Epic is smart enough to realize who uses template menus and who doesnt
but if you need to tweak a lot of things before you get started, that'll be away from the game jam time
point here is not to cheat, point is to make it so openly that it's obvious (that it's premade asset that shouldn't be taken into account when judging the entry)
Everyone who has Options Settings is obviously using a template and if you made this during the Jam, someone should tell you it's wasted time
I think the judges, who ever these guys are, don't care about Settings
The only thing that matters is the Background Image or your Level in the Background of the menu

Friday-Sunday jams include 12-18 hours of sleeping time. That's a hefty percentage of your total time until the deadline

All I said is that during some game jams I elected not to sleep, in order to get more done - the rest is projection on your part. I neither endorsed it nor suggested that that was the best way to achieve things. How someone manages their time when up against a tight deadline is their prerogative.

if they have a hdmi cable for phones (we have a few in our office) and a device like a hauppauge or a elgato they could stream it

There is that screen sharing thing which I think shares over USB called visor or something, my personal phone didn't support it (android jelly bean or something), so can't give any personal experience with it

When I did a hackathon, I was the only one who didn't sleep. I almost slept through the presentation of our code, but it was totally worth it. We went up against some seniors and my group was newbies. We got second place!! โค

I'm surprised that there hasn't been more conversation here in the leadup to the big game jam the day after tomorrow
Probably a lot of reasons
after so much hype over the last few months, the prizes are meh at best
Especially given the reasons for holding the official jam quarterly
Most people have already probably formed teams and are prepping themselves for it
Most of the jammers may have forgotten about Epic Jams since they are only held every few months now
That or they just can't do this one for whatever reason
Most dedicated jammers stay hush hush or aren't on this discord chat
Or are on this discord but rarely chat
Also, "Big Game Jam" is misleading
it's just a regular game jam, nothing special, other than it being held less often
And probably a big one, poor marketing on it
There are only 8 teams signed up this time
It's also Hindu new year, so that might count a few people out
Epic are pretty bad for scheduling jams over religious holidays

That gives you at best 25MB to work with. The engine and its content is like 75mb packaged.

its not too bad as long as you are starting from scratch, and not adding crazy things

yeah you have to go into the preferences and turn a ton of stuff on and off
theres a lot of options under the packaging tab
yup if they really want to make that category decent they will either create a better way of packaging smaller footprints or raise the cap
cause I was able to get a 3D Platformer down to 75MB after like 3 hours of work but I can't see that being reasonable in a game jam
you can also go into the package and delete the 40 MB redist exec
if you don't use a pak file the engine is 50mb but if you use a pak file its like 100 mb and the pak file is 60mb even when empty
and if you don't use a pak file your project is like 100 mb
lowest I can get an empty project is 130mb
think the biggest are compessed cooked packages, and exclude all the prerequisite stuff
that at least gets you going in the right direction

200mb to get a 3D game with content is doable. 100MB it's honestly still doable but much less so.

engine itself has loads of materials, meshes, and other content you can either delete, or replace all with just a 1 triangle mesh/4x4 texture, etc.

protip: keep those triangles vertices on grid (i.e. 0.0.0, 0.0.1, 1.0.0) and save a few bits :p

you can get into little over 50 megs just by adjusting packaging settings and no need to blacklist anything

@cosmic stag how are you placing your pawn in the world? dragging it in? does it have auto posses set to spawn and placed?
one is dragged in
the other is spawned on the spawnpoint
or NetworkPlayerStart to be precise
autoposses to the dragged in player is on player 0
its tricky getting all that lined up

Must be packaged for Android (for the Best Mobile Game Specialty Category, unfortunately there are limitations with iOS), Windows or Mac OS. No full, unpackaged projects. VR projects are accepted.```

What's really holding me back personally is my lack of experience with character modeling, rigging, and animating. Also with particle effects.

You can use share content by substance plugins or convert them into textures with their own free substance player
And share content is mostly done by users anyway

I finally got my boss AI to actually work. For 3 hours last night I was debugging why it would just sit still and never move XD
It was kinda hilarious since everyone on stream could just watch me struggle as I try to piece together what was going on.
So of course, first thing this morning after a good rest, I had it fixed in 10m.

I may actually see an end in sight XD I just got a mario-style camera working. And my boss AI doesn't seem broken. I just need to slap a level together, get the UI done, and then wait for the artists to finish the sprite sheets ๐

Just submitted my thing. This was my first solo jam (fifth overall) and I think what I got out of it was knowing for sure where my weak points are with the engine. On the bright side, I did a good job keeping my scope small enough so that I was able to never feel stressed and just casually make my thing over the weekend. I don't expect that it'll win anything, though. I just wanted to be able to make, polish, "finish", and submit a thing all by myself for once.
First jam was fun. I enjoyed it a lot
I sorta cheated on the textures tho :p

Haha! it was indeed.
The boss sprites couldn't get done on time and we had to use a pre-generated set and get the sprite animations and debug the boss AI in under an hour XD

@dire heart Really? Got to put in easter eggs too? I can see how the very blocky layout of the game can make level generation a lot easier though. But the game is quite polished.

We were only able to get 1 level for our game, but I like the think the level turned out pretty well and we got a megaman-style boss fight which I am quite proud of.

All my time went into figuring out why my collissions don't work properly

Last minute bug for the boss fight, I had to figure out why the tall vine was being spawned well into the ground and not at the same Z co-ordinate as the boss XD

Also was debugging for like 2h on why I was able to still move while attacking. Only to figure out I had a trigger in the level blueprint used to help with my camera control that was forcing the "CanMove" boolean to true even though my attack function wanted it false ๐

Sad side is i want to learn C++ as well, but all of them are in BP
True. But what you can do is code your modules in C++ code and then just call the C++ function in blueprint as a whole module.
That way all the code executes in native while the behavior tree only handles when to trigger them.

That's how I worked with engineers a lot at my previous studio.
They gave me basic AI functions like "Move to" and such, and I would use BP logic to just handle triggers and feed appropriate targets.

Epic's streams on AI are really good. The streams are long but super detailed.
Personally, I didn't know a single thing about AI in UE4, and from those streams (with a bit of supplimental reading from various sources) I went to making production level AI for a turn-based strategy game. ๐

Boss phases are actually really easy to handle in Behaviour Tree.
You can make a blackboard key that keeps track of your phases and have certain functions enable or disable based on what key you're on.

Since I discovered an hour after submitting the game that the generic enemy AI is broken and just charges at you instead of attacking XD

Hey I'm the douche who streamed the thing yesterday. I can't for the life of me figure out how to activate the Twitch option to archive my videos again. They keep resetting them every year and continue obfuscating the setting all the time for some reason.
As for my recommendations on what is good/bad: I gave a 5/5 to (off the top of my head) Petal to the Metal, Angry Angry Dad, Sprout, Sunflower Warrior, and Spring Armed. I played only everything on the first page of the submission thread, though.

I feel that @pine fulcrum gave up on gamejam playthroughs at bad moment, I get that it took him a lot of time when gamejams were a monthly thing but it wouldn't be as bad now if he only did it 4 times a year. He must miss doing it a bit too ๐
