1st one was kinda off theme
and 2nd was just for backgrounds
oh...seems windmills are missing...dang, i've spent some time on em
Thanks for everyone who watche my stream ;] played 83 entries, another of that left for tommorow, so far 3 winning chances found
I can go for army of one and under 100mb prizes
But I know I won't get any of them cuz I'm still too bad :D
@gaunt copper did you make it to the Tensor Blink?
Yes ๐
you one of 3 mentioned winning chances ;]
@west wing https://www.twitch.tv/videos/262006095 around 8 hour 45 minute
Damn! Twitch loads slow for me at this moment. Gonna check it tomorrow!
@gaunt copper Thanks for playing my game as well! Watched your stream for a while yesterday. I was the City of Goo creator (Flash-like game with fire hydrants and lamp posts that can be possessed with goo balls). I was so pleased that I almost got a Good rating for my game from you ๐
@supple sierra It's using Paper2D? or something else?
I haven't worked with 2d too much before now, but I think that's what it was? It was mainly the sprites and flipbook assets in Unreal
There was probably a much better way than the hacky method I did it which was using normal 3d Characters pawns with 3d collision placed on the same X-axis displayed visually with 2d sprites in 3d but I didn't want to risk going too far out of my comfort zone in a such a limited timeframe
flipbook? then that was Paper2D system for 2D games in UE4
not bet and it interesting that it looks like flash game in UE4 ๐
the main issue i notice that lamp was only useful powerup
Yeah I used to make Flash games in uni several years ago before I switched over to Unity and eventually Unreal ๐
Yeah that's something I eventually noticed way way towards the end of testing that the Fire Hydrant was mostly useless
There not much 2D games on UE4 due to fact it's quite heavy, unlike Unity which has 2D orgins
Yeah that's understandable since Unreal definitely seems like it was meant mostly for 3d games
I wasd originally going to make something 3d most likely with an artist friend of mine but he wasn't able to join at the last minute
So I had to draw the only assets I knew how to which were 2d ones lol
thru i know creazy person who make word game with UE4 on Android which he could make on Android UI system with same quality :p
maybe next time 3d ;]
Ye!
Need to make sure my artist frien comes along the next time so I actually have assets to work with lol
ok i be going ;] cya tomorow on stream ;p
See you!
Hey @gaunt copper , thanks for playing and streaming all the entries (๐ฎ ), i made TRS and i want to point out a couple of things: 1) You forgot to rate it in your list :D. 2) You need to press the spacebar only once and all the moves will be played in sequence automatically. 3) To kill enemies you need to be in "Scale" mode. ๐ ๐
Check out our entry https://suprdlareme.itch.io/lattice
@glass fossil indeed i forgot to rate ;p thanks for reminding me ;p
Resuming UE4 GameJam Spring 2018 showcase broadcast, around 80 entries left to go? :p https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver #gamedev #UE4GameJam
@gaunt copper I watched how you play my game! It went better than I expected!
I only had like a half of a day on levels, and yet most of design ideas worked.
You almost evaded that dangerous thing in Basement though.
Our game is up next if anyone wants to join in - multiplayer. Shadowriver is on a dinner break but he'll be back in roughly an hour. Just have it downloaded and register an account once you log in to be ready! His 100th game to be shown too!
https://itch.io/jam/2018-spring-ue4jam/rate/258140
Oh, maybe hes back now!
<@&213101288538374145> can i spam here my tweets from this game jam? (self promotion)
if it isnt a gazillion sure
each post have several images
@digital fern TY. Sorry if too much.
dang it
i personally can understand wanting to show it off, especially since generally a jamgame's life isnt that long. so I'll allow it, but cant speak for my moderator brethren hehe
@digital fern cant speak for @everyone?
@digital fern well, i always will understand if you will use the power of banhammer etc...and (a)everyone makes mistakes
<_<
pouring @digital fern a cup of hot chocolate. - "Here, people say it's good for the heart."
Sadly i was not able to complete all entries today, around 15 of them left, gonna finish them tomorrow or next day after typical time i did diner break
In case anyone's interested, I put my game jam project on Github for learning purposes. Here's the link: https://github.com/wanderrful/FiresaurusRex
Resuming #UE4 GameJam Spring 2018 entry showcase, 16 entries left to finish up, hop in. https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
Hey @gaunt copper thanks for playing our game: Bird God. For the changing form issue, sadly we forgot to bind the transformation keys to a QWERTY keyboard. We work with AZERTY european keyboard and the corresponding keys to the number are:
- use & key instead of 1 to change to the red form
- use รฉ key instead of 2 to change to the blue form (but i don't know if you have this key on a qwerty keyboard xD)
- use " key instead of 3 to change to the yellow form
But the game is better played with a gamepad, which is fully functionnal ๐
ok i can replay it ๐
im streaming right now ;]
but after i finish all entries i almost there]
Oh nice! Thanks a lot! I'm watching right now ๐
Do you have a gamepad?
Here's a link with an updated version if you want ^^ I corrected the binding
https://evans-bohl.itch.io/bird-god-with-correct-binding
thanks again! ๐
ok hop in in to stream :p
So i finished playing all entries, thanks for watching ^^ Here copy of my rating list https://pastebin.com/4m6ptHJt Maybe i will stream something Sunday :>
@gaunt copper thanks! I watched through it in last three days when I could.
I am scheduling a stress test on our entry CastleDay's WarHill this Sunday (20th) at 6 PM PST for those who want to come along. A video will be recorded during the event as well. If anyone has questions let me know! It was fully programmed in Blueprints. Here is our link: https://itch.io/jam/2018-spring-ue4jam/rate/258140
@raven sundial are you continuing development on this? It was cool watching the stream during the jam
@keen flame Yup we sure are. Expect a lot more comming - our stream has been down as our video card fried 2 days after the jam. Luckily EVGA support was awesome and we got the warranty already replaced. And thanks for the comment! Glad to hear people enjoyed it!!
haha I guess way too late^^ but I finally was able to push over some of the models for our project to sketchfab xD https://skfb.ly/6znqH
These are models I created for my team during the 2018 Spring #ue4jam. The gamejam lasted for 5 days so expect some baking errors and messy UVs ;)
The theme for this gamejam was: Transformation
As always, one additional day for polishing the gam...
Anyone beat us?
Anyone interest in helping stress test our submission?? Streaming it here: (https://www.twitch.tv/gamedevbeauty) Download is here: ( https://itch.io/jam/2018-spring-ue4jam/rate/258140)
I can't wait for the voting to end, I want to finally upload an update that includes new mode, settings, music, more visual effects, camera animations and new plant type
@glass fossil same here, i'm implementing checkpoints and a better AI for TRS.
@glass fossil Ya me too. I've been sharing my post UE4 jam builds via Dropbox since the deadline
hey guys when is the voting going to end?
Last time I checked (yesterday), it was going to end on thursday morning, but now it seems that they added another week to the voting process lol
https://itch.io/jam/2018-spring-ue4jam
That's odd, can anyone confirm?
Yeah they seem to have added another week or whatever. I noticed it on the day the voting countdown was supposed to finish.
They confirmed on their twitter.
awww
imagine if they genuinely spend 30 min+ per game
wishful thinking on my part ๐
Hmmm. For some reason my game reappeared in "Latest games" on Itch. That's strange.
Dashboard shows a short bump of downloads too.
Okay, found it. It wasn't latest, but "fresh games" section. Working like poor man's featuring.
Anyone know why the jam stream was delayed? I've never seen that happen before ๐ฎ
The games were too awesome and they spent too much time playing each of them, so they didn't have time to finish all of them yet?
@slate salmon - Lots of fantastic entries and scheduling conflicts.
Ah makes sense, there was a lot of super fun entries this time around
How many game jams have you guys done over the years? I've got 8 so far and I'm not sure if that counts as "very experienced" yet.
8 is a lot! Only two for me ^^
cute ๐
https://itch.io/jam/2018-spring-ue4jam
so... now the voting count is missing 11 hrs does anyone has any info on that?
@coral otter Scroll up -- June 14th is when it was reschduled to
@dusky vessel yeah i know that tough the counter says other thing so that's why i am asking (maybe the counter is wrong then.. )
can i sell my game after giving it to a game jam?
You can do whatever you want with it, it's yours @glass fossil
who won game jam?
Lol

Hi. Are the UE4Jam results still happening tonight?

The games have been submitted, the jury played them, and it's time to announce our winners! There were many incredible projects and it was a
We got an honorable mention! It's the best result I've ever had in a game jam.
Grats to all the winners and honourable mentions \o/
does anyone knows when epic gonna send e-mails for winners?
Hey any one in any jams then pls contact me.I am a modeller and I want to work in a game jam

Ah, is there no blogpost for the gamejam this time around?
Who know when is the next jam pleaze? ๐
@upper dirge Probably next month
@dusky vessel okay thank ^^ all information will ne on the blog? It's that?
How do you guys share Blueprint Libraries in an local enviroment without the help of online sources?
I tried symbolic linking to a volume in our network but its not working somehow
cause im a retard with cmd/powershell
linking local dirs works fine, but somehow not network volumes
first jam tomorrow! any audio tips or tips in general?
Setup source control and get familiar with it
prefer to reduce the scope of your project and refine it.
Are there any details about the next jam out
not yet, it's not until August as far as I'ma ware
There's an Awful Jam on the 6th that I plan to do
The stuff you put on bread xD
JK xD
It where you create a game in a certain ammount of time if im correct.
when next jam starts
sup
Hey guys quick question -- have any of your previous game jam projects ever tangibly helped to get you hired?
Yup
Yes for me too
How can you even tell? Or does your portfolio only contain gamejam games?
Coming from someone who used to hire, anything that makes your resume different than the other 40 before you is good
It gets boring reading the same ole same ole
sure, if you mention you won an ue4, maybe, but side projects are usually way more complex
and usually outshine something you did in 3-5 days
look at it this way... if you have a college grad that works for comcast and a college grad that made a game during a gamejam, guess who gets the interview?
there are college grads that work for comcast who apply for a gamedev position?
lul
when they are the only tech joint around, sure. plenty I saw from there
easily half, acutally
no one wants to work for them ๐
interesting to know, since you mention comcast, I assume america?
I (mostly with skilled teams) made a coupe of game jam games that have millions of views on YouTube
They help alot when getting freelance jobs, pretty sure those helped Victor as well ๐
Yup
@somber hazel I pretty much only had gamejams before my first job
Then finally got some school stuff up there
Between those and finally my full-time freelance post graduation...just kinda kickstarted my career I guess.
But yeah, wouldn't have had anything without my jams
But you had the university VR game + a couple of gamejams and let's not forget it was a winner ;P
Sure, it doesn't hurt and it's definitely better than nothing and I do have a jam game on my portfolio, but I never mention it on any letter of application or cv.
oh my, you should!
doing a game jam and completing it shows a good few things
dedication, ability to work under (insane) time constraints, creativity on short notice..
making a 'full' working game in days is not something to sneeze about
If I was job searching, that'd probably be the top of near of my list.
of course, this applies to my own little world in my own little shit-town. Result will vary obviously
I'd certainly be putting those on a cv though... they are pretty major accomplishments in my eyes
if you REALLY didn't know programming well, you'd NEVER be able to make a game on short notice
again, coming from management I'd MUCH rather hire a gamejam guy than some random joe off the street with no practice in the field (qualified or not)
now if he's an ex-Projekt Red or something, yeah, you're kinda boned. Chances are you probably aren't going for a high-profile job?
ends morning rant and goes back to coffee'ing
but they are in the portfolio anyway, wouldn't you rather see it there instead of reading a generic line like 'I worked on this gamejam, learned how to communicate with members on an international level, dedication, ability to work under (insane) time constraints, creativity on short notice'; but you are also comparing with a random joe off the street with no practice in the field, then ofc the gamejam guy wins
I was assuming we are comparing gamejam guys VS people with side projects/something to show; what company hires a fresh student grad with nothing to show off nowadays ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ (not in my country at least)
ends morning conversation and goes back to water'ing
Don't know about the mention of gamejam on a CV/Resume. Pretty sure I don't
It should be used for work experience and skills
A link to portfolio there is what folks usually do
It really boils down to who is hiring you, the competition, the location where you are applying, etc
I definitely think it's worth doing/putting in there somewhere
It's certainly an accomplishment.
besides, if you plan on working on game dev, no better way to get used to the crunch
worship the crunch ๐
y tho
I mean, yeah, sometimes you gotta crunch - why idolize it? Maybe you're way more effective than me through crunch, but I still don't think its something to yearn for.
oh I hate it.
but if you're a game dev working for someone
the crunch is absolutely inevitable
so get used to it if you're in this field.
crunch just means that management failed
I wouldn't ever go on a prolonged crunch period for another company
...they don't?
sure, they is always pre-launch stress
always
but if it goes longer than one or two weeks
it kills studios
smaller ones
ah yeah, I'm referring to that
constant-crunch? fuck that
not enough money in the world
which, speaking of crunch, 14 hour day for me.
tips hat ladies, gentlemen... have a delightful day/evening
Yup. Just went through that myself on this last release
14-hr days for weeks is crazy crunch
But try 16-20 hour days.
7/week
doubt id get a job if i put my jamgames on a job application, i might get into an insane asylum with em tho ๐
and if i would put a team together myself I wouldnt put that much value into jam submissions
if its art id want to inspect some models and see some live action while making em, if its code id want to them to go over it and explain what he is doin
but when is next jam, i still wunna do this crazy thing didnt have enough time last jam ๐
hey guy I want to know how to build game little kitten my favorite cat 1.program design 2.program game design
yea, me too ๐
silly gamers ๐
hi
It did ๐
I like the ability to comment on each game
Can get feedback and such that way
finally a game jam I will be able to participate in
let me not speak to early, im using travelling or moving
usually*
so btw, my name is Rei and I am looking for a team, ive never participated in any game jam, but i have been working in ue4 for about 2 years, my talents are gameplay programming in blueprints and pretty much a generalist, this is my latest work (Bonus level from my adventure game Rat Tales) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_Bwoz5fFIY i made this in a day so i think i would be a valuable addon to your gamejam team ! thanks!
what can I say, its been a really long day #ImagineGamesOrlando #UE4
nm i saw there is alink for this stuffs
grr, in the middle of OrlandoIX
@copper carbon I'm really happy you liked Firesaurus Rex last time! I hope it was a close call to be a finalist
It was SO good ๐
@dusky vessel The others cracked up watching me play through it. I was absolutely smitten. I hope you'll participate again!
same here finaly got time to participate in the jam
Awesome!
I got to do the last UEJam.
Anybody looking for a sound guy for their team?
hope its cooled down a bit by than ๐
I'mma do a livestream playthrough of the next jam
Like I used to do
If I can get Dallar as a giveaway prize
@pine fulcrum Here's your Dallar
but 250 submissions is the norm now ๐
if possible ill step up my game tho, one will recognize the owinator game from miles away
the internet doesnt forget
@stable kiln You know, when i was in Spain, there was this smell that was recognizable from miles away...
@stable kiln just make sure your game will be recognized for something good
@pine fulcrum then I must join ๐
@compact cedar are u tryin to tell me something?
@stable kiln do not make a sh*tty game
@proven badge how are you making those characters? they look like made out of plaster/clay
so whats ur best solo jam?
i can make whatever the fuun i want
you cant tell me what too make
ill pick gamey mcgameface as my champion, ill let him fight any of ur solo games made in 3 days
eh?,. oh that one was made 2 jams ago. it's just a quick zbrush sculpt with super quick diffuse paint
I stand by all my submissions, dont regret any of em
but we all know, the kung fury submission was the best one ๐
yea, just needed some custom punk music and would be a cult classic ๐
@stable kiln but people who play them may regret...
*looking at ownreal
@compact cedar so whats ur best solo 3 days game than?
ownreal is top notch
keep in mind i made none of those levels myself
@stable kiln i have no solo submissions ;_;
hahah i like your self esteem ๐
so you lose by default for not having a champion
@stable kiln are we competing already?
well i challenged you to put forward ur best solo jam
and you have none
sad u tell me my submission is crap when u have nothing to show
ownreal is super high in tech fora jamgame, not much time left for other stuff
name 1 submission that had a lvl editor that stores the maps online so others can play em, over every submission ever
i only have team submissions
admit my defeat
@stable kiln why not to make an actual game this time? i have no doubt you have the skill
however is not up to me to advise
I usually pick a new feature in newest release or something cool i found and go with that
niagara?
mayB some other time not much docs on em atm
heared it crash a lot and only took a lil look at it
still has bugs (warm up doesn't work for some reason), but haven't crashed on me
mayB compositing, but crazy file size on that stuff
perhaps the new audio engine, ill have to see when the time comes, most stuff in 420 is optimization/workflow and network
Game jam so close. Excited!
Just finished a month long game jam. If anyone is interested, here's the link to my team's entry: https://jfaw-love.itch.io/world-pup
CryptoMiner
Don't know why it's showing that. I'll try reploading soon I've reuploaded a new version -- I hope this time it won't give you that error. I didn't get it here on my Firefox fwiw.
pretty sure that is a standard thing shown for new games now
Whenโs the next jam that a beginner can try and solo?
Is there a ue4 jam coming up?
@rugged widget should be one the 16th to 21st iirc
I see thanks
@robust basalt ok thanks, but is ludum using unity or ue4?
oh ok, i think a lot of game jams ive seen prefer one or the other
is there a game jam coming up?
Also: https://itch.io/jams
I am interested in jamming, so hit me up if you guys need an artist
Howdy y'all!
I have been joining the UE4 game jam for years now. I'll be joining the 2018 UE4 summer Game Jam as well. I'm currently looking for 2d/3d artist, composer/sound effect, and designers. If you're interested in joining check pm me or go here: hereย https://crowdforge.io/jams/ue4jam/teams/1874
Idk if I will be participating, I want to, but I have an ongoing project and I want to just chill the rest of the summer
no friggin' way ๐ฎ
'ALLAR DALLAR AWARD
The "Allar Dallar" category award will go to the game that both Allar and his community of twitch viewers were entertained by the most This doesn't mean the "best" game or most fun, but simply the most entertaining. All game jam entries will be streamed via awesomeallar beginning upon the close of submissions - August 21 at 3pm EDT. Each winning member of this category will receive 4000 Dallar from Dallar.org'
This clearly means Dallar is as equally worldly significant as igda
Its an award that maybe @stable kiln could win
or not
iunno
@pine fulcrum is there a tutorial on how to add dallar microtransactions to an unreal project?
gunna put my good skins behind a paywall ๐
prolly make it hardcore pay to win
:0 dallar is a sponsor? clearly that means I have to make time to participate!!
Do you need to use crowdforge.io to make the team
or can it be done through discord or w/e
@wise apex it's like 2.58 cents worth of dallar ๐
So its per team member
But what was too complicated to write was
If you have less team members
You still get the same pot
so like if you had 4 team members instead of 5
its 2500 each
And our value did recently just drop D:
But we might pitch forward some more
So I might participate in this jam with one of my colleagues - as a pair we're an experienced designer/scripter and an experienced programmer. Could do with someone with complimentary skills (preferably someone with a bit of experience)
prolly wunna get an audio guy than, allways start to late with that ๐
Ludum Dare 42's Theme: Running out of space
audio is welcome, but I can do a bodge job on that myself xD
Are utility and code plugins (eg. https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/node-graph-assistant or https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/gc-fsm) allowed to be used in jam entries?
Hey, I'm in. Almost missed the jam.
For my game jam team I was making a list of all the possible jobs and hats you can wear while making a game jam thing. I wanted to post it here to see if I'm forgetting anything. Am I forgetting anything?
* Jobs in a game jam team:
** Leadership
- Project Management
- Game Design
** Art
*** Visual Art
- Environment
- Character
+ Rigging
+ Animation
- UI
- Writing
- Visual Effects (VFX)
*** Audial Art
- Music
- Voice
- Sound Effects (SFX)
** Programming
- Gameplay
- AI
- Animation
- UI
- Network
- Physics
- Graphics
- Audio
@dusky vessel may be a community manager ...and for audio , missing task : integrate /program audio
Cm for jam?
its more about marketing / promotional purpose . even its only a Jam , the game is to be play , get a press kit ( or similar form ), ..
why would you do any of that for a game jam?
I probably would be more broad with descriptions - in game jam terms, a programmer is a programmer, you don't need to define what kind of programmer since it's basically implied they'll be working with all of it
You might have environment art and character art, possibly a separate animator
I'd be surprised if the person doing the rigging wasn't the animator
Looks like role layout for a bigger indie development team with 2 year in development title. No technical artists though.
My jam team:
art dude (if I have one)
code dude (me)
optional other art dude
optional designer/code dude
sound dude (if I have one)```
How do you people find a team you can rely on?
Ask for a portfolio and talk with the whole team beforehand. You will spend 5 days each other, this is the bare minimum.
I even had a guy with a fake portfolio, so yes, talking with them is necessary.
But don't be surprised, it's difficult to find those guys ๐
Oh man that's rough the fake portfolio thing
The moment he joined voice chat, I knew I f up ๐
But that was at jam start, so 2 late already.
Did you just kick them from the team and leave the role empty
or did you try and work with them
I assume the former*
We were writing before the jam, but the first time we all talked together was after theme announcement. I instantly said to the team, I won't work with him, because he gave 0 input about the game idea, saying 'me art, me no give feedback about anything, give me art job, I do 1000 assets'. After I said this is a gamejam, we'd love to hear your opinion and if you want to go this art direction. Then he started to get aggressive, saying I act like a boss. Then he trolled by constantly adding the word 'zombie' to our ideas. Other team members said, we can give him a job and see if he does something. I ditched him after this first talk and did the stuff he was meant to do, turned out I was right, next days he always said 'I'm finished tomorrow'. Le fin. He obviously never showed/uploaded anything.
Either people are actually weird like that, or 1 of my 2 possible guys that hate me, trolled me with a voice changer. But that would be ridiculous.
So yeah, people are weird.
And hearing someone's voice is a better indicator than text.
more ppl on the team doesnt allways make stuff go faster ๐
team can be a motivator or the opposite, usually i just solo so if i get bored i can tie a knot on both sides and just submit as is ๐
5 days 8 hours a day is not gunna happen for me
ill leave that too the try hards ๐
disagree, if you find the right guys, they will push your limits and you want to contribute as much as you can
mweh, if im not havin fun im done in a few hours
you will have fun if your team members upload cool stuff
I had good experience with my sound team members, I mean I have no idea of creating audio in general, but after they uploaded very unique stuff to the project that I couldn't find on any GDC audio bundle or free available website, I was always pumped up
There we go.
sweet
Back to normalio
Np, shit happens
I seen some cool place to recruit folks
but I can't remember the site name
it wasn't itch it was some linked site from here I think
Crowd finder or something, anyone know what it is?
sweet
If anyone is interested.
We have 2 people who can code, 1 of those people is an artist, and we have another guy doing audio. Probably could do with another artist if anyone is last-minute looking.
Updated EpicLeaderboard to 4.19 and 4.20 for the jam, good luck to everyone participating http://epicleaderboard.com/
Thank you @random iron
Hai o/ I'm a new to ue4jams and got a few questions about some stuff is this a good place to ask? ๐ค
yep
Nice, so as far as i understand we dont join as team but someone submits for the team right?
And didnt see anything about engine version so i assume thats up to us
Aand this is a stupid one but, its fine to create an empty project now to set everyone up on source control right?
Thanks, have a good one :)
Do we have to register as a team for the jam, or just submit the project before the deadline?
Hi, what happens if I don't get to submit anything for the jam. Nothing much?
the ghost of unsubmitted jam games haunts your dreams for the rest of eternity
* (The desire to avoid having an unsubmitted jam game fills you with DETERMINATION.)
^
@urban temple submit
Hi! I'm having some trouble ignore a file in git ignore and I was wondering if I could get some help.
I'm trying to ignore these two files
I tried adding them directly to the git ignore and also left clicking on them and adding them that way and neither of those methods worked
I think you can't, as they already versioned.
This is the first time I participate in such an event as a sponsor, it will be very interesting to watch! Good luck to everyone ๐
I'm losing at least 2 days due to moving to a new office, it's gonna be fun trying to get a prototype ready in even less time ๐
They've done some interesting themes though, always makes it fun to try come up with an idea that fits the theme
5 more hours!
game jam!
Ya'll ready for the theme announcement?
I'll give you a hint!
It's going to be...............................................
announced on the live stream
Spoilers
having fun syncing my personal desktop to remote clients all over the world for source control
i guess i shouldve sent that email asking for assembla a bit earlier huh
Are we allowed to setup SVN repos now
or do we have to wait until it starts
Also whens the livestream gonna start?
settin up SVN generally not counted as work on the jam
theres like 7 minutes left until 2pm
whats the theme?
wheres the stream
thanks
is Slapunas going to join this jam?
@fair oak Feel free to re-send that without the discord link. Deleting for now. Thank you
is the theme being announced AT five, or just during the stream which starts at five
its the end of the stream
We're announcing it as the last bit of this stream
I'm ready to update the channel topic with the theme. ๐
Heeey Devs!
Have you never heard of the Games Factory?
It's a Community of video game creators that organizes lots of events!
Join us in ten days to spend our seventh Games Factory Jam together: https://itch.io/jam/games-factory
A game jam from 2018-08-24 to 2018-08-29 hosted by Games Factory. You have 60 hours to make a game ! RULES You can do it on the game engine you want You can use public content if it is royalty-free You can do NSFW ga
They're about to announce the theme!
i can barely hear them
Well I think they'll show it on the screen hopefully.
Well that escalated quickly
Good luck, Have fun!
lol
you guys have wrong theme here :p
Alright I have a challenge: Make a game with no escalators.
I wish the theme was a bit more generic
Yeah their themes are always a little generic.
I'm the sort who doesn't just get ideas like that.
specific themes limit you
Which is why I have a friend.
the typical UE4 theme is usually more philosophical
I usually don't even get any decent idea for UE4 themes
Yeah generic themes give a large amount of freedom, which is fitting when you consider that it's UE4.
what is the deal with space cats, is it some kind of inside joke?
Yeah I dunno about that space cats thing.
Just some Unreal livestream cringe
Space cats on escalators.
hmm
time for zero games with escalators since everyone thinks everyone else is making a game with escalators
^
and at least three games about wells escalating quickly
And a ton of games where the difficulty escalates quickly.
Wells on escalators?
escalted
a game where you have to spam esc and alt
@civic dock you listed the channel topic wrong
The theme is clearly
Well that escalted quickly
And what's wrong with the theme in the channel topic?
pfist did a typo
Its spelled correctly (therefore incorrectly)
Pbbbt!
Hey
๐
Literally everyone responsible for Peole
is no longer at Epic
I have no part in that however
get dem peole escalted
I hope I don't get dinged too hard in the "unique use of the theme" category for making a game about elevators ๐
Elevators instead of escalators? Brilliant.
Nobody else may tread on this man's property.
you're right, it's clearly a 5/5, what was I worried about?
https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/procedural-escalator <-- this guy is about to be very happy
lol, awesome
So excited to see what you all maaaaaaake ๐
I'm excited to make it
I'm ready for WindowsNoEscalators
already have a great idea, just need to procrastinate for 72 hours before getting on it
this is a thing being streamed
I was wondering about that, is there a place to submit our streams? or just anything with the #ue4gamejam tag will be picked up?
Concept sketch done by a programmer: โ
Cause it isn't a gamejam without a programmer doing some art hahah
@pine fulcrum WindowsNoEscalter
sharks and volcanoes? looks epic already

I regret my decisions already
I think a marmalade seduction game would fare better
isnt it near 300 submissions on average now?
LMAO at that marketplace asset
he needs to update fast
๐ฐ
๐
thats a lot of competition
This is going to be a good jam.
yep, now i just need to think of an idea
Have fun, whoever has to play all the games.
I can't participate until Sunday, so it will be a traditional 48-hour jam for me.
Yeah I need to get an idea too...
Usually 150-200 outside of the MegaJam
But that's submissions
Yeah I bet about half the people who signed up won't end up submitting their games.
Oh, I thought you meant participants.
WindowsNoEntries
lol
Wau, you are right, 481 joined, have fun @pine fulcrum ๐
Nah, last jam was about 180 games with 400 devs or so.
That's still a great ratio.
Any advice on how to get game inspiration?
I love them.
โค
Aside from just banging your head on the wall?
@hardy thicket play scriblenauts
brainstorming time! ๐
Do you guys think we should move this channel up to the General category so it gets more visibility?
Scribblenauts huh?
โค @copper carbon
Yall must have gone to Dennys, because this chat is a grand slam
Google different meanings and interpretations
Gah, the puns are too strong!
cant watch a playtrough, have to play it urself
And how will that help?
we all know the meme right?
Allar
@copper carbon in other words (pun intended), a thesaurus?
You are now on my Christmas card list.
Should give you a variety of ideas
i have one, buildings
I always recommend Wordnik.
@safe island ayyyye
180 games damn, that's insane
MegaJam had like.. 280. There were so many ๐ฎ
woah
that's not too many compared to LD
scribblenauts is super fun to try silly stuff
i got into 100 top list from time to time in ludumdare
@pine fulcrum You're not kidding. This channel really is a grand slam.
Moving so fast. Love seeing all the excitement around the jam!
I don't think anyone even saw my question about moving the channel.
how many solo dev games are there usually
I don't even know what Dallar is.
from what I saw it looks like most people are in teams
I just wanna do something cool.
@acoustic willow at least one o/
@copper carbon messaged me on the side and was like, wow Allar, Dallar has contributed to a 500% increase in activity
what things escale fast?... drugs, viral stuff in internet, nano robots, zombie virus
lol
^
lol
Perfect.
#neverforget
I heard a rumor Dallar helped Fortnite become an international sensation.
escalted peole and zombies vs space cats
Unrealbot is on point for this jam. https://i.imgur.com/NlpOf0t.png
yeah
I'm really surprised @copper carbon typoed the theme so hard, its honestly a really weird way to spell Space Cats
oh so
just when I was going to stuff those 60 megascans there
escalted quickly, space cats... why not both?
1GB, that's just my source folder man XD
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
@small fern It's much higher if you use Butler, which is a badass tool I recommend learning.
you can still just put a googledrive link on the itch page right?
I don't want to learn tools on game jam
I should make a tutorial for itch.io/Butler/UE4. This would've been the perfect time.
never used itchio either
Considering no one needs butler until 4 days from now
if any, forget tools no @small fern ?
it's more like, learn them 15 minutes before deadline kinda thing
only four days? lucky me tomorrow i'm taking my holidays
only?
I personally use Butler right away. I package asap and set up the build pipeline so I don't have to worry about it later.
it's 1.5 days longer than in the old days ๐
Plus iterating on builds and playtesting them is easy with the itch app.
I've never heard of butler before right now
Command line tool for uploading/patching builds. It's great.
It's basically a grand slam.
yeah, that was linked on game jam page
๐ฅ ๐ฅ
oh, nice
already using sourcetree + bitbucket for source control but that looks handy for patching
It is. Especially if people use the itch app to play the games, which they should. ๐
It's not hard to get it to less than a 1 gb, just make your project and then use 7z to compress it to the smallest possible leve.
5 days it seems
aaaaa only 4 days and 23 hours and 15 minutes left
The itch app supports automatic updates if you use butler to upload/patch.
Butler does delta patches, too. When you update the build, it only uploads changed files.
@hardy thicket I'm not really serious, you easily go under 100MB for UE4 game
you can add an external file or dropbox item
@small fern I wasn't being entirely serious either XD
@civic dock - That would be great for us to post somewhere prior to the MegaJam
if u use unmodified paragon assets ur over 1gig super fast ๐
I'm kinda worried about assets, but you can only do so much as a 1ma
@copper carbon Perfect, I'll get on it then. ๐
Just use smaller assets.
@acoustic willow leverage the marketplace
(as if that's possible)
won't that look bad though? just using marketplace assets
Just use a smaller hard drive
if you look at previous game jam winners, it's probably super rare for anything high poly to ever win
keep it simple
If you make your game on a 15" monitor it'll be smaller
Oh got a little idea, gonna talk with my team a bit before I start work on it though.
oh also weird question but there's no controller requirement right? if it's keyboard + mouse only it's all good?
but my discord is on my 15" :/
@acoustic willow you absolutely have to implement an Alexa
keyboard + mouse is fine
and it must be 100% voice controlled
๐ค
controller only is probably going to be worse
time for a game controlled entirely by unplugging and replugging the USB port
So far I think theres exactly 2 game jam entries in the history of Unreal jams that use voice control
voice controlled platformer where everything moves at impossible speed
I remember only one ๐
that was hilarious
and super annoying
Yeah voice controls don't work very well except for party games.
Though if it's a party game, go wild.
in the one I saw, they put all the effort on getting the voice controls
rest of the game was super basic
and what if my game requires HOTAS controls?
probably against the rules
(better read them)
don't be the guy who submitted Unity game
I'm not seeing the rule that requires Unreal...
I think exactly 2 people have submitted unity games
ooh, there's the fine print
even steering wheels would be more common and even that is a niche
The first line in the rules is "Make a playable product (โSubmissionโ) in Unreal Engine 4 based on the theme โWell that escalated quicklyโ.
I got a steering wheel + pedal + shifter combo
Escalato Corsa
will spend 4 days only to tweak wheels force feedback
Submission must be packaged for Windows and playable on Windows 7, 8 or 10 or MAC OS X or Android or iOS.
there's no input limitation
so yeah, you can make game with input that nobody can play it with
kinda beats the point tho ๐
Requires Atari Controller
tac 2
Might suffer in the "Fun" category ๐
Requires modded Nerf rifle
there are two rules that I've always wondered tho
I think my 3rd Global Game Jam was a game where two players dueled eachother with an actual midi piano keyboard
Submission may not depict nudity, animal cruelty, or illegal activity or substance, or offensive or obscene subject matter as determined in Sponsorโs sole discretion.
Submissions must be appropriate for a broad audience since the winning Submission may be broadcast on the internet.
there's been pretty much gore in some past submissions
so those rules aren't exactly been written in stone
as determined in Sponsor's sole discretion
yeah, I guess violence is generally accepted
nope, lol
you sure you played it right?
I played it twice
It was that fun, huh?
It wasn't even fun
it was just like
holy shit
You spawn into a wedding, no context
and suddenly you have two pistols
and then as soon as you fired a shot
game went into slo mo with everyone running away from you
and that was it
you couldn't keep firing?
you had unlimited ammo
I think
and could turn everyone into ragdolls
It was also super super simple art
It was quite impressive what an impact it had for being so simple
I've been here for an hour with an idea and no darn name. Hardest part of anything.
my game is currently called "Jam"
I cannot bring myself to do that
there was no real rule against gore, it was too much gore or something
room for interpetation
this guy got a special mention ๐
oh my.
so if the subject keeps smiling its ok ๐
if you're happy and you know it
happyhappychopchop had some gore too, it was great ๐
and minefinder aswell, i do a lot of gore come to think of it ๐ต
Are you allowed to work on multiple projects at once?
man those are awesome thinking emotes
But
I need those
I also feel like there is no rule regarding them
I didn't see a rule either.
@copper carbon
That's what I'm hoping.
It's one submission per person/team, no?
yeah I thought i saw somewhere it said one submission
don't create a fake name
Work alone or with a team (up to 5 members total) to make the most incredible project in Unreal Engine 4 based on the given theme and submit before the deadline.
that says project, not projects
I'm not a native speaker tho
pretty common for audio guys to provide sound for everyone on RL gamejams
but online, meh
multiple entries = multiple instances of the rules
so
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
or not
i am not a lawyer
The only real answer you'll get is from either Amanda or Tim
But I'm like 90% sure that they'll say one project only
But I'm also like 40% sure that might not be enforcable
just join 5 teams, like a boss ๐
It could get weird with prizes.

I'd like him to stick to one team.
but what if.. you are the idea guy
you can throw ideas at multiple teams
that's a totally valid team position
Is it too late to join the jam?
I don't want to kick him of course, i just need to know that I wont be dq'd
and vague answer isn't helpful :<
I forgot it was on! ๐ญ
@violet kestrel Nope! Follow the link in the channel topic. ๐
@violet kestrel you can join ๐
It just started a little less than 2 hours ago. Plenty of time to get going!
What kind of work do you do?
He can only participate on one team...
Solo? @copper carbon
Laying down the HAMMER
Or make a team now
Gently
@rugged widget There's your answer. ๐
@pine fulcrum wait I thought this was UE4 game jam, not Source game jam ๐ฎ
Which means, the other team should be able to credit him, but if they win and you lose, he obviously can't ask for prizes.
@minor hemlock wat
Ah okay thanks
He has a special set of skills
Programmer & BP, but gonna do it solo sorry
Can't dedicate 100% of my time like I could previous jams
Depends on what you mean by fair, we have a guy who will only be helping out 3 hours a day or so
you don't really need the luck part tho
Tension builds as one turns down a team offer.
tension escalates...
escaltes
but quickly
i would team, but i dont wunna split my dallars
yeah I'm on a one man team and i have to say the team is really not pulling its weight. really disappointed in my teammates
A game about making games and your team slowly falls apart/yells at each other...
likewise
so what if you get the dallars and others get the SSD?
Just like how a coiled snake prepares to strike, the game devs strike like a coiled snake.
I asked a friend for ideas for a game for Well That Escalated Quickly
He says a game about Elevators
๐
Eeels and Escalators
haha, that's what I'm doing!
My first idea
If you win the Dallar award, will it reduce your chance to get an 'actual' prize? ๐ค
just like everyone else born in the 90s
no, but I've played Sim Tower?
too late to submit elevator and escalator pack to the marketplace now :/
ssd is only for top3 yo
@small fern It's never too late.
thought dallars were for top3 as well
@copper carbon my award winner doesn't rule someone out of the big 3 spots right?
I hope not
are dallars bills or coins?
@minor hemlock they are totally worth it
dallar dallar bills souds better than dallar dallar coins
I somehow feel dallars got tamed down to be allowed to be featured on the jam
give a lemon?
dallar dallar clink clink
giving fucks is now optional
ah, this has happened earlier already
A game about dallar currency exploding through the roof
aww i was gunna do that, u ruined it ๐
aw dang it
guess ill go back to my 1st idea about smoking crack ๐
altho ill not do crack cuz thats substance abuse
My audio guy chose a different team
Haha
Another artist left because the team got smaller
excellent progress on day 1, cull the weak.
abandon ship!
CULL THE WEAK!
while that's the official stance (single category winners are still eligible for grand prize) we all know that never happened in past ๐
(unless I've missed it)
@rugged widget use Soundly.
Yeah, I plan on it.
Haha.
They have lots of stuff on there?
Or is it fairly basic?
I don't use it's library alone, so, can't tell. With GDC packs I found pretty much everything I need last time.
will be streaming my jam dev progress this (hopefully entire!) weekend at https://www.twitch.tv/partlyatomic ๐ don't expect anything mindblowing, but chat is always welcome!
like soundly is good, but it's definitely just another library rather than the be all end all
so it's definitely worth having other libraries around
I have the GDC packs too
I think those were posted to gamedev at one point or another
think i deleted most of em, those packs were huge ๐
ill prolly do mouth sounds again, mayB cling some empty beercans together ๐
I have all GDC audio packs on same folder
@rugged widget just load them into soundly as local libraries and you should be fine searching for SFX.
but those aren't really that handy for gamejam, they require lots of processing
Okay, 2 hours and still no idea.
Except the joke about an infinite number of mathematicians. It just popped up on first minute.
me too
so how many people are doing games with Escaltors?
Came up with an idea that's going to take more than five days to develop, so dropped out of the jam to focus on giving this a proper treatment. As the saying goes: "Well, that escalated quickly!"
as long as you dont take a year and a half
to not finish it
@crisp flare look up games that already exist and try to see what you or your team can make similarly that will fit the theme
My idea is based on an old arcade game.
@hidden flicker A game about a jam project that spirals out of control during the early idea phase? I might actually go back and create an entry from that idea ... ๐
lmao
@hidden flicker last time it took me almost a day to figure something that fits in the theme and have reasonable amount of content.
I really like one of the winter jam finalists, where you shoot some spooks while being on cracking ice platform, and eventually fall to lower level.
i have to admit im already working on the concept and have figured out all the programming
my team came up with most of the idea though
ill give you a hint, something is going to escalate
quickly
what do you mean?
engine doesn't support my player pawn functionality by default
custom c++ pawn?
nah for the sake of jam, ill probably keep it bp
I thought to myself, "Hey maybe I'll use Forward rendering for my game since I don't need amazing graphics." Now it's stuck on 45% loading again.
how long has it been there
Like 3 minutes.
is forward rendering more performant at the cost of quality
3 minutes isnt that long
it might be fine
Yeah when you do big changes like that it gets stuck at 45% because it's compiling shaders.
I was on a roll programming some AI and then I just completely blanked lol
