Yeah, sometimes when I ask questions in appropriate channel it gets killed because someone spams or asks a question in like 10+ messages with a long ass code dump or something lol
Maybe we can have a real Unreal 'Slack' at some point

i'm still undecided about buying an expensive ryzen or not... if it'd really help with the compiling or not

#

it shows what are the most powerful processors but it's still a guess whether the improvement will be worth it when compiling UE4 c++

like... if it's only a 50% speed increase that's meaningless to me

Crap, I feel like I'm getting a fever

winter zealot
#

what do you mean by "jizz their pants" ?

#

you mean the more cores the better ? I'm unsure more cores or threads would help that much with c++ compiling

that's interesting tho

fresh heath

Definitely a fever 😩

Can't find the thermometer without waking up my parents

hah yes for some stuff more perf is good, it's great that at least shaders compiling is parallelizable in some way

How can i effectively learn unreal engine

tulip orbit
#

by not getting advice from the ppl in this channel. 😝

light spruce
#

Surprisingly astute advice, actually.

harsh jolt
#

So you wont suggest me videos or books ? 😦

tulip orbit
#

both could be helpful

#

lots of youtube vids on specific topics

lone grail
#

For me personally I learn best when I have a goal and find learning resources on the topics I need at the time to build my project, so for example think of a project you want to make and step by step look for tutorials on how to do it, you will learn Blueprints, the UI, and more quite effectively and you will get used to things a lot sooner... well in my experience that was the case, having a project as the base to your learning I find keeps you motivated and interested in learning πŸ™‚

light spruce
#

Also try pretending that your entire life is a documentary of your struggle towards success. You get character motivation, moments of drama and frustration that all add to the story.

#

And when you get stuck, you think... "What would character me do?" and the answer is "get a terrible headache because he hasn't had any caffeine and days, lose the matching hand towel to a bath towel realizing that he absolutely hates the other set of towels."

real palm
#

I would suggest that you could learn most effectively with the proper advice but ... well, ykno

lone grail
#

I have successfully solved what I needed to do next, now the next thing tomorrow, I hate only having barely an hour to do work each day 😦

light spruce
#

It does mean you effectively have to break things down into tiny pieces... and that's one of the best ways to make progress.

unborn lotus
#

that is very bad advice if you're doing a puzzle

lone grail
#

Yep that's how I do it and it's how I'm figuring out c++, I have a linetrace shooting out the camera detecting the normal of an object, so tomorrow I'm gonna use it for a weapon pickup which is just attaching to component which should be pretty easy to figure out in c++ too

broken sigil
#

He is not wrong tho
Every complex system I ever needed to implement I always broke down into smaller parts/systems that connect together in the end and make up the whole thing, it's easier to think about and imagine how smaller parts are gonna work than the whole thing at once

lone grail
#

Yeah it's the best thing you can do, and it makes everything make more sense I agree, best skill to learn

broken sigil
#

yeah, even drawing a "flowchart" (or whatever it's called) is a good idea if it helps you visualize things

lone grail
#

I use a board site like Trello for that, I'll have a card with the end goal and under that I'll have the mini objectives, I like being organized

broken sigil
#

yeah^^
Stuff like that can help a ton

lone grail
#

I also have 2 white boards, though I haven't used them in a long time lol

Working until after covid

delicate lark

ashen sundial

Office work is rarely necessary for most people, just unfortunately most people don't understand how to work without talking in somebody's face.

foggy path
#

I miss going out to lunch with coworkers sometimes

#

or playing NHL on PS4

#

lol

ashen sundial
#

And some people aren't productive at home alone which is understandable.

delicate lark
#

companies being more flexible regarding remote work is definitely a positive thing

#

but the whole question is way more complicated than in-office sucks, remote is the future

ashen sundial
#

Both are true πŸ˜‰

foggy path
#

I think it'll be interesting to see how VR and AR is going to affect this

#

You could already do a reasonable facsimile of a meeting in VR

#

of course the price of equipment, lack of real good software solutions etc. is a barrier

ashen sundial
#

If you have an idea for an XR productivity app, you need to start working on it now. That's gonna be the next hot ticket for a while, especially when devices get better and companies start shelling out for them in place of/beside laptops.

foggy path
ashen sundial
#

Facebook already has/is working on all that virtual office stuff for the Quest 2

foggy path
#

bam there you go millions in funding secured

#

oh sorry join.me is not the hotness anymore

#

zoom but for XR, there fixed

#

:D

ashen sundial
foggy path
#

it's still a bit too complicated at least with devices like Oculus Rift

#

Rift is great and "works", but it's not 100% reliable in the sense that sometimes you'll put the headset on, and everything's all fucky and you need to reconfigure everything

#

which is a no go for something like this imo

#

plus it's very location dependent unlike the Quest 2 and such

ashen sundial
#

Besides using my Vive for making some games earlier this year I had not used it since a few months after I bought it at launch. Once I took the base stations down I didn't wanna mess with them again.

#

VR needs lower price, no extra tracking hardware, and full wireless to become mainstream. Too bad the Quest 2 is tied into Facebook's ecosystem of garbage, it definitely hits most of the points.

#

my C++ is rusty as fuck but I'd still apply

cursive crypt
#

Go apply. ++c is not to learn in few months anyway.

foggy path

#

Yeah, if you know programming in general even if your C++ was rusty, I'd say apply

cursive crypt
#

"rust" next to "c++" word, blasphemy

foggy path
#

lol

lone grail
#

I've learned C++ before and decent at it, I'm just practicing the UE specific stuff and learning how to make my game with it

#

I made my complicated combat system in all C++ so that made me happy, my next step is picking up weapon and throwing, I did the linetrace last night so not too much else to get a pickup hopefully

cursive crypt
#

Go apply dude, what you have to loose? Show them who you are and what you do.

#

You gonna learn these and more while you work too.

#

ofc, I'm talking in general. No clue about that company.

lone grail
#

I just assume companies want people who can do it well right off the bat

cursive crypt
#

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ depends on the position and the company. Some want just a small help (lower expenses), other want more.

lone grail
#

The jobs I find around me mostly want senior, it's hard to find junior positions, but these days most companies are doing remote work so that does bring more opportunities to me as I live in the middle of nowhere

ashen sundial
#

Companies want people who are willing (and able) to learn and solve problems. The ability to Google & work through tough problems > knowing the ins & outs of specific languages.

#

Plus you've gotta apply + interview to know where your weaknesses lie anyways. πŸ˜› Your own self assessment may or may not be your reality.

lone grail
#

Damn I'm good at finding problems through google and problem solve my own issues, I have bad assumptions, I always feel like I'm not employable because I didn't go to school and I'm self taught, and hadn't worked professionally before, but I am confident when I work on my personal projects

foggy path
#

Don't self reject

#

:)

lone grail
#

I know it's hard though, and I'm just nervous of actually going through with it

foggy path
#

stuff you'd do at work is probably going to be much easier and much worse than what you do in your own projects anyway lol

ashen sundial
#

Degrees are only really a replacement for experience to get your foot in the door, most people don't care if you're self taught as long as you're confident you know what you're doing + can learn & can display that in an interview.

lone grail
#

I'm a perfectionist in my own projects, and I tend to do the hardest games I can think of haha like I'm making a first person Demon;s Souls inspired game with layered directional combat, it's fun working on hard stuff though

#

Ayy got my linetrace to correctly work with only actors with a tag, progress!!

Ugh... found a map breaking memory leak and bug with world comp and while I think I found a work around it requires manually loading each and every sub level one at a time, resaving it, unloading it and then moving on to the next one. This is very tedious.

light spruce
#

Just in the editor part or is that a runtime thing too?

plucky pagoda
#

It completely keeps the map from loading. Just starts devouring memory until it has none left to eat.

#

Packaging might fix it the same way I'm fixing it by manually loading/unloading each sub level. Idk though. Now that I think I know what causes it I'm going to change some things in how i do it to avoid it or make it easier to fix when needed.

#

I need to search and see if anyone else has had the same issue.

I think this fixed the level. It just went from eating up 60GB of ram to 12GB.

light spruce
#

Yeah. I compiled gentoo on a lot of things.

plucky pagoda
#

Slackware, Gentoo, Red Hat and Debian have been the main ones I've used. Every now and then I go on a spree of trying out distros though.

#

Haven't used Red Hat since it split into Fedora though.

#

I just don't have the time for it lately though.

light spruce
#

I used to use CentOS 7 which is basically just RHEL without the RedHat shit in it.

plucky pagoda
#

There was another BSD based one i use to like.

#

Right now I'd probably use Mint if I was going to run anything

light spruce
#

Now it's debian on my VM hosts and guests, opnsense for routing, and GalliumOS on my Chromebook... which is downstream from Ubuntu but somehow manages not to pull in some of the dumb shit Canonical throw in

plucky pagoda
#

I like their XFCE one

#

Yeah, Mint is Debian based. It's easier to find packages for Debian than others.

#

I never liked Ubuntu. I'm not hardcore about open software which is why I like using Debian but Ubuntu with its built in market stuff is too much

light spruce
#

I just do straight up debian with backports and updates

plucky pagoda
#

Mint's like a compromise between Debian and Ubuntu

#

Like back when flash was more prevalent Debian would make you look elsewhere for the packages, Mint would just give you the option to choose to install it

#

Same thing with proprietary drivers.

light spruce

that's why most people add the contrib and non-free repo

Goodmorning everyone

#

Yesterday I applied to a job in the game industry, first time of the year

mossy nexus
#

Who with?

lone grail
#

Rockstar Toronto

#

They're actually in a town further away but it'd be worth the commute, about 1 hr 20 min, but I applied because I'm feeling a bit more confident since the chatting here πŸ™‚

#

I doubt I'll get it, but it's a good step anyway

mossy nexus
#

Do you have a good portfolio?

lone grail
#

I have a small portfolio

mossy nexus
#

As long as it shows off your strengths via your own creations πŸ™‚

lone grail
#

I think they do, 2 are sculpts I did in zbrush, another is a logo I did using Blender box modeling and photoshop, and a realistic tree I did in blender, and I think a vehicle and something else I don't remember off the top of my head

#

Over the last while I've focused on programming, it'd be cool to do gameplay programming

foggy path
#

if you applied to a programming position you'd probably wanna showcase any game projects you've done or such

lone grail
#

Yeah, I have like a million prototypes but lack of animations make them look not great

#

Or my poopy animations make it look bad lol

foggy path
#

it probably doesn't matter that much as long as it demonstrates ability to do programming

#

you can balance it with showing some of the design work

lone grail
#

Most of what I have is done to show off is in UE blueprints not so much in code, I am confident with unity C# but I always have a hard time with player movement, anything else I can do, in UE C++ I'm getting there

foggy path
#

Yeah I mean as long as it shows you've got the skills you claim you have :)

#

BP's is programming too, it works based on exactly the same principles as text-based languages

lone grail
#

Yeah I actually find text based programming easier, but I just use artstation, I have a bunch of prototypes I've made on my youtube, I guess I should link that in my linkedin too

#

It's the brain work that matters

foggy path
#

I think my resume mostly just listed all the random projects I made that I thought were most interesting/impressive/relevant

#

(not in gamedev tho)

#

nowadays I don't really link my projects since I have tons of work experience, but I still link my blog and if any random other thing might be relevant

lone grail
#

I don't have a proper resume, the only things on my resume is retail and cooking, I'm desperate to get a job doing anything related to games, in the game industry

foggy path
#

yeah I mean if you make a resume then you'd just list all the cool projects you've done as relevant experience

#

doesn't matter if they're incomplete as long as it's relevant

lone grail
#

My current job doesn't support me doing any side things and so I only have like 3-4 hours a week to work on anything :(
Oh I applied to rockstar without a resume but my linkedin that I applied from shows what my experiences are

light spruce
#

I just want to setup a linkedin that includes nothing but shit like World of Warcraft raids

foggy path

lol

lone grail
#

Instead of Wow raids just say Wow QA lol

light spruce
#

Fuck no. I'd put down Bethesda games for that

lone grail
#

I added my youtube link to my About section of my linkedin as "Programming Showcase"

#

Nvm found a section for it lol

#

My youtube link shows my profile picture that is Kermit covered in blood... why can't I remove the picture from the linkedin reference lol

#

Owell it adds character

#

Since I don't have resume I hope my showcase does it instead

#

I don't think I'll ever get hired πŸ˜… lol

light spruce
#

But did you know that when it snows my eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen?

foggy path
#

"I don't have a resume" is a bit of a bad excuse imo

#

you know you can just make one?

#

lol

lone grail
#

I have nothing to put on there that is relevant

foggy path
#

You put your skills and projects

#

The point isn't to tell them "I worked at this and this company"

#

the point is to tell them "here's why I can do this job"

lone grail
#

My school did a shit job teaching us how to do resumes then lol

foggy path
#

yeah they tend to do that

#

:D

#

I think a lot of the advice for resumes is okay.. it's not technically wrong

#

but ultimately the goal is to convince the employer that you're the guy they need

#

enough at least to get you to the interview

lone grail
#

well I have no idea how to write such a resume lol

light spruce
#

You need buzzword compliance to get past the HR filter.

#

Then you need something that shows someone you might actually be useful.

foggy path
#

well, you can look at what sorta stuff the company does and then try to extrapolate from there

#

so if you're applying to programming positions, you explain why you can solve the programming problems they might have

#

list your knowledge in different programming languages and tools, list projects like "I built X using langs X, Y and Z with tech X. It does complex thing A B and C which I solved with so and so"

lone grail
#

I could explain the things I did in tools and languages, but I don't really know how to explain how I solved problems, I just kinda do it that's it lol

foggy path
#

yeah I mean you can put a short description of what the method you use to solve it was

light spruce
#

Okay. Hard truth then: You will have a shit time.

lone grail
#

Like at school I was never able to "show my work" in math class , because I just don't know how to visually show or explain how I just figured it out in my head

foggy path
#

eg. "The game has NPC's which I built using Unreal's Behavior Trees and custom behavior tree decorators" or something along those lines

light spruce
#

The absolute best thing you can be able to do is communicate how you did something

lone grail
#

Okay, I mean that probably explains why I haven't got far in life lol

fathom wadi
#

You got this far. Thats further than some

foggy path
#

You don't need to really show or explain how you figured something out in your head in a resume

#

You just give a description of what it does

#

You can just look at your code and give a high level description of that :)

#

"The game uses markov chain to generate video titles"

fathom wadi
#

When asked how I worked out my code I reply "Fucked if I know Bubba. Fucked if I know"

foggy path
#

is a pretty decent description of a potentially interesting thing

lone grail
#

Okay, and it doesn't really matter on a specific format, just kinda write a header and description with a paragraph to sumarize each experience?

#

Lol

foggy path
#

Yep

#

Think of it this way... the person who reads your resume is looking for a reason to get you to the interview

lone grail
#

Okay, I'll start working on one, I actually don't work until this afternoon so I have a little while

foggy path
#

So you need to think of how you'd convince this person you can solve problems for them

light spruce
#

That part comes out as knowing how to explain what problem you were trying to solve and generally how you solved it... not necessarily the exact process. But how you work through problems is going to come up at some point... so being able to communicate that is critical.

foggy path
#

Usually a decent way to do it is by talking about complex things you've done

lone grail
#

Being able to explain vocally is much easier than writing for me

foggy path
#

Yeah so just talk it out by yourself

#

and make notes of it

#

and then summarize it in text

summer tulip
#

fathom wadi
#

I've covered so many areas in computing since I started that I should just have a freaking search engine textbox on my resume.

light spruce
#

But you have to get there.

cursive crypt
#

i.e. and if you lied, still no chance.

fathom wadi
#

I never lie. I only use tact, which is a form of socially acceptable lying.

light spruce
#

It's not that binary

lone grail
#

I usually under-present myself

cursive crypt
#

That acceptable yeah. Also interesting is, it does not matter whether you can solve a particular problem. What matters is your process.

#

That what I think and my colleagues with whom we do interviews think.

lone grail
#

I have a good process, like beating up a brick, break off one small piece at a time until you glued it back together

#

I think I went one way and reversed it in that analogy but that's okay lol

foggy path
#

People need to take a page off Maddox's website for their resumes

fathom wadi
#

I always feel I do great during interviews. I have fake confidence, enough skills to back it up, I can talk up whatever they ask (or else why would I be there?). But sometimes it doesn't matter if you do the perfect interview. Sometimes you just don't look the part in the eyes of the interviewer.

foggy path
#

"This resume is about me and why I'm great" alex

lone grail
#

I'm always full of anxiety during interviews so I'm usually quiet and timid, but I've never got an interview for a game studio yet, I've only applied 12 times over the last 5 years though

#

maybe 20

fathom wadi
#

Oddly enough I suffer from anxiety on a daily basis, but in an interview I can stride past it

the only time I cannot is a coding test. That will cripple me

Re: buzzword compliance

#

It really is the joy of competing issues. You need the bullshit to get past the first layer and then you need to have enough not bullshit for the next layer to give a shit.

foggy path
#

Best way is if you can skip the first layer altogether by networking

lone grail
#

This is my networking lol

foggy path

most people won't mind telling you who to email directly or reference you directly if you ask them as long as you know them at least a little bit

lone grail
#

Crash zoom calls

foggy path

light spruce
#

foggy path
#

you can stalk people on LinkedIn

#

"hey could I ask you what it's like to work at <place of employment>, I was thinking of applying"

#

or something

lone grail
#

I'm always nervous to connect with people I don't know on linkedin

light spruce
#

"It fucking sucks and since I work from home now I don't even get free Mountain Dew anymore."

fathom wadi
#

Dont do networking on Twitter whatever you do. It's fine for making aquaintances who want people to advertise their products or ego at, but in terms of networking for work purposes, it has never once gotten me any work.

#

You do see a lot of jobs on there if you setup for it. I guess my volume of work applied for on there is a small test case, but still... horrid place. Horrid.

foggy path
#

If you can sort of "naturally" connect on twitter to someone in the industry, you could potentially ask them in DM's about something

#

but it's probably a bit more difficult to reach out directly unless you've talked with them a bit before

mossy nexus
#

Oddly, just read how a guy got a job because of Twitter

fathom wadi
#

yeah I probably overshot my experience a little for a generalisation

#

I just don't get much use out of it. It causes more stress than money.

#

It doesn't help when people are there to make you look shit on purpose either. So every single comment is taken out of context or used against you in a kangaroo court of lawlessness.

light spruce
#

If I had to choose between using twitter or facebook, I'd get matches and a can of gasoline.

foggy path
#

just don't talk to or follow people who are like that Marc

#

I just unfollow everyone who's like that and miraculously my twitter experience is tolerable now

fathom wadi
#

It doesn't matter. I was having a discussion one day and some trumped up tart from Insomnia Games decided to make it her mission to make me a child molester and sex offender. Insomnia wont even speak to me about it even though I've gone through the hoops. It fucking burns me.

foggy path
#

...what on earth were you talking about if she did that?

I saw a picture of a 17 year old girl and a 24 year old male (Australians) who were married. The comments below were all calling it grooming and I said they look happy to me, it's not grooming (they were married in a country where 16 is the age of consent).
But no.... apparently I am now a paedo, and, I quote "young girls should stay away from him".

Well they were bullying the couple and I don't stand by when I see bullying. I call them out.

#

its in my nature

light spruce
#

foggy path
#

yeah I mean it's good to do that but twitter is a bad platform for something especially if it's a touchy subject

#

absolutely respond if it's something slightly less touchy

#

lol

fathom wadi
#

whats touchy about it though? 17 and married. It's a no brainer to me.

#

These US folk are indoctrinated to presume you aren't an adult until 21 though.

foggy path
#

it's not like that everywhere so you're likely to get crazies like that

fathom wadi
#

yeah it was mostly US folks

foggy path
#

and at that point the best course of action is to just block the crazy person

fathom wadi
#

Well, when someone with 7.5k followers, at a prominent game studio announces you are a paedophile (or rather ephebophile in this case) what do you do?
I had over 1k likes from my comment. But as many insults.
What really bugs me about it is I contacted Insomnia 4 times. Even tried to connect with the head of the HR department on Linkedin because nobody was responding.
This tweet is still up there. This twat is trying to take food out of the mouths of my children for a comment I was completely justified in making. It's literally making me depressed and weepy. As soft as that sounds. I've had nightmares about it. I am now lost as to what to do. This was 3 months or so ago and I'm still fucking angry about it.

summer tulip
#

well tbh

#

I think profession and public opinion should stay separate, otherwise you can easily get in trouble

foggy path
#

Jeez

#

Honestly if it's that bad I would talk to a lawyer about slander...

fathom wadi
#

I have no money for legal help

foggy path
#

Yeah I don't know how it works over there but it sounds pretty clear cut so I'd imagine someone might take it even if you can't pay ridiculous sums of money for it

#

You could probably at least get a consultation on it for mostly free

#

at which point your message to Insomnia suddenly has a lot more weight when a lawyer penned it

fathom wadi
#

I tell you now.... this might sound like I should just get over it and get past it, but it's killed my motivation to do anything in game dev. I don't even know if I want to carry on.

#

if I ended up working with that class of people, I would rather shovel shit.

foggy path
#

That's the problem with twitter drama tbh

summer tulip
#

it aint only gamedev that suffers from hr sorting thru ur facebook

foggy path
#

For some reason the human mind immediately connects it on a very personal level like this

#

and then immediately also generalizes it to the whole group of people

#

even if it's just some rando who's lost their mind spouting bs

fathom wadi
#

my cathartic process is to insult the person then block them, never to hear from them again, but this is something else.

#

I dont want to be this angry. I'm angry enough on a daily basis at the state of the world, but when my escape (gamedev) is part of the problem, Im just not sure anymore.

#

anyway im gonna go cheer myself up with a huge hit on a bong. Fuck it.

#

have fun

foggy path
#

:D

#

Honestly I'd also maybe consider taking it to police

#

since slander is a crime

#

that shouldn't cost you a penny.

#

I think the one thing you can take comfort in is that if this twitter problem results in actual damage to you, eg. loss of job or something, at that point you definitely have a criminal case against them.

light spruce
#

a libel suit isn't quite that easy

foggy path
#

it seems fairly clear at this point based on what he said

#

at least it would get the ball rolling if it becomes a problem

light spruce
#

In most places it'd be civil, so you would have to file a suit yourself and prove that defamation

#

in the US, it'd be defamation per se so at least you don't have to prove damages

foggy path
#

frankly I doubt it's gonna be a problem for Marc if it's been months since then

#

but at least some level of comfort knowing he could take action on it if needed

#

if it was gonna be a problem it would have been a problem by now

light spruce
#

you can always take civil action, assuming you have the money to do it

#

I couldn't believe that Musk managed to skate on his, but he did

foggy path
#

huh?

foggy path
#

slang usage "'pedo guy' was a common insult used in South Africa

#

lol what a fucking thing to say

#

this is like.. "yeah it was okay to use the n word when I was growing up"

#

He probably greased the wheels of justice to get out of that... I wouldn't be surprised

light spruce
#

no one wants anything to do with being a jury in a civil case

foggy path
#

the american legal system is all kinds of fucky tbh

#

the whole idea of picking randos for jury duty ???

light spruce
#

it's... slightly more nuanced than that

foggy path
#

I mean probably, but it's still pretty fucky lol

fathom wadi
#

I don't want to take them to court tbh. What's the point? Some corp loses money and the person remains vile enough to do such things at the cost of others? Makes no sense. Taking the person directly to court? Civil case, takes years, costs loads, no legal aid, not worth it for a fake apology at the end of it all.

light spruce

When you're a defendant you can opt for a bench trial

Since my six weeks of insomnia has started, I'm going to go try not to fall asleep in the shower.

@lone grail I drowned when I was 4. It was ironically one of the most peaceful things once you submit to it. I was lucky enough that someone saw me and fished me out of the lake. I remember watching Trainspotting where he is swimming out of the toilet and thinking "thats exactly like the light I saw as I sank"

lone grail

Dang, I've heard stories like that when people are near death or die for a moment and it's the most peaceful and relaxing feeling which does sorta make sense. I'm too stubborn to give in lol, I'm terrified of going in water chest high, it gives me panic attacks, though my gf want to help me get better at swimming once covid is over and I agreed to it, might be fun

fathom wadi

I would go swimming but it would have to be in my own pool. I don't like being in the ocean. It's not my domain at all. I wouldn't go to a public baths either. I'd rather not swim in other people's psoriasis and piss

my question is how can you do anything at all with 5 kids..blows my mind

fathom wadi

lone grail
#

I worked 2 jobs once, after working 18 hour days 6 days a week I swore to never do it again, fucking rough doing 8 hour retail and then 10 hour cooking shifts back to back was a nightmare

fathom wadi
#

mine was pretty easy tbh. All 3 were part time. Tutoring for learning support, IT grunt fixing issues and for a time I ran the non-server side of the networking department whilst the team lead was sick

lone grail
#

Those jobs sound nice, I feel forever trapped in shit min wage retail jobs, I feel like walking out about 4 days of the week lol just can't do it anymore, My birthday was the first of my 8 day stretch and, today day 5 and just wanna collapse

fathom wadi
#

It was ok at first but the politics is just like any other job. If you don't fit the mould (which I rarely do) then people treat you with disdain. Like I used to be a busy body. Always trying to learn new ways to improve the network. They didn't like that. It was more work for them. They also didn't take to the fact I didn't slack off every Friday when they went to the pub. Not my fault I expect to work when im in a job but hey.
Eventually I was passed over for promotion to a kid who was kicked off his course for getting caught hacking the network. After all the work I had put in, plus I did the most perfect IT interview in history, I lost the will to do it and became a web developer instead, specialising in Flash/sql/php

#

I'd be screwed now if I had to go get a retail job. I'd probably end up like Brooks from The Shawkshank Redemption.

lone grail
#

Sounds like my job except convert to retail lol, I'm always running around getting shit done and I'm the one getting picked on, and making me feel like I'm doing a worse job than the useless employees that barely do anything, I work circles around people and get harassed for it

fathom wadi
#

yeah you would think that would be appreciate in IT circles too. I mean, one of the plans I had was a centralised image server for re-imaging workstations that would have saved thousands of trips around campus to put a floppy disk in a workstation and set it going. Literally would have let them sit on their arse for most of the day as that was usually the response to a failing PC. Just re-image it.

#

if I had been there longer, perhaps I would have been justified in a way as it lead to setting up virtual machines instead. Who knows. These people were wide-eyed at BO2k of all things so I didn't expect much.

Okay, I'm just trying to figure out how to write this resume before I go to work, so I can apply for work while at work lol

cursive crypt

Dude, you are kind of anxious aint you? I think I can understand, but after so much interviews... nothing special. You will do fine. When you get some experience there will be ground for improving. Wish you luck.

lone grail
#

Thanks, getting that experience is the tricky part, getting my foot in the door, I was gonna write a paragraph explaining each of my top 2 projects then the rest explain what I'm currently working on and skills I'm working on improving, I just wanted to know if that sounded like a good way to go about writing it

cursive crypt
#

That's to accompany your cv? You can, yea, sure.

lone grail

What's a cv?

cursive crypt
#

How you are exactly applying?

lone grail
#

Through LinkedIn

cursive crypt
#

hmm... I suppose they do that for you then.

#

tbh, never did something through that system. Kind of.

#

Then I guess your profile is up to date. But you want to send additional letter too?

cold mason
#

Nudes as anatomy references, I assume? (:

lone grail
#

My profile is up to date though I don't have a whole lot to put on there, I was told to do a resume thing to kinda show what I've done as personal projects and show I am employable i guess

cold mason
#

Well, I happen to have tens of thousands of them. Both male and female. :D

cursive crypt
#

lol, need micro details. in fact even one will do on this stage.

lone grail
#

What is an example of a micro detail?

cold mason
#

A skin pore level close-up? There are also many different types of pores, for different areas of the body. Mostly neutral and directional ones.

cursive crypt
#

Mhm, yea. something neutral will do on first step, depending on the evaluation might need more. So, do you know a place?

lone grail
#

I've done character work but never bothered with pores in texture design, looks super tedious

cold mason
#

But I don't really have specific references for those, except maybe some images can be high resolution enough to zoom and see.

#

But in general 3D.sk has great references.

cursive crypt
#

Yeah, I'm just diggin around currently. So ideas. Gonna check them out πŸ‘

#

Ah, yes... was looking at this one.

cold mason
#

Another great one is Surface Mimic site, but those are for actual use as sculpting/texturing, not references per se.

#

Also, Substance Source has tileable micro skin details/materials, but they're not references either.

cursive crypt
#

Yeah... I think there are enough texture sources. Gonna dig around. Thanks.

cold mason

3D.sk's references are something I use from time to time, but mostly I use anatomy books, 3D scans, Γ©corchΓ©s etc.

Lol

cursive crypt

I have a nice book over here, but is kinda painted, lol. 3d scans, if you have - ofc. But on that site there are many too.

I tend to look at A LOT of anatomy references to get things right on my sculpts.

"One of those too". That should be the primary concern.

It usually happens, I don't usually show many people my work

#

tbh you sound a lot like a friend of mine who's a self learned artist / vfx guy

#

he was like nah man I'm never gonna get a job

#

looking at his stuff is like okay yeah this is some pro level stuff

lone grail
foggy path
#

looks good to me lol

#

I like the purple mountain one

lone grail
#

Thanks, that one I did off a whim because I'm bad at 2d art so I messed around with vector art after seeing Firewatch art lol

cold mason
#

What kind of job you're trying to apply to? A game studio?

lone grail
#

Yeah a game studio, pretty much anything in a game studio

foggy path
#

yeah it definitely reminded me of Firewatch :)

lone grail
#

I just really want my foot in the door with something I can replace my current job

#

Oh that's good to hear πŸ™‚

#

I have my youtube linked on my linkedin as well to show functional things I did with programming, but it's just projects I've worked on and abandoned but they still show work

cold mason
#

Well, first you need to do fully finished, optimized and textured low poly game assets. With high poly models you've baked normals, ao, curvature etc. Materialized, textured, posed, lighted and rendered (real-time rendering such as UE4, Unity or Marmoset Toolbag) them.

lone grail
#

I know, I just have focused more on working on my games than the art side because I've been trying to make my own indie games but it's just I haven't done anything recently for the portfolio because it's just recently I wanted a job because my current job is being shite and giving me no time away from work to do anything so I haven't even had the time to do any art at all, for the forseeable future I'm stuck with what I got

#

I gotta get to work though, cya guys thanks for the input

foggy path
#

I found an old CV of mine where I've actually listed talking on servers like this as an item lol

#

under "Mentoring"

#

because frankly, that is what helping others on platforms like this is

#

just an unorthodox idea you can put into your CV :D

lone grail
#

Lol

cold mason
#

I hate to say this, but with that portoflio, you're gonna have very slim chances to get a job in the game industry. :/

lone grail
#

I know I probably wont get anything but I need to try or I dunno I feel stuck and done

cold mason
#

No matter the resume, CV or previous work experience.

lone grail
#

which is fuck all lol

foggy path
#

It sorta depends on how his game projects look like tbh

summer tulip
#

just needs more stuff imo. Finished stuff, aka game-ready assets.

foggy path
#

Not all gamedev roles need you to be some kind of gfx guru imo

#

I know my gfx skills is fuckall but I can code :P

lone grail
#

Yeah I might do more props and items focused around box modeling I might have time for that

cold mason
#

I'd recommend becoming a 3D prop artist. Start making props, but with a proper pipeline. (;

lone grail
#

My pipeline is usually model in blender then put into Ue4 lol

#

But gonna be late for work, so gotta get going

cold mason
#

That's fine. You can create HP, LP, UV unwrap the LP and even bake in Blender, and maybe texture it elsewhere, like in Substance Painter.

foggy path
#

I probably could make it look better, but frankly it won't make the game any more complete, so that will do for now :D

lone grail
#

I want to get substance Painter, so I guess this is a good excuse lol

summer tulip
#

ngl ive seen good stylized textures done in blender, but it's just a quicker and non-destructive workflow in substance. Especially if you need realistic results.

cold mason
#

We need them for game assets... still for now. :D

im thinking how much overhead a normalmap is sometimes

cuz some assets can surely go without

cold mason
#

With carefully face weighted vertex normals you can go a somewhat long way without normal maps.

Apparently UE5's Nanite is only for static meshes, raw dyntopo-sculpted characters are out of luck lol
@fresh heath Where are you getting that from?

fresh heath
#

@jovial quail I don't remember exactly but it was in Epic's official materials somewhere

#

As far as I remember, Epic didn't rule out skeletal meshes completely, but those won't be supported by Nanite on launch

jovial quail
#

So characters and moving meshes won't be supported soon

#

kind of disappointing

#

let's hope lumen delivers, at least one cmon...

fresh heath

Nanite reminds me of MegaTexture for some reason

#

Interesting

#

So they are all downsampled to 30 fps internally?

jovial quail
#

I think the standard is 30fps and going above that isn't somethings the developers though of so it's not going to benefit you

mint onyx
#

Nanite reminds me of MegaTexture for some reason
reasonable connection, as Virtual Texturing (Mega Texture) does share some ideas with Virtual Geometry (Nanite) @fresh heath

light spruce

That kind of texturing is the answer to "how do I skip draw calls?"

Question here, if you got a train game lets say, and it moves and generates random world where just spawn a 1km area around but can move forward indefinitely and where the player can walk outside of the train for some meters, what could be the best solution to solve this ?
World Rebasing is a thing but someone have any idea about what could be the best solution for this ?

foggy path
#

you could even move the assets instead of the player :D

#

sounds like rebasing would be a simple way to go about it though

median wraith
#

well as named isn't a solution

#

as the player can walk around

#

what you named work for cases ala linear moving things etc lets say Metro Exodus between maps the train is static and the background moves

#

here I need something ala Raft game

#

or minecraft, but without store the world

foggy path
#

I've not used world rebasing so not sure if it has some limitations but it sounds like a good way to do it

#

otherwise you'd have to manually move everything around or use some kind of other tricks to teleport the player and the world around from time to time

median wraith
#

the problem is on world rebasing the distance keeps don't ?

foggy path
#

what do you mean?
