Hello everyone! I am Snowbro (Eugenio Del Vecchio on Facebook). I just moved to the Spelkollektivet, a swedish game developer collective and I'd like to join this summer jam full time! I studied UE4 for 2 years and worked full time on VR for 1 year.
Mainly, I am design oriented, but so far, I can do:
- Blueprint scripting: mechanics prototyping and implementation. editor tools
- C++ coding: handling file I/O, working with .json, stuff like that
- Sequences with Unreal Sequencer
- Not too fancy material and particle effects
- Profiling/performance stuff, fixing deployment issues, handling repositories and everything else I forgot!
In this special occasion I am being joined by my girlfriend for some fancy sound design!
I am mainly looking for someone nice to jam with in general, but mainly I lack in 3d modelling and 2d art. I know it is pretty late and I don't expect to find anyone, but here I am anyway!

I should chip in that, if there is an existing team with both code/BP and art skills on board, I'm willing to throw my lot in as a game designer for the jam.
(I am a game designer by trade, and work well with early concepts, so game jams are literally my jam)

like, I'm currently playing Mafia 3 on hardest setting, no auto aim and I'm using gamepad
I am waiting on Steam Controller 2.0
sure you get some shots easier with mouse but you kinda get used to the pad
and it's way more intuitive to move around with analog sticks
at least, in 3rd person game
I find it slow and cumbersome in most
and if the game has artificial restrictions on turning when using a mouse, I just won't play it
one reason I prefer pad is the keybinds, they are always easy to put intuitively and easier to remember, especially since the main buttons are color coded
of course you learn the keybinds quickly if you play a game for a while (and you usually map the keys same way on fps games)
but still, it's one thing less to worry about as fps games still vary on default mappings
while gamepad mappings usually work just fine out of the box
(in modern era anyway, pre x360 controller times were pain)

Aim to get your game up and submitted a fair bit before that. If you go a second over, it probably won't be bad, but if you're way late you won't qualify for prizes I think.

ok ok for the disguise. What if you constantly encountered wild horses and you had to make sure to take pics of only unicorns. So like pfist was telling me about another gamejam game with wolf in sheeps clothing sor of scenario.
Maybe when you start the game, you could have a "loading" screen that has the definition in it.

after a long ass brainstorming session, i finally settled down on something doable
I recently tried the volumetric fog thing soo ill prolly overuse this ๐
the game could be just entirely volumetric fog
making light shafts look ugly
cause vol fog is a blessing in disguise you think its great till your performance is really shit
well the reverse of it anyway
set up volumetric fog and a BP that sends floats too firebase
but yea, this fog with lights does kinda tank my fps
If i learned anything from crappy steam games.... when ur fps drops under 30 fps its ready for shipping ๐
How did you figure out the secret to making a successful AAA game?!
You also need to have motion blur on so people don't see that the fps is low, they'll think it's just moving super fast.
Over market the fact that the game runs at close to the standard framerate for a film as well.

I'm writing down any old idea as they come. Even if they're all bad ideas, some might combine and give inspiration that way.
I feel like it's hard to come up with a good one if you don't iterate quickly.
This way I can keep track of the ideas I've already had, review them periodically, etc.

could try manually bringing something in but the whole point in being able to do cloth in editor was to remove the need for external tools

in 4.16 you actually need to point too the lvls to include into the package btw

I found the cloth paint tool but it didn't really seem to do anything without apx
I think by default the cloth paint window doesn't open, so you have to open it from the top menu bar
well, I needed to enable it first from editor settings->experimental, and I got the dialog open, just wasn't obvious how one would use it after that step
that dialog literally had apx slots in the top
@stable kiln on now you have to include levels you want... manually...good and bad.
I've almost always listed the levels manually on packaging settings anyway
But yeah. Might as well do a package test once I have had my coffee
And figure out what everyone was up to while I was asleep

I didn't find any option to actually create the cloth asset anywhere so I was confused

shipping x64 without nativization seems to work for me
I also tested the 32bit stuff with full rebuild, just in case but couldn't get it to package
89 MB for the template packaged with x64 build, no blacklisting or asset stripping
could get ~15MB off with 32bit build I think

Essentially, you're paying $225/ month for server space
everything else they do, doesn't add much value
You can get yourself a droplet for 5-10 a month
and do the same thing with more access and control
When it was $40/month for perforce, for 5 users, I was content
They couldn't justify the 500% increase
I mean... It's still that price because someone is paying for it

yeah this character took around 3.5 hours to make. Was technically my first and original character I've ever made. So hopefully the next 2 will go way faster, now that I know what I'm doing

Adding a timeline is the only thing that should make you concern about something, but update and tick is pretty much the same/ you shoulnd't care
There was a post from Peter L. Newton, who said something interesting about Timer and Tick, I think Timer was CPU bound and Tick GPU bound or something

This is my first progress shot, but I'm actually going to redo the character design. Going to be a lot more boxy and flat, while still retaining their distinct characteristics. I actually think this new idea will work better anyways. Saves me time in almost every aspect, but it allows for a more expressive feel to them

Well, the rules doc has the correct special category prizes, so it's not completely out of date.

The main point of confusion is the rules doc doesn't have a Major Categories header above the main 3.
So it makes it sound like "All games are judged against these 3 criteria", which sounds like you need to have a balance to win.
But the forum thread makes it look more like you could pick one and go for that.

They were Addiction, Eye Candy and Philosophy (now called Fun Factor, Overal Visuals and Unique Use of Theme, respectively).
