#game-jam-chat

Eyes into the void
Here's my team's entry: https://jfaw-love.itch.io/granny
I don't think it'll win the jam or be a finalist but it was alright to make
We overscoped and had some commitment issues but we were able to piece something playable together in the end, at least
Wow submitting on time was pretty stressful lol
Yeah
I clocked 46 hours in this jam, I think it's the most I've put into one with this small of a time window
i dont event want to think about how much time i put in
Alright we uploaded credits on our game page
i thought iwas going to pass out at like 12.. shortness of breath and everything
lets just say im on summer vacatio nand dont have much of a life
it was just hunger
Thanks for the reminder ๐ @compact cedar
@gaunt copper and me were trying to make a VR game for a first time:
https://shadowriverue4.itch.io/metabubbles
hmm i dont see my submission in the list, should it show instantly?
Does your game page show as submitted?
@stable kiln have you submitted it to the jam?
yea think so
submitted 17 minutes before the deadline :phew:
it wants me to create a new page
โฐ 7 minutes left! โฐ
but i allready put my page in the epic submission
Sneaky Allar
It's about time!
@stable kiln link to your page?
Where do I submit these?
@compact cedar Nice MetaBubbles! Cool splitting and joining, nice translucency. Nice!
i'm super happy, this jam i manage to submit and also have it working ... although i had to cut stuff out ๐
It doesn't show as submitted to me @stable kiln :/
@grizzled zenith on the main jam page when you submit it will have a form
@stable kiln refresh? It did that to me for a minute after I made my game page
man, so many good games this jam, i have a feeling
@grizzled zenith you submit those when you enter your game
I may be 2 minutes late, will it still let me submit?
all the way at bottom of itch.io page
public
save
and then go back to the ue4 jam page
when you press submit
1 minute left!
i did put it public
I'M OFFICIALLY SO SCARED
well now its closed GG
i seriously hope you made it in be4 the lock
I did
wait, I'm a bit late. Now I'm afraid I can't submit it
I just did a lot of last hour tweaks
Only 5 On the Go
mobile is one of the major winning categories
i'm shocked only 5 submissions for it.
that just jumped up
13 now
well i was in time set everything to public but the jam page wouldnt take my submission
now i just deleted it, If i cant enter no1 wil ever see my great work of art
yeah same, I truely hope they still allow for submissions ๐
I'm half way uploading it
oh man
i still had 15 min on the clock but it wouldnt take the submission
Normally the jam would end at 6AM for me so I'd have plenty of time before going to sleep
not this time
Ok so it has uploaded. What now? ๐
no buttons!
nothing, ur too late
Don't panic guys and for sure - don't delete your games! I think the best bet would be to PM folks from Epic and explain them the situation.
yeah, I think I'll do that
PM them and explain but also use this as a learning lesson guys.
As soon as you have a playable version upload it early
do that!
and then you can overwrite it later
hey i was in time
What @south dew said
because you guys are right at the deadline
it wouldnt take my page, i could see it in the dropdown under ballsofsnow
but try and make sure you upload a working version as soon as possible.
but it didnt add me to the list it wanted me to make a new page and upload again
i made my page and put it public B4 i pressed the submit button on the epic page
On the other note: it's my first Game Jam and I'm surprised how many submissions there're with a similar theme. I had "mad scientist + chickens" game and I see the exact that concept haha, and a couple of other chicken games.
- "mad scientist + chickens" game in mind
this is within the time with a good margin of error
ahh well whatever, allready spend more time on tryin to submit it than makin the game so fec it ๐
Not the case for me ๐
Sent a PM to @copper carbon in UE4 forums
While I can't submit it officially, here it is!
@stable kiln i think you're missing the point. everyone here supports you. you don't need to be defensive and provide evidence. I was simply just stating that they asked that people upload and submit to the jam (both steps) early and often.
I was simply asking you to use it as a learning opportunity to spare yourself this trouble in future jams.
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
i need this cow game
After 5 days and 10 minutes of hard work, I need help!
@safe island I miss my submission by one second.
i tried for 20 min gettin it added to the list within the timeline ๐
but whatever tough luck ๐
glad i only spend like 3 hours making it ๐
Is anyone watching dallars stream atm?
EscalatorNoEditor?
@safe island Hey Tim, you are probably getting flooded with these. Well I started uploading the the game jam on itch.io before 3, but the upload pushed me over so I could not submit to the gamejam. Is there any way I can still enter my teams game?
still i was able to pick my game page from the dropdown , but couldnt hit any submit button , only a button that takes me to making a new page , tried that but said i allready had a page named like that
basically a callstack loop , i hate those
i uploaded exactly 18 min B4 the deadline with page allready set up and couldnt get past the epic submission form
weird stuff
i had some fun makin this guy tho, and thats what counts most ๐
Looks very ET
Well looks like there's no getting the game we made added to the jam, link for those interested: https://top-immersion.itch.io/crazy-train
This stream is going to be a blast. ๐ https://clips.twitch.tv/ObservantInquisitiveDuckVoteYea
oh
Oops, forgot to put the controls in the description xD time to add it
lol yea i was just guessing
i had a hard time hitting the ufos
like really hard
also, does anyone know in what order Allar is going to play
the games?
alphabetical after requests
oh wow
Whens the next mega jam?
wait how is it alphabetical, if space cat was first
he let people request to play their games
okay so after that its alphabetical?
yeah
im trying to make a guestimate so that i can be live when he plays in case questions arise
only like 25 games in front of me... this might take a whilte
I thought I was free but itch is trying to pull me back in already
Wow I got that same email.
lol
"Hey I know you just finished engaging in an act of self-torture but would you like to do it again?"
My goal for the next game jam I do will be to scope as minimally as I can so that I can practice polishing more
Polish will expand to take as much time as you give it and never be done
this game jam was nice to really challenge myself
I think the scope for the project was a bit too big though but it was a ton of fun
@glass fossil Jamming is like drugs. It's not easy to get off the hook.
@compact cedar definetly lol
Too late to include the fix
i finished LD42 then straight into this one pretty much
gonna get back to learning ue4 c++ for a bit though
@cerulean wren i think epic is fine with the bug fixing, also itch tracking the submissions
i really like bp as well but i want to learn c++ just to have that skill set
spreadsheet for Allar's gamejam playthrough: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xIrRBA3yoRmxdk4R_JXggOxHvPTSj3I2mzuP0t5M2L4/
If there's one jam game that must be played.. Oroville Peak is it (so far!)
very cinematic
that doggo
gotta love him
the art style is great... seeing all those other entries makes me wish i had gone for a more artful style... but hey... it was a fun learning experience
@tawny tide playing yo game now http://twitch.tv/awesomeallar
OMG
lol highscore could get working and i didnt want to stress so i just sent it early
@dusky vessel Does your team actually had a singer?
@somber hazel Yes our music guy decided to do lyrics this time
@south dew playing yo game now
Hope you had fun @pine fulcrum ... first Iโve ever made. Iโll catch it on the VOD after while. Just waking up.
Let me know when you play ours @pine fulcrum Iv only managed to complete it once.. every other time Iv failed ๐
There was a lot of rage quitting during testing
๐คฃ
This game was made for the Unreal Engine 2018 Summer Jam: https://itch.io/jam/2018-summer-ue4jam If you want more, check our Facebook Page https://www.facebo...
who want to give and receive feedback? #ue4jam
@brittle ore best game ive ever seen - programmer's mom ๐
your facebook link is broke
@hidden flicker facebook? I haven't post any facebook link lol
yea you know what it is
on mobile
it shows the facebook link
and on desktop
it doesnt
@brittle ore
also are you brazilian?
yea me 2
i guess it doesnt really matter lol but i figured by your name
im from rio de janeiro, but i live in orlando
Starting my #ue4jam Summer 2018 Marathon (with break for sleep and food ;p), gonna play all the jam submissions in order of submission, come if you want to watch ;3 https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver #UE4 #gamedev
lol, you guys are f'n crazy
i love it though
i'm exhausted after a few days of 10 to 12 hour streams.
Do you plan on sleeping at some point?
you are a machine Allar
@pine fulcrum it was a typo ๐ its supposed to be before the aforementioned farmer ... it was meant to be tricky.. but i guess i just tricked myself in the process
I just won a bunch of awards/honors for the game jam I did last month
Winner, Best Audio
Winner, Best Unreal Engine 4 Game
Runner up, Best 3D Art
Nominated, Best of Jam
Sure @south dew -- https://jfaw-love.itch.io/world-pup
im so jealous of how good people are at making 3d models
i can make cube shaped stuff and thats about it
Return from supper break, continuing adventure thru #Ue4jam summer jam, hop in ^^ https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
Trailer of my submission
Intro for the game, more info: https://xixgames.itch.io/skeleted-that-quickly
Ayyy spooky skelektons
@cerulean wren very creative name xD
haha
my original idea was to create the crowd in houdini and export the animation for the end of the game into unreal
but i ran out of time
Should be continuing plahthroughs in about 2-3 hours
Did you have play through inspired nightmares?
Actually 0 tetris effect
Although I slept for 8 hours, got tea, and then slept again
i'm not surprised!
Afk
Shadowriver found a bug in my game that cripples keyboard users to have amazingly slow elevators :D
Controller 4 life.
I'm in the process of making a hot fix encase anyone wants to play though mine with out the bugs ๐
omg. someone played long enough to deliver 129 passengers.
max speed 1,093,018.75 m/s
that escalates quickly.
Morning y'all! Decided last night (and started) to remake my Hairoomba game from the Jam. Made the decision since i have never really released my own projects and I got some good feedback and suggestions from some of you for how to make it better.
i still hold the highest score in bunny save 2
i dare someone to beat it
i dare someone to play it ๐ ๐ฉ
Here we go yall
doing a game jam did teach me how little time it takes to make a working menu, ive been procrastinating making 1 for my other game, and now its like... DO it
Resuming playthrough stream
Update release for Brave the cave
After Allar play through on his stream, he found some import bugs that needed fixing to able to complete the game.
We decided to release an v1.1 for those who are interested in playing and completing the game which can be found here :
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KUItnBlt69Q4ZYz-uYWI8mtrRjeC96aB
fixes:
ยท a bug with the double jump and crouch causing the character not to move
ยท Collison boxes fixes
@hidden flicker What do you mean? I played it 2 times and I'm 1st ๐
its the number of bunnies you sort X time
when the boss comes though he starts deducting time
so you have to kill him fast
apparently you got the concept from your score
didn't check, but do I lose bunnies if I try to kill him with bunnies?
I think on my 1st playthrough he died to the machine
no, the amount of bunnies you lose doesnt really matter, he just comes in at 50 bunnies lost
lol
that was intentional, 2 ways of killing him
with either bunnies or the machine
yeah, was thinking which way is better
but if you say it doesn't matter... throw bunnies at him!!
hes bugged out though, he doesnt even use a navmesh for pathfinding
yea throwing bunnies while he is stuck is probbably easier
that epic leaderboards plugin is fantastic
just put it in your project, login to their website, generate a key and replace the default key with yours... boom
profit
Resuming #ue4jam gamejam marathon stream, 100 submissions left to play https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver #UE4 #gamejam
Returned from dinner break continuing #ue4jam playthrus
good luck
and godspeed
only like an hour late, as usual
has someone by any chance made a script for downloading all the games ???
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWb44___E10 this keeps popping up in my suggested videos to watch and its messing with me xd
After our jam teams worked tirelessly on over 120 game submissions, we've played them all and announce the winners of the Summer UE4Jam. Find out who won and...
2017 edition ^
Do they record video for the demo reel if you don't submit it with your project?
@carmine kindle Playing yo game now
@hardy thicket No.
From what I've seen it depends on what the creators upload.
If you're one of the winners they will play your game on stream
Resuming my #ue4jam Summer 2018 marathon, 76 games to go https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver #ue4 #gamedev
thank you ๐
Oh that's your submission?
I'll go give it a try out
...well that's not good
๐
Forklift controls feel a bit floaty and difficult to control but otherwise I still think it's a decent small entry
oh yea I just hacked the control together from pawn movement, the steering is velocity based, that's why it doesn't go straight unless you drive backwards
(in essence, acceleration is forward vector rotated by '35' - '-35' degrees based on input, and pawn rotation is based on lookat from RearAxelLocation+Velocity to FrontAxel, making it rear-steered "vehicle")
@uneven basin Hahaha love the clip you posted from Shadowriver's stream. That game was hilarious.
I took a bunch of great clips from Allar's stream. Sooo many great moments.
Oh yeah speaking of Allar here's a clip someone took of our game lol
Lmao I remember that!
Me and my team were just cracking up at his utter confusion in reaction to this
Our art guy wrote and voice acted the dialogue
He was so proud
Lol that constant car suicide
Was the game bugged or was it just because he didn't hold down the movement keys?
I don't remember why, but it was constantly turning left when he first booted up.
Did you see the one with the train that goes up the mountain?
I don't think I did
Hahah yep!
that was my favorite moment on Allars playthrough ๐
lets go, choo choo motherfu... oh f*ck
what an informative and entertaining stream ๐
even if I don't participate next jam, I hope he does it again
That train in the mountain with allar was amazing
Returned from supper ;] hop in for more entries gameplay https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
@copper carbon Hey I just wanted to make certain: Past the deadline it's okay to edit submission and game page info as long it isn't updating the game files itself right?
Noticed a few extra things I wanted to potentially write about in the descriptions
@gaunt copper ratings:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OOwRfa8EE3hGoPxwilkUC7rj2R6Hw9dp54ayjmg5x_A/edit#gid=0
(Nothing Official,)
๐
@brittle ore yeyy we came 39 on your list ๐๐ Thanks
Just realised it wasnt in order. Still nice try, ill take that. Our first jam together
@arctic cradle it's the rating from the Shadow River live stream, it's nothing official
the art of you game seems pretty good btw
Thanks @brittle ore we are both artists with art degrees so as you can imagine the game mechanics were pretty rushed ๐ Fun little project though
@arctic cradle your itch.io youtube link is broken, it goes to the youtube upload page
Live now! Working on remaking the queuing and wave systems from my UE4JAM submission. Drop by to watch a noob continue to struggle with game dev. https://twitch.tv/imjollyroger
Don't want to pump the same link twice in a row. Just signed on for a short, chill, evening stream. Link is the same. Still need two more followers to get to affiliate status!
just finished editing my dev log of the jam
gotta admit i suck at making videos, never been any good at just talking to the air
https://youtu.be/bnBk5SKhRGI here it is!
Music Used: Jordan Maron - Midnight Drive Video link: https://youtu.be/jyro0ptwPcw You can play the game here - https://perlion.itch.io/strandedonmars Lightn...
@glass fossil Your team did a really good job dude -- your game was very similar to mine, Granny's Got Demons!, but yours ended up more polished.
It sounds like your team was 2 Programmers + 3 Artists? Mine was 1 Programmer (me) + 3 Artists + 1 Musician.
Unfortunately, all 3 of my artists were busy for like half of the jam and one of them probably spent more time playing WoW than he did actually contributing. Sucks because I really feel like our thing could've been as polished as yours if the artists had been able to invest as much time as me and the musician had.
Yeah although one of our artists wasn't a 3D artist
It sucks that you didn't get a super good team, I think one of the best parts of a gamejam is when you have this awesome group of talented people all contributing so well
I kind of feel like your team's composition was a bit better, because I put about 46 into it and the UI work probably took just as much time as all of the other programming work tbh.
So maybe for the next jam I'll try to do 2 Programmers + 2 Artists + 1 Musician. I really feel like having a dedicated composer really saved my thing and bumped it up from a "Meh" to a "Nice Try" on @gaunt copper's review score sheet.
I like the formatting of your wave, I would have loved to polish up our wave spawning a bit more before release
In the spring game jam, my team was 2 programmers, 1 artist, and 1 musician and that was a really nice mix
I'd say you would want to stick to 2 max of programmers since when you get more than that things can become a bit unorganized
@glass fossil Great devlog! It's super nice to see people explain behind the scenes things like that.
That really reminds me that for the future I should keep a closer mental track of what happens during the jam itself so that next time I could also afterwards make some sort of diary for people who are interested in the development process.
Your game also looks really cool and well polished from the devlog video so I'll definitely give it a shot later on!
Thanks! What I do is keep a folder where at the end of each day I write in a notepad and take some clips
Pretty helpful and itโs fun to look back on
Oh and as another unrelated question
@glass fossil How did you submit the game with it listing all of the related collaborators like that?
I've never figured out how to do it with any others besides the name of the person who uploaded and submitted the game
Itโs in the settings tab on your page
Iโll send you a more detailed answer tomorrow if you canโt find it
Is it the "Admins" tab under the editing of the game page?
Yep
Ah okay, I didn't know that using that would have that sort of effect. Thanks!
@glass fossil i really like your game, i know i did say something about it being good for mobile but on PC as well... do you plan on furthering the development?... i liked the open mars scenario more than the interior of the building, but thats just how i like games...
im with @dusky vessel we got a 5 man team, but not all 5 contributed and even the ones that did mostly left the work for us to implement into the engine ... but whatever you live and learn... this was my first game jam as well
yeah the interior section of it was a kind of rushed tutoriala section
im kind of busy atm but i think some of our other members want to continue it
thats cool
yea now im back to real life, got a project im trying to make money with so, back to reality...
if we were to continue it then we would go on a kind of subnautica gameplay route
how so
resource gathering, base building, temples to visit
tahts interesting with a tower defense game
we'd swap up the spawning to happen kind of randomly and give the player a small weapon
so that they can build defensess for their base
theres definitely a lot of ways you could go with it...
im pretty busy atm thought with trying to learn C++, my senior year starting, and working on college applications so im not sure how much time i can put into it atm
@brittle ore thanks for doing the sheet
Hey guys, how strict are the rules on the gamejam? I mean things like banning epic content (vehicles, mannequin, default texture)?
not sure if anything changed, but it used to lenient. You basically have to transform the content to be unique and not just the starter templates
you can use everything though
When do they show the winners of summer? Or did i miss that
I think it's happening on their live stream next tuesday.
@oblique cairn - They allow Market Place content, and Starter Content, but the ones that receive the best praise are the ones who make their own content, even if it looks worse than the starter content. And they are more strict about gameplay, if your game is strictly the template gameplay without innovation the game doesn't really meet qualifications
just dont do a game with bunnies getting crushed in a grinder
was it that bad?
well apparently, animal cruelty is not allowed, although that really depends on who is playing the game(the game is about saving bunnies from being mutilated, althought the "funny" part of it is the particularly the gore)... Epic Games does not want to be associated with anything controversial, and I respect their decision, so far no one has really said anything official, but they also haven't said anything official so... we'll see, or not see in that case
im still mad though, at somebody... but i dont really know who... maybe i should just throw some bunnies around now (in our game of course, not like, actual bunnies)
ok that's a fair point
running over animals in gta isn't considered animal cruelty
animal surgeon simulator probably would
forcing animals to fight eachother through unnatural means, definitely
Only two weeks after the Summer Jam me and my friends are at it again. This time we joined the Game Maker Toolkit 2018 Jam and made this in 48 hours!
Can I make a game with someone? I wanna have some office fun and looking to get some folio if anyone is down for the same thing ๐
hey
@brittle ore I want to say that I've heard it'll be on a thursday livestream
started translating my jam game (Neuron Elevator Co) to mobile ๐ if you thought qwop-evator was bad, wait until touch-qwop-evator
@minor hemlock I know the playthrough will be on the semptember 13, but I guess they release the result before
I don't know, it was not mentioned in the rules
yeah....
@brittle ore yo man! Iโm an artist.
One of the UE4 forum people said that there's no timeline for announcing the results of the game jam
Updating your game is possible again!
So on the jam page it says September 13th if I remember correctly but from my experience in the spring jam Iโd say there isnโt a fixed date for the winners announcement
@mint sinew what is ATX?
whats the situation with the summer game jam? where are the results?
@burnt rose The jam page seems to imply that the results will be announced on the 13th.
it means Austin Texas.
20180911.jpg
WHAT
The Summer #ue4jam results are in! Join us this Thursday to see what games we thought escalated the quickest and had that extra level of charm
Game Jam Results on Sep 20th
Originally was going to be 13th (Which is today) but was postponed due to Hurricane Florence
I'm hoping for an honorable mention again like we did last time. Our project unfortunately wasn't polished enough gameplay wise due to the time constraints but I think that the music and art assets keep it afloat as a decent entry
I'm really hoping we get some sort of mention or possibly even win
Our game is a bit buggy though so that might hold it back a bit
@supple sierra which is your game?
We made "Sky Rail Pirates"
Another one I have my eye on is "Stranded on Mars"
I also personally really like "POSTMAN: DELIVERANCE"
It fits the theme perfectly and is a joy to watch unfold
Can't remmeber too many others, it's been a while so most of the games have already slipped out of my memory
Doesn't help that I only just got out of another game jam a week ago and was busy talking with the other jammers about the list of games from that one lol
but you listed the best I guess
@supple sierra you had an awesome and super original concept to your game, I loved it
I made that skeleted quickly, did you like it?
@glass fossil Really happy you think so! ๐
hey yall
Does anyone remember the platformer I fucking hated
I can't find it on itch anymore
was it removed?
The two characters, one could swing and the other had wings
nevermind
@pine fulcrum entwined
@pine fulcrum did you like my gamejam (that skeleted quickly) game?
@cerulean wren I liked your game, specially the name xD
haha thanks @brittle ore
Aye we got a jam coming up in just a couple days if anyone's looking to join! We have prizes ๐
https://itch.io/jam/t-shirt-jam
@glass fossil You could make a shirt for the UE4 Jam Finalists too -
why would we make a shirt for ourselves ๐
haha just kiddin
but nah tshirt jam exclusive
yall ready for the winner stream tomorrow
Best of luck to everyone!
๐

๐ฅ
Awww yeah baby
Staying up to 2 AM specifically for this
AHHH
Yay they're going to be on time
Streams up!
@glass fossil there's your game on the reel ๐ฎ
@uneven basin Your game is one of the finalists!
๐
Congratulations to the winners! There were some really awesome games
๐
That was all kinds of awesome
Congrats to all the winners!
congratulations
Congratulations! Always a little disappointing when you lose but I hope all of us will do better next time!
No worries Allar
Thanks for playing our game (Sky Rail Pirates) ๐
And of course to everyone else who has!
No win for us this time but we'll come back stronger and better for the next round!
And also I think everybody who participates in a game jam should make a list of everything they've learned from the jam after it's done.
Because that can be valuable for any situation, not just a jam.
Congratulations to the winners and all finalists! Enjoy the awesome prices :)
My "FPS Game Starter Kit" being one of them XD have fun!
@pine fulcrum @copper carbon Thank you guys for the "honorable mention" by using our game jam entry to play out the show at the end!
I'm sure it doesn't count as a real honorable mention like last time with Firesaurus Rex, but I'll take what I can get!
Hey guys, sorry to shamelessly plug. I'm the composer from Granny's Got Demons! that got featured at the end of the UE jam show. Just postin' ma tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYZ-olsLy4I
The Menu Loop for the Unreal Summer Jam entry "Granny's Got Demons!". Play it for free here!: https://jfaw-love.itch.io/granny All parts written and recorded...
@dusky vessel - ha! Happy to do it
Just wanted everyone else to have it stuck in their head ๐
It was great
whoaaaaaAAA this side up snagged a finalist spot! yeehaw
Glad everyone liked our game we worked super hard on it ^^
I learned a ton about AI programming this jam, thatโs what originally got me wanting to learn unreal so Iโm excited to explore more of it
wow. they didnt even mention my game :/ i feel like i wasted 3days of my life
Same here, but it's a learning experience. Take what you can from it and push through. If you didn't have fun doing it, then maybe game jams aren't your cup of tea
I really think these jams could benefit from specific feedback. Right now we only get snippets from the various marathon streamers but complete silence in the judging process unless you get a win or mention. Transparency is so very important!
If not a score, even a few simple words as to how your game was received (or discounted due to technical issues, content etc) would go a long way.
to be fair, only streamers have been providing feedback since the start
..sometimes
Also if it helps, it took me about 7 game jams before I started getting honorable mentions, or other awards/recognitions for my entries
If I were starting over in hindsight, I'd follow a particular game jam (e.g. the official UE4 ones) for a few times in a row and then look at all of the winners/finalists/honorable mentions for each of them. That way, you can have a good idea of where the bar is at right now in terms of quality/fun/etc that the judges are looking for.
and even then you might get stomped by pro-team passing by
like that whale-rail-shooter
or the pirate game
Thing is, there are often 100+ entries,so providing individual feedback isn't all that realistic
The streamers are the best feedback normally, which is something most other online jams don't jave
*have
It's a serious pain in the ass to stream em all too, without doing the 5 minute fly by of each game
Best way to get noticed is to be immediately interesting and have a low entry skill requirement
If level 1 is too hard, judges are definitely not getting to level 2
I would imagine next big jam is sometime next year
megajam will likely be in October / November
it'd be nice to just have an off the cuff rating "Unplayable" "Needs polish" "Wtf?" "Winner"
Hmm? Is the judging done? I don't see results on the itch page, and the twitch video above seems down?
results are on the blog page
thanks @uneven basin - page is https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/the-2018-summer-ue4jam-results-are-in incase anyone hasn't spotted it
Out of curiosity, have any of the finalists/category winners been contacted about software/swag winnings?
I don't mean to sound impatient - I'm just worried there could have been a mix-up, because the forum post links to the wrong place for our game (it points to someone's spring jam submission).
someone please @ me if you can find me the name of the person who made that sky spline surfing game
for the game jam
im having some spline issues im hoping they can help me with
found him
@ember fossil nothing yet, but Amanda has been travelling for the past week, which might explain it
also epic got hit with hurricane florence
Understandable, thanks!
We just finished our JimJam 48 hour jam! Check it out here! https://diligentgames.itch.io/ouroboros-ring
a game like catastronauts would be a great game jam idea
Made with unreal engine for a jam with the theme "Fairy tales"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIAEEXN1RG8
This game was made in 3 days for the game jam event: GDL Game Jam September edition. You can download and play it for free: https://luizfernando.itch.io/redhood
we had a dope first jam last month so we're doing another! get a free shirt with a cool design at our jam!

Mega jam is announced!
Woo hoo! Can't wait for this year's Epic MegaJam.
I don't think I can compete this year ๐ฆ
It's happening right after I submit the rest of my college applications so I'll hopefully have a lot of freetime
College sucks gl
So where do we look for people who wants to team up for the megajam?
https://forums.unrealengine.com/unreal-engine/events/1540271-2018-epic-megajam-thread-november-8-15
It says you can use this thread to find a team.
TW_EpicMegaJam_Promo_181016.jpg
The 2018 Epic MegaJam, our biggest #ue4jam of the year, is coming right up! This is a fantastic opportunity for you to have
You can also use Crowdforge - https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam
Looking for team members for the upcoming jam, 4 positions are open. Looking for modellers, animator, sound fx, blueprinters and/or one-man-armies. Game idea is already present.
"Game idea is already present"
ehhhh
Are we allowed to come up with our game idea before the jam? That sounds like it could be counted as pre-made.
the whole point is to make a game around a theme that you're given at the beginning of the jam
so having the idea beforehand is kind of missing the point entirely
and usually leads to poor results anyway
well nobody is stopping you from scribbling ideas up front
but will it fit the theme? very unlikely
The fact that it's in November makes me guess it's not about Halloween and spooktober
Finally I can stop making spooky games lol
the best ones are where they use common phrases and expressions that can be interpreted in a variety of different ways
But they only really accept games that use their preferred interpretation.
Ideas can be adjusted, norhing wrong with a strategy
Like, choosing a New Project template (top down, fps, tps, race, vr)
Why limit yourself more than required?
in the end it is about having fun, learning stuff and creating something you can be proud of
everything else is secondary
unless you are cheating, of course
Thats the idea
Nobody likes cheaters
Even if you premake assets, you can disclose them
And if the idea doesn't fit at all, well.. there is a month to come up with a different one
"they only really accept games that use their preferred interpretation." - I mean, that's totally untrue
there's a preference for games that fit the theme well, it's part of the scoring criteria
so, so long as it clearly fits the theme in one interpretation or another, it's fine
if you take some game and tangentially shove in something to try and theme it, it shows
as such it scores low on that criteria
Well I might just be a little bitter but it seemed like last game jam the winners all had their difficulty escalate to ridiculous levels and were basically impossible to beat.
Does anyone else decide if they want to jam based on the theme? A lot of the themes have been discouraging for me personally, like I get excited about the jam and then find out the theme and i'm like nyeeehhh
those are my thoughts too, but it doesnt feel right forcing yourself to do such a thing, i think it would show in what you produce
Looking for VFX and SFX artists for the Epic Jam:
https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam/teams/2473/dashboard
I love seeing my game on the background of the megajam poster ๐๐ค still trying to decide if ill take part in it this season, the summer jam was great
hi how are u
Seeking for more members, positions all open apart from design.
https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam/teams/2478
@rigid fog ๐๐ the temptation is real!
I am keen to join but i'll need to find a team that doesn't mind someone somewhat amataur.
You mind joining an amateur team as an amateur?
Hey guys! My team is looking for 2 more people to join us for the upcoming Epic MegaJam on November 8th! We're just a couple full stack web developers and a graphic designer who know eachother IRL, have been learning UE4 and want to get into our first game jam together.
Right now we're looking for:
- A general 3d artist that can do 3d models and animations (probably in a low poly style)
Don't worry about needing game jam experience. This is our first time too so feel free to apply to our team at the link below if you're interested! We're just all trying to have fun.
https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam/teams/2481
Feel free to PM me in discord as well if you'd prefer. I'm on 24/7
I did not realize the megajam is so soon
They will be streaming playthroughs in December for the 3 finalist teams yes
Is there a good place to try and arrange teams? I'd love to participate in this
@waxen trout the crowdforge is usually a good place to start: https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam/
Thanks Heff
Hey guys! Weโve got a team of 4 (2 programmers and 2 3D artists) and weโre looking for a sound designer! If you want to join our team just shoot me a message
That is a good question ยจ
afaik it is, you get the full indie license which you can use for commercial games
at least it used to be the indie license, now it just says "Houdini License"
it's a limited commercial license they give out for jams
Does anyone else do something special like this after finishing a jam?
I got a 3D model of my character from the Spring Jam to remember it since it was my first big game jam and I figured Iโd make a tradition out of it
cool
My printer isn't good enough to commit to prints
i should just get a new one entirely
What is Houdini actually used for?
My asset pipeline already has photoshop and blendet
I think it's best use for UE4 is procedural modeling
like mudbox?
My modular building tool made in Houdini for export to Unreal 4 World Building Project Check out the project's cinematic trailer: vimeo.com/134828068 And the...
Something like this
o neat
Houdini is like crack. You start off thinking you'll go in and make a fire effect, then you start messing with procedural modeling, one year later you are knee deep in cloth simulations wondering why you used other programs
I havenโt gotten enough time to experiment with Houdini yet but it seems really interesting
Learning the best practices for C++ and blueprint have kept me busy for the past 10 months
@glass fossil Where are you learning those best practices from?
Also @copper carbon have you seen my e-mail? It has been a few months since my team won that Awful Game Jam. You said that you were going to send a bag of stuff but I haven't seen anything. I've e-mailed you about it a few times over the past few months but I think you might have missed them.
@dusky vessel I can link you the specifics if you want them but; blueprints i've been learning from the UE4 live training and other youtube tutorials. They're fairly intuative so mainly just experimenting with them has been the biggest help for me. As for C++, I took Ben Tristems beginner course on udemy and I'm currently reading C++ primer to get a good understanding of the basic concepts behind C++ since I don't have much experience in languages other than blueprints
C++ Primer is 1400 pages in my book app on my phone, so its a bit tough to churn through but I'm hoping that by the end of it I'll be able to comfortable write code
houdini was pretty fun to use but unfortunately my progress was blocked with learning license and non-indie license in unreal clashing prevent imports. Tried messagin Ben Mears for my license we won last years mega jam. Still waiting for a reply :/ Yearnin to learn man >.<
When is the next UE4 jam
@sterile brook next week
Really
Can anybody join with me in the next week jam. I will act as a 3D Modeller
Anybody interested
Unlikely to get quick answers for that in here, I would check the crowdforge for teams: https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam
Thanks brother you helped me a lot @zenith gust
Haven't decided if I am going solo for this or not.
But if there's anyone looking for an experienced programmer for Mega Jam. PM me with your current team composition. This will be my 4th MegaJam, and probably something like 10th (or more) UE4 GameJam overall.
@sterile brook I could possibly help. I stink at 3D Modeling but I'm pretty good at programming. Only problem is I kinda couldn't do it unless there was something in it for me for certain. Between college and work it's hard to find time for something that might not give me anything.
I wonder what a game jam would be like where you could have a team of 20-30 people
I feel like thatโd be super hectic but also a ton of fun
Touchรฉ
game jam implying it's a very very limited scope and timespan though ๐
I wonder if you could even get 20-30 people organized in 5 days ๐ค
I think the best approach would be to split everyone up and then have group leaders
Every production is very limited scope and timespan
That happens to get out of scope quickly
And dredge on
Anyway, I was being a bit facetious
I think anything over 10 would be a disaster
5 seems like the right number most times. Until you realize, damn, I could have used another (this)
Yeah, working with a small group is pretty nice since changes are easy to make
Hey all, any VFX artist looking to jam some fractal niagara ribbon shader hlsl spline panner stuff we'd love to have you join our team: https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam/teams/2473
cant wait
Anyone doing the megajam in the coming weeks looking for a 3d artist? I'm pretty quick at making 3d stuff and can do stylized and pbr artstyles
have any samples of your work?
anyone attending the epic mega jam received their perforce access? its getting close to the date and its making me anxious since i need to hook the rest of my team up on how to use it :/
@minor hemlock https://www.artstation.com/mohsena
If you go on the team fortress 2 items you can check out my steam workshop stuff as well, tons more stuff there
Haven't updated my artstation for a long while tbh
Looking for artists and a programmer to work for our team in a game jam PM for details
If anyone wants a vfx artist I'd love to help! My artstation: https://grandbuilder.artstation.com/
programmer with plenty of experience looking for a decent team. Here are some the jam games I worked on: https://dennyrocket.itch.io/
uuu denny is back in the game o.0
guys
theres an epic
mega jam
going to happen
yes
i just found out
im great with news
i used to get emails about this stuff
Someone hide the bunnies ๐
I want to participate in this mega jam but I feel discouraged because of my recent success not having lead to any job opportunities
Hey guys, quick question. How does joining the jam work? Does every team member have to create an itch.io account and click join? Where do we build/sign up the team? Or is the only relevent thing listing the team members when one person submits the entry?
@cerulean geode Submissions is the only thing that ultimately matters yes
As long as you follow the "How to submit an entry" points you are good
(and the rules & requirements ofc)
Ok, thanks!
I'm looking for an artist to partner up with myself (I'm primarily a programmer). Here's my jam entry from the summer, but I'd like to wean myself off of premade assets ๐ https://partlyatomic.itch.io/neuron-elevator-co
@minor hemlock lol
im going to be travelling
precisely on those dates
so i'll probably have to go it alone this time
The game jam page doesnt have a link to the official rules page
Which i completely missed last time as it was a separate page
"Detailed rules will be available at the start of the jam."
As they might change from one jam to another
I may hit you up on the next one @minor hemlock
This one is going to be rough on time.
I've got plans over the weekend and then have a friend flying in to town for 3 weeks starting monday. So i'm going to be offline.
oof, not going to participate this jam?
Probably not more than trying out some mechanics for my next project.
I would say submit a template project, but I'm pretty sure that's literally in the rules
Hahaha, it's not worth it to submit anything i don't feel like i put 100% into.
The winter game jam though i think i'll try to take time off of work again.
Hey does anyone know where to find the documentation on using intel light sync?
I don't really know much about it, but with a little googling I found this: https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/innovation/lightsync-rgb.html I don't know if anything on this page will be helpful I haven't finished looking at it. Tell me if you find anything better.
https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/logitechg-sdk-plugin There's also this, seems a bit more up to date
we should all get a logitech keyboard and code some stupid stuff on those for the jam ๐
Calling for an onsite gamejam at Epics HQ
o is this why Logitech are sponsering?
Yeah they want to see their software incoperated into a game
I suck at C++ so adding it to a project I've got currently is a bit challenging, I'm going to see if I can figure it out before the jam though
roflsauce
Awesome Cats are a looking for some modeling artists for megajam, DM if you interested ;]
557 now... thanks for reminding me oyu need to join first ;p
๐
I doubt there's 556 teams, most likely individuals not knowing signed up along with other teammates
yea
Cause... if there's really even close to that amount...
I doubt there would be enough time to review each game
Yeah, that does complicate things a bit. No way to see teams on itch.
At least in any timely manner
in first jam then itch.io was introduced we joined entire team because we didn't know how this gonna play out as i never used it
I'm surprised Itch doesn't do "team signups" for jams by now
Or surprised maybe no one has bothered asking
So they might not even know
That would be a nice feature. It'd be better than using CrowdForge, I think.
(that it should be a thing)
Would be nice to have it in the same place instead of using a separate service.
Iโve got a UE4 Branded pen and I love that thing
List of things I got from Epic:
- a glass of water ๐
Are there many mobile games submitted for game jams?
I think I saw like 10 last time
So yeah, if you are aiming to win, this is the best way
Only if that is a special category.
I guess I was thinking it would be a disadvantage for some reason
my team is leaning toward mobile game, but waiting for theme, so thats why im pondering it
true, I don't see any mentions on special category ๐ค
Yeah, I've been wondering if they plan on telling us, or if we are just going to be flying blind
@vapid thistle I got the Logitech thing working, let me know if you need any help with it!
Is there a list somewhere with the themes for all the previous official ue4 game jams? I don't even know how many gamejams there have been in the past couple of years. I can't seem to find any concise info about this on google.
There's this forum post, but it doesn't seem to be up to date: https://forums.unrealengine.com/community/general-discussion/72280-game-jam-hall-of-fame

where do i find info about the intel lightsync implementation?
it doesnt mention on the page or im blind
this is the game jam channel...
well it is on game jam page ๐
ooh time to upgrade to 4.21 before the jam
@glass fossil DM me and later today when Iโm done with school Iโll make a video showing how to set it up
Itโs a pretty simple install just takes some trial and error
25 hours left for the game jam!!!
Should be an exciting one!
Yay
Alright I wont be travelling
Any teams need a generalist ? A do-aller
Not to be confused with Do-Allar
Lmao
Allar permeates this community. And damn it I don't have an Allar emoji.
Btw, I'll be on the stream tomorrow with Amanda and Tim. ๐
Remotely, of course.
Oh cool looking forward to it!
#noanimalcrueltyguys
A lot of people don't know how to get the most out of it, so hopefully people will find it helpful. ๐
@civic dock gotta tell people to submit earrrrrrrrrly early earrrrrrrrrrrrrly
in fact that should be the theme for this jam "Submit early!"
Yeah, and test their build process early!
Nah, last 10 minutes for that adrenaline rush
Itch has tools that make publishing updates and testing them a breeze.
theme is interstellar felines?
Are there any gamejams comming up somewhere soon, could be a short one or a long one, essentially i just want to have a theme for a project.
Doesn't have to be epics official jams.
Thereโs the mega jam starting tomorrow and then theres this list of all of them https://itch.io/jams
Has anyone been able use the GameTextures code
looking for people who will actively participate
AwesomeCats also still looking for 2 more people, especially 3D artist
If anyone needs help adding Lightsync feel free to send me a DM! I made a tutorial on it that I can link you
It's pretty easy to implement
Submissions open from Tomorrow at 3:00 PM
but the livestream starts at 2pm right?
2pm eastern u.s. time
Yes.
got a 30 minute wonder you're going to work up?
Looking for a team to join
I am a texture artist / 3d artist / animator / and environmental artist all rolled into one ๐
if you want to be a duo, I'm open o/ (as a programmer)
eh, was hoping for a team ๐ but ill keep ya in mind just in case no teams are open ๐
just two would be super hard ๐ฆ
nods certainly can be
with a team though, i just worry about art ๐ and other people do the rest
thats how I like it :0
well, at least for this time. My team (normal) is busy and cant do this Jam, so im looking to join up and just hammer out art
we have one open spot, not sure if we need an additional artist though
what do you do?
we already have an character artist
do you have a portfolio or something to show? ๐
This is a game mode we made for the UE4 Winter Jam. Check it out and let us know what you think! Download the game at: https://riuthamus.itch.io/cracked-ice ...
was my submission last year ๐
all art was done in the time period of the Jam and we did not borrow any assets
This is a short video explaining basic gameplay of Valley of Crescent Mountain. Music by: DaviKosi https://soundcloud.com/davikosi Social Links: http://www.i...
is also some of my older art (1 year ago)
I like the style
seems to be pretty close to what yaki does
gimme a sec to check with the team
I am a "full stack" artist ๐
I animate, texture, rig, skin weight, and model
TurnipTop has upgraded HP bars, dmg indicators, and gets some nice camera shake on hit. Mogu has updated animations and a new flip! Tomorrow, combo actions! #gamedev #gameart #screenshotsaturday #twitchgame #ue4 #UnrealEngine #indiedev https://t.co/XnZwRM55lL
and that is a more recent link to a character/animation
looking good
keep in mind the trees are "placeholder"
can I invite you to the our channel, we can talk a bit more and you can see if it fits for you
@partly and @tulip viper erm.. i know of a certain team thats still open, i myself am a generalist
@minor hemlock
i think i just got picked up @hidden flicker sorry ๐ thanks though
thanks ๐
@hidden flicker sure! Hit me up tomorrow and we can brainstorm ideas post-stream. If we can agree on an ๐ idea I'm all for it. Save the animals though
yeah i saw you want to keep it small
ive set up a team page
1 person has joined already
i'd prefer to have as many people on board, at least an artist and a sound person, it can get overwhelming with few people
i mean, unless its all pre-made assets, then thats fine just coders but if you want to make it original...
up to you man
its open
for the taking
What's the makeup of the team right now? Both coders?
๐
Used premade assets for most graphical assets though ;)
still though
thats us
i guess the link just points to the
the mega jam page
Is this supposed to say Logitech LightSync challenge?
I have a question for the Epic megaJam, Do I need to create a Team on Crowdforge even if I already have a team ?
dx racer raffle? Im in!
@astral quail not required, only the team that you write to submission form is important
@uneven basin, I'm not sure to know were can I sign in for the submission
Do you have the link ?
I mean, when your team submits the game to the jam
you gotta fill out a form with team member names and contact details
check "HOW TO SUBMIT AN ENTRY AND TIMELINE"
Right ok, I wasn't sure about the submission system, thank you and sorry for this stupid question
Easy to get a bit worried about missing mandatory steps ^^
@glass fossil is it the "Logitech Gaming LED SDK"?
did anyone get a response from epic for perforce access for the megajam already?
yah we did
my team sent them mail yesterday, was that too late already or should I be a bit more patient?
not sure, we gave ours in advance
alrighty then, imma cross my fingers
@minor hemlock thatโs the one
Hereโs the special categories for this jam
im only going for one man army
because i cant do anything lese ๐
best tactic : make a vr android game as solo
wait a second
what if you get all 3 the best?
do you get 3x of those prizes? ๐
when you get all three you'll also win all raffles
I can't remember if I've ever seen anyone win both special cats AND finalists and/or win more than one category
I think they do this to be "fair" and allow more people to win
Not sure, @copper carbon @safe island would know this answer.
If for whatever reason you did, sure
I think it is deliberately spread out where possible, so I believe nobody has ever won more than one prize per jam?
Nah, I think someone would have noticed that
I mean, looking at last year for example
Solo Dev won Finalist
Why wouldn't he have won Army of One as well?
To me, makes total sense that he should have won both
in theory it would be possible to win two categories if you were the only entrant in both
"special cats" theme confirmed
but that's never happened, I think xD
I like the special categories though, I usually try to hit as many of them as possible ๐
under 100Mb is my favourite
That's a fun one.
AR / Mobile categories are a bit meh
under 100Mb actually requires some additional effort and creativity on the part of the developer
Yeah, definitely.
It's not super easy.
Last time I made a project with just the first person template and added nothing else, packaged it comes out to ~500MB.
whu, I don't think any of my projects have crossed the 300mb threshold yet o.o
None of my previous game jam games are anywhere near 500MB.
Was pretty shocked by the size.
It was a test project for a blog post I'm writing. Half a gig for a packaged version of the first person template doesn't seem right to me.
about the size, is there a tutorial how to publish it correctly ? i also have same issue but i think is because the console is enabled
i think 2d projects have a good chance at being <100mb
and me getting 2000 fps in them like i did once lol
@civic dock even with the "package only used items" ? or just a completely fresh project and immediately hit package
my mind is boggled, I'm gonna have to go see what the FPS project includes!
The 500MB was a completely fresh first person template project. Create project > Open > Package.
wait it packages things that you dont use too?
Tried it with 4.20 and 4.21.
Do it soon if you want to use 4.21 for the game jam. ๐
@glass fossil I think the setting is "Cook only maps" to only package used items
if i dont have it enabled then if i have my custom sky and the default one i dont use, will it package the default sky too? (example)
I believe so
oof
you also have to supply the list of maps that it digs for references from
Disabling unused plugins might help, but then you need to make sure your packaging tool chain is set up for recompilation.
is there a way to permanetly disable plugins btw? so i dont have to do it for each project
Not that I know of. ๐
I'm not sure how much that helps, but worth trying if you're certain you aren't using any editor content.
well only thing i have ever used was tiling noise and white texture
gonna have to find those somewhere then
well, "find"
how does that interact with cook only maps? if it finds a reference in the editor content will it go ahead and package that.. hmm
half downloaded of 4.21
If you don't go through and edit a lot of the default engine content, at the moment a project will probably get close to 100Mb as it is
there's some really stupid stuff in there :/
IIRC there's a 4k blur kernel texture or something
madness
Yeah, I don't think you can get anywhere near 100MB without editing a bunch of settings and such.
@glass fossil - Do you have a link to your tutorial for LIGHTSYNC? I'd be happy to share that with others.
And yes, it was supposed to be Logitech...
You all ready for the jam?!?!
Got any questions? Leave a comment and I'll see if I can help out! Links: Logitech Gaming Software: https://support.logitech.com/en_us/software/lgs Logitech ...
I assume that's what your game is going to look like.
Thanks @minor hemlock
Hmm, not a bad idea
๐
@glass fossil nj on that tut.
yes im ready!
hmm
but i will be able to start only like 15 hours later ๐ฆ
I don't have anything for lightsync ๐ญ
they have an emulator apparently
because sleep and school
such a variety of devices ๐ rgb.. rgb per key.. rgb zones... 3-level zones... and on adn on
here's the list of compatible gear if any was curious
that's just their premium stuff, there's a longer list of supported gear
