I've only really used blender... so can't compare
at work I have a tool that makes it 50 times better but I dont have it on here and theres only 3 hours left -_-
Main thing that annoys me with blender+ue4 is they handle skeletal meshes differently (suspect it is due to FBX being a kinda suckey format though)
like all the bones are rotated 90degrees and upon first import into blender it adds an extra parent that must be removed before sending back to UE4

not even tried doing animation or other complex things, just making a basic mesh to fit on epic skeleton and weight painting it (which eventually worked OK)

well it packages but the portals I have that are suppose to create their own texture and scene captures dont work. They work in the editor but not in a package
And at this point I've told my team that we wont have it done

I'm still new to UE4 so I thought that a "constructor" ran whenever the object was CONSTRUCTED in game and out

if you place items with constructors in the persistent level, then I'm 99% sure constructor is only called in editor and not at runtime

I didn't actuall fix it, figured I only have 1 portal visible at a time, so they all share data
with this mess here to check which is visible (along with some careful level design)

@cerulean geode AFAIK that is all you need to do (assuming you replaced previous zip) - but make sure you have both put your game on itch AND submitted it from main jam page

Had build issues with VS17 all morning finally got it working, uploaded, wrote my submission and then because when i saved my changes to the edit to my page where I had been uploading, it set it back to draft. When I submitted it selected an older project instead automatically.

so right now it only has the mechanics we wanted to use, and you have to manually activate them with k, and you get an error whenever you boot it

@dry jetty I have a bunch of portals that for some reason took me forever to figure out how to disable them with rendering, when I tested in the fps template it worked flawlessly, but then when making my own room in a fresh level they would be rendering through the walls, even though I couldnt see it. I had to set the LOD of the plane mesh used for the portal to disappear at around 1000 units

I think I benefited from going solo for my first jam in the summer, gave me an idea of what parts I would contribute best to a team
I feel like it was almost a miracle that everything came together at the end there for me. I was close to not having enough gameplay and not being able to submit. ๐ฌ

reading migrating, my crashed perforce server comes to mind. We were pretty late on the assembla thing, so I hosted a server on my local machine.
Smart me also ran a very unstable overclock and I bluescreened during the jam, completely fucking the repo....

@minor hemlock sort of, all the key mechanics are working but we don't have any game play so what we uploaded was a single-level that you walk around in and then you can force activate the mechanics by pressing a button on the keyboard. Other than that yes everything else works, I learned that a constructor is only for the editor and not for runtime

Damn. Well I opted to stay away from the new release for exactly that reason. 4.20 has been super good to me. ๐
but I was getting crashes when moving items in my menu level, which hand nothing fancy/weird in it at all
4.20 has been great to me until this jam!

The game runs for me, although that menu is so confusing! I also see the content in the sub folders which is basically a copy of your project files fyi.
vulkan is not supposed to create these errors on normal system XD

@zinc relic for another game I use UAT directly, I've written a script that will package and upload to steam... but I must admit there are sure bits I don't fully understand
think I didn't use .PAK there either so steams differential uploader can compare the data better and send less info up my slow internet line
@oblique cairn Yea it's a bit bright that's all. Also, it's nice of you to want to be transparent, but the fact you have paid marketplace assets in there is not ideal for their authors. Redistributing outside of your team is against the marketplace license I believe.

paks are the encrypted form of the base encryptions
its not only lighter on data, but its also better protected.
every encryption ofc can be broke
and what you did in your game is very easy to break
Yea the .pak is not fool-proof but it's better practice since it's not common knowledge or easy.

I think it is related to the project rather than the engine, either my BP, or spaceshader, or voxelplugin
@worldly night in some ways it is expensive - but many of the assets there are 500x less than what it would cost to pay someone to make it
yeah but some are so expensive yet so bad
Also, there is loads of free ue4 stuff - check the free section on the marketplace, also the "learn" tab of the launcher, and the templates+starters with the engine
@worldly night indeed, some assets don't look good to me. On the marketplace you can also now sort by price, and find the lowest cost good thing that matches your query
90% of the free stuff is paragon which is cool but i dont need it XD
oh tho they did give away like 8 million worth of assets
there is also the infinity blade stuff, and some new "monthly free" stuff, along with some other nice bits
There are also lots of places that hand out free models/textures that are easy to import into UE4

Still, we are lucky today. Not so long ago there was no online marketplace, or free stuff, you had to model things by basically moving around individual verticies and write your own engine ;)

@worldly night there are quite a few free(and cheap) trees if you don't want to make your own. Think there is a photorealistic pack from epic, soul cave has a tree or two, so does infinity blade grasslands

You can "paint" hundreds of meshes onto a landscape (or anything else) in seconds
the only things i have trouble with is: Making good textures, and drawing textures on stuff
with loads of configurable settings

Ah, you probably want to make a landscape material, so you can paint its layers with landscape paint tool, or to make a vertex-colour-blending material, so you can paint its layers with vertex colours (if not using a landscape)
there are a bunch of nice tutorials for both these options
you can also find free examples of both methods (particularly landscape painting)
grab the infinity blade grasslands pack, and have a look around its demo level - think it has some painted landscapes, you can try repainting it, and have a look at how its material works
@zinc relic @trail trellis Hmm, looking around some more I don't get the impression not using .pak should induce any errors, but I do see Tim Hobson (epic staff) backing up your comments on using it for protection
I really don't want to "protect" my own stuff, but even more I don't want to run afowl of the marketplace terms (or upset the creators who use it)
The patching method looks a little lame, and may result in lots of dupe data if a change assets willy-nilly? protection also sounds a little flimsy...
Still, I will leave .PAK turned on for future projects unless I get a direct OK from Epic saying it is not needed (which seems unlikely given Tim Hobsons reply)
What I'd really like is a way to encrypt only select files/folders (such as non-free marketplace content)

@worldly night IMO one of the better ways to lean this stuff is to pull apart the free assetpacks (like infinity blades grasslands, which has a painted landscape material)

Actually, I now have my second screen attached to my laptop, which is normally in linux - but use Synergy to share my desktops KB+mouse with it
works really well actually, as I have a 4k monitor for desktop, and 2 1080p screens stacked on the side
v. happy with this setup - still use the laptop KB/mouse directly if I am running a fullscreen game/app on desktop that locks input
(dunno why I am typing so much and taking photos these past couple of days, perhaps the game jam got me in a sociable mood)
Oh, I am also waiting for debugging symbols to install in 4.21, so cant use UE4 ๐
at least half the time laptop is closed and second screen is on standby to focus on desktop. Also with a 4k monitor tiling 2, 3 or 4 windows onto the screen is viable and works well, so extra screens are less needed

@glass fossil yeah, it's a great starter mic. get a stand for it though to isolate vibrations travelling from keyboard through desk, mine is attached to the bookcase next to the desk
and also to get it up nice and close to your mouth, otherwise you're gonna pick up a lot of noise

@copper carbon I'm noticing a pattern every time I try out one of these games. They launched my Steam VR even though they have nothing to do with VR
That's because SteamVR is enabled by default in projects
And since they are new
They don't know any better to disable when they open their new projects up to begin dev
Maybe it would be a good idea to have the Unreal Engine have steamvr disabled by default for everyone

You can go and manually have it disabled by default but you have to edit it with a text editor
I just find it weird that they would make it enabled by default

didn't, had time to populate the last section better, I had some different distortions planned, but in Game jams we always run against the clock, so the last section is bit simple, with a long wall jumping corridor.
