#game-jam-chat
1 messages ยท Page 41 of 1
also 'cause I really want to learn to scope things better for solo stuff, so it's always good to practice with jams
I was originally going in with one of my artist friends but he had some personal things he needed to do at the last minute so I'm going solo as well
Going to be interesting trying to see what I can squeeze out all on my own!
You know it already, but reduce that scope size, and then reduce it again ๐
I always tell myself that I'll make a set of standard helper stuff I often use into a library and use that for jams, but never do, so I spend too much time on boilerplate
There is Game Jam Toolkit contaning boilerplate.
Oh yeah I remember that, didnt get to jam last time so I forgot about it
I'll check it out now, thanks
This is awesome thing.
More advanced than project templates, but still quite minimalistic, with a few files.
I wish we had more than one of it. Not for jams, but for general UE4 development.
Yeah I always spend more time than I can afford on recreating menus etc, this looks practical
hmm , mayB i should check that menu, im still usin the old1 i made for my 1st jam, kinda got attached to it tho ๐
but i should at least put 4k in there if i use it again ๐
is there any music in the paragon stuff, there is male announcer voice and characters got voices, but is there also music? ๐
@copper carbon I've sent you a PM. Thank You.
Hyped for the jam today!
me too
WHAT
Have questions about setting up lighting in your environment? This is the stream for you! Anton and Jordan will cover different lighting techniques, including
so the lifestream starts in 2hrs and 49 mins?
It starts in just under 2 hours
the theme announce will be at the end of it, around 3pm ET
Oh damn, party time soon. I've bought like 20 packs of ramen for the next days ^^
Grocery run soon for me
@calm heath have you ever used it before?
Other than making animations for it, no
I'd try to just play around with one of the templates now before it starts
there's a LOT to learn, but just getting familiar with it will help
I'd just read the whole docs before it starts lol
maybe package a template just to know the process so you dont fail to submit your game because you got stuck packaging
(package early and often, etc)
ok
in my country there is no ramen, i have only Rolton
in your country, the ppl read upside down apparently ^^ 43 minutes remaining until the stream shows up.
1h 37min
what is the stream about other than jam theme?
artistic lighting ๐
great, i consider myself an artist ๐
artistic lighthing is theme?
wow thats weird
we get to know the theme when the jam is over, its original i give u that ๐
well, im fine with that ๐
Stream is starting!
What's the theme?
12miN?
"Transformation" is the theme
Finally, a good, flexible theme
TRANSFORMATION
Nice
TRANSFORMATION you say
Gonna go for a walk and get some ideas out, pretty hands-on theme this time which is nice
I have one definite cool idea I'm going to try out
Just need to figure out how to flesh it out a bit since the idea currently has a hole in its execution which would need filling
i got a crap idea, those are the best ๐
i still think they should raffle those high end prizes over all valid entries...
It's 3 am here lmao
guessing will be seeing a lot of the free epic assets in the games
I tried going to bed at 11 pm but woke up at 2 am anyways

I'm still debating if I want to use those or if I'm going to do everything by my own hand
On one hand using those assets would save a lot of time and be a lot nicer than anything I could make
no rule say you can't ๐
you cant put expensive prizes on a competition that runs on the honor system
this is super bad
On the other, having most of the game as possible be made by me is an achievement in itself
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86UHZq59HKo
I would probably stick with this style of content, since it's pretty quick to produce.
Hey everyone! This is a video in my game jam tricks and tip series. We'll be looking at a technique I use to quickly develop 3D art assets for game jams :) I...
get an idea first, and wait few minutes for the updated rules on the forums, they might prohibit using those assets
you can do even better, i did once in LDJam
It's a puzzle game with some physics flavor! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/plugzzz
visually nice, but super easy to make in 1.5 day!
Looks trippy! ๐ฎ
Sorry for this if stupid... But I'm not really understanding what the theme is, anyone elaborate on "Transformation"?
it's a word @unborn ether
^_^
Looks pretty standard in terms of creation process.
The idea I have right now is a sort of 2d endless tower climb action game (Or maybe not endless depending on how I flesh this out) where the enemies in the tower are basically a black sort of goo which is harmless by itself but can possess objects to be different enemies. Defeating the enemies sometimes has the goo escape their shell and go possess other objects. To proceed through the level the player would need to collect enough goo to open the gateway (Usually done by defeating every enemy on screen)

well good luck every1, play nice
Good luck everyone!
good luck everyone
Landscape transformation sounds nice.
Good luck and have fun everyone!
Was really excited for the jam until my parents told me that I couldn't join the jam because my grades weren't high enough...
Rip
oO
Looks fine to me
actually its even better
Such a happy little accident! If you could produce that effect with a blendshape, you would have some cool transformation mechanics!
actually the chatr looks fine, the animation turns it inside out
its just not smooth transition
Any teams willing to take in a casual jammer? Just looking to contribute somewhere.
u could join me in making some retarded stuff, i dont have source controll set up tho
and dunno if ill even submit something
Sure, do you have anything you need immediately? Maybe set up a repo?
Typically use Blender and Krita for asset creation.
yea same
my namin conventions are horrible and i usually dump a lot of crap in there i dont end using ๐
if you want u can join but im just messin around ๐
Yeah, I still have to go to my regular 9-5 so I can't dedicate too much time, but anything I can help create or mess around with. Real casual.
well sure, i could end up playin fortnire the weekend and rough up some stupid shit in a few hours i dunno ๐
just be warned there wont be any fancy portefolio piece comin out of it
Not expecting it. But hopefully it'll be fun.
okay than, i havent used source in a while so u gunna have to walk me trough it a bit
I typically use Github so that's what I have most experience with. That, or could use one you those suggesting on the jam page.
I don't think it matters. I haven't used svn in a long time. Is there an equivalent to Github for SVN?
Or maybe you have a server set up somewhere.
ill just install tortoisegit if ur used to usin it
nah i installed it to help some1 with something
he had the server
lets take it to private so we wont clog the chat ๐
Well, here we go:
Hours working on the project: 2
Bugs in ue found: 1
Weird workarounds needed: 3
Still trying to transform my thoughts into an actual game idea
My very simple design document is finished
Been scripting for the past two hours and I'm very pleased with how progress is going so far
I'm faced with difficult question... Should I use marketplace content to save some time or do everything myself.
Probably to early to worry about it ๐ I have at least 1 more day before I need any actual assets.
and more like 2
I really need to learn not to keep full glasses of water on my desk next to all of my most expensive electronic things. I think I've spilled something in the last 3 jams I've done.
replace water with coffee and beer and ur fine ๐
I had to throw away a mouse pad because I spilled coffee with milk on it and it was smelling real bad even after washing it several times.
ho ho ho
Anyone that wants to use source control, you might wanna read https://www.sondergames.com/single-post/2017/07/19/Game-Dev-Version-Control-Overview
Jamming from Tahiti ๐ Good luck everyone! ๐
same same
Core mechanics are coming along nicely
Should be playable on the most basic of levels in a few hours
Nice!
All i got to do so far is thinking about it
@zenith gust I haven't started
It was 12pm when I got idea tho
And then I went to sleep
Now it's 1pm
And I'm not at home
Will be home in 1.5 hours tho
Same here, did some thinking before bed about the theme and now I've got a solid idea to get going with once I'm off work
But I have an awesome idea
And with small enough scope
And I have some pre-made rocks already
By some I mean about 20
But I will use only 5 of them
And make a new one just because
Gameplay! Nice ๐
pew pew pew
now i can transform dead bush into a green bush
and it has that pop into and out of the ground effect
it changes scale by curve so its more fun to look at
before
after
@glass fossil Looking nice! I'm hoping to have restoration as one of my mechanics as well, though probably only for structures/buildings
Arrghhh.. I'm so frusturated that I couldn't get in on this jam!!! /rant
Why can't you?
At home and ready to go, let's get this car on the road! ๐
Sweet!
This is taking a bit longer than I had thought
I should still definitely be able to meet the programming finish milestone I set for tomorrow though
i just got the first thing done for the jam ๐
\o/
bois
can you help me
I am setting up Stv
SO what to click when I download it
go on project files and?
think i used every option for skin weights known to man
even 1 unknown to the internet i think ๐
@boreal vale what is stv?
well, did you try to google it?
I will do tommorow with my team boss
that makes no sense
Well, everything going alright with this bird ^^
nvm remco
seems about right for a bird
Pretty good for 24 hours in!
Base mechanics are mostly done so now it's off to making different classes of enemies and perks
๐
sweet!
An awesome youtube playlist for happy background music ^_^ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE4v0ToPSXk&index=0&list=PLZlv_N0_O1gYfw89JtRX0bTb_YbxHOXwz
Join us in celebrating #EpicFriday as we showcase amazing community projects built in UE4! From one person teams to large studios, Unreal Engine is helping d...
wut naruto is UE4 too?
that game is sick good ๐
not so good background music if u keep the video on the foreground ๐
when you don't have assets ... you grow them ๐
Ooooh that looks great!
Nice!
The only real thing I'm worried about is the art
It's going to be flash art for my game but I haven't done it in a very long time so I'm not sure how well I'll be able to pull it off
well i just tested if my 6 hour model/weightpaint shit actually works
and it does thankfully ๐
looks freakin sweet ๐
Sweet!
guess doin a custom facerig every gamejam payed off a bit ๐
nice tree grow
finally prototype ready! - https://youtu.be/maQLOds3y9U - my first ue4 jam and I thrill!! haha
Prototype ready! Tomorrow Cosmetic!!
hope you're having a good time. and don't forget to sleep. Panic Time starts in 1,5 days ^^
https://i.imgur.com/PSIVV1Y.png
Literally.
no time for clean spaghetti GOTTA GO FAST
the logic is garbage too but hey, it works
that's cleaner than what my storms are like hahaha
progress on map
Looks nice so far!
tnx
Programming is basically done on my end so I've started doing art
My artist friend couldn't join the jam so I need to do the art myself this time around
So it might look less than satisfactory lol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49QiQOamIWk&feature=youtu.be
i had some free time during jam .... i did a minigame in our gamejam game ๐ ๐
Hardest part of any gamejam - sounds.
Hate that part.
is there an alternative to http://www.superflashbros.net/as3sfxr? things like freesound and stuff make it impossible to find anything with quality
Oh, right..
Soundly.. lets try that
Yeah I was just about to say
Epic is offering Soundly for the jam
Haven't looked at it yet though since I'm still doing my art
Yeah, I just remembered that.
Well, I don't have all my art done yet. But I usually leave sounds till the very end - and I need to improve on that
oh, jackpot! Soundly has exactly what I need.
Ayyy nice!
That's good to hear since I'll be going to dig for sounds of my own on there after I'm done with my art
Soundly is awesome.
I almost made my game
Only have to model and program meteors
And last day and maybe a half will be polishing
Are you not ENTERTAINED ?! @UnrealEngine #ue4jam #ue4 #gamedev #indiedevs #gameart https://t.co/vEVCYD5ed0
Great animation!
Pretty much added all I've wanted to add (Realistically) art and programming wise!
Now to add on sounds, make levels, polish, and then I'm done!
but you got another 3 days to go
It's more like two days for me since I need to go in for work on the last day
Either way, I don't want to accidentally bite off more than I can chew so I'll call it here for now in terms of programming and art and only come back to add onto it if I have a ludicrous amount of time left
I definitely don't want to underestimate surprise problems that could pop up during level making and/or polish time
slapuna's team posted, 50% of game jammers sign up their resignation
yeah, it's hard to handle missunderstandings in the team. one guy wan't dinosaurs, the other one cute puppies, and if you can't get them to make an arrangement, you lost. + frustration might be a factor.
well i spent more time than id like to admit on just wood
i feel pretty good about it though ๐
that's some neat looking wood
nice!
Good reminder to test packaging. Apparently I didn't have visual studio installed anymore. ๐
working most the jam so im using it to focus on learning more about materials and maybe a fun game will come out of it haha
I can use assets from the store as long as they're noted correct? Don't think I have time to make some characters
Yes, as long as you mention the assets that you didn't make yourself ๐
Yeah just something to replace the cubes I currently got lol
wow im doing ui work for jam..
accidentally progress bar was set to border render
i have a hard time finding the logic in the paragon materials and how its assigned ๐
another material i spent a bit much time on, unfortunately it doesnt look very good ingame ๐ฆ
what is it supposed to be? marble?
a cracked concrete sort of thing
If I only have one gamepad, how can I test players 2-4 to make sure they'll work? Do I need 4 controllers?
4 gamepads i mean plugged in lol
aww nevermind found the fix in maps & modes
oh ok
Level is done
just made clouds
i just love that DitherTemporalAA effect โฅ
i would say that its going pretty well
win screen done
ok my game is done now
TIME TO POLISH
after playing a round of fortnite... or pubg
any idea why Disable Input works fine for my controller, but not for my keyboard? Unfortunately I only have one controller to test with
nvm found away to make it work hehe
set UI mode only in the PC
this soundly app is super buggy. Can't click anything in it lol
weird, its working now. I have no idea why it was bugging out. Win 7
I could only click when I would resize the window it was weird
Oh my
I wonder what sort of game all these animations are going onto ๐
I just hope I ll manage to make all the stuff in time
and build gameplay with it ;D
already?
now do polishing
๐
yup, was born in game jams ๐
kidding, it will be hard to go to work and do the jam, so had to wrap up everything now to make it as complete as possible
I will have a "good enough" version later today, but there is still a long list of improvements.
hahahahahah
it is always never enough ๐ and always need things to be added or changed
Piecing together my last level now ๐
I'd like to have added a boss at the end but that would've probably been skirting a bit too much on the danger zone for the amount of time I have
oh damn, less than 2 days remaining, ..... tomorrow i'll get no sleep x)
I'm finally getting around to getting started on the jam, lol. Put out a call for a team on Crowdforge, but no luck. Oh well. Decided on trying for a sci-fi terraforming game in VR. My other idea will likely take more time than I've got left; this is maybe doable if I can find enough prefabbed stuff to use. Especially if I limit it to just one or two tasks/puzzles, with more to come as/if I have time
LOL Tankbuster. I know what you mean. My wife wants me to take time in the middle of the day tomorrow to go to a MewTwo raid in Pokemon Go since she's at work then.
Yeah final crunch time is beginning lol Good luck guys
There's still 46 hours left, that's enough to add several more features
heh
i'm bustin my ass here tryin to sqeeze a whole minigun into that tiny hand
these guns take sooo long ๐ญ
@proven badge dont forget to add gameplay ๐
it's in the hands of the coder
oh no. I'am the coder, so everybody will be mad, if i don't deliver nice gameplay tomorrow x). and it's already 0:10 am
Just finished rounding out my game with all of its levels!
Can be played from start to finish with no major issues at all
Anything I add on from this point on is all bonus ๐
Our level designer wasn't online the whole day. We've only got 1 unfinished level so far, not much gameplay, we need to rig and animate 2 more models, and create some SM, core gameplay needs to be implemented, ..... It's a disaster ๐ But It may be just finished in time. ๐
we'll give our best ๐
new material!
I started stream showing our current work
https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
do blueprints have a do while loop?
cant get the regular while loop to work
actually nvm, I'm getting an infinite loop regardless.
Another day of work done. Going to sleep. But I'm kinda impressed with my own progress today.
Dang it, had to restart my PC and windows wouldn't let me do it without installing some kind of major super slow update.
25% done in about 15 minutes, woohoo
Is there a way to clone my project but only transfer assets im actually using? Need to cut down on size from the assets im not using
nvm figured it out
You can just delete the unused files?
Almost time for submission on my end wew
Literally all I need to make now is the gameplay footage video and I'm golden
Oh no
Idk what I will do with audio
Because now I don't have it
And I need footsteps, explosion, falling, and some random magic idk what sound xd
Go download Soundly
Epic is opening it up for use
I used it for my game and it was super helpful
It's basically a gigantic database of sound files
Im not sure if its bigger, but it's much better IMO
at least in my case.
More useful sounds.
It allows to add local collections, including Soniss bundles.
Time to add actual levels.
Aesthetic looks great ๐
Thanks! It was a disaster yesterday.
Whoa that's awesome. Solo developer?
Still unhappy about the buttons. But I guess it will be waste of time considering I still need essential stuff added.
@glass fossil yes.
Very impressive!
Really? Thanks!
Yeah man that's pretty insane you did all of that by yourself
I would change the finish level sound effect though ๐
It's a bit jarring compared to the rest
True. It's actually same music, only started at specific time. I should find better timestamp.
Download and play City of Goo now: https://kreekakon.itch.io/city-of-goo (Reuploaded to fix typo)
Project has been submitted! ๐
I also just realized there's a typo in my trailer so imma hurry up and fix that
Your games are looking great! Ahhhhhh - I can't wait to play!
Hope you enjoy them Amanda! ๐
Oh and as a quick question @copper carbon , for the gameplay footage thing, would continuous gameplay footage be preferable, or would a trailer with text and more editing be sufficient as well? Since I have two videos here which fall into each category respectively (Uninterrupted gameplay and trailer)
Is there one I should choose, or can I just pick whatever one I like?
๐
Most of the time we only end up showing 15-20 seconds, so the more gameplay the better, IMO.
Let's people get a feel for your game (though does make it hard to find!)
I was going to do a 2/3rds game footage and 1/3rd Sequencer and mix it in as an opening or ending. But not enough time due to work, so it got chopped.
Alright I'll use the mostly unedited gameplay footage video for the that part of the game jam submission then!
The trailer will just stay on the game's own page
yea... 24h is not a lot.. Still plenty of work left
and looking at some screenshots here and on twitter, this jam looks to have a very high level
24h is really not that much. We have still some gameplay to implement and our artist is still working on the player character
i made some bleeps at work on my phone ๐
BeepBox is an online tool for sketching and sharing chiptune melodies.
23hrs seems legit
Tomorrow sch- cough cough shit just doing smthn that I can't not do
So I have about 5 hrs when I'm home tomorrow
Now I'm going to bed
Hell yeah. Crunchnight begins \o/
Resuming our Team Awesome Cats #UE4 GameJam broadcast. It is last night of a Jam (europe time), finishing touches in code, potential bug fixing, others do rush level building (again ;p) so potential mechanic building too https://t.co/Z8tk5vx1...
Doing sound effects always makes me laugh. I'm not sure if it's the lack of sleep or if it's just inherently silly, but every time I'm just facepalming and thinking "what the hell am I doing". ๐
hmm, crunch with 3 animations and no sound is 500 mb
man filesize is hardlocked on itch submission?
thats bull
welcome to ue4
I have no idea what it is or how it works, but apparently there's the Butler tool on itch.io that lets you do bigger than 1 gb uploads.
you can add an external file, is that valid?
My game was 460 MB zipped this morning. This might go up (since I added assets) or down (since I will be removing unused stuff), but that's pretty huge either way for me.
Change LOD Bias on textures, should help a lot ๐
oh noes... a very important part of gameplay isn't working anymore... and the guy who did it is sleeping x)
can level blueprints not override gamemode variables?
or set I mean?
I'm setting a gamemode variable to 0 in the level blueprint, but its still firing
nvm that's what child blueprints are for xD
level blueprint is complitly diffrent class
unrealted to game mode
it is ALevelScriptActor is i rember right
something liek that
Firesaurus Rex! will be the name of our submission
do we need to package for shipping or dev?
Package for shipping if you're submitting
Packaging for dev is only if you're still testing
alright thanks ๐
LAST MINUTE CRUNCHING BATTLE-CRY!!
ayeeeee
Remember to share your games when you're all done, I want to see what all of you guys have made ๐
Woohoo, all done and submitted. Now I can catch up with all the work I've been expertly avoiding for the last few days. ๐
Nice!
I completely destroyed my sleep schedule the past four days but was magically able to recover on today which was the day I had to go to work
So it all turned out alright lmao
Doesn't look like I'll be making it in time either. Unless things start working right in the next 3 hours.
Is anyone foolishly brave enough this time to stream playing through the games?
People tend to be all excited and happy for the first 20-30 games and then you can see the life be drained out of them by the seemingly endless stack of impossible puzzle/platformer games.
Yeah it depends on how many games there are
In a game jam I was a part of a year ago, a guy just asked for people to tell him to play and stream their games instead of going through the entire list
Which was really helpful in filtering out a lot
I think he played around 70-100 on stream and was very cheerful throughout the most of it
The last Jam I was in, in I think Nov was like 270 entries.
This was the one I joined last time
756 entries wew
sheeeesh
This was our game
I worked with an artist friend of mine and he's very good which helped boost our aesthetic score up a lot
I was originally going to jam with him on this time's spring ue4 jam but he had somewhere to be on short notice so I went ahead and jam'd by myself
I keep wanting to find a team for one of these, but I'm never even sure I want to jam until the last minute and then it's too late.
Ye I'm very thankful to have my friend
I just don't feel comfortable with trying to jam with a team yet.
He's really good at art and I'm mostly interested in programming so we compliment each other perfectly
I need some normal team exp first. I'm constantly soloing everything.
Jamming with friends is a good place to start because as friends you already naturally have some understanding and epxectations of what to expect from each other
As opposed to going in blind with a stranger
Having a common understanding makes work a LOT more efficient
My only friend I have worked with is already in a studio and does freelance on the side. I'm gonna ask me to do the next Jam with me. Because going solo is fine IF you start on time, if you start late (Like I did last time) or you can't work but a few hours a night (Like this time) than you're in for a hurting.
I still can't get the game play proper.
Ye if you wanna do a jam it's usually the best experience if you fully commit
You're already going to be strapped for time, having even less of it is only going to make it worse
We got 8 hours. If I can fix the game play in 4 or even rewrite it in 5, I should make it.
I might just have to cheapen it, and built in an auto function to replace what the player should be doing on their own. (Changing into a house hold object to hide from the AI on the table.)
Yeah if you're running low on time, compromises will sometimes have to be made
I HATE taking away from the player but I also want to get the idea across.
Yeah I see what you mean
There are ways to set things up so that the idea is still conveyed without taking away from the player's control
One of the lazier but still efficient ways, and what I did in my entry this time, was to have tutorial text as part of the world that the player can read while still playing
And also have an applicable scenario right close to it
So that I don't technically "force" them to do anything
But still provide them the opprotunity to learn the mechanic
Mines more Concept-Jam 2018 ๐คฃ
Damn straight!
is there a quick way to light all my levels decently without building light for them all?
i tried switching the directional light to movable but the old ugly shadows are still there
(the only light source is directional)
I always just set everything to dynamic in game jams.
Well sometimes you need to give your objects a little nudge too.
I'm not seeing a way that you can update the lighting without rebuilding it. Still looking tho
Try static lighting
will do, thanks ๐
If i'm understanding you correctly. That will be the fastest rendering times
7 hours, 30 min o go... So lets assume its 3, just to be safe - Wayyyy to little time ๐
Once again, I'm way over with the scope of the game
yeah man this is my first game jam ever lol learned sooooo much tho so far
I calculated my scope just about right, finished one day ahead of schedule
Just in case of emergency
Can we update our itch submissions before deadline?
I finished my game and want to submit, but I want to add more levels and maybe gameplay features.
Okay, good to know, thank you @supple sierra.
dont make more lvls, make ur 1st levels better if ur gunna do anything
90% of entries wil never get played til the end
You should be able to upload new files and take down old ones
If you want to be sure though, give Amanda a ping and ask her
If you use UPX for exe and dlls, unzipped game will be about the size of the zip.
I'm building my first "release candidate"... But I will probably work till last possible minute. I should probably upload something now and update it, just in case my net dies or something. ๐
Well, as long as it's before the deadline I don't see why not
Im not sure if itch allows it.
but update personal information? that would be great to know
oh, shit... I don't have a name for my game
name of a team
I will hope that team mate will wake up in time to give his personal info
Just smash the hand on the keybord. What ever the output is, add a vowel and you have a name
Ohudepu as example
Damn. I already came up with stupidest name possible.
Should use keyboard smash method.
Team name doesn't matter. But game name can be pretty useful. Especially now, that they are all on itch.
so who here pulled an all-nighter? โ
Not me. With a 3.5 month old baby and day job, I decided to throw the white towel and just work it out to a mini game the coming days
I slowed my roll but I'm still grinding.
I'm sorry to say I'm throwing in the towel. Gotta go help my Dad in 1 hour, and won't be back in time.
It sucks so bad to not met a deadline but that's the risk we all take. And honestly I'm not even that down about it. Because I have a basis for a decently fun and interesting game I can expand on later if I want to revisit it. To everyone that already submitted my hats off to you. And to everyone still whipping it 'til ya bones collapse. I'm rooting for you!!
how much time left until deadline?
just under 5h
Oh damnnnn ! starting the first build soon, but some things still need to be implemented ๐ฎ
oh so i did all my meth math correctly
my first gamejam in a team... and teamplay is really the hardest thing about getting a thing finished. I feel bad, but the level designer just didn't do a great job, so i have to build the main level now last minute.... but i feel kind of wrong for deleting some of his stuff... maybe my expactations are too high or I'm ashamed of my lack in communication skills ... ๐ฆ
It took me some time to submit the game. Well, it is possible to rush it, but it is not done in 3 minutes.
Just wanted to share my team's submission:
https://youtu.be/KhSYq2tKAR4
Feedback and critique welcome :)
Name: Tronheim Team: JanusLab Link to submission: https://itch.io/jam/2018-spring-ue4jam/rate/257916
Uploaded my game to Itch.io but it won't let me submit anything as my team's thing for some reason
@dusky vessel I had some problems too. Did you make the game public? It won't see the draft and private pages.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqWKzy_D9iU
Here is mine.
Each step changes level orientation in six degrees of freedom. Created in 5 days for the 2018 Spring UE4 Jam: "Transformation". Download: https://nyashka.itc...
lol i had 5 mins for the goal being achieved
and i did it in under 3 mins
gotta update timer
how do you make a video of your game?
I use shadowplay
I use OBS.
Oh I have OBS nice
But when I click start recording, it doesnt save my videos lol
no clue why
nvm fixed it
Yea, anything to cap your screen is the best bet, OBS, Shadowplay, FRAPS, etc
Guys does Unreal allow late submission at least 30 minutes late just in case the build takes a longer time
We need to zip up the build right?
deadline = deadline
It still exists?
can OBS cut parts out of a movie?
I use it for recording only. I'd just cut with ffmpeg. Isn't especially convenient, but I don't do a lot of video editing. I binded OBS toggle shortcut to Scroll Lock, so, videos usually timed as needed.
you could always do video editting with Blender
hey guys, can I edit the stuff after i've submitted? forgot to list a preexisting asset
not when the deadline passed
has the deadline passed? thought it was a couple more hours
Yes, it is possible.
1hour and 46min left
Go to your jem page (url like: https://itch.io/jam/2018-spring-ue4jam/rate/258006 ), there is blue button:
https://i.imgur.com/gq5FJTj.png
I slowly edit this page myself.
It is possible to reupload the game also.
ah, thanks!
Is it just me that thinks its weird handing out expensive prizes to finalists when there is no way to check if they cheated?
Couldn't get file size under 100MB ๐ฉ
@stable kiln thats been my thought with every jam ๐
spend 3 months on it and just package before the deadline
a few SSds in a raffle for every entry is fun but this makes no sense
pfff.. I'm done.
Still, something like 10 things I need to fix.. but I can't be bothered anymore
@stable kiln then even still, nothing prevents you from buying stuff from the marketplace and use it in the jam. Winning entries did it before
yea but some entries that shouldnt have been valid have won B4 aswel
Well, I used marketplace content this time for the first time.
๐
Almost all my assets.
But I worked solo.
@tepid light That looks like Earth bending so that's awesome. And over all it looks like a top down free style angry birds'ish controls. All in all it looks fun!
would be nice if the entries would be 'validated' and cheaters get a life-time ban from joining jams
It would be nice. sure.
Dat crunch: https://tommyzhanj.itch.io/pleinair
to avoid massive work, just validate the potential winners
but how would you validate them?
well, they send you the message "You won! Send us the project source files to validate"
if cought cheating, move to the next place
Last time someone made a VR game and they had dev logs on youtube from 3 months back working on it ;P
well, if you put it in the content disclosure, its within rules
I seriously doubt they would have time to validate an entry like that.. It would take more time then it is worth it
you could work on something for 3 months and then port it to the new project or something
no way of checking when something was made.
files have creation date and modify date
only thing they can rly do is just kick stuff that doesn't stick to the theme.
yea but u can import fbx
even the creator of a file can be easily traced
and copy paste BPs
yea true, but if you want to go that deep in cheating, you earn a kings seat in hell ๐
^
just sayin the honor system wont work verry well when 2k$ laptops are involved
Still, someone could memorize whole game and just place nodes from muscle memory.
@west wing if you can do that, by all means, please take first place
this is kinda called practice tho ๐
generally speaking the winners should fit the theme, so it should be difficult to win by trying to mash an existing game into the theme
it usually shows
But winners don't always do that
theme usually doesnt count as heavy as lookin good
There is a cateogry for theme, visuals and gameplay. and they all should fit the theme... but they often dont
some themes can be interpeted generic, like transformation (its fits like 80% of all games where something transforms)
also.. for the theme like transformation... everything can fit in some way
I would suggest that's a flaw in the judging criteria; matching the theme well should be essential to even be considered a winner
"I'm transforming enemies from alive to dead!" or "From humans to a pile of ash" ๐
and boom, any shooter fits
The effort of deep code cheating, VS putting up a long time project and just showing how you implemented the random theme. Just showing how you adapted the theme into it would do you way more good.
"Im transforming my ammo count from 30 to 29 by pressing MainFire"
yeah. That would be great. theme above all
There probably jams with more restrictions. Working in some event hall on-site while being watched, using defined low-level toolset, etc.
The problem isn't IMO using a complete game. Even creating a "template" with FPS movement, AI, menus, saves, anim bp, etc.
this can save like a week of work
and people do that. And even sell that on the marketplace
When a game Jam looks and feels like a Pokemon card tournament. XD
anyway... I need to eat ๐ Super tired. But it was fun working on this jam.
I used framework myself.
I don't think my game is super fun compared to others I made - As usual it suffers from last of balance
but it was a lot of fun making it.
Without it, I would just spend whole 5 days doing it.
I made some super cool stuff but no1 wil ever see it ๐
Prizes are nice, but to me the Jams are just personal challenges.
I don't use anything like that. The only thing I had "premade": I have marketplace content downloaded and sorted. But thats fall all projects. not this specific one.
Sure, its a personal challange. And making a game is the best part.. but winning is also very rewarding.
when people appreciate your work and effort.
@dense sleet for me, it was general interest in jamming, since I never participated before.
I hope that some times a "Unreal Epic Month Jam" comes along, so people with less free time on their hands can make something nice too ๐
There are different jams going constantly, check itch jams page.
This was my second one. Last one was the last of 2017s. That was literally no sleep for 2 days XD because I goofed on the start date.
Yeah, that woudn;t work for me..
filesize ended 3 gig and kinda needed 12 more hours to finish it
but it looked freakin awwsome ๐
There are probably some long-therm too.
Yeah, Next time I need to make it a hard rule: Last day is only for polish and bug fixes, no new content.
I didn't even have a complete game 4h ago
@west wing I know, every month I look around, but so far I've only done Epic Jams. The others feel like a stranger saying hi to me (STRANGER DANGER!)
Plus, UE4Jams have cool rewards ๐
That too, and seeing what other people made that you speak in here is cool too
Making you watch the Playtrough stream
Check out Virtus Dev Squad's discord they run Jam's with decent prizes and partnerships from Epic.
well too bad, this game would have blown gameymcgameface out of the water in terms of weirdness
@tepid light I planned to make quick mechanic, and polish it for the rest.
@dense sleet thanks for the tip, I've joined it for the next one
just submitted. woo what a weekend
It was a big miscalculation.
Just wanted to check that we just upload our game to itch.io right? Is there any check box or anything we need to check?
Upload, make public and fill submit form on jam page.
k grt
If everything is correct, it will show in entries immediately.
Well good luck to ALL. And I'll definitely be back for the next Jam. And bringing so much more with me, like the source code and better prepping for sure.
I look forward to seeing everyone's work during the live stream!
GoodLuck Everyone!!! โค
Hope to see more jamming tools in future. For example, I doubt it is possible for developer to learn about Houdini 3 weeks before the jam (from announce page) and use it somehow. But if it had some rapid level-generation toolset, it would be quite a different story.
I should probably release my own toolkit somewhere, to contribute to the idea.
Finally submitted our jam project! 8 am here in Tahiti... one more sleepless night... time to go to bed ๐ด
btw, here's our gameplay trailer, hope you'll like it ๐
https://youtu.be/ecmMNWF9wDs
Play as the Bird God and switch between his multiple forms to defeat the darkness. Survive 3 waves of enemies and kill the boss to win. You can download it h...
@sand edge just watched it. Awesome!
Thanks a lot @west wing
We put a secret spot in the game where you can trigger alternative "transformed" sound effects ๐
45 minutes!
Use Bitbucket with its provided git lfs during jam
Slowly fill lfs storage without realizing
1h before jam ends LFS storage is full, no more pushes
Activate panic mode
i couldnt finish, half a day short
Friend helped me find some improvements that could be made
Finished uploading 30 minutes before final deadline wew
Got some decent improvements in!
I became lazy after upload. Planned to add features (make better buttons), but didn't move a finger after that. Upload late, people!
have to package it too
Packaging and screenshots and video took a while but I am done/
Go snap some random pictures at least D:
Submitting took me ~2 hours, but for the first time it's ok, I suppose.
Same about 2h to submit
oke
But this includes two last second bugs
how to access highres screenshots?
Me too. I forgot to unbypass savegame.
In the game's saved folder
take another screenshot and click on the link to the folder in the bottom right
It's Project/Saved/Screenshots/Windows/ for me.
Looks sexy.
i have only 2 pics
i love that cloud DitherTemporalAA effect
haha its 91mb
I submitted game, im at its page rn so its all i have to do?
but i still have "Submit Your Project" thing on jam page
Once you have a game page up
Go back to Submit at the Game Jam page
It will now display your game to be allowed for submission
Now fill in the fields and you should be good!
It's ten minutes left.
where do i add screenshots?
Game page edit
and i can edit it after submitting to jam
aw i feel so good pressing Submit button
Niiicee
https://itch.io/jam/2018-spring-ue4jam/feed
Don't see it there.
and when you edit the game itself where do i add screenshots? xd
oh nvm
on the right
Ah, it's "Dried Out". No cover.
Yep, I see the cover now.
i almost forgot about submitting while playing fortnite xd
good that i looked at time
People still submitting. It must be stressful to submit 5 days of work in last 5 minutes. Especially when a large scary form with a lot of mandatory fields appear.
i would estimate my time spent on this is about 7-8 hrs
The last minute
novel incoming from Glunder...
30 seconds!
Time is up! Good luck everyone!
i doubt that 30 secs is enough to do all that form
165 total
just in time :D
lol was 111 10 mins ago
I hope all of you jamming have taken a shower. Smells like wet socks in here !
i bet someone was like 5 seconds late to finish the submission form, would be so sad
Submitted by ... with 25 seconds before the deadline
if someone submitted 1 second before deadline hes a real man
So does anyone know when the winners will be announced?
did i manage to submit or not ? ๐
@marsh oxide have a look at the submission feed
ok so i have to go ๐ฆ
I submit my game. It's called "Submit 1 minute late Emulator". It seems there are no bugs on release. ยฌ_ยฌ
is it possible that i deleted my submission for the jam?
i have pressed something, I havent seen it because it was grey on grey and now I cant find it in the submissions
its my 2nd game that i finished
i feel good
and now peace im out
cuz gtg
๐
well, i submitted in the last minute, maybe i was too late ... thou no error or nothing
Rest well peeps!
i submitted like five minutes before it ended, but I think i deleted it :/ well fail xD
I'd at least compute hash sum on the archive I planned to submit and publish it online.
I doubt it will work, though.
But if I hosted a jam, I'd allow such submissions.
I spent 3 hours at troubleshooting engine and windows sdk and I got Error_UnknownCookFailure again ๐ก
(โฏยฐโกยฐ๏ผโฏ๏ธต โปโโป
Plugins?
Nope
Try to clean project directory.
Leaving only .uproject file, content and config folders.
yeah ... i can not see my submission ๐ฆ
It's late here so I'll try and play everyone's games tomorrow ๐
tried to go "story" driven this time, have to try new things at the end of the day!
At least someone did it.
Pew pew pew
nice animation
So do we just give you the VR award now?
My teams submission:

Are we allowed to edit our download page after the cut off?
Could anyone please check if he can find a submission with the Name "Shapeformer"?
can't see it
@proven badge Which submission is yours? I wanna try that game out for sure ๐
https://david-gamedev.itch.io/shapeformer
It was only uploaded to itch.
:/ well, guess I am out, thanks anyways :/
@supple sierra https://slapunas.itch.io/riseofthebotsvr
๐
@spice flame it is really confusing if you didn't submit for a jam before
bear in mind, it's designed for 2 players
the thing is, I did already one i think. But I acutally hit submit on the uejam page, and submitted the game, then I clicked something, and it was gone
you'll need a partner mate ๐
@spice flame I don't think it's too late. Just don't change anything and contact someone.
@west wing who can we contact ? i don't see my submission too
Dunno. Maybe @copper carbon can answer this?
I'm done with trying for jams. Each and every time I either don't get a team or I have other stuff crop up making the 5 days go down to 1 day or both. Had to leave the jam because all I managed to get done in the time I had left after crises in RL was one room. That I couldn't even get to launch on my phone thanks to subpar development equipment
I had positive experience. Almost regret I didn't participate earlier.
here our entry
sadly is not really completed we rushed on level design
on last day ^^'
and incidently left one placeholder ;p
Me too. But I had, like, 3 objects to arrange, so, I was able to make 5 levels.
but atl;east is better then our entry in megajam imo
thats better then us
we only abled to pull 2 ssections
its quite short
Somebody gonan do entry stream :>
?
entry showcase stream?
here our entry https://twitter.com/immiddlle/status/996459874732175360?s=20
Submitted our Spring #ue4jam entry, GOO GO! https://t.co/ceVE67XdFz feel free to play it, models made by @mazar_3d not sure how hard is the puzzles feedback is appreciated. #ue4 #gamedev
I even included the great unbaked lightning info for everyone to know in ๐
spend too much time on asset design so couldnt finish it
that transform button would blow ur mind tho ๐
searching for a team was a great decision. So fun that you can do a lot more with a team
ya i regret trying to solo this one, not enough time to art and code
I actually enjoyed doing solo.
Working out really nice when you know a bit of everything.
I couldn't get a team going. I signed up for the crowdforge thing and while I was at work, two people joined then left after not getting a response from me. Then someone else joined later on, but never spoke or responded. So ... I ended up being entirely on my own. I know some of most of the steps, but not enough of any of them to go fully on my own. I tried on my own anyway, hoping I'd have enough time after losing three days to a Boy Scout trip with my son and Mother's Day, lol.
Then yesterday ended up being out most of the day as well, so I ended up with about 1.25 days to get something done. I'm lucky I got a room done, lol. Didn't get to any coding and didn't even get to see if I got the scale right in my Gear VR (couldn't get it to launch from my laptop)
IF no body gonna do showcase stream... i gonna try doing onwe tommorow... im to tired right now to start it :p
i got fasts internet so for me downloading entries should be fast
Pretty much, yes
@rapid musk you got to advertise your team searching thing
I found my team there
also if you understand what people you actually need helps
I did advertise as much as I could. Posted on Facebook and Twitter and got retweeted by (presumably) a bot or two, lol. Guess I should've posted here as well?
Either way, it didn't work out for me very well. Maybe it will next time, but for right now, I'm just licking my wounds and trying not to get too bummed about failing on the jam. Need to focus on the fact that I did get something done, even if it wasn't submission-worthy
Our trailer didn't make it in time, but here it finally is:
V2701 was created by 3 Developers in 5 Days for the 2018 Spring #ue4jam Download at https://apprenticek.itch.io/v2701- Music: MOOSE by https://www.bensound.c...
https://gfycat.com/RespectfulFlatHarborporpoise BRiiiiiiing... damn this ended up lookin so smooth
Hell yeah, finally all forum posts are done and now i can enjoy the jam afterparty ๐
yeah, sleep is a good idea now ๐
hell yeah. ๐
we submitted just 8 minutes before the deadline, the last upload % took sooo damn long. rly scary ^^
I was packaging at last hour. took so long. it was really scary
need some McDonalds tonight to calm down
Wait a minute - I was supposed to make a forum post like in the old jams along with the itchio submission?!
I don't think so, that wasn't even necessary last time. As long as you filled out the submission form, it's good.
@dusky vessel nah - some people just like sharing there ๐
@Amanda Bott#4365 We can continue to spice up our download page right?
Absolutely!
hey is it too late to start
Can we rate the games or is rating limited to unreal staff? I can't find any button ๐ฎ
Ok I got some sleep
Gg people
I like jamming
Heh I got a comment on my game, for the first time ( อกยฐ อส อกยฐ)
And I felt good reading it
any playthrough streams yet?
I think you should ping @epic staff oh wait it isn't mentionable
Its disabled to avoid spam
then ping all of epic staff manually ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
just dont tell them that i suggested this
Ok no body doing it so i try to do it :p starting UE4 GameJam entry showcase stream, i will be playing in submission chronolectal order https://www.twitch.tv/shadowriver
๐
@gaunt copper Not sure if you got to CastleDayโs WarHill yet but give me a heads up before you log in and I will get on too!
@gaunt copper I don't think it is necessary to search for latest version in feed, since links lead to the same page with most recent release.
To those who played games: Anything worth playing / any recommendations?
quite surprisingly a ball game
Ball games do pretty well actually @robust basalt , not sure if y'all remember the soccer game, where you turn into the soccer ball itself?
ya, remember that
@robust basalt You have a link to this new one?
damn, there are a lot of games this time around
@rigid fog https://tylercowan.itch.io/skyward
oh ya, that one
ball rolling game
Grr, wish I had time to have participated in this one
Ah, that's nice
Kept it simple
super polished and well designed
Oh, you transform the ball to get through the course
Yeah, it's super simple concepts that usually do well
They have the time to just grind polish
@glass fossil ty btw
@gaunt copper Hey I watched your play-through of my jam entry, the one with the girl and fire and the dinosaur. If you make your camera stick out to the side instead of have it behind you all the time, the platforming is much easier!
Thank you for playing it though!
SkyWard is the one of the best games this jam has.
I should have some extra free time this weekend, so if anyone wants me to play their entry, either ping me with what it is or DM it to me. I'll try and leave my thoughts in the comments after playing!
@compact cedar Did you participate? link?
@rigid fog yeah, but screwed, again... https://shadowriverue4.itch.io/enter-the-zone
@rigid fog also, look at the comment section https://itch.io/jam/2018-spring-ue4jam/rate/258204
i'm trying to fix all of it, hope @gaunt copper will assist me (i have no clue how the logic work, it is in cpp)
