oh im stupid
Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
All my memories gather round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
I hear her voice, in the morning hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And driving down the road I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Take me home, down country roads
Take me home, down country roads
someone too hype for fallout
XD
Nah, this isn't because of fallout
This is because this describes life xd
Sad I don't live in west Virginia :(
sad i live in australia
Mateee im an actor get it right i bet you think the earth is a ball
wonders if you kids are old enough to have experienced time cube
"KIDS" ill have YOU know im a 80 year old man!!!!
im too lazy to read
This one pixel Gap is making me want to give up on this game jam
Add tiling earth texture to this cube
okay im going to play bo4
Oof
nah i wanted it
for the zombies
Do you guys think i should fix this
or say fuck it
You can go into 3d modeling program
And merge those vertices
That have the gap
@civic dock was this the effect you wanted?
My brain... everything is out of scope... downscope yo...time to downscope
For me its upscope time
If I get everything fixed and polished before deadline, then only will add something
Merge those vertices
i tried
we good
Idk
might be more appropriate channels for this kind of support π€
@worldly night that looks like a non-manifold mesh if you merge those verts
when enclosed meshes are connected by just an edge
that's non-manifold
and you won't be able to use UV Editor tools on the mesh
edge or a vert
eh i dont really care about that im having another problem id rather fix
in the #level-design check if you know how to fix that please
π
My brain... more coffee...
tomorrow's going to be a rough day (still need to work)
(today's)
@tulip viper spooopy
I'm working on particles instead of gameloop, because... logic fails me after 2am
indeed, i think it fails most
Iβm still on making level paths Xd
@tulip viper MAKE A DISCO HAMSTER PLEASE!
i want him to dance reeee
Yo i need some help
** I imported a room i made in maya but i cant get inside it in unreal engine, did maya give it auto collision or something?
idk what that means but alrighty
You can manually create and edit collision inside UE too
how :P?
WINDOW / COLLISIONS
there isnt "collisions" there?
thats also not there lol
Turn on simple collision from the thing in the red circle and then add collision boxes from the "collision" tab https://i.gyazo.com/12b2b89f6b8198060b9226a6051eeb65.png
you can add multiple ones and move and scale them as you wish
that is a waste of time (personally), just use the convex, its cheap and fast to make
wtf is that shit
thats LEVEL editor nerd
open the static mesh
π
yeah no shit
lol you say that, but yet you have this problem
just because i got confused doesn't mean i dont know what a collision is
just ignore me and go do your own thing i couldnt care less
oh lawdy, testy much
"""that is a waste of time (personally)"""
others can help me if you don't want to don't
lol
your using half broken words to describe your problem. help yourself and help me to help yu π
lol
i already told you this answer
CONVEX
set the setttings to SUPER HIGH
click apply
walk away (depending on how shizly your computer is)
once its done generating it... you good
how do i know?
see those green lines
made by UE4, auto creation script using HULL COUNT + HULL VERTS + HULL PREC at max settting
could get away with far less, maybe, but it works and doesnt cause you the need to hand make them or think about it π
and makes for nice collions for flying through, or hitting them π
So set all the Convex to max wait and it should be g?
yep
Appreciate the help you gave π have a good day
- Cya everyone gonna be working hard until the game jam ends wont be back till then, GoodLuck with all your games hope everyone wins!
Can't wait to get home
To finally work on the project
Today I have to get done with audio, first objective explanation message, dust particle, ending adjustments
And malevich square
Some more stuff
Damn @tulip viper how do you get ridges like that, erosion??
Adds some really nice texture to it
I'd imagine it's come right out of World Machine
looks like a couple of layers of noise, with an erosion filter over the top
simple and effective π
@tulip viper Do you know any good tutorials on how you made the hologram board? https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/221798511975464960/511270875316748299/unknown.png
but its not an exit π
well then maybe Door that leads into a random dark room that has a static tv that will throw up all over the place with static
Might need a bigger sign for that tho
lol
I've got a component attached to a static mesh and I want it to change position based on the size of the static mesh, whats the best way to do that?
lerp?
actually i got it working in a different way, thanks though
@worldly night i do not have a tutorial i just did them myself
using emissive and translucent materials
Yeah i thought so
clock chimes 3 days and 3 hours remain
teaching your teammates to use Git during a game jam is not the best idea π
I wonder if Perforce is more noob-friendly
as long as they understand what "Checking out" means
@bold nimbus My impressions so far (we used Git w/ Gitlab for a few months, trying Perforce for the gamejam) is that Perforce is easier (initial config is about the same difficulty wise) mainly due to being able to do (mostly) everything inside UE4 and not having to worry about merges. At the end of the day someone has to know more than just using it and be the repo master though
wip map, gonna be only in one place and it will also show where the puzzle pieces are located
If your file is more than 1GB, you may utilize the Butler tool to upload your files to Itch.io.
does that mean the project can be above 1GB?
well, obviously, but by how much?
I think up to 30 GB
But if you're making a 30 GB game in 7 days you're either doing something very wrong or very right
haha nah it might be like 3GB
the LogitechG plugin is like 200MB on its own
and Advanced Sessions is 686MB, or is there a way to reduce that?
wow, that's absurdly large o.O sure you're doing shipping builds?
Epic said that 30GB is allowed in the livestream, if you find it the livestream they went over using Butler to upload
I would imagine by only 100MB or so right? Textures are the real killer
Goto your project folder after building
Checkout saved/cooked
That will show you what's taking up space
@dry jetty thanks, Ill check it out... I got butler downloaded, just not setup yet
feels nice to hold the world record for a Tutorial Zone All Anomalies speedrun
(oof, finished processing, here it is in 720p) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S64D6fla7Kk&feature=youtu.be
It's kind of beautiful
It's like when you see something terrible, but it's also really intersting so you can't look away
there's nothing better than a good pun
Anyone know of a good low poly furniture set for furnishing an apartment?
Whoa this is gorgeous. Thanks @glass fossil
PILOT CAM! π
@waxen trout Yeah all of Synth Studios packs are great
@glass fossil mine is not so beautiful
my favorite part about that is the comment that says "comment"
Hadn't even noticed! probably pressed C by mistake
@tulip viper who did the UI?
I was about to say it was nice
But nevermind
/s
It's actually really good
Mine...not so much
π
ours is the equivalent of notecards on a stick in front of the player π
its not done yet π but when it is done, shit will scream sexy π
And the bugs are real
i need to display the boosting
and some other things π
we just had our p4 server crash
like hard core crash.. i have to upload repo to new p4 server install π
NEVER FAILS, every jam...
what
FUnny thing is...I used Git this time around, home server
Since it's way faster/easier for solo
This Jam going to be EPIC.
I really hope we will finish the game as we imagined it.
lol
I'm hoping the same
I am way out of scope here
And haven't even started level design yet
@rigid fog Thumbs up for that. I know you could do that. Just wishing you luck.
It's really nice that this jam is 7 days, I don't think we'd finish on time if it was 5 like usual
we just started level design today π
well murphys law just hit
power outage just hit the house, no power, no internet, no computer.....
FML
10 hours left for me to work on the game
5 hours today and tomorrow
Need to get all audio done today
And fix the map
And to fix 1 glitch with doors, that's easy
to submit your project you have to set it to Released on itch.io right?
just wanna make sure I haven't missed something else
I think you need your projects to be published?
Only other way to get people to see it is via secret link afaik
ya I just set it to Public and disable downloads and unlisted
and was able to submit after
nice to know it's ready to go
now i have 2 days to make everything, blueprinter just left how great
gonna kashoot myself
Is anyone foolish enough this time to attempt to stream a playthrough of all the games?
Over 300 games?
Iβll do it
300 games 5 minutes each 1500 minutes 25 hours ezpz lemon squeezie
Yeah, days of content for potential streamers, with almost guaranteed viewers
Iβll stream every game straight π , I donβt have a life itβs fine, gonna clear my hard drive ya
All though maybe Iβll do half the games
All of them is a bit much
Wasn't planning to do anything this jam, but might try doing a 1-day jam tomorrow
This is gonna be difficult hahah π
Yep, fulltime dev
Oh cool made an games I can check out?
IIRC, when Allar tried to stream an entire megajam, it took him something like 2.5 days almost non-stop xD
Oh hahahha fuck that xD
Maybe Iβll pick 100 games
And get the ending of them all
oh wow
looks really nice
mine is still better jk no offense xd dont hate me pls
ok only static sfx and door opening and closing sounds left
Congrats @glass fossil
I on the other hand just scrapped my whole game and have to start fresh π
π
starbucks would take issue with me dragging in my 2*26" monitors and full size tower
π i got my 17" laptop that takes up the entire table π
easy solution for that, just win the laptop from the jam
but power is out at the house, so... jsut have to
what a perfect excuse to drink extra coffee
@tulip viper I did just that for Summer Jam 2017
lol
yeah but they only got one bathroom for... like 50 people
π
yeah we had a p4 issue and power out... was nuts
i was waitng outside the doors to ge tin and upload my p4 files
yeah π
the effort was worth it, hopefully we will win this one π
You got a good team
Lots of good teams though π
Which is good... lots of fun games to play
But very bad if you really want to win π
only time will tell π
fixed 2 bugs \o/
day after tomorrow
1 day, 23 hours, 41 minutes according to itch :p
still two full days left
Totally thought I designed within scope, but I was wrestling bugs in the core game loop until yesterday. Leaves today and tomorrow for levels/art/bells/whistles. π
Thanks!
Hello everyone! Looks like some sweet games ya'll are working on. I have also been slaving away. Hopefully it will turn out but I think I have bitten off a lot of work as always haha
Scope always seems smaller before you try implementing everything, eh?
For me level design is taking a lot longer than expected.
I was tempted to use pre-made models on the jam, but I felt I was up to making the models in time. We'll see!
Here's a sneak-peek! (no, not really) π
@amber latch sorry about the late reply was sleeping, when he left we still needed: interaction, useable doors/ladders, cutscene stuff, (and more so pretty much we only had movement)
Holy crap thereβs only 2 days left!!!????
So in four days he only did charater movement? π think your better off with out him
@cedar spindle gogogogogogo
@carmine kindle I'll be streaming all the games like usual
I actually have been able to get roughly 4 hours of sleep everyday. I'd sleep more if I didn't have a fulltime gig.
#gamedevlife
@glass fossil no i have an amazing team π
rofl, so cold to that game's creator @tulip viper π¦
Glad to hear you'll be streaming the games @rigid fog, although I wonder how long it will take this time. Most signups for an Unreal jam yet.
I don't know how you stay sane, @rigid fog . The only reason I didn't do gamejams before was because I'd be working during jam hours. Fortunately, I recently quit my job.
lots of signups maybe, but very few submissions so far
obviously most will be towards the end
Heh, well, I am pretty motivated this time around because I had a cool idea and small goals (Learn how to use Gameplay Abilities and learn more about animation, which tied hand and hand to each other actually)
but I expected more than 3 weekend entries
But, I am super out of scope, but don't want to downscope just yet
Tomorrow...tomorrow will be the day I make cuts
Heh, I finally felt comfortable with the level of bugs in the game yesterday night around midnight.
is official ,I'm breaking out the calculus to finish our game
@tulip viper Wow, the art is great!
thanks π
still got a lot to go, and I was not the only one who did it @dull basin also did some
actulaly she has done most of the textures π
and all the sexy things, I just rigged it π
hm
Wonder i I got banned
π
@safe island @copper carbon Not sure if you all use multiple servers, but can you check if east coast users are able to use Epic Launcher
Or access websites
getting a crapton of random errors in editor also
Which is actually a bit scary, I guess I never bothered to think that the Editor was connected to your servers
LogHttp: Warning: 0000023A52E15080: request failed, libcurl error: 7 (Couldn't connect to server) LogHttp: Warning: 0000023A52E15080: libcurl info message cache 0 (Found bundle for host datarouter.ol.epicgames.com: 0x23a75507fa0 [serially]) LogHttp: Warning: 0000023A52E15080: libcurl info message cache 1 (Hostname in DNS cache was stale, zapped) LogHttp: Warning: 0000023A52E15080: libcurl info message cache 2 ( Trying 52.6.79.2...) LogHttp: Warning: 0000023A52E15080: libcurl info message cache 3 (TCP_NODELAY set) bunch of random IPs
Well, pornhub works
So I know it's not my internet π
lol - Launcher works too π
I'm at home and just launched it...
Cant' even access UE4 websites
Man... I wonder if ISP did something silly
hmm.. interesting, finally got this message on launcher:
At least it lets me bypass it, but yeah, something's not right
When the soup refuses to become good, it's time to throw everything up and start from scratch
what does the rules say about advertising in the megajam?
like, can I advertise a friends EP-release on a poster in the background of the game.. or should I rather not? π¨
Noice
did the jam without using anything other than start content assets
I somehow managed to break a blueprint i wasnt even working on
haha
I thought you couldnβt use the starting stuff
you can - you can use anything you just need to declare it
yup yup
There was also that other bit about something other than default materials used too.
assets should have a material other than the default
"The game must include custom gameplay that exceeds the gameplay found in Epic Gamesβ starter templates.
All art assets in the game must have a material other than the default applied to it."
thems be the rules
I actually had a contingency plan where I had a set of assets to declare if for some reason I didn't have time to make fresh ones. π
hehe
this took me >4 hours. after the first hour I was doing it out of spite. I present to you, the arc prediction particle beam!
Quick tip to everyone, gather all of the needed contact information as soon as you can
It makes it a lot less stressful for when you go to submit
Brain fried, forgot where live.
import-transform of my pizza might have to be tweaked a bit
Small art dump of what I made for the game jam, I modelled all assets and made the map. We probably wont be submitting as we didnt get the game play to where we would have liked, But figured I would show anyway.
the feeling you get when you only have 2 days left on a JAM but want to add 5 years worth of content π
Holy cow
I mean, you have some time left
Just submit as a walking tour
I'm so envious(i think that's the right phrase) of people who can 3D Model
@queen thistle You might not be the only one submitting a psudo walking simulator haha
But nothing like Character, Anims, rigging,
I spent this whole year learning how to program and it's like I can do cool stuff now but if I want to express that stuff it looks terrible since I suck at 3D modeling
Although I did meet a really awesome 3D Modeler in the Spring Jam and another in the Summer jam and they're both super talented
yeah, runs at a solid 115/120 cap on my machine so good enough π
added in wind shaders for the trees
feels good, man
little bit of life added 110%
ive got more code than i care to admit hooked up to the event tick
i can feel zak parrish judging me
I decided to put in my first cast nodes today after 5 days of freedom.
seems realistic π https://imgur.com/a/z2JK46R
That one tree on the bottom left is having conflicted priorities
and im doing the exact opposite, i can make cool shit but I cant code it.... now I am learning to code so that I can make my good looking stuff do game stuff π
maybe clamp the values
on left or right, cause it just seems like a value issue
unless that is the effect you are going for
I have no idea why that's so exaggerated on bottom left
there's a sweeping sine wave of wind about 2000 units in period
so it shouldn't be that different in such a small area
this is very exaggerated strength though, ~1000
set down to 10 for the actual game
It looks like that one poly is going the opposite of what it should
i am assuming you are using vertex color or something for how its effecting it
Somehow
i have one more animation to make and i am dreading it π
run cycle for this mofo π
but we have to have him running on a hamster wheel π
thats how they drive their rocketship π
ahahaha
I do not envy you. I am making a first person game for a reason... No animation needed. π
because that's the easiest way I can knock out in 10 minutes? π
just.... tedious π
Indeed
simple grass shader does the same π
and apply a gradiant
using R or G msask
for the vertex color/wind effect π
no WPO needed
does the exact same thing
@cedar spindle the reward is great though π so it will be worth it
like i got the little bugger screaming when the rocket is about to die, and then i got them typing in the chairs lol
so much fun
but the thing is... I'm already finished with the effect π€
Yeah your characters are fantastic. 10/10 humor points for sure haha
Can't wait
Did you talk slowly and speed up your vocals?
and we got cool glasses and shit too
that is the hamster wheel
and the bomb ship
π€ gerbal space program eh
that's some really good stuff
(just tweaked the shader with object position to determine phase π all fix't now)
π€¦ I should have connected the dots on that earlier too
shrugs its all good
Oh my gosh thats amazing
its a hard theme
It really is
you either go 100% literal
or you go super high concept
took us 5 hours to come up with a concept, and we basically said, hamsters + explosions + something = win
maybe...
fake book covers is a passion of mine
thats amazing xd
@glass fossil what other books have you made? if they're as good as that one they must be funny
I think that Iβll keep those a secret for you to find out π
The surprise is the best part
hahahhahaha
Since our game is so focused on interaction we're hiding a ton of easter eggs for people to find and laugh at
yessss
It's actually pretty fun since in the past 2 game jams I haven't gotten a chance to express my funnier side since it's been so gameplay based
Also, physics based error messages!
ah coolio ill find them all!
- I feel like quitting this game jam because: 1, im not gonna win anything which i wasn't planning on in the first place, but 2. im not having fun since i missed so much time and fucked around so long
also writting in red is so much better XD
my code on this is either really good or really bad and im not sure which
because i made everything modular and awesome
but then it all turned into spagetti
heh
I'm burning through some spaghetti and making it modular in preparation for QA day tomorrow
general question, is it bad practice to use these two?
no way!
because it's been a life saver for making stuff work
instance editable is essential for making blueprints that can be individually customized in the editor
expose on spawn similarly for values you know at the time you spawn
Oh awesome
you can shoot yourself in the foot sure, but they exist for a reason π
My struct ended up getting out of control
heh
It started out fine with the name description and mesh, but then more and more had to be added
Calling it a night, finally finalized the doorways
https://youtu.be/wrUuUE1ImVU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arsqwT8QagU
Update on how the door portals are coming along
Did you follow a tutorial for those?
oh nice! when i implimened mine i had to follow one, havent used render targets before
that's really smooth π
I've watch a lot of tutorials on how to do that kind of portal door system but the problem is all of them had them directly link them to each other, this has a handler that links them and can randomize them with a command.
only problem is that they only teleport the player, not other objects. right now I have some code that attaches them to the player capsule and allows me to drag them through
Today gonna add an Easter egg referring to my previous game, which sadly died
And then idk what to do
I could search on Google or yt about subtle things that add something to a game π
I feel Incrementshould be changed to intcrement
get a good pun in therer
Ffs
The puns
At first I thought it's a writing mistake
But then I thought about int
Does the final submission to the ue4 jam have to be a development build or a shipping build? Or is either fine?
9 more people need to join!
i can make 9 more accounts
π
@cerulean geode shipping is better than development, because there is no console and i think its less MB
Noice @tulip viper
oh wow ... that upload to itch.io is superslow! you should really do a buttler push today and start pushing increments to don't get any bad surprises tomorrow
how slow is slow?
Augh, just packaged my game and the texture that should read a rendertarget is black
Works in PIE and "Launch standalone"
People with same symptom online seems to have fixes that don't help
switching to opengl...
Preliminary link if anyone is interested - couple of bugs that are already fixed, but would like to know if anyone finds any other problems prior to me uploading a final version:
https://ananonymousmoose.itch.io/objective-unreality
(let me know via DM, I'm going to be out all day today)
@maiden loom works!
huzzah
needs a screenshot π
I'll get back to arguing with rendertarget wile this is downloading!
π
I had a lot of fun with render targets xD
right, off out for company stuff - catch you all later
@maiden loom mine was about 30 KiB/s on a 100MBit synchronus line
@tulip viper are you working alone? With a team? Your game looks suspiciously professional. In a good way
@hollow horizon working with a team π and thanks
what is your role in your team?
problem was to do with the way I was creating dynamic material instance it seems. Just having the portals share for now, since only one should be visible at a time anyhow
Woo! fixed my rendertargets
(out of order messages due to image upload)
so... I learned I cannot even trust launch to reveal bugs. Must package game
very nice looking!
@glass fossil Thanks! Think I still have a way to go to look as good as @tulip viper and some others though π
Yep, looks like a nice thing made of shapes other than cubes π
bug with sound fixed
I swear, UE4 can detect I am in a jam, and increase it's crash rate by 1000%
(not really, just making a joke from it crashing again, prob due to me poking at things I am unfamilar with)
getting in the habit of doing ctrl+shift+s anytime I stop and think for a mo
wait
is that a shortcut for save all?
my maaaaan, you just saved me 700 clicks a day
I noticed a feature yesterday too
in the variables panel of a blueprint, you can click the icon to the left of them to convert to array
not sure how useful I'll ever find that, but I now know it exists
β€ you too
it knows that you know ctrl shift s now
lol
packaged game
gonna package 64 and 32 bit because why not
have time
is this ok as icon? xd
@craggy zodiac if you do a teleport on overlap it would be pretty easy for objects me thinks
submission submitted
Whipping up a quick menu
Aaahhhhh... 4.21 keeps crashing... I can't do anything. And I'm just placing meshes in the level...
Hope the Escher foundation does not come after me
@tepid light I've been getting some unexpected crashes in 4.20 this week... getting tempted to install debugging symbols or do a source build so I can see whats up (and perhaps become an engine contrubitor!)
editor symbols seriously worth it if you have space
the title is not visible very well @oblique cairn
but then on the other side, how would you fix that
@glass fossil I'll change its colour, thanks!
oh ok
if the outline fades to another colour it should be more clear
I love UE4 when it works right π
oh nice
@hollow horizon animatior, rigging, texturing, 3d artist, VO, and general art view.
build lighting 0% ahhhhh maybe later
This is my first time using static lighting in UE4 (for performance with portals)
I don't like it. Except the performance is great
Way prefer dynamic lighting - particularly with LPV
crashed while trying to setup a music toggle... twice π
@tepid light you were very brave beta-testing 4.21 for us while MegaJaming
I thank you for your service
@rigid fog Yeah, I kinda regret that. To be fair, I don't know if thats 4.21 or if I'm just doing somethign wrong.. But physics are now broken too.
Given how 4.20 is acting, I wish I was on 4.21
perhaps this is a test epic inflicts on devs during james to see if they will persist
(or just the nature of a large complex bit of C++ full of cutting edge tech π )
@dry jetty regarding the teleport on overlap, it would but the way that the 2d scene render works it looks horrible, nothing like valve's portals.
Can the itch.io butler tool do incremental uploads when packaging your ue4 game as a single encrypted pak? Do you guys bother with encrypting your gamejam entry or just package the game as a collection of uassets?
I don't encrypt
@oblique cairn what error are you getting in the logs?
If itβs βMissing something.dllβ I was getting that a bunch as well but I found a solution for it
Does this jam have a special category for <= 100 MB games?
Maybe if it's a secret category, but they didn't claim as such on the livestream
No special category for that I think
Well I guess too bad π¦
@glass fossil I'll have a look now. the logs in my games saved folder?
I made a somewhat silly trailer for my game π https://youtu.be/0lbnsBUthvs
Theme is "Reality is often inaccurate" The game is a calm, exploration/puzzle game - So I went for an action movie style epic trailer, of course.
I think theyβre in that folder
it's probably just a question on the submission form
note that all of the other categories are probably options on the form π
If art is your strong suit you could make a walking sim
the whale game last time was epic
@glass fossil Good call getting me to check the logs. Seems there is a folder in saved for the crash reports, which includes a copy of the standard log. 12 crashes for this project (less than I was imagining)
The end of some logs look related to the voxelplugin, a couple mention attempting to move a music file (which is weird, Don't think I ever tried to change their location)
A few may be related to the space skybox I am using:

I'll get debug symbols installed later, both for myself and to send epic better reports
@minor hemlock whale game?
The whale game was nuts
It's almost deadline, my dudes
@oblique cairn https://bleakmillgames.itch.io/jonathans-whale
@glass fossil Good point, I'll get a build uploading while doing last-moment extra bits of work
Good that I already made and uploaded my game, no stress :P
@minor hemlock That does look nice!
@queen thistle - Submit anyway!
@cerulean geode - Shipping is preferred unless you're doing an iOS game, in which we need the development build
Thank you for the answer Amanda! Apreciated.
Of course - sorry about the delay.
Got punched in teh face with a cold the last couple days -_-
Super pumped to play all your games though π
Time to start slashing scope!
haha yup!
our game is really starting to come together nicely now π tweaking the main menu today https://imgur.com/a/8j8MZlP
Thatβs cool
If we submit game on https://itch.io/jam/2018-epic-megajam - can we update that submission?
I just uploaded current version to https://chozabu.itch.io/unscher - but hope to add another level or two before the compo closes
@oblique cairn yes, until the deadline
then uploads are locked until the judging period is over
we plan on uploading before midnight tonight even though we may tweak later
OK, I'll do the submission now as well then! Thanks
also @minor hemlock game is llooking good!
Thanks! I feel like it's teetering at 99% of being a real game (some menuing stuff is lacking like switching between gamepad and keyboard prompts... And several hours worth of more levels...)
that's all part of being a game jam game!
Might do a postmortem after the jam on my website if I don't forget everything while catching up on π€
Will you share that with us if you do?
Absolutely!
π
Pretty pleased at how all of my materials and particles turned out since I started roughly at "I've heard these words before".. so I've got to show them off ;)
aww, that's great
Oh man this last 24 hours is going to be pretty chaotic but i think we might make it
SC πͺ OPE
ok this wasn't intended but it is trippy as heck
How do you feel about submitting games that are only half finished? π
Good practice for submitting a complete game next jam :D
Based on my Trello board if i can achieve one task every ~30 minutes until submission i can theoretically finish game without cutting original scope. However that would probably be insane, plus lighting builds take almost 30 minutes at this point so.... selective cutting has begun. π
Have you heard of hacknplan? It's kind of like trello but focused on game development
I've looked at it in the past but... too many features π
gotta keep it simple or I won't bother and then no one benefits
Out of curiosity, would a plugin for the engine that takes your trello tasks and puts them in the editor be helpful?
Maybe like it could let you place them in the level and other stuff
@glass fossil Great idea.
Connecting a trello card to a note that you can place in the level.
Ok I am getting some mixed feedback here
With a tool to make a screenshot.
If you come up with a list of what you think would be helpful just shoot me a message, I want to write a plugin for the editor to get better at my C++ so I'll probably make it
like for bug reporting: "Player cant pass through this door", place an actor, take a screenshot. On trello level designer can click it to have the editor focused on said door.
Yeah there could be some pretty cool things you could do with it
@glass fossil I haven't used hacknplan, no. Been using Trello for years it's just comfortable for me. Not sure I could make use of a trello plugin for the editor but it could be cool. π€·
Hey guys. Sorry I didn't have time to finish my blog post on submitting to itch.io in time for the MegaJam. I'll be around tonight if anyone has questions about publishing with butler, so feel free to tag me. π
in our game... hamster power is the best power! β€
no hamsters were harmed in the posting of this video, (*that you know of)
I may have just turned off my pc accidentally and lost like
4 hours of progress
Actually it saves when you play in editor window right?
π
phew it looks like everything i changed was saved
How long left?
I guess my game will be incomplete. π
Release the rest as dlc
^
OK.
The trick is incorporate the incompleteness into your game
Running out of time to make assets? Theme is reality isnβt accurate so throw some chairs in the water
Boom coral reef
Yeah since the theme is about inaccuracy.
Good point!
Making assets takes so much time, if they need to be good.
@glass fossil yeah our game was really art focused and I wish I could contribute more but Iβm a potato at 3D modeling
I gotta add that to the list of things to learn
Don't underestimate the experience of bringing small projects to public fruition instead of sitting on then forever :)
^
@glass fossil I subscribed to cgcookie earlier this year, highly recommend if you're going the blender route
Iβve got like a million blender tutorials saved lol
The more projects you actually see through to the end and ship, the better each one will be.
Whenever I see a good thumbnail I hit the save button
Blender gurus donut tutorial is a great free resource too :)
I really enjoy doing these jams, working with a team is great and as someone whoβs just coming out of my first year of game development theyβve been a massive help for me
As a solo dev the community and teamwork is invaluable π
@glass fossil learning any skill, usually takes a lot of time to lean. Good luck with your submission!
I think after this jam wraps up Iβm going to start my first larger project
Iβve done like 5-6 game jams this year so Iβm kind of looking forward to a new challenge
I think after this Jam, I will take some time to rest.
\o/ awesome, already got some good ideas for it?
I'm headed back to my web serial game after this
and i got a mobile game to finish haha
7 days is a long time, but not long enough to make a game and still sleep well
each new jam, new stuff is learned
Partly is showing me how bad my coding is , im gonna take a deep dive into c++ after this
This jam was a nice break from c++ for me
One can only go through so much text to speech of C++ Primer
π€£
I have progressed to where I wanted my jamgame to be by this past Sunday, and now I will cram the rest in tonight π
I'm debating staying up and working on the game or sleeping for my physics test
I think we might be close to wrapping up the project so hopefully it'll be done soonish
In the summer jam we submitted with like 20 minutes before the deadline
Lol sleep definitely
I'm forcing myself to stop updating mine. I have curtains in my game that change colors that would have been perfect for light sync but I'm out of time.
This has been a blast though and a lot of the submissions are really good! Great Discord channel too. Trying to get some of my students to join and learn.
Alrighty just finished up writing 3 compositions now time to slap my hands and feet on stuff for 20 minutes before calling audio a day. π
Nice @cedar spindle! Always happy to hear about folks doing original audio for their jam games. π
Gotta get them juicy footstep sounds
It's often left until the last minute.
Yeah I always make my own audio. Unfortunately I don't leave myself a lot of time for it
As long as you have fun doing it and give it the love you can with the time you have.
I'm happier than most jams about these music tracks though
Sweet. Looking forward to hearing the results.
This time I used no click, quantizing or grid. Both faster and... Unique sounding
Yep!
π
I moved some notes around afterward to fix errora
Well that sounds like a blast. Now I'm even more interested in hearing the results.
Well you'll only have to wait a maximum of 13 hours haha.
Also no purcussion for obvious reasons
I figured.
Definitely going to keep an eye out for it and play when I have time this weekend!
Who else is pulling an all-nighter?
β me
Almost gg
has anyone else had issues exporting shape keys from blender2.79 to ue4?
ok, found the import morph targets checkbox in the fbx importer. Would be nice if it had a searchbar
π
What does prod stand for? Iβve seen some game makers with it in theyβre names/ studio names
/ what does it mean
Productions ?
other than that... /shrug
I need to learn me some audio stuff eventually. I only know the bare minimum, wish I had more time to dive deep into audio design and the new audio engine... "soon"
So definitely jealous of @civic dock and @cedar spindle
Ohhh productions makes sense
I have done so poop this jam
Youβve done better then me
Went for polish before level design
So...I'll be building levels in a few hours hopefully
I quit the jam π
Nah, I wasted two days anyway. First day, nothing was done. I had a bare minimum idea.
Second day... I worked a full day, then after work, I decided to spend more time on planning/fleshing out my idea
Next time... taking vacation for the whole week though
It was rough this week between work and jam
I think the 2 day jams are better because you know how small you have to go and still put work in
But, this was a great week. I learned so much about Gameplay Abilities (and even more confused and lost by them at the same time!) and also Animation Systems in Unreal. So it was a great learning experience.
Is it possible to import a cutscene from something else instead of making it in unreal?
Well if it makes you feel better I'm still lacking significant gameplay @rigid fog . Just finished up some sweet footsteps though.
At least it will be a really immersive walking simulator if all else fails
Haha
hmm, morph targets were imported fine, but they are not playing with the character
Oh thatβs fancy
lol, cool
@cedar spindle dude... I haven't even done my MAIN GAMEPLAY MECHANIC yet
I've been fucking around with all these skills and animations
look at this thing
I get too caught up in the details
π« I've just spent this entire week trying to create something that could pass off as a game, I worked , managed, lead my team only to to end up with a project that is poorly optimized and while it works in the editor does not work when built and packaged. And right now I am so π«
I set the alarm on my speaker to go off very loudly in 5 hours
That is not going to be a fun wake up call but hey at least itβll worj
@rigid fog I hear ya. I spent a ton of time on level design and lighting before even having any gameplay. You still have some time depending on if you're doing an all-nighter or not. What you have looks great though so far!
Is light cursing in voice audio allowed?
no rule against it, but Epic does like to be 'USA Family Friendly' with stuff sometimes
they don't do deadline extensions
@onyx moon I believe they would prefer not, but games have won before with relatively inappropriate content. They just muted it during the live stream or avoided the inappropriate part of the game.
alright Ill just use different words
If it's core to your theme some mild language I don't think would be an issue but π€· what do I know?
a team member is having issues with connecting to perforce all of a sudden, is anyone suffering issues or?
I assume once submitted it'll still be possible to edit the game page (e.g. add screenshots etc?)
but I also assume uploading new copies of the game will be blocked for some time?
hm
@maiden loom that's what I remember, yes
@craggy zodiac noooo, any leads on why packaged builds don't work?
heh, so much Synty in the jam sbumissions xD
*submissions
54 submissions so far
place your bets as to how many there will be in the last ~5 or so hours xD
my bet is 55
making a quick extra level
My bet is 170
Could be more, who knows? 285?
202
Waiting for our itch dude to wake up and submit the game to the jam π¬
https://imaginegames.itch.io/anomaly if anyone wants to give any gameplay feedback and help us win :p
if we're sharing links :p
https://itch.io/jam/2018-epic-megajam/rate/330169
So many games I want to play!
@minor hemlock nice download size! grabbing a copy
Grab a copy for your friends and parents too! And your grandparents friends!
Pass it around on all your discarded 256mb flash drives
@maiden loom played your game the other day, really cool. My main complaint is difficulty walking while using the lens (which I think is intentional, but not sure if it helps or hinders gameplay)
it's not intentional, but unfortunately it's because of the mannequin run animations
it adds a lot of movement to the clavicle that I couldn't get around
did you actually finish it?
I was worried the proper puzzle room was too difficult
@maiden loom no - I think I got to the "proper" puzzle room, shortly after the sneaky bit with portals, but ran off to keep working on my own game
hah, no worries
@maiden loom you may be able to do a quick fix in the animBP with FABRIK or "two bone IK"
Perhaps at 70% blend to keep some motion
I'm not actually using any IK at all, but I guess if I wanted to improve it after the jam I could look into it
Yes - I mean I can tell you are not using IK, but it could be used to reduce the motion in the arm quickly and easily
just IK towards playerlocation+forwarddir*50 and perhaps rotate handbone to a sensible angle
@minor hemlock incredibly fun game!
I might get maybe an hour or so to look at it after work, hehe
but it'll be close to submission deadline
@minor hemlock when pressing escape to pause the game, then hitting escape again to close the menu: the movement gets broken!
I have to press escape again, & hit resume to fix it
(to the tune of last day of xmas)
On the last day of game jame
Epic gave to me
6 engine crashes
6 engine crashes
and an unsaved tree
(I really will install debugging symbols after game jam!)
debugging symbols so important
shouldn't be optional xD
or at least optional and installed by default
~20GB, more than doubles size of engine
"My thing crashes!"
"What does the error message say?"
"Debugging symbols not installed"
Β―_(γ)_/Β―
should perhaps seriously request people install them when installing engine
Suspect it is prob 3rdparty code, like voxel plugin, or some marketplace content. Either way, looking forwards to helping fix it!
uploading final version, will paste link here when done
will try out atomics game meanwhile!
thanks \o/
I tried to put as much polish as I could into every element of the game I touched, that's why plekters bug report frustrated me so much π
haha
I tried pretty hard to avoid there being any real bugs, which is why mine is so short
but inevitably someone's gonna break it
omfg
I fucking finally finished the classes/skills
no levels yet
lol
let's see, if I shower and eat... I have 4 hours or so
@rigid fog someone was asking who was going to stream games, did you mention you were?
@minor hemlock Nice - my first thoughts are:
In the opening section, with some example anomalies - I didn't actually notice scanning them changed them - though I did notice right away in the tutorial level after. (this may be me not paying attention correctly)
Tutorial level went smoothly!
First real level - I scanned a few things without noticing, partly from shooting arc not matching prediction arc. Once the voice said I had done enough, and could proceed to next level, or scan more - I could not find the way to the next level
@minor hemlock Also, I wanted to be able to scan the solid cloud floating through town π
@oblique cairn I'm really interested that shooting arc didn't match prediction arc
Feature complete (LOL). Now for the packaging game π
if I knew more about particle systems I'd add a thing at the end to make it more obvious where the arc stopped, was that the issue?
@minor hemlock real shot went less far than prediction arc, by about 10% or 20%
donut on the top is the portal to the next level >.o we're bad at making that obvious, went through a lot of iterations already π
Running on a 4k monitor, may be related (but prob not, standard aspect ratio)
I'm doing 4k as well
@minor hemlock oooh - I'd tried to scan that too, and thought it was weird I could not
hm. the spider has a very small collision sphere, could that have collided on something early? (small as in the size of the orb on its head)
@minor hemlock no - It really fires less far, can send video if desired?
yes please!
@mortal cloak what is the problem with your skill in packaged build?
so many jam games submitted as puzzle, I LOVE IT
@minor hemlock seems a good fit for theme π (also, upl, oading vid at potato quality, as I have slow net and am uploading own game at the same time)
@minor hemlock http://chozabu.net/autopush/anom.mov <-- hope that is clear enough. I should have done some more shots on the ground to show what I mean more clearly
oh yeah, the arc doesn't extend as far as you think!!
it's only a half second worth of travel for the projectile I believe
Ooooh
like I said, wish I knew enough about particle systems to make it more obvious that it ended and when it clipped/etc
OK, I perhaps should have realised that!
there is a cloud to find on the next level though π
that's the level where our level designer really let his freak flag fly. so hard.
Love the loading effect when pressing continue, I saw a nice tut doing a similar thing (meaning to give it a go)
one question.. did you feel the arc as implemented feels natural for shooting? or would you prefer something that doesn't take player velocity into account
we have mixed opinions on our team π
most games use arcs without player velocity, but the projectile does use the added velocity so aiming is hard..
@minor hemlock Not sure - I quite like it the way it is
Europe's official music video for 'The Final Countdown'. Click to listen to Europe on Spotify: http://smarturl.it/EuropeSpot?IQid=EuropeTFC As featured on 19...
Actually - if it is doing the correct arc - and you want it to be more precise, I don't think you need to detect collision? just make it 5x as long?
it'd be too helpful then π
The cloud is damn high π
I might add a beam distance meter on the gun if I have time π€ nah. I can think of one annoying edge case already that'll take too much time to debug
Hmm, I just uploaded new version of game to itch, same file name, switched back to tab and it seems like nothing has happened... Perhaps I need a new filename. Or perhaps I am looking at the wrong tab?
