kinda weird to see them running before the "enemy" comes.
- The Intro of the bad guy is nice, however the effect on removing the intro seems weird to me.
- In the Info Screen, the top right "One Eye" secion shouldn't go out of bounce with the actual screen.
- Subtitles!
@tulip viper
All obviously my own opinion. :P
nods thanks for the info! โค
so i got my project submitted to the indie game making contest 2018 with 14 hrs to spare Phew time to relax haha , heres a link to the submission page (hope this is allowed? otherwise admin delete)

now i wonder what "Baldur's Scrolls Valkyria" is gonna look like ๐
https://youtu.be/pyr7v7jMMIc finally finished with some changes, got a bit more to go though. sighs UE4 is fun to do with cinematics
cool
there was an issue with the .zip file i uploaded for the game jam ๐ฎ but i reuploaded and it works now Phew
Hey guys - did a few updates to Unscher: http://chozabu.net/autopush/Unscher.zip
-better portals
-several small bugfixes
-Third person (press C)
-invert camera (press I)
-other things too (I think)
anyone participating in LD?
nah
is there any news on when game jam judging will be?
I would want to do LD but I feel like 3 days would force me to go too hard and I'm not sure I've got that in me this weekend
there is also 2 day compo ๐
Ahh, now I see the difference between LD compo and jam. Jam does not require open source, and can use existing assets
Just found this LD JAM 43 submission
It even prevents you from leaving the page. (make sure the sound is enabled)
nice concept
Will we see a dedicated Game Jam section on the new Epic Store? ๐
I wouldn't expect it, Itch already does that quite well - suspect they will want games with some more polish on the store (really no idea though)
Yay! We are getting results tomorrow!
200 submissions, that's 1000 people worst case, that's still a good 0,1% chance to win a UE4 chair... good luck everyone! ๐
results tomorrow? is that official?
it says so on epic launcher
haha
I mean... I wouldn't put it past them to use that as a quick screener ๐
212 entries x just 5 minutes each = 18 hours or so
to get through all that in two weeks, well xD
it's like 3 full working days, haha
and that's at only 5 minutes each
my game is about 15-25 mins
I think my game took people about 25-40 minutes to complete xD
not sure we have a good number on how long it takes someone fresh to complete our game
but thankfully within 1 or 2 levels you get the gist of it ๐ (minus the epic boss battle)
in my case you really need to play through to the actual puzzle room to 'get' the game
epic boss battle ๐
I don't think you'd get there in 5 minutes
not without knowing what you were doing!
I think that tutorial section leading up to it took people something like 10-15 minutes alone
slow puzzle games, innit
hahaha
it be like that sometimes
I dunno, Shadowriver got through it without help and he was pretty terrible at the puzzle stuff
I do think it was about 40 minutes though
you should have at least one* ludum dare /compo under your belt, imo
spring jam ๐
idk where is spring and autumn
i always mistake them for eachother
what goes after winter?
compo is 24 hours solo, no sourced assets
but actually it was last week ๐ฆ
next one is in april
48 hours*
if I were to make a compo game in unreal... the line between "entirely from scratch" and "batteries included" is way too blurry
that will be the least amount of time for me to make a game, all my other were 5+ days
not sure why I wrote 24, I meant two days ๐
oh
well that is, a little, better
so will anyone please tell me whats after winter???
spring?
oh ok
thanks
english isnt my primary language and i dont know the times of year in english that well
anyone here will participate in the next weekly gamejam?
for some reason I think winter ends when the year ends. then january to march are no-mans-season
depends on your location though
I'm unsure if I'll do the winter ue4jam if there is one, but definitely at least one next year
i will try to participate in every ue4 jam
cuz its the only one im familiar with
and the only one i have done
๐ it's nice having a jam community centered around a single tool when you go for help
it has it's charm, but ludum dare has a lot more people competing and the site adds a nice social feel to it, so does the judging
its nice sharing progress
ue4jam without the playthrough streams is kinda lacking in that department
anyone mind if I share an awesome little ludum dare puzzler game I found?
if you like sokoban you owe it to yourself to get to level 7
yup, found a puzzle dev community thanks to the last UE stream
ya, it's pretty cool
needs a better first level though, kinda failed to communicate the mechanics at first, all the levels after the first are waay easier
level 1 was ๐ฌ level 7 is where I ๐ฎ and level 10 is ๐
Results day!
Excited!
1 HOUR
Is there a stream we should watch, or is it just getting posted on the jam page?
Maybe I should re-read the jam page.
Nm. Didn't see anything.

\o/ finalists: sowon, liebrary, the doctor
I asked on Twitch but didn't get an answer, who won the special categories?
told you they always suprice :p
but i predicted 2 of them ^^
liebary was total suprice atleats for me
i guess they looked on entries that are more direct to theme more :>
I mean that's kind a fair - games that fit the theme should be the winners
Congratulations for all winners from gameDNA! ๐
@maiden loom tavern.... forgot the others ๐
oh and the controlling-two-characters puzzly one
next time i should not bend the theme so hard
but i dont think it band the theme imo :>
it same as sowon where you got completely something different in each door
no mention of fragments though
oh yea now that i think about it with those ocnditions, im even more suppriced that fragment didnt get to top 3 xd
No mentions of two I had solidly expected as finalists either :p
which one was Fragment again?
aha
one with the turkey
I was looking at this one:
https://itch.io/jam/2018-epic-megajam/rate/330925
and thinking, eh?
though this one looks kinda neat in a super minimalist way
yeah, the Turkey one was kinda neat
Part 10 -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
oh yeah, I also played the 3d fragments, it was soooo smooth (and glitchphobia pls :D)
But in terms of art sowan is definitly better
maybe this is what decided vs fragments
missed the stream due to work. any results posted?
they streamed, don't think they posted it in textform anywhere yet though
k, thanks. will check back later on the jam site or something
@proper hull what was your project?
vr game called RF3
experimented with motion-based weapon morphing and world aligned movie players
the bar one won vr category, but watch the stream as there was free raffles
they unlocked the games and we uploaded an update for our game today
shameless plug
foes it have more levels?
more and different
pretty much all levels tweaked and bugs fixed
and general polish
@gaunt copper thanks, will check the stream when they post it
ok ;p maybe when my causin come here i will show him and let him play, he got guine pigs and always saying he wants to make game with them xd
๐
it already there twich automaticly records all streams
@proper hull
fantastic!
they updated title after steam started so it got wrong title
Well, it was all fun. See you folks in the next one!

@rigid fog there you go
whoops
didn't mean to tag tim slager lol
@dusk rampart no biggie. Thanks a lot.
Well, I feel that Glitchphobia was sooooo omitted, its really strange because this game had biggest response in the social media, multiple videos with letsplay on youtube and a lot of people that are asking for more. In this case reality is inacurate for me ๐
@dusk rampart Thank you for doing God's work
Glitchphobia missed something, it felt more like FX demo, like MetaBubbles we did in last jam
There was a lot better entries imo
And no mention of Anomaly... funny since I really liked the game, and not just as 1 of the devs, but thought platforming and finding hidden objects to be a lot fun... anyways, it was a lot of fun to work on as @minor hemlock and I did the programming and another person did the level design and placed the anomalies, so it was a challenge for us as the devs to find the anomalous objects.. nice way to make a game, with the devs being testers
Deciding on the 5th day to make a save system to saves all pogress. Instead of focusing on polishing definitely took its toll though, because if you dont finish the game you dont realize how we played into the theme
just watched the awards, congrats to all involved, hopefully I get the time to participate next yr
More mulling over my time spent in the jam:
-Should have spent a little longer thinking about original concept. Resulting idea was OK, but some post-jam thoughts and changes could have happened sooner
-Didn't need to make a trailer during the jam (particularly a long, not very good one) - just a tiny clip or two would have been fine. A decent trailer can come later.
-Graphics could be more refined, either with my own work or existing assets
-Could have spent less time on discord chatting and testing out other peoples games. Fun, but perhaps better to work with a team, being more fun and productive!
-Generally could have worked harder!
Goal next time is 1st place ๐
@oblique cairn unscher got a picture on the blog entry ๐
@minor hemlock did it? Nice - Thought I'd gone un-noticed
Still, will be studying like a monk and practicing like the karate kid for next jam
(some nearby monks at Buckfast abbey brew wine with caffeine in it... ๐ )
been doing a few more bits on Unscher, tempted to put it on steam for free or a minimal price
but mostly been working on the portals...
Where can i find this blog?

Oh found it
@oblique cairn do it! You could even make the first 3 levels free... and the rest dlc?
@unrealbot give me a game jam idea
@hybrid dust You gotta DM the bot and say !gameidea or something like that iirc
@dusky vessel Thanks, I'll do that.
Hey everyone. My team and I are working on a 3d turn based strategy game in UE4 for the Virtus Winter Gam Jam (ends 4th Jan - theme is Armageddon). We have all the roles filled except for 2d art / UI design, so if anyone has a bit of experience in this field and would like to join please drop me a message.
congratz @south osprey
Thank you so much @candid lichen !!!
Thanks @glacial shore ๐ we have the role filled for UI designer now, so not in that department. The project would still benefit from some good 2d art, a shader artist and/or FX artist, so if you have those skills then yes. But I can't promise loads of work as the scope for the project is fairly small.
I'm trying out my first jam today, wish me luck.
G'luck!
Good luck!

Hey guys I wanted to ask if it's ok to take pre made assets for global game jam
It's kind of my first Global game jam๐
I don't think there are any rules regarding pre-made assets - GGJ is more of a fun/learning jam with no prizes. If anything - I'd say just credit things you did not make yourself
@unkempt finch thanks ๐
next epic jam when

damn, if you'd have done it the weekend after I'd have actually had all the time I wanted and access to my normal workstation ๐ข
On V-day huh
Like, no one thought about shifting it up or down a week?
Singles club up in there
"Friends And Foes" for the best split screen game
were there any split screen games last jam? ๐
yeah, it's a poor choice of date, it must be said
One weekend earlier is still awfully close to GGJ
Further out and we don't really have time to judge with the leadup to GDC
can't be the week before anyway because it's Lunar New Year plus all those assorted festivals
week after would have felt better though
Agreed - it's not ideal.
It could end up with an interesting theme
split screen could be fun
I'm definitely going for under 100mb.
under 100mb is the best category, honestly, it's always interesting to try and push as much as possible
๐ญ
global game jam doesnt have anything near me... dont really want to drive 40 minutes to orlando (just saw that 1 can host a jam themselves as long as you can get a +1 to attend)
but luckily epic has the winter jam
im going solo this time, good luck guys
why is everyone worried about valentines anyways.. dont you all just have cats and stuff
@fallow lion go go go
owo gamejam page
<100mb ez, split screen, maybe, depending on a theme
wait
hold up
is it only split screen?
or can it be on 1 full screen but with multiple players?
^since I thought about this question too, I think this is a good question to ask
@twilit orestaff
why did it correct to that xd
sory for ping
oh, his tag is epic
it says "split screen", so I would assume that category is for split screen
we need answers from the overseers staff!
Throwback Thur... Monday! @pine fulcrum's reaction upon completing my very first game jam entry ever
Has anyone tried getting a Houdini license?
https://twitter.com/immiddlle/status/1089993554989121542?s=20 our submitted GGJ game
Our game Couch Brawlers all made in 48h for the #GGJ19 Curitiba, using @UnrealEngine feel free to play link: https://t.co/DUyRT39A5y and give some feedback! #gamedev #ue4 https://t.co/8CZxjLL2X0
@vapid thistle just tried it out, seemed to go fine (free licence)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=242kNQOSViY this is our game made in the jam aswell ๐ (play with 2 controlers, we didnt had time to put how to play properly) have fun (the link : https://globalgamejam.org/2019/games/bound-love)
so little people joined at this time? hmmmm
well that could do with that this isnt a megajam
it's on Valentines day
Yeah, it falling on Valentines day didn't do it and favors.
As long as there are more than forty entries
I think people will sign up closer to the date as well, still 2 weeks out and things like GGJ just happened, focus is probably elsewhere
Actually, less people = less competition
As long as there are forty or more submissions
is 40 the lower bound in the rules or?
Yeah, it was for the summer jam, and I'm doubting that they are going to change the rules.
yeah, they tend to stay the same
59 have joined so far ๐
Pretty stoked for the Winter #ue4jam. First one I've had time to participate in for a while. ๐
Right here: https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam
You can look for one that is already formed or you can start your own.
Lol I can't even start a team for my real game. I'll just try to join one.
Thanks for the link
No problem. ๐
@subtle plaza I sent you a dm. I'd start a team if you want.
Hello there, I've seen some people are sharing their global game jam projects, so here is what we made (in ue4 ofc) It was really fun to play with procedural meshes in order to slice the food! haha https://vmonty.itch.io/bring-home-to-me
@queen heart Looks great
I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but when I try entering the promo code for Soundly it says Promo code expired, and ideas as to why this is?
They have more DXRacer chairs!!!
@vapid thistle I can't confirm this but it's possible the promo code will only work once the jam starts.
Maybe, that is it, but if I'm remembering correctly I could get it before previous jams had started. Hopefully thought you are right.
@tranquil matrix Thank you! ๐
@queen heart interesting! I'm slicing food in my own game, did you ever run into any issues where thin slices gave invisible end caps?
Hey guys if there's anyone who wants to make a VR game for the next jam then shoot me a message! I'm a programmer and I'm looking for people with pretty much any role
just leave this here: for those wanting to make a splitscreen game in ue4 with emissives and post processing bloom you will have a tough time(it wont work) using a launcher version of the engine, you need to build the engine from source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llg_7JpI1Uo ... ive had this issue since 2016 and it hasnt been changed in any engine version
Please leave a like or comment to show appreciation, it is motivating. This really needs to be enabled by default. I saw no easy tutorials on this topic so I...
so is splitscreen there just splitscreen or just multiplayer on one screen? because i dont want to make a splitscreen game... and i think non splitscreen local mp is superior better
@glass fossil it says explicitly splitscreen, so I assume it is indeed that. Ask in the forum thread or another direct contact with staff, if you want more clarification than others have answered here already
it would say "best multiplayer" or "best local multiplayer" if that was the intention
@minor hemlock I hadn't that issue :S does it happen only when the slice is too thin?
@queen heart ๐ข yeah, if you hold the mesh in place and slice twice that seems to reproduce it pretty often
I had problems with the setup of procedural mesh and also with the event to generate those (i used OnBeginOverlap which end up too hard to control the execution). But this video from epic clarify the proper setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zJM1gKoU14

@glass fossil @zenith gust I rushed the itch.io page, it was indeed supposed to be "local shared screen multiplayer". Will update soon!
O wow
Thats big
Local multiplayer makes a lot more possibilities than splitsceen
Nice... i had a dream i made this awesome gamejam game, and then i was done and i asked wait, what was the theme about.... so it was like a sneaky nightmare kinda
The theme is going to be Love Is in the Air
they usually avoid holiday themes
or are at least vague enough that it can go either way
"What's in the Box?" was a good one ? ๐
when was it?
i wouldve loved to make a game about it
but i guess i missed it
sed
that was Winter 2015 or so, I think
our game wasn't great, but it was a very early VR game so it got a surprising amount of plays when it got featured on whatever download site Oculus used to have
ok so im doing a gamejam right now
and i think i have the idea
time to get building
I've updated itch.io page as well as the forum post to better detail the Friends And Foes category.
Excited to play all of your submissions
aww, I was hoping to do a singleplayer split screen game if I got the time, and now it doesn't quality ๐ข

$4.99
ah neat
totally not the kind of thing I was aiming for, but neat nevertheless
I wanted to do something with dynamically creating split-screens and having some kind of weird interplay between them
(exactly what depending on theme and what can be done in two days, hehe)
might still do something like that anyway
add in a bit of that dynamic split screen ala Lego games and you've got a masterpiece mind F*
man, there is so little info out there about split screen
it's almost impressive
I'd have thought way more people would have been playing with this, haha
for sure, but a great time for everyone to get off their GetPlayerController(0) addictions ๐
shhhh
I made my fork tonight anyway
10% chance I'll do something with it, the split screen implementation is a bit naff (and no BP exposure..)
splitscreen is fine in ue4... theres also that new split screen mode you can split like tetris games 4 ways vertical...
you can also always make a c++ actor that enables splitscreen and just use it as a blueprint
void ASplitScreenController::OnToggleSplitScreen(AActor* Context, bool bStatus)
{
if (Context)
{
Context->GetWorld()->GetGameViewport()->SetDisableSplitscreenOverride(bStatus);
}
}
@maiden loom just in case you did wanna do something, just make a function like that , and you can call it from as long as you define the header file blueprint callable like this UFUNCTION(BlueprintCallable, Category = "splitscreen") static void OnToggleSplitScreen (AActor* Context, bool bStatus);
Hey guys! If thereโs any programmers / 3D modelers looking for a team for the upcoming jam and want to make a VR game, shoot me a dm!
@maiden loom Pretty sure Wes goes over how to do it all in blueprints here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOc9fV6Sap4
Announce Post: https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?127674 In this session, Sr. Technical Writer Wes Bunn takes a look at a few different local mul...
Ah the "local multiplayer" options are only .ini settings by default afaik
@tranquil matrix - I went through the source code - pretty much nothing is exposed to blueprints, all you can do is flip an enum in a config file (and a 1.5 hour video tutorial is a bit of a waste of time to find that, IMHO)
yup
the C++ implementation isn't great - I want to remove the enum entirely
expose the actual split screen structs and make hooks for the relevant functions
that way you can actually do things like dynamically split
Yeah that'd be great
OnCreatePlayer should split windows further
Or option to, anyway
I'd rather just have manual control in a separate node
if you want to call it after OnCreatePlayer finishes, then that makes perfect sense
๐ฎ
Hello all, quick question: can I join the jam after the jam kickoff? I just want to know the theme and full rule before launching myself into this! :)
@arctic stratus Yes, the only thing that ultimately matters is that you submit before the final deadline
Gotcha, thanks!
you can just join a jam before it and leave if you hate the theme tho
thats what i do, i use itch io jam joining as bookmarking them and seeing when they start
Doing some prepwork to get a pipeline for small size, and I remember asking this many jams ago but cant recall getting a clear answer, can we assume that we can exclude the dependency installers on PC, given that they are so big? Also, I'm guessing the size limit is still counted when uncompressed?
Awesome cats looking for 3D artist for winter jam ;3 send me PM if you interested
@arctic stratus i seen entires that was mentioning it ben work only in part of jam time
Forming a team for UE4 Winter Jam, if anybody is interested.
Looking for people with either proffessional experience or some really good examples https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam/teams/3146
We still looking for 3D artist, if you interested PM ^^
Still looking for artists, designers, and coders. PM me if you are interested
To get perforce access for the jam, do all members of the team need to create an assembla account?
the jam site say max number of team is 5, we already max on 4, how to add one more member, or to change max member on the team page ._. ?
If anyone's looking for a sound designer or composer for the jam - let me know - open to all kinds of projects ๐ ๐ช ๐ต ๐
Would love a UI developer for the upcoming jame ๐
Today jam starts hype
But at 9pm for me lol
But I have realized that it's actually a good thing, because I have the rest of the evening to think, I can then think when going to sleep, think while in school, and then work. And when have to finish I can work until 9pm and there will be no time wasted!
While submitting for the Game jam, should we include prerequisites or disable them?
looking for a ui designer preferably a 2d artist too
what is prerequisites
A bunch of system files everyone needs to have installed to run UE4 games. You should generally always leave them included.
don't think so, sounds a bit mobiley
@maiden loom oof, they're 40mb of the 100mb budget for the small game category ๐ฎ
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can get me project under 100mb. I've made a completely blank project, and followed all of epic's advice on how to reduce package size, but I'm still ending up with a 125mb project. The engine file is taking up 101mb of that. Any idea as to what I'm doing wrong?
Would be great to confirm if it's actually 100mb uncompressed or 100mb zipped
'cause that really changes how to approach it
uncompressed - i don't think your ability to locate decent zipping tools is part of the category :p
well the winner for the 2018 spring jam for that category was 88 mb zipped, 255 mb unzipped
that's the only reason I'm asking, I too thought it was uncompressed
@vapid thistle what engine file is 101mb for you?
I can get a very stripped down win32 project down to 43-45mb, with a lot of blacklisting and features/plugins turned off
but that's without prereqs, can test now how it ends up with them in
zipped seems very unfair :/
yeah I agree
I can compress a 1GB project down if we're going to start letting people do that kind of thing ๐
I think it should be uncompressed, just looking for a clarification, posted in the jam thread but I think that was missed
In my build file. I was just doing a win64 build, with all the tips that epic gives for a small build.
@safe island @copper carbon Any chance of getting that rule clarified?
68mb is my result with a win32 build with prerequisites, but that's with almost all engine stuff blacklisted, no slate/umg, and built against engine source to exclude those things from the engine base binary too
@vapid thistle but 32bit definitely helps size, try that to start
I will try that. Thank you!
bp_sky_sphere in the default level takes up ~10-15mb just for that sky texture ๐
I was getting ~45mb w/o prereqs yesterday and didn't need to exclude editor content either
yeah, in my example I have the level cleared out, just 1 cube mesh with 1 custom material on, and then all the defaults possible blacklisted without crashing
big save is just watching out for those default textures getting pulled in it seems
(and Cook Only Maps)
my executable alone is 31 mb even trimmed, and then 9.15mb from third party libs, and a basic empty level with 1 mesh/mat adds up to the remaining 3-4 mb
could build without physX to save another 7 mb I guess, but then no physics
good chance to have fun with low poly models and procgen materials ๐
yeah for sure, though I am out all of saturday and some sunday, so might be very tight time-wise
I'm not participating this jam ๐ฆ but I'll probably try and stream some requested games near the end
really interested in seeing what comes out of that category
I'm not sure either, but if the theme is compelling enough I'll try to get something together on the evenings
@zenith gust You can compress the packaged binary with a setting in packaging, there's no requirement to "uncompress" before you execute it. Compressing the binary that way is ok, but having a zipped version that's below 100mb, and an unzipped version thats more than 100mb, is not within the rules.
@tranquil matrix that's a good clarification, any chance you can pin it?
under 100 category is back?
