Can someone explain the rules for the assets used? It said nothing premade?
Submission may include sourced (non-original) assets, but the sourced assets must be noted.Submission must not include assets created prior to the Contest period (outside of noted sourced assets). All art assets in Submission must have a material other than the default applied to it.
If you use something pre-made you have to say so in the submission form. It's fine to use marketplace assets or even stuff you made yourself if you make sure to mention which things were not done during the jam.

Either WASD and Arrow Keys, or the joysticks on your controller.
Later there will be windows that try to crush your fingers and people trying to throw flower pots on your head.
Also later you won't be able to grab places that aren't windows, like the brick parts and the empty parts.

This jam was the first time I got an idea on the first day, mainly because I got good advice.

here's another way to think of it if it helps you, find a tangent and keep refining it
for example mine was:
Hurr durr, escalators!
How about a game about an elevator?
How about a game where you ARE the elevator?
How about a game where you have to deliver passengers to earn your freedom from this prison of an elevator?
note that I was able to start prototyping by the second idea and it didn't invalidate any further refinements
have been thinking about an elevator also

I spent my time modelling an elevator to keep thinking on it
I really wish someone could get the rights to stairway to heaven for this jam, but I'm not gonna bank on it ๐ฆ
but maybe you find it easier to start with mechanics before implementing something concrete? the theme could be taken to mean difficulty and/or power level escalates quickly..

I'll have to experiment with it a lot, it might not be a bad thing if the best way of getting kills is by elevating up to a ship, bailing out and shooting all the others. Also 1 thing that I kind of want to have is having to memorize which ships have stolen many cows and which contain nothing. A problem I will most likely run into is it's just impossible to keep track of so many things, especially as you need to control the aim and the player at the same time at different positions. Not sure how to tackle that

Pretty good, thinking about starting

spent a solid 10 minutes trying to make a popping noise with my mouth and finger today

actually it was pretty fun because i made a neat radial menu for an emote system

it's a mix of tower defense and black ops 2 zombies

anyways theres the shop to buy turrets and defenses in, so in order to add more special things to it I threw in an emote system that you can buy throughout the game
The one biggest flaw with tower defense game jams is a lot of game jam entries don't give you a clear ui or any instructions
I spent 6 hours futzing with physics ... "Today I get the gameplay done!" ha. ha.
i actually had an idea for that to create a quick tutorial at the start of the game to explain stuff

Moving offices this weekend, but having a morning of talking with some coworkers while moving instead of just programming all day really helped get some fresh ideas and a better idea of what still to do/how to do it
Update! I spent most of the day working on the art assets (barn, grass, trees) and also fixing and redoing the code
I made the shotgun 1 shot UFOs close range and deal no damage from further back, I'm afraid otherwise it would become too cluttered. I tried adding health bars but yeah I didn't like it

Now that I'm thinking about it I could make it possible to grab (attach) yourself into UFOs also, right now you can only grab into cows

@compact cedar Are they actual sphere meshes merging together through code, or a shader effect? I've done that kinda effect before through shader, but had trouble with getting it to work right in 3D (eg one of the balls moves behind another object in my world, it'd render through it)

Ooh nice! I used mine in a leap motion application, with the balls on your hands and they'd interact with other metaballs in the world
For depth I ended up just using different spheres slightly larger than the shader-drawn metaballs, so they'd have enough space around the balls to render them blending together, but I moved the meshes at the same time as I moved the shader metaball. Worked surprisingly well, might be easier than adding in depth filtering into the shader (not sure about performance though) @compact cedar
it's midnight here in EU and my search for chicken sounds on Soundly took a really dark twist, I feel unsettled now

@dusky vessel Nah, I wasn't lying. This is my 1st sculpt ever. If you can throw enough time into a sculpt, everyone can do this (I even started with a sphere and actually changed to using my mouse half way).

the cameras in the character component sometimes dont rotate visually (after rotating them) and you have to close the character and re-open them to see the change
that bug has been around forever

I think the scale of escalation is correct
Player score went from 350 to -30100 in <10seconds
trying to decide if I want to give in and submit now... or slack off pretending to polish and submit later
I feel like the projct is coming together for my thing, but I'm really fatigued from all of the programming work. I've put in 35 hours so far according to my hourly spreadsheet thing.
@wise apex hm, you only get one chance at submitting, but that doesn't mean you can't upload a few revisions to itch, right?
Not real sure exactly how to best do that, now that you mention it.
In the past jams, you've been able to edit submissions before the deadline - not entirely sure how it'd work now.
@minor hemlock I've done game jams on the site before -- you can submit only once, but you can indeed replace the download link as many times as you want until the deadline

Hey guys. I was trying to follow along on a few games and see the process. Sadly I didn't get to witness much. I did have a question about launch builds. Once you have the game to a state at which you are ready to package have you guys run into a ton of bugs (new features)? Is that pretty common?
sometimes packaged builds dont do the same as PIE
gotta do quick build test, then off to bed
still need music tho ๐ค
and perhaps better sfx
current ones feel kinda meh
so far found only one bug in build, one mesh it not showing up ๐ค

Yes you do have to make it public in order to submit. You can still replace the download link all you want until the deadline, though

Was doing VR in general a major pain for you as well?
It was a massive pain
SteamVR probably bluescreened my PC 10 or so times during the jam, because I was plugging it in or out at the wrong time.
I think I need a standing desk
I kept losing my controllers, then having to shut down unreal so that steam could find them again
I can't say I ever had any issues with SteamVR, but I was using a Vive with a decently spaced setup
initial setup was a pain, but that was just once, and that was before the Vive had a commercial release, so I'll give it a little leeway there
I like both? 1 as a dust storm and 2 as clear skies ๐
#1 gives more feeling that you have boundaries and can get lost if you wander too far

oooh there was a noticeable delay before hitting the submit button works again
you can see a new area that chose your last uploaded game in default
been checking for 10 minutes and now it gives me a different window
oh I am, I had broken class reference, been fixing it all morning
cast node just outright refused to work even tho debug showed there are no other objects around it
I've seen something similar. cast to shows two identical classes, one is real, one is phantom

And that story involves the player better than any other medium

you hit the submit first time, it asks you to upload
then once you're done with uploading and filling out the details, hit the submit button again and it gives you the form to fill with team and contact details

I find it easier to think of it as having to publish a game on itch.io first, like any other game you'd want to put up there, not related to any jams. And then once that's done you submit your project on the jam page and fill out the forms.

single actor reference was broken

I had collision on my main mesh decide it wasn't gonna collide anymore
at some point unreal had just deleted it off the static mesh and wouldn't let me change it anymore ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
usually if something like that happens, fastest fix is to duplicate the class, delete the old one and replace references
I restarted the editor and it was back to normal even after my attempted fixes, so yay!
its okay i had a mare for an hour... i put a mesh in but forgot to remove the collision which broke my climb system... i spent an hour trying to figure it out... felt like a dumb sod when i put the collision viewer on

im still doing polishing, its amazing how much i like suffering
