we are gucci
nice!
@robust basalt what you doin?
@robust basalt I woulda helped playtest, but no time sorry
mine is XD
the starter part has no enemies, then there is a broad combat arena, and then a jumping section, and then the final section wich is labyrinthian + enemies
I didn't manage to sort out the issues I had with the last two maps I made today and yesterday evening, so ended up packaging with two short puzzles only ๐
at least it shows the idea
Omg been getting a critical error on the packaging for the last 20 min
thats couse you dont have care
look at the time of builds
there are around 5-6 builds on the perforce repo
i know that builds failing last minute is common, so build soon
nothing changed - just the childactorcomponent decided to die ๐
half the commits are yesterday and today
and i did some stuff day 2 and forgot about it till d ay 5
I've never had builds fail in Unity. Didn't realize this is a common thing with UE4.
There is still plenty of time to submit
10 minutes
@granite schooner builds are much more complicated in unreal
it needs to compile and link the code, and the packager is much more optimized
games with no code require no compilation
Its taking 20 minutes per build with each thing i try, Idk if rebuilding the binaries fixed or not, I started trying to package it an hour ago.
@austere swift guys - you're working at daytime? what's wrong? ๐
packaging for our game took about 45 seconds, hehe
@viscid oriolenoh#8652 as ive said, i know i wont win, and i knew from day1
so i just did it very chill
I'm not expecting to win at all
but go hard or go home
I slept for 2 hours this morning xD
i just used the project to change the stuff i do a bit
i also used it to overuse houdini to try to do everything procedurall
and worked for 23 hours prior to that, hahaha
wasn't serous about it - im just happy - our first submission on a jam ๐
too bad my killer "big" door was lkost
learned a lot
500 seconds
can I ask what this game jam thing is?
@quasi girder Yeah same here, never took the time to actually finish and submit a jam game before, great feel just having done that ๐
@robust basalt wow
aye! but I'm so looking forward to the weekend
i've assumed it will be strategy...but this is...wow
VERY nice art
ugly as hell HUD but thats to be expected
but the 3d art is definitely shippable level
with a better hud that can be released in steam as-ish
Just fixed and re-submitted my team's build with a few minutes to spare. Couple of game-breaking bugs we didn't know about. Feels great now but not so much about 20 minutes ago
@jovial thistle but finally - you did it - that's all what counts
@robust basalt is it even possible to make ALL this in a week? are you guys some kind of robots?
๐
Well its the spine runtime plugin that i didn't use thats causing issues b/c it was meant for 4.17 instead of 4.18 apparently even though their repo said otherwise... Hopefully it packages now.
@robust basalt how big was the team?
5\
@austere swift it's always the same
@quasi girder Exactly. Now I can finally get back to homework'
i've barely finished the levels ;_;
it was a nightmare...my brain is potato now....potato nightmare
recorded 70'ish hours gamedeving
not sure if I can get this into a timelapse
@austere swift 5
2 programmers, 2 artists and a music/sound guy
well, balanced team
....and time's up!
but i wouldnt ever put 2 programmers
well...
breathes sigh of relief
programmers tend to step on each other
that was a fucking close one
often, 1 programmer for such a small team works better
I really only need like 5 more minues
unless there is perfect sync
just submited
you can easily have two programmers
it's called version control and organisation :p
organisation and version control on a rushed gamejam isnt something easy XD
just communication
I beg to differ, so long as you're communicative and have working version control you're usually fine
and breaking a lot of stuf the other programmer made all the time ๐
previous jam had four technically orientated people and there was very little stepping on toes
Well, expectations are a big thing also
If you tell someone you are going to be on all weekend and do a lot of stuff, but then don't put out much or anything worthwhile.... that just sucks.
However, if there are no expectations beforehand
@robust basalt where is the download link??
As in, team didn't communicate beforehand
https://gfycat.com/gifs/detail/RespectfulRealisticGallinule
here have a cute baby potato ๐
Submitted just in time, finally rest
Am I happy to be finished
Finally sleep again
< slept 4hrs today.... @acoustic crater probably haven't at all
I slept 6-8 hours every day
that's the key
and alooot of coffee, ofc
and energy drink
s
I slept less than 3 every day of the jam... now that I think about it, not much less compared to normally, though that's probably not a good thing
@robust basalt well, we have only me as an artist/designer for last two days...so
i am going on 0 sleep, and have had my vive on for a week straight more or less. i feel funny
I had two hours sleep this morning, and worked for 23 hours the day before (took the day off work) D:
also, this is how we communicate: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/329558052023959575/377433442159296513/unknown.png
LOL
I didn't have time for so many things I wanted to do, including making a gameplay video
@abstract zephyr Those zombies reminded me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBRxM5yq2NU lol
So probably gonna do some more things on my project just to feel like it's complete
not hots or no thots...
@compact cedar I think we are working on the forum submission thing
not sure if it's up yet
Oh. Just figured out. This game jam we made ALL the assets ourselves.
I had to use some post process effects that were made for previous jams
because we did 90% of the vfx in the last 2 hours
wow, i just used some packs i had lying around for the hit soudn
@robust basalt who's your composer?
you can send me gameplay videos later
do you guys know roughly how many submissions you got? ๐
142
42, since it's the answer to everything (and to live, the universe, and those crap things)
my guess is around ... 80?
higher
around 150?
higher ๐
480
250?!
that'd be cray cray
192
I have 280 submissions listed - not sure how many are dupes though
wow
๐ฎ
That's way more than I expected
yeah no kidding
was hoping for 200+
that will be a crazy week of gameplays!!!
summer jam was 130
there was hardly 300 people watching streeam

@robust basalt you've all changed your avatars? =))
actually @dull basin made them before the jam, and that heavily inspired the game ๐

@proven badge i was wrong ;_;
@compact cedar did you actually jam this time?
Just made a reply on the GameJam game thread ๐
It was great doing a jam in unreal. ๐
@robust basalt yep
whats your game?
oh, you worked with shadowdriver?
Yep
I don't know the guy, but he's an answerhub machine
yeah...but kinda lives in own world ๐
๐
the arrws ends in the middle of the map
@copper carbon I forgot to disclose that I used Mixamo animations, can I edit my submission? (just the text)
@robust basalt how to get vodka?
build the distillery
behind the gate
pretty sure we are doing a terrible job of communicating it
not sure if the outline made it into final version
@robust basalt hmm...and how to do that? ๐
UI is nice
oh fu
everything has a highlight except distillery circle, so i thought it's kinda absent for first few levels ๐
yeah, we had a basic building with outline that you started upgrading from
not sure why it is gone in the final build
with no replacement

Anyone doing playthru stream?
if i did one of my game you would blink and miss it

@proud palmZhanj#0641 this game is great!
okay @sullen mauve , you've just tagged wrong person...

@storm blade what project? I'll update our spreadsheet.
Great job everyone!
we had 279 submissions โค
biggest jam EVER
ue4jam*
@copper carbon I just sent you a message on the forums with the details
ok cool - that works
thanks
We won't be getting the submissions list until tomorrow at the earliest
So no stream until I can actually get the links
ah ok ๐
yeah
they need a slightly more efficient way of handling this
But it was a great effort
download everything and go ๐
@gaunt copper I'm supposed to press E on this dude right? https://gyazo.com/500f55939f3c5b05d8760ae9cd005d85
keep everything in order of that list
@copper carbon Perhaps getting your tech guys to feed in the URLs to a Google sheet next time on submission if that's even possible?
Or via firebase
@proud palmZhanj#0641 this creature requires 5 "crystals" on the top left to be posessed ( @gaunt copper am i right? )
@copper carbon doubt it. I mean, instead of Google Forms, have it hosted on your servers.
But, you never know. perhaps there is a way to funnel info into firebase from forms. or to sheets.
we have some other form software, but I didn't get up to speed on it in time. And the form seemed to work?
But might require a custom solution
@copper carbon i could make you a web app for jams (if i'll have time for that -_- )
I'm so excited
Except the message on the google form we were not supposed to receive anything else to confirm submission riiiight?
@copper carbon to play all of them?
having a post panic attack ๐
aww, sorry! I'll make sure it sends an email next time
I try to collect as little info as possible, since some folks don't like sharing
@Horia#3356 i almost got an brain attack in last two hours of jam
So, you guys confirm, no mail confirmation. Just that screen?
with the "go sleep!!!"
@proven badge pwahahaah
jesus chirst it was har d ::D
@proven badge i'm still not sure if our is...since i've made a lot of changes in the levels
you know a funny thing
I was the one who balanced it ๐
pulled the math out of my arse in last 2 hours
nevermind, using the seearch revealed the answer. Sorry about that. Same questions over and over. Keywords are... key.
so it was hectic, but damn ๐ actually quite close to being proeprly balanced ๐
@proven badge imo game has pretty steep start...i still can't figure how to get enough of vodka to build AA weapons
how many waves have you beaten?
@proven badge well, until first AA =)))
more important question
many times
1 turret holds that wave ๐
the wiggles and the wobbles?
funnt enough, allshar left a bug in vodka economy ๐
could not build your turret ๐
@proven badge what turret? turrets are not AA
will do another run, will try to win with it ๐
potato turret is upgradable to AA for 30 patotoes i think
@proven badge oh...dumb F...i should properly read all the upgrade descriptions
getting past wave 21 is the real trick tho
tower defence not my genre ๐
woot
so, who's going to stream all the games?
@rigid fog nudge nudge
Should've started our team name with "A" so people would play ours first
...
Can I do this now? Man, I was pumped right after submission... oh brain...
Brain was winding down for sleepy times
It misses those sexy dreams...
Pump
@rigid fog
fudge
okay fine
I'll try
let's see how how this goes with barely 5 hours of sleep in the past few days
i think most people who jammed are in a similar state ๐
I can't imagine staying up to keep doing work. At some point, your brain just goes dead
meh
you would be surprised what your body can handle and do
Anyway, time to see all these fantastic games
Plase retweet
I'll be starting the playthru of all 279?!?! #ue4jam submissions at approx 7PM EST. https://t.co/c4GUotQ97C @UnrealEngine @UnrealAlexander @amandambott @iveytron #gamedev #indiedev #videogames #gamejam #ue4 #gameart #programming #indie #game #IWantedToSleepButThatCrapIsntHappenin
Are you going in order of the list in the thread?
no idea
I suppose if you bribed me, I might play your game first
But otherwise, dealer's choice
BTW, the grump is loose
@rigid fog it is barely noticeable
279 entries!!! Inconceivable!

lol @copper carbon oops
yeah
just looked through the thread.. some realy nice stuff.. GG everyone
that yellow skeli loks real happy to see the white skeli.. or is that a bone in his pocket?
Lol
I really liked the people who I did my jam with. I just wish that the designer hadn't been dragging his feet so much and that the scope of the project had been smaller so that I didn't waste a day making a feature that we couldn't use in the end.
Bad feelings
All good, most teams probably had at least one wasted day
whomever made filament.... GG i have to work, but I cant stop playing it ๐
I had 2 wasted days
Maybe 3
Cuz of school
And of me doing nothing and playing warframe
Aw damn I won't be awake
Where can I find the list of entries? I don't even know if my team leader guy actually submitted our piece of crap
woot our piece of crap is there
I like how it just links to the games, but doesn't include the "how to play" bit we had to fill out. Since I didn't put "VR" in the title of my project, there'll probably be at least someone who downloads it and thinks "this doesnt work" without realising it's meant for VR
damn that is a lot of games
@hearty ferry While my team's project wasn't VR, it definitely needs people to know controls. Do you think a forum post in the MegaJam thread would help alleviate the issue?
Possibly, yeah
I'm wondering if it would be considered cheating if I reuploaded my projects zip file but with added readme explaining the controls?
I was literally typing the same thing
But I was just going with adding a README inside of the download link folder without having to re-upload
I uploaded to my own site and linked directly to the zip, so can't add it to the page, just to the zip
Ah that makes sense
Okay
Body needed more than 5 hours of sleep
Be live in about 20 mins
well
Well I guess I 'll just go live in a bit
@rigid fog i found some games got updated...today
lol
I want to upload an update for ours
but that's not going to happen anytime soon. so w/e, but my original submission will stay there
@rigid fog same as me, seems at last release our programmers lost some of the meshes i've used in levels -_-
...back to normal after a good 16 hour sleep crash ๐
don't know how people post progress updates on the gamejam, hard to find time to do that part and worry about getting the game done..lol
@visual hare iirc Dannie said he recorded 70hrs of gamedev footage
Wow
dang
I'm with @visual hare, only had time to worry about getting something done at all ^^
@compact cedar you had really solid bloopers ๐
@rigid fog Seems you only have evidence of this game existed: 3DVirtualand - 3DVirtualand_DarknessAttackGame
@rigid fog link is unavailable now
@copper carbon
Is it allowed to change the project title?
The problem is that my game is a VR game, but before you start the game there is no chance of recognizing that unless you see the video ๐
got my 20h sleep after Jam I think Im fit again x)
So everyone got trough to the Deadline?
It is listed as KoniBrothers-LightTheDarkness
That much sleep gave me slight headache ^^
but Im fine
Oww =/ Im off the weekly Karma list. Got to fix that asap
I know, I didn't get to butcher your name yesterday ;P
T^T
@rigid fog just a heads up, not sure if you have a vive/rift but our game "Lattasoft - Escape the Dark" is a VR game if you want to play through it ๐ thanks !
Im bit anxious about my submission now
playtesting shows some people are having hard time grasping that character must actually face the wall in order to spray on it
I hope judges figure it out
hahaha...there was a game with AZERTY keyboard layout...
hw-what
I don't think I've ever seen azerty keyboard being sold anywhere
I know it exists
I think there's like 5 qwerty variations across the europe
mostly similar layout
but say, mine differs from US layout that there's <|> on the left side of Z
Still streaming: https://go.twitch.tv/victorburgosgames
@cedar spindle playing your game now
@uneven basin can relate. it took me 3 hours to beat my own game ๐ I think average tester has no hope
I feel bad for the poor sap who ends up playing my team's thing
@rigid fog you Probably need Instructions for our Game since we never found the time to actually Guide the Player to our mechanics :D I tell Shadow to Update the Forum post with a bit of Instructions otherwise its very confusing
okay...so, we submitted a broken game...
Broken. Nah. Confusin yeah :D
just skipped through the twitch.. some nice games! no vr yet. I was hoping to see how that works out. most of us didn't say VR in our titles, and vr is pretty broken if you don't know to put on a hmd ๐
@acoustic crater so, 8th crystal issue doesn't persist?
oh that one yeah. Thats broken I guess xD
SO FREAKING COLD
Who wants to get out of bed to play gamejam submissions?! !?! ๐
Be on in about an hour. Need to eat and drink my coffee.
@rigid fog thanks dude. I'm going to bed now.. will watch tomorrow.. good luck

anyway.. thanks for taking the time to play... ๐ฆ
@VictorBurgos#7534 any time you were playinjg my game, i want to see you blasting it
@rigid fog I just watched you play my game, Woods Of Blah, wish I'd been in chat. You didn't stick to the roads at all, there were 6 characters and they each had a quest to find 6 different items... It's also completable. I guess I could have made the map smaller and more linearly funnel the players through the content but I thought having extra space with some easter eggs would be more exciting.
I'm just sad you didn't get to see any of the writing or dialogue : / I put a lot of personality into each character.
@granite schooner I know that feeling bro. Been there myself. Honestly treat it as learning experience. Victor is a good representation of a what a normal player would do. If he gets bored and can't be asked enough to explore, most of the players won't either.
Treat it as level design experience, maybe your game lacks the incentives for people to keep exploring (or keeping to the road). You have to anticipate players will not always play the game its intended and not the way you wanted.
In Victors case, he deviated from the road (because it was straight path, instead of zig zag which to him maybe felt pointless) and from his perpsective it was a boring walking simulator.
You probobly could have indicated that with character having a line of text on his head saying "I should get back on a road" or something similar to indicate that player strayed away from intended game area. Alternatively you could have blocked the path with impasable bushes or something.
I know its heartbreaking to see your game being dismissed because you poured hours of time and consideation into it, but you have to understand plebs don't have your understanging or patience to play it (it's your baby after all).
@proven badge The line of text above his head would have been a good solution, he passed by two more signs in the woods that said "Hey, I thought I told you to stick to the roads!" but I guess the ! above the head isn't enough of an indicator that something is interactable that you just walked by. Should have had like a sound effect or made it glowing I guess.
believe me when I say that I am genuiely afraid most people won't understand my game and give up 2 min in (every jam)
and I am always genuinely trying to simplify it every time and give incentives to ensure that most people (even most game illetarate people i can think off) could play it ๐
good practice is to give it to your mom / grandmother and wacth her play wiht 0 guidance. Literally say nothing, see how they interact
And adjust your design accordingly
Its hard to say nothing when you watch someone play your game ๐
take it as a lesson and include (what you want to say) as part of the UI or tips in gameplay ๐
average tester kinda has less than 2 min atention span
gotta really toss content in their face too keep em interested ๐
Well someone who has been playing jam games for 15 hours straight and is up at 4 am is not your average tester lol.
it is for ppl testing the jamgames ๐
and ppl dont like text in their game, u can write the entire series of GoT and ppl wont care ๐
@granite schooner wrong, a person who tested that much would have even less focus and attention left. You have to really captivate him
Thats exactly what I said.
to be honest he genuinely tries to test more than average
but as in your case he can dismiss the game too quickly because he assumes there is no content
or is it because there are so many games without content ๐ค
"just in for the raffle" submits are way too common
allthou, with little thinking game
you'd figure you can't enter the raffle anymore by just submitting
@proven badge here we go ๐ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEHv3QaJyqI

Oh, so many mentions and PMs
Sorry, took some time to refresh myself before playing more games
Oh shit. You're the guy who's been streaming the game jam games, right?
Nah, you're fine.
My entry's like... In the last 10 cause it's alphabetical.
@Varkie#6431 Hey! Yeah, I think I remember your game, @proven badge brought up a few good points. Pretty much agree with him 100%.
@crisp coyote
I do disagree about the "average" tester part
I would say that most gamers, especially adult ones
Are playing after working hours
Late into the late.
So, I am definitely a good representation of "average" gamer. Of course, it's a bit different because I have varying degrees of "good" that I have played prior to anyone's game.
But if you notice, games that get my attention, usually do pretty quick.
And I'll try to complete them or play for as long as possible before I know I have to move on.
And yes, like Slapanus said, I really do try to play each game objectively, even if I am not feeling it in the very beginning. If not, I would be playing these games 5-15mins each or a similiar set time.
And...if you think that the judges have the time to play each game 1hour+ or roughly the same time as me...
Yeah well, I can't obviously speak for them, but I'm going to doubt they really play to completion or as long as I do.
But who knows, this was probably one of the reasons why they went from monthly to quarterly
So they didn't "lose" so much worktime
@untold forge Hehe, hopefully, I can somehow crank the rest of the game this last stream
We'll see.
You'd have to stream like 100 games, wouldn't you?
@rigid fog ryou sure you can do all games in one strim? ๐
subtle
๐ฆ
@rigid fog requesting the potato nightmare! ๐
I just don't want to rush through them too much either though

sigh, someone submitted a game, they did for another game jam

Can't remember if that's actually written in the rules though

what other jam was during same period?
Celebrating FIVE YEARS of Asylum Jam! A 48 hour game jam in which developers are challenged to create a horror game without negatively stereotyping mental health or the medical profession.

you may notice some serious issues with obscure locations of some checkpoints (like Creatures and key stones)
those should have lights on them but due to bugs - not
How do you guys approach your testers to learn the mechanics of your game?
Should the player be forced into a tutorial?
I'm of the opinion you should never force a tutorial
Teach through gameplay
If your game is complex, then a tutorial may be unavoidable
I mean, this was our starting screen
We actually believed the average gamer would read the instructions below and move the fish to the tutorial level
But it seems, he doesn't want to read anything at all and force the game to start
By hovering over the Play area
What's your tutorial like?
So, by forcing I mean, dont give him a chance to see a Play button and force him to do the tutorial first
Is the tutorial absolutely required to understand how the game works?
Yes
I guess forcing it is fine then
But the player had even trouble starting the game ๐
It's not like tutorials are inherently bad
But if you have the opportunity to teach through gameplay, you should
Because reading all the stuff on the menu screen is already 2 much
People just want to start the game already
Yeah people just want to play
I guess that's why people throw the player into the tutorial first when starting the game
And after doing the tutorial a bool will be checked
So on the start of the game the tutorial will be skipped
But then you need to make sure the settings are correct
Or give an option menu in the tutorial to lower settings if needed
I'm playing your game atm, the Tutorial option doesn't work?
Oh nvm it opens some sort of tutorial area
Yeah I think you need to force a tutorial for your game
Alternatively, make a design that will clearly show what each entitiy does
Without using text that is
@glass fossil Thanks for playing it! โค
Yeah, it seems telling the player how to charge and then using this charge while hovering is not clear
Lesson learned! Thanks again for feedback! ๐
๐
I sure hope the jury will be playing games together ๐ . Our game is a local versus game.
If I updated to ue4.18 then I could make it multi-player, but I used 4.17, that version didn't package with steam for whatever reason

@low carbon do you know, is Epic using nosql dbs or stick with traditional ones for the web? If I'd say started to make a CMS for Epic GameJams, what backend should i use? (MySQL/Mongo/node/php ? Java??)
@rigid fog just had a look at your feedback for our game (Meronikto). Thanks dude. Quite good feedback imo

firebase with node is kinda cool
@uneven basin Seems like pretty similar concepts. Did you ever do more with that jam game?
not really
@dull pendant Hey, no problem. It was a pleasure, sorry I couldn't really "play" your game as it was local MP and at that point in time I was solo. But yeah, art was good!
@compact cedar yo
@copper carbon I'd like this to get relooked at whenever possible: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NvdpVcg7z1uE06IDMDdLx1nScnYXrK9rR6d9jhHmtao/edit#heading=h.8ujzahfgk2p1
I feel like you're moving in the right direction away from the forums and with the submission forms, but still very prone to a lot of human errors. If Epic could create an actual dedicated gamejam site like LudumDare or Itch.io, (or just use Itch.io, but beg them for 1GB+ submissions), I think it'll be awesome. Also, lots of information was still missing from that feedback form that could greatly benefit all. And needs to be public (other than emails obviously)
UE4 Game Jam Feedback By Victor Burgos Regular Jams (Prior to Mega Jam 2015) Prizes Swag bag Twitch/YouTube showreel Badge Blog Entry (?! Thatโs what it says on the posts though, but canโt find any in the Blog section under Games at least, should have a separate section for Game Jam winners thou...
But yeah, anyone else, you are more than welcomed to comment on that feedback I created four months ago.
just looked over it
it is still 90% about prizes
I'd say get rid of all the parts that are about prizes and focus on how to make the jam a better experience for everyone to attract more people.
If we get more people jamming and as a result, more/higher quality games - sponsors and prizes would naturally come along with that.
Aye, that's 4 months old
I haven't done anythign with it since
I'll let everyone else have their say
But tbh
272 submissions
That's pretty good attraction imho
A dedicated site is something I'd like to have and will work towards. Please keep in mind that that team has to prioritize a game jam site against other internal asks.
As far as prizes as such, I do like the idea of breaking them apart, but I wonder if that's better to have smaller one-off contests (not the big jams). If I get wacom on board or something, I don't want to award those to programmers. That doesn't really benefit them.
if I do an art-focused contest, then I know I'm handing them out to artists
or code challenges could get something more specific
etc.
I just threw random stuff in there that made sense to me at the time. ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
While prizes were a major issue back then (still are?), there are other key areas that need improvement
I agree with having a better submission platform tbh
but question is: if someone is already specialized in art, do they need a wacom tablet?
same would go for most software license prizes
Why not do what other "prize contests" have done and offer a "pool of prizes" from which to select? Like old school wheel of fortune.
You get sponsors at the various levels to offer a prize, the winners of each tier pick from those prizes what they want, anything not "selected" is simply recycled into the smaller "jams".
This way, the sposors still get 100% marketing for offers, the participants get a wide(r) selection to pick from, and a feeling of actual choice, and Epic gets to continue to give out the prizes as nice bumps for various community events.
Win-Win-Win.
@uneven basin - that thought has crossed my mind too
@valid atlas - interesting idea. will mull that over.
Aye
3x houdini licenses for me
overlapping easily
But
Software usually can get extensions (added to end of previous sub or whatever)
Also, not every artists can afford or has a Wacom
Like I said, I just threw those together. Please comment on the feedback
The more heads that come together on this the better.
it's not about affording, but usually having proper equipment produces higher quality work, which is then more likely going to win in art-related contest
some marketplace credits could be cool
^
See, good ideas
I know you all have great ideas, so let's hear them. Let's Make #ue4jam Great Again
But seriously, not just on prizes
Submission process, scoring, categories, etc.
I'm nitpicking here, but the section on the rules about what game can contain should be re-phrased
"illegal activity" is very broad term
for example, if i won, i would have no use
why would i need the houdini license if i already have it
@stable kiln - we'd talked about that idea. Need to implement a system in MP to make that possible, but it'd be cool.
@rigid fog heh, I'd be happy to have even one ๐
it's not expensive tho
in reality, I don't have time to learn houdini so going to sub wouldn't make much sense
I hope all the jammers are getting a good rest!
@rigid fog @copper carbon how about fortnite VBucks ๐ as jam prizes
@proven badge only lamas for you

Just watched back the stream where Victor tried to play my game, and I gotta say, it's a shame the submission field where we could fill in instructions wasn't included in the forumpost, he had no idea how to play my game since I hadn't had time to add a tutorial level during the jam week
Still though, he discovered the grow/shrink mechanism (though he didn't use it), good to see someone try and play it with no idea as to the controls and goal, will be very helpful for a next jam

Yeah my bad
Was/am traveling to Sacramento
Just got delayed 6 hours, so catching up with stuff now
And yeah, probably because of all the harassment I was receiving, it's auto-moderating now.
And yeah. I will probably continue playing games without reading instructions
Well, if it's outside of the game itself I mean.
But, tbh, even with it in-game, I'll probably glance over it. So, yeah, it's always a good idea to try to put a small, simple, effective way to let the player learn how to play your games little by little. UX-focused game design is a thing.
If the average human can only process 5-9 "things" at one time.
Then a whole block of text is not going to work.
Maybe storyline elements though it can work.
But effective/intuitive/elegant game design is always the best choice.
But that's just my opinion.
@RiverThomas#7570 hmm, which game was yours...gotta look for it
@hearty ferry
oh, nice. ez name
DarkLight
Succubi in Hats looks very cool
@ashen solstice It was pretty cool. But super hard
Well, without Handkor, there was no way I could have even finished it.
i love the idea and the way it looks. there's a lot of cool stuff coming out of the game jam though. makes me wanna work on games again ^_^
@ashen solstice You should
You can still submit Game Jam entries last I heard... you are just not eligible for prizes. Can @copper carbon confirm?
That would be pretty cool tbh. Seeing one or two Epic Jam Teams.
See how far you all can push the engine.
Let us see how far you can.

Anyway, GPUs should be relatively cheap in the next few weeks

BlackFriday/CyberMonday, Week
Give me money and I'll buy things for you
And send it ๐
You gotta pay shipping tho
@rigid fog wow, that's actually a nice offer...i'm not sure if i'll have funds before the sales, but i'll consider it ๐

Seeing my "game" played by Victor was...ouchy and funny at the same time. Next time I'll change the camera view when answering the stupid phone. (That dialogue system is.. horrible). Thanks for reavealing one (hah) of the important things missing.
So just in case anyone plays "Darkness Calls". Answer the phone but keep your view up, so you have at least some effect.
yeah i agree :p our game is a 2 player game so in the stream it wasn't shown at it's full potential :/
but it was nice to see the game being played by other people
@glass fossil nothing stopping you from making own walkthrough

Our game is also a bit hard to play for most people (it needs a Vive, an Android phone and two players) so we made a short trailer to show of the concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hFJBWcbsAc
Multiple Realities is a VR/AR crossplatform multiplayer game built in a week for the 2017 Epic Mega Jam. Two players need to work together to solve a puzzle....
that looks interesting
@mossy gorge If you get some time, you should do a writeup/blog post on how you accomplished that. I am sure there are plenty of devs who would be interested in that.
@rigid fog I wish, but it was hard enough finding time to join, so don't hold your breath. I don't mind answering questions though if there something specific you would like to know

@minor hornet Glad you love the button sounds for Lantern! I love them too ๐
both the sound and the ui design ๐
clean ๐
i think many of us are suffering from the ue4 megajam burn out ๐ i might be wrong!
I want to do Ludum Dare. Designer & Coder here with 6 jams of experience!
Greetings Devs!
Do you like games? Do you like jam? Well we're hosting a ๐ Big Festive Jam ๐ for the winter holidays.
SpecialEffect
We wanted this jam to be extra special - to do that, we are running a fundraising campaign for SpecialEffect, a charity decided to providing disabled gamers with the tools they need to experience the incredible worlds created by devs like you! We'll also be raffling off a few super rare stickers and steam keys!
I'm new to game dev, I'm not ready for this
One of the best parts about a game jam is that regardless of your ability, you'll most certainly find value in participating. No matter how polished the final demo is, it's something you made and that alone is a commendable achievement for any dev.
I don't have a team!
Don't worry! You can either go solo (groups are way more fun!) or, thanks to CrowdForge, browse our team building site found here: https://crowdforge.io/jams/gdn
I'm sold! Sign me up
Head on over to this link, we'll look forward to seeing your beautiful self ๐ https://itch.io/jam/gamedevnetwork-the-big-festive-game-jam
When is the results livestream? 30th? No info on the game jam page
30th IIRC
Yes - it's the 30th
finally got around to making a quick video showing off my MegaJam submission (I know, almost a month late)
My submission for the Unreal Engine 4 MegaJam gamejam in 2017. A short VR puzzle game, where you have to block the enemies path using lights.
protip for future jams: call your game 00000000000a to be the first to be playtested (@ everybody here) ๐
ohhh interesting - I played mine in order of team name ๐
Heh
You never know. I might go in random order next jam
Dealer's Choice is always the best choice
@mossy gorge Hey just saw your jam project there. I'm assuming you're using the built in session logic to connect the two devices, did this work by default?
I really like the concept
@glass fossil that was quite tricky. We ended up using two completely separate projects: one 4.18 windows project for the VR client and 4.16 Android for the AR client as we used an AR library that had not been updated to newer versions.
So normal networking wasn't an option
That's what I thought
We instead used the message bus
Interface for message buses.
The setupended up being very similar to the McLaren car configurator demo
There's a making of stream on twitch that helped
It's a little lower level than I'm used to, but I believe you went around the online subsystem completely and did your own "replication" in the form of these messagebuses
I will look at that stream, I'd like to know more about this
Correct
Because it's much easier building a framework yourself for different types of hardware instead of relying on the engine being completely agnostic with everything (which I don't think it can)
Using two different engine versions even
How do you ID the other device on the network?
If not using Sessions
we didn't... We just spammed the network with broadcast messages. Not ideal but good enough for a jam game on a local network
One nice side effect was that once the networking was setup you could leave one player running while you iterated the other one as nothing has to be in sync
hey there - should I worry if all of my team mates received a mail for confirming their name/mail - but I haven't? Have you all?
I had the names of some folks, so I didn't send it to everyone.
too soon โข
I got the mail, but was confused as to why
for raffle?
maybe
the submission form probably should have had option for name tho
@copper carbon I'm still wondering because I submitted a google doc with all of our data - so I thought you will have all or nothing - but I think its fine ๐ looking forward to the stream today
Yeah, weโll collect names as part of the submission next time. Was trying to avoid as much personal info as possible but cut too far...
@quasi girder I can double check. Whatโs your team name?
can anyone give me a link to where the stream will be, and what time?
ty sir
really could use some exciting background music for the stream ๐ค

Hey everyone! In this development log I go over my progress for the Epic Mega Jam. I'm very excited for this game jam as this is the first Epic Mega Jam that...
Yeah, sorry for anyone who did a VR entry
Thought my comments/feedback would have been read, but meh.
Next time I'll spam it on all social media until it's burned in
Gg guys, I didn't win anything as I expected xd
dissapoint son
Great work everyone! Really fun to participate in this. Looking forward to the next one!
Other than the VR entry, their picks were pretty spot on
every year it feels like submitting a complete original game is just a waste of time ๐
well, almost
Well
I'll be honest
If you're game looks like poop
95% of the time, it won't be making the cut
No matter how great the gameplay
ue4 gamejam cares mostly about graphics? shocker
i mean it is a huge advert
Aye
apparently the graphics isn't important
?
graphics are absolutely everything in gamedev
graphics means good marketing, good marketing means sales
people dont buy ugly as hell games
even if their gameplay is god tier
unless the gameplay is SO GOOD it balances everything
There's only one game that was good visually, but gameplay was lacking a lot
meanwhile i cant art
And that was @terse current
where is the winner list?
And the Beraau of Happiness
for the raffles
But, Solo Dev cat, had nothing to do with anything but just being a solo dev entry
So, they are of course going to do the most visually appealing/unique one
So many good games.
I'll admit my defeat on single dev category on bureau of happiness even tho I don't feel like it connected to the theme well
It didn't really
Like I just said
It was the visuals/unique look that got it
Which is funny because I thought he should have won last year
I thought it had great gameplay AND visuals
But he didn't ๐ญ
but theme is very important to gamejam
Handkor, Beard Envy, Potato Team are always great contenders
I can always expect at least one of them to win
potato team had some serious work put behind the game
Theme is not important, sorry to burst that bubble
Not sure who lied to you
You can easily see that in the past
And I even wrote it in my GameJam feedback
Plenty of games that win without having any solid theme connection
kinda defeats the point tho
What point?
The point is to make a game in a week
That's the only point that matters
of waiting for the theme to be even announced
Hmm
I don't disagree with you
But I don't fully agree either
Again, Epic has to get something out of this
you could do the gameplay weeks before the jam starts, then just divert the art style towards the theme
They can't do this for "free"
So, they use it as Marketing
And also, as potential money making, if devs continue working on their entries.
@uneven basin That is what Ray the Robot VR did
I still don't get how the hell that got picked
Even WITHOUT knowing that it was invalid @copper carbon ... it wasn't the best VR entry, but of course that's subjective right
it just feels against the whole spirit of jamming, to create something new and cool instead of make-an-ad-in-week marathon
Hmm
I got into a fight today with Global Game Jam
about "spirit of the jam"
Again, that's subjective
Their take on "spirit" is that the collaboration should be physical
GDN channel?
@globalgamejam How to handle remote devs for #ggj18 team signups?
So basically.
I will probably end up just creating a physical location
For just me
And get remote devs
@rigid fog - we're going to look into the VR situation
And we judge our games based on fun, graphics, and theme. They're all considered.
Maybe in the future, I'll give you a list of potential invalids
And you can look into them before the stream, to avoid situations like today
Or just a link to my spreadsheet, which I thought you had
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
yea, there's always shady submissions in megajams for the sake of raffles
