Magezerker
Hahah.
for real though I dont know if there are any words that express that meaning except berserker
if there are I dont know them
Yeah, I may just be remembering something different.
I keep coming back to that.
That's what it usually is in fantasy games and such.
Berserker, rage mechanic, etc.
which is weird though cause there totally should be
Yeah. I keep feeling like there's a way you would describe the berserker's abilities.
Anachronistic means strange and out of place
Cornered Animal
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Thanks for the help guys.
Don't want to waste too much time with this, but figured i'd reach out to see if anyone else had thoughts. ๐
My alternative plan there was going with the idea of inverse.
Health being the inverse of strength.
Rigging is FINALLY done! Took me almost twice as long to weight map it than it did to actually make the model, but it'll be worth iiiit! :D
great style
not sure if we are making a game atm
more an excuse to get in screenshake, ragdolls and particle effects
Lol getting the camera set up but not sure how it will work without testing. /sigh old computer is old...
Camera Phone
My frame drops are real
How bad is it @somber hazel?
My special attack freezes my i5 4460 for a split second ๐
Gonna sell it
like it's a feature
to demonstrate the force of the attack
Hopefully I can find this magic button
That activates Lightweight Rigid Body Simulation
But I fear it's already in ๐ฎ
Magic button?
Not sure if I have to enable it somewhere
Or if it's already activated with physics
My hopes
it's what replaced AnimDynamics basically but they demonstrated it for ragdolls too
๐ฒ
athough, you probably don't do ragdolls specifically
anyway, it's not actually that much more lightweight
it just disables collisions between the individual actors
nah, you have to setup specifically for it if you want to use it
but in your case, I'd just use the default setup
just make sure your destructables don't collide with anything but ground
if they self-collide, that makes it heavy
although, your effects probably rely on that :p
they are blowing in every direction, not sure how much % actually touches itself
welp, nevermind
I actually looked at the number
555 actors hit, all simulate physics
someone call Luos, I need a particle for that ๐
and move 800 of the 1000 actors to the gpu
but time man
๐
I'd know how to mod physx to run that on gpu :p
need custom engine build
and it would only run on nvidia gpu's after that ๐
or, it's not even modding it, it's a feature that's just not available on stock UE4
you don't want to get into physics engine modding in remaining 2.5 days, trust me ๐
Well I'm having a fun night so far. lol
Event Begin Play is not firing in my player controller.

@civic dock amd your class is setup to get them?
Yes.
In fact, Event Begin Play isn't working from anywhere.
Pawn, PlayerController, Level Blueprint, etc.
I don't even.
Time to fix the fact that "Begin Play" might not not be firing in your Unreal Engine 4 project! โโโโโโโโโ Like what weโre doing? Want to see more? Want to he...
I hope you don't mean that @civic dock
Ah, I fixed it! Weird issue I've never encountered before.
Apparently Event Begin Play breaks if you mismatch GameMode/GameModeBase with GameState/GameStateBase.
I had a GameModeBase with a GameState, so that broke it.
I'm experiencing a very strange issue with overlapping actors - as soon as one actor is fully within the volume of another, the overlap ends, and the actors are not seen as overlapping until they fully leave and reenter each other
Anyone had a similar thing before?
Morning brothers, a whole new day for jamming
And sisters too of course.
May I share my progress. To keep myself motivated ๐
#ue4jam #T2Virus day2 progress: items, equipment and basic combat system are all coming along https://t.co/SuviGlwN9b
darn something came up yesterday, and dont have much time today either, might not get anything finished
only got a few hours today and thats it :/
hmm, thats weird, was sure i left my project yesterday when it was broken, but seems to work now
ahh it was a semi hidden bug but its fixed now ๐
spend 30 min tryin to fix the wrong widget ๐
@stable kiln yeah, had some funny issues with widgets that I usually don't get. Momentum was still applied to actors during Widget Creation, even after death/respawm. Was able to work around it though.
i doubt im gunna get anywhere near finished this time ๐
only got a few more hours today and its over for me :/
for some reason when i press esc it stops hiding 1 scrollbox but the other works fine
well gunna just leave this widget broken and migrate my blade and char bp from last jam in there so i have at least something ๐
oops bunch of compile errors ๐
Yeah I'm kinda doubting my ability to finish it in time as well... Only 2 days left, and I haven't touched UE4 at all. Still gotta stock pile animations, program the characters, make all the assets and props, light everything, program the scenes and interactive dialogue, and the audio stuff...
The past 2 days, I made 2 characters and rigged them... ;-;
Game not even half finished... used 2 hours of my time to find cool sfv and music :3
I still call worth it
Yeah, regardless if I finish or not (I'm sure most of us can agree on this), I have learned so much in the past 3 days, it's SO worth doing this
http://tabletopaudio.com/ Here's a good site for ambient music btw, @somber hazel
It's also just great fun. I'm having a blast making this thing now, because it's really really stupid and rather silly.
yeah me too! I've never really had such a drive to make things before this. Like, I've always wanted to, but self management is my biggest fault. This jam has really encouraged me to get stuff done, and I've been able to do things I didn't know I could do before. We just need encouragement :D
That should be fine. Probably wouldn't hurt crediting it either
https://gfycat.com/HotKindlyHarlequinbug
Stress testing is fun >:D
every other jam i actually completed what i wanted to do, this time it seems like a neverending project ๐
I had to cancel a game I've been working on for the past 1.5 years because of that very reason :L
were those other jams a week long as well? @stable kiln
nah shorter, but way less scope\
this editor im making uploads the lvl as json data so other ppl can load it up and when u upload it it generates a new leaderboard on the fly for that level
but so far u can only spawn spheres and cubes and scale/rotate them ๐
wunna add post process and char creator too, but prolly wont make that
Oh very cool! Yeah I always wondered how those things worked without really deticated servers hosting the leaderboards
im usin google datastore
yeh, yeah I think I'll actually gonna continue polishing and expanding the story of this game after the jam. I really enjoy this, and I feel like 1-2 days of work on actually making the story happen doesnt do it justice
Oh nice, I'll give it a look :D
aww crap, i just undid a lot off stuff i just fixed
D:
well fixed it a lot faster this time cuz i know what to do ๐
hmm, wonder if i should add beepbox integration that would only take a few min
Just a mockup for testing
Looks fun :D
Hope the team would make it work ๐
lol wish I had a team xD D;
46 hours left to, and I am just now launching unreal engine
@remote linden and i've spent last 3 days in 3d software, haven't used ue4 ;_;
xD Same here. I've just been posting renders of the progress of my characters. All I have to import right now is a simple walk cycle
literally just opened the engine
@compact cedar I would love to talk to your environment artist. I can only dream of being that good with Blender.
This is really as far as I've gotten. Never done characters before, so it obviously took a bit longer than it should have :P
Looks very dramatic
Thanks, that's the style I'm going for :)
gonna be like an interactive story per se.
No fun, quirky mechanics unfortunately. Just going along for the emotional ride :D
My only biggest issue so far is this girls rig. The weight mapping doesn't want to cooperate. Glad that's the biggest issue though, simple fix
@dusky vessel I made this rail system, but i'm not an Environment artist atm, just making some assets for them (they would need to add logic to it)
@remote linden I like your characters, hoping to see what it will be ๐
Thank you :)
Hopefully if I can pull it off right, it'll be a dramatic love story. That's all I'm saying for now :P
@remote linden I love the design of the character! How long did it take you to do? Did you just open up Blender and crank that out? Did you do a tutorial but then modify it for your needs? What was the process like? How difficult was the rigging?
Looking at screenshots of @remote linden ...dramatic, creepy horror...
Thank you, I really appreciate it!! @dusky vessel
I actually used Cinema 4D to do this. Hoping I don't encounter import problems though, that's the only downside.
The girl was really the first character I've ever made, especially from scratch, and she took about 1.5 days to make. In that half day, I was able to make the guy in about 3 hours, and rig them both.
I did follow a speed art for the girl (the overall design is very different), I just needed to see what kind of workflow I needed to make characters, as I've never done it before. She was just a learning experience, and the guy was quick and fun.
The process for the girl was a bit tougher, since I was going through a few different modelling techniques, to make the clothes and hair, but once I found out that I could really just do everything through polygonal modelling and symmetry, it was way easier to continue. That's why she took 1.5 days, and the guy took 3 hours.
Setting up the bones wasn't all that hard, but I should have modelled the girl with a wider T-Pose, because the polygons are too close together, and there are so few of them, and it doesn't give me or the program any room to be exact.
The guy though was easier because I learned about the TPose problem while doing the girl. Took me about 6 hours to make sure everything ran good and had no problems with other bones. Both were rigged yesterday, as well as making the guy.
@compact cedar Lol, horror wouldn't be a bad idea really. If I had more time to make it, I probably would consider doing it :D
I'm a sucker for good/dramatic horror
It's gonna be an "emotional" (kinda hard to passively portray that without forcing the idea to someone. Not enough time though :P) and dramatic love story. Think of it kinda like a chick flick, but you play as the guy in this situation. Nothing works out for him.
The ways I'm going to kinda help influence the emotions in here though, is through the atmosphere. So he's going to be sad, so it's dark, foggy, his animations is mopey, etc. Then something devestating happens, and now he's depressed. It's hard to emphasize that without a face, so it starts pouring outside. That kinda stuff.
They will also portay emotions through body language. Thats the idea at least, not sure how much I'll be able to do in 1 day and a halves time
^Probably put the most effort into making a really deep theme connection
I love it โค
Here is my story so far
Kid got thrown into paint puddle, everyone laughs at him, what they didn't the know, the color gave him superpowers and now he is up for some revenge on those bully guys
Ooooooh, is that why he's red? :D
yup (actually blue)
Yeah yours looks really fun! :D
I can't wait to try out all the arcady ones here :D
i wish i didnt go 3d with transforms ๐
Guys, oh, my god. Anyone who is dealing with 3D character animations should check out Maximo!
http://imgur.com/2I1lDCk
I had to redo this animation in Cinema 4D a few times over the course of a couple hours because my rig setup was rushed, and sloppy. Maximo did it FLAWLESSY in SECONDS
All attacks in, now just need to fix all the states... that's gonna be fun :3
I am still not sure what game we are actually making, but I know that our potato people can't drive for shit
^wow, looks like a legit game ๐ฎ
I guess we've done a few things right
How big is your team? Very impressive for only a few days work :O
op
Dang! Yeah you're all set!
Hahahaha yeah op for sure xD
And ninjin and I at least are all over here like
:P thanks!
I just mean as you guys can kinda spend more time on individual projects at a time. Being a one man band, I've literally opened UE4 for the first time this jam about an hour ago.
Got 1.5 days to build the sets, do the visuals, program the scenes, make sure everything is timed properly, audio... Guh I'm freaking out xD
Welp, at least if something is boring you can usually just switch, the only positive thing ๐
Except when everything is set up and you really really have to fix all the states in your character ๐
But yeah, you either drop quality to a bare minimum, or you end up with a really short game
Try to find the balance... you just can't ^^
@robust basalt this looking great!
lol every1 is goin for supergore these days ๐
lol mines not gorey at all if that makes you happy xD
@robust basalt all the props made solely for this game?
yeah
@somber hazel
Lol, yeah, doing everything low poly definitely helps with the workflow. Less detail, and more time to do stuff. Plus it's super easy to keep consistent throughout the whole game
thus allowing for a longer game (hopefully)
@robust basalt looks like some nice indy games on Steam
I haven't even gotten started yet, lol. By myself and busy being distracted by family on this holiday weekend. I'm just auditing it and might not even officially enter. Not at all sure I'll get anything remotely finished
yep our physics are the thing ๐
http://imgur.com/MP6mKpG
how did you break it again? ๐
bumpers don't like being set to kinematic ๐
Earth is flat ! WE knew it all allong
Looking good guys!
@proven badge Lol, has better vehicle physics than PUBG
I love how these GIFs are literally shouting at me: "DUDE, step up your game! You are still far far away"
dayum, anyone wanna tell me the secret how you get those sexy high quality gifs on twitter? ๐ฎ
Record video > load it to gyfcat > embed link into twitter = profit
Does the size matter or the fps or anything else? โค
Would be great to share some screens with more than 32 pixels : 3
i think if you want to upload to twitter dirrectly it limits you to 8MB
but if you drop a link to gyfcat, its irrelevant
pretty sure, they even give you an option to tweet the video automatically as soon as its proccesed
So great to see everyone's progress shots today. โค
start block level, after finish all the gameplay stuff
@fallow lion Looks cool
Now, trying to finish up this gameloop and trying to figure out how to blend two different art styles together so it looks cohesive enough
merge art styles is hard sometimes
looks good man
They did a good job with their respective tasks though
pretty cool characters
@robust basalt haha, pretty sure this happens a lot more than you think: https://gyazo.com/034ad6ef6105e831ed2339768eb8b266
(first part anyway)
I though you had some kind of potato people invasion
I have a lot of random stuff to work with.
If your potato people come here
I will get my mechs to eat them up
I endup with tribal ppl game somehow
@fallow lion well, denny's team has potato people, I have robots, you have tribal
sounds legit
Too bad they didn't have the flip category
Like in GGJ
I mean swap
Where two teams swap mid-way in their games
and swap games for the remainder time
oh this could be crazy
That would be an awesome category and probably wouldn see some really crazy stuff come out of it
@copper carbon Please make note--> Gamejam-swap category for a future jam? Where two teams swap their projects mid-way and complete the games in their own vision. Could be cool.
I'll take a note. That could be fun ๐
there would be so much drama ๐
@rigid fog That would be crazy for programmers. Comments are MUST.
lol, I'd be tempted to purposely do this
So much to still do and the countdown clock keeps ticking down.
No character models or animations, no levels, no sound, no music. Everything going great then.
I've only got the characters modelled. Trying to gather a pack from Mixamo, but I still gotta make it work in UE4. Same boat as you though :(
No scenes, audio, anything besides my 2 characters... probably gonna pull an all nighter tomorrow
@carmine kindle
@remote linden blueprints was a mistake
Probably the worst day for me
what happened? D:
Tried to implement a really cool dash ability the whole time
In the end I decided to just use impulse
Jesus, time
impulse?
Oh wait, actually, AddForce from Character Movement
Yeah, was trying to implement my own Pawn class for my movement, ended up staying with character and some hacks
:(
Well, regardless of wether or not you can meet the deadline, I feel like the main take away from game jams is new skills, knowledge, and workflow
xD

I'll race ya for that ssd
same here. might call it a night soon, and pull an all nighter tomorrow. I don't want to, but I might have to :/
๐ฎ ๐ฅ โฒ ๐ ๐ซ
alrighty, time for some UI stuff
omg, I forgot about all that... I literally have to make a GAME in 1 day
The first thing I will do after this... Playing your game and beat it under 4:20
โค
xD It's not even arcardy... It'll probably only last that long since it's a story game xD
The guy who beats the other game faster is the winner
;P
PutsWaveTimerOn60min
huhu
xD I actually can't wait to play all these games though. So much more great content can be made in 5 days rather than 2
Yeaaah, looks like I'm going to have to forfeit. I kinda went at this all wrong, but it is my first game ever, so I didn't expect much. Might just turn it into a small short film instead, on the side.
Plus my mouse just died on me, so I can't work even if I wanted to D;
๐ฎ
Just wanted to say that I got this crazy idea, but only 26 or something hours left :3
Don't know if I should do it
Coffee is great and sleep is for amateurs. Go for it.
You could fit 3 whole working days into one! Effeciency!!
last game jam I did I stayed awake from Friday morning until Sunday evening ๐
I remember :3
it's a shame the summer jam was last weekend and not the one coming, Wednesday and Thursday are national holidays here (and I could have taken Friday off to get a 5 day weekend)
well i still have a few hours today to work on my jam,. wonder if i should add gameplay or do more on my editor
no polish for me, more settings and sliders ๐
Mfw I try and land an opportunity such as this game jam, but life keeps getting in the way
I think it needs more fire
@dull basin do you guys have a blog or something? I'd really love to see the steps and see how you guys tackled this project. You've done SO much in 4 days, blows my mind
25 hours
lol, yeah note to self. Start making the game as soon as the jam starts. I left myself 25 hours to make the game game ;-;
how's your game goin, @rigid fog ?
Oh good! :D
I can't wait to see it! :D
yeah as expected :P
Crazy how fast these days flew by
Yeah I hear ya. I kinda bit off more than I could chew, and spent like, 8 hours learning how to assign and edit characters, as well as programming animations. I was wide awak with a slamming head ache at 3am, is when I called it quits xD
UMG?
But still have quite a bit to do, the other programmer got sick
UMG = Unreal Motion Graphics
UI stuff
Widgets
Oh no! I hope you both are still able to finish it
aka, Visual Slate
oh gotcha
I'll get it done
I'm not worried about it getting done. Just won't have as much time for polish
I at least have someone doing level design, so I don't have to worry too much about the levels coming together
lol my entire game has been UMG ๐
@stable kiln best way to go sometimes
Oh good! Yeah I think I'll definitely try and get a team together next time.
Lol yeah I guess my game would have been UMG too then. Really just an interactive short film, so it's all animated. Not really possible in 4 days though
Did you make your own editor in the game? :O
hahah that's awesome! Does it save your work? How hard is it to do all that?
lol "ownreal"
you upload the lvl so other ppl can try beat ur score
@remote linden i didn't blog for this, slap animates and rigs characters in less than a day then i play around and pose them for fun.
just gotta think of some pickups or game mechanic cuz its just jumpin over stuff for now ๐
prolly no time for a character editor tho, that seemed like fun
@dull basin Oh nice, lol you guys are really effecient at making and animating characters! Looks really great!
Oh 3d-coat, why are you so great at automatic retopology... https://i.gyazo.com/393348c3897ce4dfcdc77785de43a12e.png
The green bit is supposed to be the new lowpoly mesh at 20k triangles.
๐ฃ
must be some good normal maps ๐
I should prolly do a package now so i can upload something if something comes up...
#ue4jam progress, using a dynamic material/element system, I made this game I call, 'Counting Your Blessings' :D #gamedev #UnrealEngine #UE4 https://t.co/K9D36Na2wa
fml
Just packaged game
then just ran into this problem
GGWP
4.16.2 OP, fixed by using ISMC instead. Get rekt
I would probably have gave up at that point, as I was planning on compiling it last minute xD
@remote linden nah, I've been doing at least daily
But, there was an addition since yesterday.
I haven't even started. Kinda glad I never officially signed up in the forum. Finally getting some time to work on it the rest of the evening, overnight if needed and tomorrow, as long as it's before we go for the 4th of July picnic. Yeah, I'm not getting anything completed, but I do want to see how far I can get at my first time ever really using Unreal
The first time is the best time ... ๐
The idea I ended up with might be doable for me in this period, but I really have no clue. Took my idea and just boiled it down to one scene to make it feel doable. ๐ You know the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade movie? The scene where Indy has to choose the right Cup of Christ? Was thinking of doing something like that, in VR. Pick out the right object (the 'blessing')
Just da day left ๐
when you really need to polish and wrap up, but only thing you can think of is explosions...
@robust basalt Moar explosions please
I think I forgot what game I was supposed to make
I'm going to have absolutely no time to test the difficulty of anything. That's always a good sign, right?
You got more than 1 level?
My idea is finally working out, but it probably took 2 long :3
Is that the blessing in disguise? You get to be all lazy and never have to walk anywhere ever again?
WTB Pro Tester
Pretty sure my LD trolled me
jeez
l33t skillz req in this game
yo
There's a laser on my ass
Pretty sure that laser isn't working correctly
reminds me, need to fix my player hud
hmm
Pretty sure I have another 4 levels to go
I don't know about this last one that was done ๐ญ
just a few more ideas
@fallow lion go go go go
You might want to add a link to your game on the forum post too.
@glass fossil Also that itch.io link also doesn't seem to be working for me either.
Good luck finishing your stuff, everybody. I'm gonna go see if I can find where that sleep is hiding.
I might be actually able to deliver this time :3
Praise 5 days, you can actually make a small game
Man,
I want to finish up tonight, but this headache's not going away
Guess I'll grab some ๐ด for a bit
need to optimize for the over 9000 experience :3
but sleep does sound great
indeed
damn i wish I didn'thad to go to work in 5 hours... I'd make more levels ๐ http://imgur.com/llIV9SL
also physics is sooo frikin fun
Dayuuum, editor game works great, packaged game not so
dat physics car yo
http://imgur.com/VLMnPX3 Sweet Sweet Explosions
Let's see..
5 hours to polish. K
Oh and need to set up stream, to play some jams games.
So maybe 4
guess it's time to go home!
When your internet goes out 4 hours before deadline
Yeah, because why wouldn't I upload my jam submission and just stream games...
Hmm.... Wonder if Starbucks is open
hmm, does event begin play also start when an actor gets spawned?
Only 3 hours left. https://media.giphy.com/media/47nNHdEE4LGp2/giphy.gif
Still don't know what I'm calling mine... lol
i think i'm out, after 5h or tring to package my game and finally succed , the game just crash on load, Missing dependency ๐
fix that missing dependency and get it uploaded
to not do so would be a waste of all that work, wouldn't it not ๐
You got it @marsh oxide ๐
You'll have to fix it eventually anyways if you want to build stuff in the future, why not now when there is lots of motivation. ๐
I FOUND HIM
Man. The crunch is real... I have 2 hours to polish up, get to Starbucks and upload this damn thing
my game still has zero gameplay ๐ฆ
2.5 hours guys! How's everyone going? :D
my package had a shitload of errors but no time to check the build version and still need to add gameplay
@remote linden still no network, i think we stuck with what already been done, hope @rigid fog will find a way to upload the game
Yeah yeah. I am actually adding stuff. Polishing it up and then package, run to Starbucks and go go go.
@rigid fog now I finally understand THEME! It's a BLESSING for other teams!
@NetworkProvider well done, neat disguise.
@compact cedar lol, yeah I totally believe it. I could have really used a team on this one
hehe
i managed to make the build and project to not crash, but the game is nothing like in the editor ๐
well ... my balloon prop hunt, wont make it into this jam
Just submit it anyways ๐
i can't, it does not work ๐
the build does not work .... i managed to make it not crash but now for some reason it does not load some part of some actors
The package not matching the editor is always the worst
yup, i wish there was a way to get 'developer' build and get what you have in the editor build
^I approve this
cmoooon guys and gals, you can do this!!
Anyone streaming play troughs? ๐
damn my game is broken ๐ฆ
Lol
I've seen 3 amazing games so far.
(not counting ours)
Still. This GJ was amazing experience for me. All thanks to @rigid fog @grave marlin @karmic fiber
I wanna thank
well it still uploads, the savegame broke in last min
If you're even 1 sec to late, its disqualification ๐
@rigid fog BTW, great Title!
fuuuuck nog gonna make it
LOOK at that speed...
need 15 more minutes
?
jk
he means that picture belongs in a museum ๐
btw, staff can see all changed in a forum post, right?
Yeah
But they usually don't care
I know people who have won that were half a day late
First game jam and I misunderstood that the submission date was the deadline rather than the entry ๐ Almost managed to make something in like 20 hours but no dice.. ah well
Better luck next jam
Victor, seriously?
I wish I could just get the link that google is going to use
instead of just waiting for the complete upload to take place
oh..
let me just share folder
how is it going vic?
did your crappy internet get us a fetal entrie?
ah well had fun making it
@grave marlin Download that and watch intro
goign to try to upload 32bit version now I guess
@rigid fog downloading now
Need to add banner and all that good stuff still
So
Supposedly the internet will be back up at 3
So says my provider anyway. I'll stream submissions around then if so.
What time is it now?
The moment I realized...
"Yeah, your game has nothing to compete against this" ๐
fml
mine is submitted with bugs and all ๐
prolly could have fixed it up a lot in 30 min, but hey
@somber hazel Well, not sure about their sound person, but with @proven badge @dull basin @robust basalt on a team, you're pretty much SOL
If u guys build some awwsome lvls for me perhaps its not too bad ๐
Unless they do Pirate MP games that are buggy...rahhahaha
Just by looking at screenshots, I feel like the whole competition this time stepped up their game
well
we all have extra time
had*
So everyone should have been able to put a bit more polish in their games
Add more than usual
But it depends on the team
If 2 of your members go MIA for the last 3 days.. well...
You're SOL as well
SOL?
Is anyone going to be streaming playing the games this time?
Shit Outta Luck
I will once my internet comes back up at home
I'm at starbucks
and there's no way I could do it here
He said at 3 before, unkown time zone tho
Alright, cool, I'll tune in then when you get around to it.
No steam today?
@white crown Official Epic Stream? No
It's 4th of July
Most of them are probably drunk
Or at the very least enjoying a day off
Hopefully grilling out...which I will be also
And enjoying some fireworks later on tonight
Thanks. I thought we have a stream at 2pm also
Yeah I'm going to watch fireworks tonight
#ue4jam when your consciousness remains and also gain the ability to switch between zombie and human mode. #T2Virus infection is a blessing https://t.co/e8POkZXyB4
๐๐it was a successful jam
Sweet, looks like having them less frequently is really getting more people involved.
well my shit might be buggy, but at least i can still work on my lvls ๐
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-h1MEzkve0ANzFSVzVKT2czOEE
so who will beat all the levels (5)
the last one is verry hard i would say, i made it maby that does not count
rest are not to extream
Hmm, I might give some of the games a whirl myself this time. Some of them look great.
@somber hazel jss, the amount of the assets You've made for this Jam is ridiculous!
GG everyone! Lots of cool entries this time!
are we supposed to record gameplay videos of our jam game?
Nope, not necessary.
word
I'ma do it anyway at some point
but I don't need it on the forum post or whatever ๐
Might make people more interested if they like what they see though, yeah.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPXDyY6fviU <- this one not the one in the game (afaik)
Ah shoot, already found a download link that requires you to register an account somewhere.
@carmine kindle sad story, disqualified?
Might work, I don't know, I'm not going to bother checking out though then anyhow.
the final level lazers not activated ๐ for your health
they are active when you play dont worry
1h 20m late, but whatever. Still fun to make ๐
@grave marlin umm...skybox was made like...10hrs ago
@compact cedar Assets? The programming stuff was a pain, I actually still can't believe it's working, I need to fix the LOD though, so you can actually play the 15k level
what game did you make ninjin
ah
@compact cedar oh wait, that was joke, because I only have a floor and cube as sky ๐
sry, brain is working slowly
Playthrough?
Yea
nice
But, realized that I haven't actually streamed from my new account
So, should be an interesting transition
Need time to setup anyway
hmm
hopefully I didn't mess anything upo
@rigid fog Will we update the game later?
@rigid fog cause, i could do levels and modelling, but i'm not yet good (fast) with ue4 BPs

well social life has caught up too me, cant play any of the games any time soon ๐ฆ
or make a good level for my own game ....
a lot of widget bugs have showed up in the packaed version, mostly cosmetic tho
so like... if I made a hotfix, should I not add it to the submitted version? I don't wanna get disqualified for bugfixing ๐
@compact cedar wrong channel ๐ keep it in team chat
sorry, first game jam... not really familiar with the process
I think we can put a new link, but I never delete the old one
ah kk that makes sense
We should get some information from someone official
@unkempt scarab YOu can add a new link
And you just state this is a hotfix
with the new link
but do NOT take out original link
Sounds good. Thanks buddy
timestamp the new link also
it's just what's fair for everyone
If they want to play the newer version, it's up to them
timestamp?

can anyone test this link for me https://goo.gl/XQdvBY
works fine
having hard time with this links today for no reason, especially with half brain working
thx man
i think the & and ' in team name bug it somehow
I forgot to make my first game jam link in google drive public, but I was lucky enough to catch Allar's stream where he pointed it out or no one would have been able to play it. Now I double and triple check every time ๐
never had any issues, my test build was fine in onedrive
final one hang
i used free one for post in dealine, but i will add some mirrors
the only diference is that i add & and ' in file for team name
Yeah, those pesky symbols mess things up sometimes
Anyone know what the deal is with the drop box "zip is too large" thing? I'm unable to download a couple of the games like that.
Does saving it to your own drop box bypass that?
Alright
will use drive and dropbox, so i can finally sleep ๐
My favourite one so far is the one where someone uploaded just the .exe file and nothing else.
:D, usually there is ones with only pictures
Woot, finished finally downloading all the games that I could. 104 of them to play through. ๐
There's actually more games, maybe like 115 or so. I'm not counting the VR ones or a few I could maybe download, but didn't bother to.
@somber hazel @glass fossil Jokes on you, fps never dropped!
@proven badge what's Your game # ?
30 i think
@sharp berry playing your game
@proven badge I know the levels stop at 2,5k, but did your fps never drop on the 15k??
I'm just bummed I didn't get the opportunity to really participate. Just a little too busy and not enough ability to stay up all night. Oh well. I'll try again next time.
Because my card can't handle updating 15k enemies 40times per second :3
Continuing ue4jam playthru https://www.twitch.tv/victorburgosgames
oh my, an unreal game jam, this sounds neat
they used to be monthly? that sounds stressful, i thought this sort of thing would be annual
I am afraid you missed this one
also they moved to 4 jams per year
instead of monthly
well i didnt have any plans of participating, too new for that, but its nice to see what others have done, demonstrates the potential of what CAN be done ๐
@lusty trellis This jam has really nice games! maybe cause of time limit is longer.

ah okay ill look
Yeah sorry was building the path on the fly
maybe you don't put them in there, but if not that file it'd be one of the others
hmm, no luck finding that. the only ini in the whole folder is config for the crash report client
fwiw, the game in question is The Spring Comes Armed, winner of the april contest
You could try making that file
Tbh I don't think that's the best way, but just what came to mind immediately
When you open the game, can you get the console to open? If you can, you can enter some of these sg and r values directly
doesn anyone knows how much time will pass before we get some info about the jam results?
there are a lot of entries
is anybody goin to stream so playtrough of the games?

@rigid fog with the editor u can make a map and save it online so it loads from the playlist
one of my arrays is not set up right so deleting or load game messes up and it doesnt save exactly the map you build tho
I uploaded the project without any lvls and put those in there with the build version
I think its load game that messes it up
just uploaded a lvl w/o using save load and it uploaded it just as i made it

@rigid fog aww I missed it :( I'm out traveling until Saturday afternoon /evening
nice love it
ill prolly fix a few bugs tomorrow and upload it too itch
I hate it that it doesnt allways upload the exact same level thats made in the editor
I havent seen all jam entries offc but as far as i know i did the 1st cloud based game ๐
@stable kiln heh
So many games this jam...
@stable kiln you ever going to get rid of that character btw?
no, he is my signature dude ๐
Hmm
a cube with extruded mouth and eyes ๐
At least you tried something decent this jam...lol
can make those in 5 min ๐
I was pretty annoyed at the lack of "try" on the majority of the games.
It stores alll info you do in the editor and uses varest plugin to send it too google datastore
so you add a lvl too the list when you play it start from finish in the editor
but my array got a bit messed up so it doesnt allways store the exact same lvl and items gets switched around :/
@stable kiln I know you had what you wanted to do. But I think if you reduced your scope a bit and polished... Would be really nice to see.
yea its not super mario maker just yet. but the option to change sun direction and color is pretty cool
this is the data from all the lvls
its 15 kb ๐
oops
cant have my project link in there ๐
If some1 starts sending strings there on tick im gunna hit my datalimit real fast ๐
@rigid fog what do you mean by "lack of try"?
@sweet flame rahahah. Was wondering if anyone was going to ask
I couldn't think of the right words at the time. But basically I felt that the majority of games submitted were half-assed attempts or barely that even.
well, I'm doing jams for fun, but also want to learn/take away something from it. Even critique of other games is valuable because it helps me avoid those mistakes. So any comments are welcomed
As in, there was no real effort in producing a decent product in the end.
Oh, I made all my comments in the stream. I was as objective as possible.
I have nothing to add to any game personally.
Think it was great that people did the jams. Great they "completed" them. Whenever possible.
What I did not like were the ones that barely went above something past the templates
I guess it depends. I didn't really plan to do a jam, but it just so happened, that I was messing with blob physics and got some game idea, so I made it. So it was probably less entertaining than full on jam effort.
Phone please type better
what?
That's not what I mean though
You can definitely tell a difference between someone who tried to make something decent and someone who randomly threw something together.
It's not like there's a random drawing anymore.
oh, I see what you mean.
While there were exceptions... After Page 2, the quality and effort of games went to poop
You can tell these were last minute, rushes to get something out. Without thought.
It used to be, that people entered just for the sake of entering (for price). But that doesn't make sense anymore, so You are wondering why those games are still there?
So, I join for "fun" as well.
But I am also very competitive
I mean, I want people to join the jam and have fun and do their thing. But we had a lot of games that just used templates, made some silly assets or just flipped and threw up the game.
Yeah. I'm not big fan of using default engine assets
We had some that had no working game mechanics
that is weird too
Some that I couldn't even get past the main menu
Some I couldn't open
I mean, the list goes on.
Why even throw up submissions if the game doesn't work at all.
I think the reduced frequency of jams hurt a bit.
My biggest pet peeve though.... Are games that are super huge....and no ending or doing the same old mechanics with no real progression
No freaking reason to have these huge landscapes if nothing is really changing.
I think you could do "request only" playthroughs. Because smetimes it's just waste of time.
Hmm... See...I can't do that either. Because sometimes you get these hidden gems.
And devs don't watch or request playthru
Also, I learn a lot from the games.
I learn from the bad just as equally as the good.
I personally don't mind playing all the games. The issue I have will be, if they continue doing it in the future. Because if they don't watch my stream or get it playtested by others... where do they get the feedback to improve?
idk
I always watch the streams. At least my game. Did that with Allar and now with your streams
@sweet flame also "reduced game jams"
I agree
The numbers are misleading
Yes more people submit
But the effort and quality is worse
I noticed, that there is the same amount of good quality games as it was in monthly jams.
maybe even less
5 days and we still had late entries. I eman even mine was 2 mins late.
1h 20m ๐ฌ
But my internet went out and had to go to Starbucks. But their upload speed was poop
Yeah. Hehe. I think I only played up to yours.
Also...
People linking to folders... But no game in there.
Or only uploading .exe
that's weird
it's pretty safe to assume people uploading exe never had a working game to begin with
it's happened more than once
some people have linked just some image too ๐
In past, those were most likely done because people wanted to take part on the raffles
All the unplayable submissions this time, it makes me wonder about how many of them actually realise (even now long after the submission period ended) that the stuff they posted isn't working. I doubt many of them were there for the streams either.
@carmine kindle aye. That's why I asked @pulsar yarrow but should have also messaged @copper carbon about getting the playthrough mentioned on the official stream so people can get some critical feedback and hopefully learn from their mistakes.
I mean, if I just dev'd for 5 days straight and then submitted a game, to find out no one was able to play it... I would be super disappointed.
Especially if they were silly little mistakes. But if they never know...then they may make the same mistakes in the future.
I mean, one of the games looked awesome. But kept closing out after 10 seconds. Everytime.
There are a lot of post-production steps that devs either do not think about or just don't know.
^Let's be honest, if you submit after the deadline, in 95% of the cases, it's your own fault. "Internet goes down" can happen, but it's rare and you can count those submissions with one hand. People are just new to the engine and assume they have a chance to win a Gamejam, because they spent some time "working". Don't get me wrong, I still think you should let them upload even after the deadline (+ Alex probaly didn't want to deal with all the excuses of people, so locking the forum thread after deadline is a bad idea). However, I believe, the majority of people who really care about making a good game have something called self-reflection. They know exactly what seperates their game of the others, I'm talking from my own experience. They will learn how to make things faster and how to organize better by themselves and they will realize that to win a Jam, you actually need some kind of experience.
About this game that closes after 10 seconds and some other submissions that you can't play, I'm 90% sure it's the dev thinking he can outsmart others. I thought the same in the past "oh yeah, I'm gonna polish it and tell everyone that I didn't know I uploaded wrong". I believe that's the issue with late submissions.
Something about the stream @rigid fog. I really don't think people want to watch a 3 days marathon of someone playing gamejam games, especially if the quality of games is dropping. If you cared about giving advice to the devs, you would restrict the time limit of each game played (even the good ones) so the devs could actually have a chance to tune in when their game is played (also, I know we had our difficulties in the past, and we have 2 different views of the world, but I just want to make sure to tell you that these words are not from someone who hates you, it's just my opinion, others can join the discussion as well ofc)
Wau, what a text, I'm back to answerhub :3
@somber hazel Man wtf
You want me to read all that ๐ญ
Let me reply in sections
Oh, I don't doubt that 95% of case that people who post after deadlines is their own fault. I mean, even my entry, shit, I could tehcnically have uploaded it the night before or super early in the morning but I had planned to polish it up until the very last minute. But yeah, obviously the internet going out is a fluke. I mean, I busted my butt to get to the nearest Starbucks to get that submission in on time, but that .01 upload speed was too good and I myself was 2mins late.
I agree about the self-reflection part for sure. I actually need to do a post-mortem before I forget.
I have to agree about devs trying to "cheat the system"
That's why I don't like links to folders and such, even though sometimes there's a timestamp. Usually on Google Drive.
Which is why I believe that since the jams are less frequent, they can put more effort into organizing it all
Including the submission process.
Make it a formal upload to the Epic Servers.
With a form to fill out.
I don't know, I am kind of torn about limiting each game's playtime. I have definitely given it some thought each time I do the playhroughs.
There are obvious advantages, especially for the streamer, more sleep being one of them:)
I of course would love if people could polish up their game and get them tight into a 30min game
Like I mentioned before, I did not enjoy the super long walks/runs, between actions, artificially increasing playtime.
People who built huge landscapes, but it was barely filled, or same old, same old.
Stream -> I sent a private message
Submissions: I think everyone loves quality, but I'll bet there is only 1 guy (probably Alex, Amanda now) at Epic who is hand sorting the list of entries to about 20?! games that actually have a chance to win, and then there are the "judges" (which I think is way below what everyone thinks ;P) who will check out these 20 games. The other games will not be considered, but to give everyone a chance to submit and make it a big event, they keep the submission barrier as low as possible.
That's how I would do it
Even though it sounds harsh
Heh, I don't think that's how they do it
because they have video footage of each game
and it's not from Allar's or mine's streams
So I know they play it. Obviously it must have been taking a toll for Epic employees
Instead of "working" they were playing games for a week ๐
Even though to me...that would be their job, since they are CMs...
But I'm not the boss
5 sec video clip, that's telling someone "hey, can you start the game, move the controller left and right and repeat that for 90% of the submissions"
That poor guy though ๐
It's a massive amount of work ;P
But this person actually makes sure to capture the best part of the game
So props to her/ him โค
I have to say from my point of view when it comes to jams; we weren't trying to make the best game in the world. We were using the jam as an oppertunity for 4-5 friends to come together and practice collaboration and learn how to make some new things. Although most of our mechanics probably could have been found in templates, we made them all from scratch, to learn some new stuff! Also @VictorBurgos still haven't had a chance to look at the VOD of your playthrough as I'm out traveling with just data right now D:
I spent some of the jam learning to animate which I've not done since a 4week course in y1 of my degree, so that was a lot of fun! We also had to take time out of the jam to pack and move half of our flat xD So all in all I'm pretty happy with what we achieved
We could have done with some more time for balancing though
@oblique garden right. And I understand that for some, it's not to try to "produce a winner". But there are still some bare minimums that should be met... Does the game work? Did I zip it up prior to uploading it in Google Drive? Did I check download link to make sure it downloads and plays right. Was I able to complete game to completion myself? Etc, etc.
Yeah :) I wish we'd had more time to polish bugs, but we're a team of 4 people who've been doing gamedev for not very long, and none of us professionally (yet)
I only had a chance to try it after I'd uploaded it, as our programmer has really slow upload
Aaand none of us know perforce/git well enough to use it xD
But yeah, I can see from the playthroughs that playing them can be really frustrating
For us though, We're super happy with what we made, not because it's in any way a perfect game, or even a very good game. But we learnt a lot, and we're starting to work pretty well together ^^
I would deffo prefer if the jams were more often though really
Yeah. They used to be and everyone enjoyed them.
Then again we could just join other random jams
But it seemed to be a burden for Epic.
Probably running out of good prizes.
Since these newer jams still don't have anything good.
Still the same old SSDs
But some jams are limited
Heh, I could put those prizes to very good use :p
But again, I'm not really doing it for the prizes
I know it wasn't 750MB before.
As for people leaning. That's great. I mean you all put an actual game together
Sure I was frustrated with the bugs and had to cheat to complete it. But at least it was still better than others.
๐ฆ hurray we weren't the worst :D
Speaking of the games and quality of submission, I ended up not really doing anything, despite the best intentions. I just was kept too busy all weekend and by the time I had time to work on anything, I didn't have enough time to get anything done that would qualify.
So I decided I'd just keep working through tutorials and whatnot and be ready to try again next time there's a jam
I'd rather do that than submit a nonworking stub
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DEDaWnxXUAAjPgm.jpg
Hello there, wonderful people
We're running a tasty jam over on itch called Cherry Jam! Whether you're a AAA veteran or have absolutely no dev experience at all but were looking for an excuse to start, we may have the event for you!
We've got some awesome things planned such as prizes for random participants since it's not all about winning, prizes for tweeting out an image of your lovely healthy meal during the jam, and on top of that, the winning team will receive a 3-hour session with the expert GameDev PR Firm, GoPublix!
Interested / know someone interested? Check us out here: https://itch.io/jam/game-dev-network-cherry-jam
Doing VR playthrus now: twitch.tv/victorburgosgames
8 days left for the jam results \o/
Tough one to call this jam
Visuals, maybe Potato.
Theme connection... Probably Cameleon one, but that was a pretty late entry. I didn't like any theme connection that just hammered it into the storyline...
Addiction... I can't think of one game I wanted to play over and over again, but there were a few solid games out there.
@rigid fog was there a spreadsheet for your gamejam playthrough?
@dull basin hmm good question. I think @compact cedar started one. Not sure if it's updated. Don't have link to it either.
I did, but it was such pain in the butt to fill, so i've dropped after several titles
๐ฆ oh well thanks anyway
My game (made in less than 24 hours) scored a 3.0 on Victors stream, could be worse for such short creation time ๐
Now Im curiois if it would even show up on the reel of ue4 stream
@sharp berry lol
My scoring system needs work, and it's just one person's (or two's for most of the stream) opinion anyway.
Still an independant opinion!
@sharp berry What was your game?
