#

Remember when BMWs were actually good cars, in EU modern bmw cars according to statistics are one of the most unreliable cars

#

"premium" brand

lone grail
#

BMWs here are notorious for being owned by asshats lol

broken sigil
#

yeah, every single BMW driver here is some bald annoying ass

#

with a punchable face

lone grail
#

I've seen so many BMWs in the ditch in the winter, and rear ending people buuuuut same with minivans lol

light spruce
#

So many people don't know how to drive

broken sigil
#

lol did you see in their new cars they will have heated seats as a yearly subscription 🤦‍♀️

lone grail
#

Yes 96%

#

Wait what?

#

I have 2 heated seats free of charge lol

broken sigil
#

yeah, need to find the article lol

light spruce
#

The on-disc DLC of cars

lone grail
#

Yeah I liked the older ones like that, good to do stuff with

light spruce
#

It's cheaper to have a more unified production line and then software lock features that you upsell

lone grail
#

Once they went rounded that's when it went down hill

light spruce
#

The new 6-series that looks almost exactly like a Mustang

#

sorry. 8-series

north torrent
#

Do Mustangs look like Mustangs?

light spruce
broken sigil
#

I have subscriptions I'm paying like every 3 years but that's for 4G connectivity and network services for the car but not for the god damn heated seats, a piece of hardware you already paid for and then have to pay again to activate it

Old BMW cars were actually good, new ones nahhh.... that's what you get with a "premium" brand that's counting on the glory from the old days

north torrent
#

Neither of those look like a Mustang...

lone grail
#

How would they shut off the heated seats feature if you don't pay? or do they just send a letter saying "bring back your car or pay for heated seats"?

light spruce
#

It's all software controlled. It's not like you're physically turning on power to heating coils.

lone grail
#

So they are always remotely connected to your car?

broken sigil
#

yeah

lone grail
#

Screw that lol

light spruce
#

Hell, probably. But that's not even necessary for it to be constant.

#

It wouldn't be terribly difficult to make a hardware bypass... but the better solution would be to just not buy shit from them.

lone grail
#

Lol true

foggy path
#

wait are they really charging periodically for heated seats or is this just a hypothetical?

broken sigil
#

My car has network services but nothing hardware related is locked behind a subscription, only the connection is what I'm paying for, like a phone
I get updates from time to time for my car, it downloads the update and installs it (newer thought I would say that for a car lol)
Got a few UI updates but the last one was for improved automatic emergency braking and proximity alert

lone grail
#

"Over the air updates" is what they are calling it, and it's "Features such as heated seats" so not just?

foggy path
#

🤔

light spruce
#

that was the brief thing I read about it

foggy path
#

I mean that sort of makes sense if they can reduce the cost of manufacture and thus the initial purchase cost of vehicle

#

but if not then no

#

:D

lone grail
#

BMW in 2025 "Subscribe to turn the wheel" lol jk

foggy path
#

I don't think a single car here is sold without heated seats as standard

light spruce
#

Reduce their production cost. And that's it.

foggy path
#

the ones which don't have heated seats here are always imports :P

lone grail
#

How many buns need frostbite before they drop this idea? lol

broken sigil
light spruce
#

I want more cooled seats.

foggy path
#

They're just going to start losing customers if they paywall shit tbh

light spruce
#

Fuck automatic high beams.

lone grail
#

Where is here ponkkis?

light spruce
#

Automatic high beams. Automatic wipers. That shit annoys me.

foggy path
#

automatic wipers is nice tbh

broken sigil
#

Automatic high beams. Automatic wipers. That shit annoys me.
@light spruce you are the exact opposite of me lol

lone grail
#

Aye makes sense lol, we get pretty brutal winters here in Canada too

foggy path
#

never driven a car with auto high beams so wouldn't know :P

light spruce
#

I don't want shit doing things on its own out of nowhere.

#

It's distracting.

#

Also, I never use my highs anyway.

lone grail
#

Driving relaxing, bird shits on window and wipers come up "AHHHHHH" lol

foggy path
#

at least in my car the auto wipers is just a mode on the wipers

#

off, auto, fast, superfast

#

so you just turn it on auto if it's not raining that much

broken sigil
#

it depends from 1 system to another, on some cars high beams take ages to react and on other it instantly turns them off if it sees another car

foggy path
#

high beams are pretty much a necessity at night when driving somewhere without street lights

light spruce
#

My dad had a Lexus that had all that auto shit. Drove it a few times. Drove me nuts.

foggy path
#

I understand it if it's a sports car or something

#

but a Lexus is supposed to be comfy so it would make sense in that lol

light spruce
#

I live in a place as described. Still don't use highs. Then again, I also always have to wear sunglasses.

lone grail
#

I use high beams a lot since I live in a forest, I get blinded by high beams after turning mine off, the other car doesn't 😦

broken sigil
#

Recently drove my parent's car which doesn't have all that and I had to remember how to turn the lights on lol

lone grail
#

My low beams and fog lights are auto and it's nice but that's it

foggy path
#

the EU regulations on day time running lights are stupid

#

because of that you see cars with basically no lights on in the back sometimes at night because people think they have their lights on

light spruce
#

I'm annoyed that I can't turn off the head lamps while still leaving the fog lamps on

foggy path
#

Why would you want to have your fog lamps on if you don't have your headlights on anyway lol

light spruce
#

That's everywhere because a company was too cheap to put in a 50 cent photosensor for automatic lights

foggy path
#

nah it's not because of lack of sensors.. they are in there but the regulations are why they don't turn on more than just the daytime running lights

broken sigil
#

@light spruce if you don't like automatic stuff wait till you try automatic lane assist lol
I have 3 options, automatic correction, vibrate only or off, had to set it to vibrate, it's such a weird feeling when the car starts steering on it's own

foggy path
#

or at least that's my understanding, could be wrong

light spruce
#

The original point of fog lamps was because they're lower on the car, it doesn't immediately turn everything directly in front of you into a grey mess you can't see through.

foggy path
#

since on older cars where you have those lights they still turn on normal low beams as well

north torrent
#

I just don't like newer cars.

foggy path
#

it's only really the high beams in my experience that are problematic in fog

light spruce
#

I would never, ever use lane assist.

foggy path
#

at least I never found low beams annoying in fog so no reason to turn those off and keep fog lights on

north torrent
#

I will stick with my 2006 car until gasoline powered vehicles are obsolete.

broken sigil
#

I'm all for new cars and new tech, some people prefer that and some prefer older cars which you can customize

foggy path
#

yeah lane assist is a peculiar concept tbh

light spruce
#

Highs in fog you definitely can't see jack shit

foggy path
#

it's like.. it's okay to be distracted just a little

#

:P

#

radar cruise control is great but lane assist uhh yeah no thanks :D

light spruce
#

I know how to drive, so the less computer fuckery going on the better

broken sigil
#

it's like meant to keep you in lane in case you fall asleep for example, I had to set it to only vibrate, such a weird feeling when it's starts steering on it's own

Great invention on modern cars is emergency braking, especially if it's one of the better implementations, I can see how it can prevent a lot of accidents

foggy path
#

yeah emergency braking is good

#

my mom had a small collision because she was turning and the car in front suddenly slammed on brakes for no reason and she was looking to see if anyone was coming from the side

#

emergency braking system would have prevented that

broken sigil
#

yeah 100%

light spruce
#

That one is actually a useful feature if the implementation isn't shit.

#

However, ABS can go die in a fire

broken sigil
#

The thing is with my car you can turn of all the assists if you don't want them, it's up to you
I think all manufactures should be doing it like that so you can choose, there are a lot of them which force you to use it

foggy path
#

ugh nope

#

ABS is great in winter :P

plucky pagoda
light spruce
#

knowing how to use your brakes is even better

foggy path
#

yeah except it's kinda difficult to threshold brake when the grip level changes constantly

#

especially if you're simultaneously trying to avoid hitting a deer or something lol

light spruce
#

do you left-foot brake?

foggy path
#

not unless I'm playing rally sims :P

light spruce
#

Then you should already know why you should take up left-foot braking

foggy path
#

eh, benefits of it are kind of dubious on the street

#

You wouldn't even get the reaction time benefit because you wouldn't be driving with your foot on the pedal the whole time unlike when racing

broken sigil
#

with manual transmission is more difficult because you also need to be ready to jump on the clutch

light spruce
#

it's faster for me even without having my foot on the pedal. If the throttle and brake were on a more even plane it might not be as big of a difference. But coming up to a crest or a blind corner, I've got my left foot on the pedal already.

foggy path
#

well I guess if you're 100% focused it might help

#

accidents often don't happen when you're 100% focused though :D

light spruce
#

in slippy conditions, the big thing is just that you aren't having to lift totally off the throttle to apply the brake

foggy path
#

I'm not quite sure how being able to keep some throttle on would help me avoid a moose that decides to jump in front of my car on a pitch black section of the road :D

light spruce
#

It's not going to help you on the moose

foggy path
#

yeah so I'm not quite sure what you're suggesting with it then

light spruce
#

you were talking about ice earlier

foggy path
#

well yeah

light spruce
#

it's more about keeping sudden weight transfer from contributing to throwing the car in a ditch for that kind of road condition

foggy path
#

I suppose

#

If you trust yourself to be 100% alert in all conditions then that's great

#

I'm a decent driver and fast enough in a sim... but I wouldn't trust myself to do that lol

#

thankfully I haven't had to test it out in a real life situation but ABS and TCS are something I wouldn't really want to drive without because when you're distracted and shit hits the fan... yeah I don't know if I'd be able to quickly react in the right way :P

light spruce
#

I don't like them because they add another variable.

#

Traction control has tried to put me into a rock wall before

foggy path
#

That sounds pretty bizarre :P

#

never had any issues with TCS... I guess if you're not expecting the car to have it then it could be unpredictable

#

ie. if it starts correcting oversteer and you're correcting oversteer.. you'd end up on the wrong lane probably

#

but I know what it does when it kicks in so it seems to work just fine and it actually helps correct slides that I couldn't really correct with just inputs because it can individually apply brakes at each corner

light spruce
#

Driving down a dirt road with a bit of slip... no problem until it freaked out and tried to slow the front left wheel down which caused the car to then rotate quite unexpectedly.

foggy path
#

that sounds awkward

#

I have heard not all of them work so great

light spruce
#

the problem is hysteresis

#

It doesn't know anything. It doesn't know intent. It doesn't know what's coming. It only knows that the current values have shifted from the previous values into a threshold that triggers something.

#

Like when the ABS flips out when I'm slowing down at the end of my driveway where there's some amount of dirt and loose gravel. And it's a situation where even if I completely locked the wheels and could actually slide across that surface it would stillstop in a shorter distance than with the ABS

foggy path
#

you sound like you drive like a maniac lol

#

those systems are definitely gonna spaz out if you're pushing the car to the limit on purpose

light spruce
#

I definitely know how to do that. But the driveway thing? That's literally just me driving totally normal and reasonable before coming to a stop to turn onto the street. And at least twice a month, with maybe 20% brake pressure, it'll hit the ABS and I just have a dead pedal until it decides that I'm allowed to tell it when to stop.

foggy path
#

That sounds pretty weird

#

Mine doesn't behave like that even on snow :P

light spruce
#

Yeah. It's frustratingly stupid.

foggy path
#

I can understand why you'd be so negative about those systems if you've driven cars where they were all fucky like this lol

light spruce
#

I had a lot of experience driving without any of that shit. So it's really just something that kicks in when I don't expect it to and is something I have to react to instead of whatever is actually going on

#

I think it's only iced over once since I've had this car. And I had to put in the fucking Konami code to turn everything off so that I could get it back up the driveway.

foggy path
#

lol

#

sounds like that car has really bad systems for that

#

I drive all winter here and we get tons of snow and ice and no problems whatsoever with any of it :P

#

traction control in particular is helpful when you have too much torque at the rear wheels even with careful throttle application lol

light spruce
#

it's pretty dogshit on front drive though

#

you're not exactly super likely to have some crazy oversteer happening there

#

if I go out just to drive through the backroads and shit, I pull the fuse for the entire ABS/TCS/torque limit systems

broken sigil
#

modern systems (with decent implementation) if it notices that a wheel is starting to slide it's gonna try to correct it but it also reads the steering input so it tries to correct you in a way that both will prevent you from sliding and keep you going where the steering wheel is pointing, now this depends how good the manufacturer implemented this

light spruce
#

Yeah, it's really about what settings get used. And without any kind of adjustment for how much of a moron I am, it's incredibly conservative.

Switched to TKL keyboard lately and I miss numpad enter. That's the only key I was using from it.

north torrent
#

Well, this isn't for my main rig, this is for my school desk.

#

My main rig has a full size keyboard. My desk at school has limited space because I am running the laptop and have a monitor and have a bunch of elementary school papers and scissors and glue stick and colored paper.

#

The laptop has a number pad, but I can't type as fast on a laptop keyboard or space it away from the screen like I would want.

zinc matrix
north torrent
#

Nah, I just want the feel of an oldschool keyboard.

mossy nexus
#

Go to a school and steal one

north torrent
#

Just the act of typing on a good tactile keyboard brings me happiness. Some people like to drink and go to parties or dance or go to music concerts or Disneyland or whatever else... I find my happiness from nice typing.

#

I work at a school...

#

They have cheap keyboards.

rigid shoal
#

I love cheap keyboards.
I use 25$ Dell ones, but on my main computer I use a 11$ one (which is my favorite).

mossy nexus
#

Until recently I've used crappy keyboards. Bought a mechanical one (Gamermax Strike) for £35 and it's amazing.

north torrent
#

Why does that not surprise me?

rigid shoal
#

Mechanical keyboards are overrated.

mossy nexus
#

No, mechanical keyboards are generally over priced

north torrent
#

Not everyone enjoys the finer things in life.

Like banjos, stew, and mechanical keyboards.

rigid shoal
#

Yeah, over priced. But unless you buy the Blue switches... the other ones are actually almost no different from membrane.

north torrent
#

Obviously I am in the minority when you look at how well 13 inch laptops and tablets sell.

#

Those things make me sad honestly.

rigid shoal
#

Dude, 13 inch laptops and iPad minis are pretty awesome.

mossy nexus
#

Comparing my old Logitech keyboard with this one.. this one has greater tactile responses which means faster typing

rigid shoal
#

Those big iPads are too big.

north torrent
#

Knowing that authors will write stories on tablets and phones or that game designers will sit in a bed with a laptop... It makes me substantially sad honestly.

rigid shoal
#

🤷 What's so great about desktops? Besides computing power, they're pretty unfortunate.

#

Phones are stupid, though. That's true.

north torrent
#

Sitting at a real desk with a keyboard spaced away from a monitor in the proper position is one of the greatest joys in my life.

rigid shoal
#

You don't get back pain? I've tried chairs, posturing, etc, my back just gets fatigued.

north torrent
#

Laptops cause me neck pain from the wrong position of the screen in comparison to the keyboard.

#

I never get back pain. If I sit for 10-12 hours my butt will start to hurt a bit, but that's to be expected.

#

I guess I could get a better cushion for my chair or something.

rigid shoal
#

I don't have one... but try a Purple seat cushion (or pillow for sleeping).

#

I just bought a Purple pillow, it's a little overpriced, but it's quite interesting.

north torrent
#

My pillow is certainly made out of a purple rubber material. But all the branding on the box is in Chinese and I can't read it.

#

I bought it off of TaoBao.

#

It looks like what Google just showed me when I searched Purple Pillow.

rigid shoal

rigid shoal

Okay, I guess you don't need a Purple pillow. But I will say that that Purple pillow version is probably significantly different in feeling from the Harmony.

zinc matrix
#

lol $159 for a pillow. I'm glad I don't use pillows at all.

rigid shoal
#

A lot of pillows are 80 - 100, anyway.

north torrent
#

Mine was about 600rmb.

rigid shoal
#

That's pretty expensive.

zinc matrix
#

cursive crypt

north torrent

#

At least the one I have does.

cursive crypt

rigid shoal

north torrent

cursive crypt

@ancient ingot did you know about this ?

#

🤖

#

reminds me of a steam game

cursive crypt
#

Reminds me of other things.

fringe sundial
#

@median wraith that thing is bottlenecking

#

on cpu and others

#

from my own engine, loading from nvme is much faster than SATA SSD, and sata ssd is still much faster than normal hard disk

#

because in my engine the load code is essentially copypasta binaries from a file into the gpu

median wraith
#

How the new nvidias change that?

#

With the new direct method to load into gpu without CPU

ancient ingot
#

@fringe sundial you have your own engine? 😮

fringe sundial
#

@median wraith its an absollutely massive improvement

#

if i could do that, my loading code would run at pure disk bandwidth and would be stupid hyper fast

#

@ancient ingot its a toy i use for playing around with Vulkan

#

@median wraith to upload a texture in vulkan:

ancient ingot
#

ahh vulkan, is that ever going to get super good for desktops in unreal?

fringe sundial
#

grab the texture from the binary file, copy it into a CPU-side vulkan buffer (probably ringbuffer or similar, to keep beetween uploads)
create a GPU side buffer for the texture
create a vulkan copy buffer command to copy from CPU to GPU
execute the copy
wait some time till stuff executes
finalize the texture

#

with the ssd-to-gpu workflow:
find where in the binary file is the texture data
create gpu side buffer for the texture
create a command that copies the texture from disk to gpu
execute it
wait till execution finishes
finalize texture

#

there is no need for that whole CPU side upload buffer bullshit, and loading many files at once becomes much easier

#

as to load many files at once, you would do something like save all texture requests of a frame, and at the start of the frame, you build a upload command buffer that uploads ALL textures. Its miles more efficient

#

in my engine, to upload textures, i have several CPU upload buffers that i rotate, and i have a thread dedicated to the uploads. THe thread grabs N requests (as many requests as it fits into one of the 100 megabytes upload buffers), and then i load all those textures from disk, copy to that buffer, and execute the command. Next frame i do the same, but with the second upload buffer. The upload buffers rotate up to 3. The main issue is the 300 megabytes of RAM im spending on upload buffers, plus having a cpu thread pegged to do uploads. On the ssd to gpu thing, i wouldnt need either upload buffers or cpu thread

light spruce
#

How does it not use a cpu thread to handle the disk IO?

fringe sundial
#

thats the whole point and why its fun tech @light spruce

cursive crypt
#

Yeah, been wondering.

fringe sundial
#

because it doesnt need to. You just encode "copypasta" commands that the SSD and gpu use

#

so you create a gpu side buffer, and then encode a "copy X bytes from A to B" command

cursive crypt
#

Maybe they offload to the hw controllers,?

fringe sundial
#

yup

#

its basically a copypaste command

#

from ssd memory to gpu memory

#

thats how SSDs work for cpu too

cursive crypt
#

Hmm... Yeah, this in general may open gates to code the hw directly.

fringe sundial
#

but the copypasta details are done by the OS

#

so when you read files on a SSD, the OS launches copypasta commands to the SSD controller/driver

#

and copies it into RAM

#

and then it gives you that data for your application

#

tho ssd to gpu needs a different controller/motherboard so that the SSD has connection to the gpu

cursive crypt
#

I suppose its all standardized protocol down there. But you need some kind of interface to it. Easier than doing the OS stuff is doing.

fringe sundial
#

yes, thats also the fun part of it, its super simple

#

you just do copypasta

#

hey i want to copy N bytes from this adress in the SSD to this adress on gpu/ram

#

and the copypasta itself happens async, done by the SSD controllers

light spruce
#

Oh. That's why I was confused. I thought you were talking about actually doing this on regular hardware now... and I couldn't figure out how it would work because of the physical layout

fringe sundial
#

you cant do it on current layouts

cursive crypt
#

What hw you need for that you say?

fringe sundial
#

thats why its a big deal for consoles

#

well, a motherboard that has connection from SSD slot to gpu

#

and a modern gpu

light spruce
#

Yeah, now I get what you were talking about

fringe sundial
#

and a modern SSD

cursive crypt
#

Oh, so its very new tech.

fringe sundial
#

yup, its not supported yet on the pcs

#

its a console thing

#

but the idea of this system, is that you will be able to run the disk at full throttle without pegging a cpu thread

#

so if you have 1 gigabyte of textures

#

and your ssd is 4 gigabytes a second

#

it will take 0.25 seconds to upload all

cursive crypt
#

Well, good years to come then. Waiting for some framework to handle these. SSD <-> GPU, Audio <-> SSD, SSD <-> Network... ye

fringe sundial
#

because you just build a command with a thousand texture load copypasta requests (and reserve 1 gb of gpu memory), and let the SSD stream everything

cursive crypt
#

Yeah, sounds good ofc.

fringe sundial
#

in the consoles, the ssd controller also has systems to prioritize requests

#

so you can send those 1000 texture requests at low prio

#

and then still load your meshes at high prio for example

#

while the texture requests keep going on the background over time

#
  • it can do (Simple) decompression on said copypasta command
#

so you can have your textures stored in .zip format, and it will also decompress while copypasting

mossy nexus
fringe sundial
#

honestly, if you have load screens

#

at all

#

in the new consoles

#

your engineering team is trash and should be fired

#

with how stupid fast the system is, a decently made engine should be able to upload all assets instantly

#

in my crappy engine i would be able to load stuff like my test scenes (1000 textures, hundreds of meshes, 3 gb of data) in 0.5 seconds

cursive crypt
#

I understand, but I know that hw and sw are on loop for eternity. In this case artist gonna stuff a lot in that pipe.

median wraith
#

"if you have load screens your engineering team is trash and should be fired" xDD

cursive crypt
#

If you have empty room you fill it in.

light spruce
#

sigh "That's what she said."

fringe sundial
#

@cursive crypt you can fill the entire VRAM of the console in 2 seconds

#

if your load screens take more than 3, your systems are trash

#

and at sub 3 seconds, you can hide the loadscreen behind a fade-to-black or animation

foggy path
#

meanwhile I have like five textures and I still get texture popin on level load in UE4 :X

light spruce
#

But without loading screens, where will they put those useless tips???????????????

cursive crypt
#

So much art will be wasted without them.

fringe sundial
#

i expect the next generation to be full of open world games, or at least seamless experiences god of war style

#

in god of war they stopped you SO MUCH on slow doors and similar to slow down traversal so that the engine can load things

#

but on next gen that is unnecesary

#

they also have hardware-assisted texture streaming, so that engines can implement texture streaming in a faster and more accurate way

ancient hornet
#

can you like, uncompress data on the fly?

#

to store textures in zlib compression on the SSD for example

light spruce
#

Yeah, there's no way that Kratos has nipples anymore

ancient hornet
#

on that topic, how did you try that tech btw? 😛

#

https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/directstorage-is-coming-to-pc/
ok seems it handles decompression anyway, not sure which algorithms are used but some form of compression is done

Earlier this year, Microsoft showed the world how the Xbox Series X, with its portfolio of technology innovations, will introduce a new era of no-compromise gameplay. Alongside the actual console announcements, we unveiled the Xbox Velocity Architecture, a key part of how the ...

fringe sundial
#

@ancient hornet consoles do implement compression during that copypasta operation

#

zlib

#

tho there are also other fancier algos

#

ps5 has Kraken spec, and xbox i think is Crunch or something

#

havent tried either

ancient hornet
#

so DirectStorage is an API you can use everywhere, but if you want to skip the CPU you need a GPU that implements the decompression itself I guess? like the RTX 30 series

I have blues for my main typing keys. Clears on modifiers, arrows, PTT

icy minnow
#

miss mechanical keyboards a bit, for no reason? Maybe nostalgia.

sage ermine
#

I'm very happy with my 22$ keyboard from jb hifi

light spruce
#

There are quite a few different split layout mechanical boards

north torrent
#

My main keyboard cost me about 80rmb but it is great for typing. This new one cost 10x that...

icy minnow
#

Yeah, I suppose I should look around.. and stop being a scrub 😄

sage ermine
#

You know, now that your old keyboard has alerted everyone to the fact that you're behind the bookcase, getting a new one won't exactly unalert them now they know

light spruce
#

A lot of the custom/semi-custom split setups are actually separate pieces

icy minnow
#

I've seen those. I think I'd probably get annoyed? I have no experience to back that up though

#

I'm always looking for something ergonomic to try to see if it's better, and those odd layouts have showed up a few times

sage ermine
#

you don't need to back up keyboards

#

they're hardware not software

icy minnow
#

er, not layout, but configurations? whatever.

light spruce
#

So you can arrange them how you want... and they'll have some kind of cable that connects the two sections. I've seen them use TRS, SATA, and USB C

icy minnow
#

I've been trying to promote my kids to switch to ergonomic mice/keyboards, stubborn. hah

#

It's blasphemy when I recommend they game with a gamepad lol

north torrent
#

I just have to get used to this shorter shift key. It is the only thing about this keyboard that is slowing me down right now.

sage ermine
#

maybe lower your seat

icy minnow
#

Those shorter shift keys / backspace keys are infuriating, I feel your pain

light spruce
#

It's been a long time since I've used an "ergonomic" keyboard.

north torrent
#

My work laptop that my job gave me has the shift key moves to the left of the up arrow... Worst layout ever. I can't type with it.

sage ermine
#

Just use cortana then

north torrent
#

It is a model sold exclusively in Chine, so I guess nobody told them how dumb the keyboard layout was.

sage ermine
#

she has speech recognition

icy minnow
#

I seem to just be buying some variant of the microsoft sculpt keyboard. I got annoyed with their wireless variant recently .. very intermittent occasional blip in connectivity. If I wasn't in an IDE always I probably wouldn't even notice it, so I just picked up a wired one around christmas, but .. meh, I wanna try something new.

#

just use cortana, lmao

light spruce
#

RSI is one thing... but CTS is going to be more dependent on your overall wrist position. As well as your particular genetics and other random-ass variables

sage ermine
#

Don't laugh at his jokes, you'll just encourage him

icy minnow
#

yeah, I try really hard to keep my hands neutral, rather mouse or keyboard

#

and wrist y'know, not at any odd angles, etc

light spruce
#

I wouldn't bother using one at this point personally.

icy minnow
#

PSA: focus on healthy practices is more important than hardware, but some hardware really makes that challenging

sage ermine
#

the mouse or the keyboard?

icy minnow
#

I've had to switch everything, so I use a touchpad (magicpad2, all the other ones seem subpar) and aforementioned keyboard. I'm relatively young and was having problems, but I've been into computers since a wee lad 😛

north torrent
#

I bought a silent mouse. You can't hear it click.

light spruce
#

I would wind up having to double up on some of the edge keys to use a split layout.

icy minnow
#

too much IRC & old MMOs as a kid

#

the split on my keyboard isn't super dramatic, so I haven't really had to change much

#

I noticed it a lot more at first, because the keyboard has this weird thing to help with your wrist position, it's like a inverse tilt (tilt is under your palm, on front of keyboard, rather than the back of keyboard)

#

but after getting use to it, only thing i miss is my clickity clacks.

light spruce
#

I reach further across when gaming.

icy minnow
#

oooh, i don't game much. so fair there

light spruce
#

Y is my map key

icy minnow
#

and when I do it's with a gamepad, cause it gives my hands a break from coding lol

#

oho, makes total sense.

sage ermine
#

Aight

#

well speaking of code

#

I best get back to it

north torrent
#

Well, I am at 66wpm with this new keyboard but still missing the shift key from time to time.

light spruce
#

WSAD can die in a fire

icy minnow
#

thats how it goes ioFlow 🙂 have a good one bud!

light spruce
#

The only reason I could see you having issues with the smaller shift key is because you're used to reaching further across because of of ISO layouts

north torrent
#

70wmp on my regular keyboard.

light spruce
#

because the left edge is in the same place for an ANSI layout

north torrent
#

I keep my hands at an odd angle.

icy minnow
#

wags finger

#

😂

light spruce
#

Because I also have a 1.75U right shift

icy minnow
#

1.75U?

north torrent
#

So my right hand seems to lose its anchor without the normal shift key. I'll probably get used to it in a few days.

icy minnow
#

sorry i'm nosy and always curious, what's that?

north torrent
#

Maybe it will force me to correct some of my bad habits.

light spruce
#

Or maybe that's 1.5. I don't know if the measurement is from the top or the base of the keycap

#

Units. As in a multiplier based on the standard key size

icy minnow
#

and speaking of right shift. Has anyone here managed to actually use right shift for left shift habits? I'd love to get my left pinky a break, but man. I can't break the habit of shifting with left hand lol

#

ahh! OK

north torrent
#

But this keyboard will be very quiet and it will be small for fit on my work desk with my laptop, monitor, and all the elementary school supplies I keep on my desk.

icy minnow
#

I kinda sorta thought units, but wasn't sure. Thanks for clarification.

north torrent
#

I shift way more with the right hand.

light spruce
#

It's typically most relevant for space bars

icy minnow
#

My mind is blown @ that Mao.

north torrent
#

You use shift on the spacebar?

icy minnow
#

Naw, he's talking about unit measurement of the keys

light spruce
#

the u size

icy minnow
#

I'm yapping all over y'alls convo, pardon.

north torrent
#

My left hand types a lot of the letters that proper typing position would give to the right.

#

I type N with my left hand for example.

icy minnow
#

gasp

north torrent
#

T, H, and N

icy minnow
#

t makes sense...

north torrent
#

Sometimes Y as well.

icy minnow
#

oh no

#

clearly you're one of those mimmicks or something

north torrent
#

Actually, almost always why not that I am watching myself.

light spruce
#

I've had my right space bar set to shift for a couple of days. Pretty sure that I won't wind up adopting that as a fulltime thing.

north torrent
#

I only use the left shift key to do U J M and over.

icy minnow
#

that probably took a minute to get acclimated too, hehe

#

i find breaking computer habits to be challenging. I remember being in despair switching to touchpad

#

Thankfully, with microsoft's precision touchpad drivers, you can program it now. So now for all but very specific things, it's faster for me

light spruce
#

I've always alternated shift because I learned how to properly type

#

comma assholes

icy minnow
#

lol I look like I type properly, but you can tell it's not like they teach if you look close enough

#

There wasn't much literature in the early 90s on proper typing, that I had access too, anyway

#

just wing commander and bleeding edge hardware for running quick-dos baby

light spruce
#

I only use a trackpad on my notebook now. Used to use one on a Mac that I had largely to run comms apps on

icy minnow
#

yeah, it's definitely something you have to /do/ intentionally. I remember it was a very rough switch for me

light spruce
#

I had to do a typing course with a goddamned typewriter in high school

icy minnow
#

hahaha

light spruce
#

that was a total fucking nightmare for someone used to backspace, you know, actually deleting previous characters.

icy minnow
#

we had computers at my highschool (early late 90s, 2000s), but just barely

#

I think they all ran that novell crap

#

yeah I don't envy folks who had to go through the whole typewriter thing.

#

I guess it was a marvel of it's time, but I mean, y'know, modern

light spruce
#

Yeah... typing in middle school? Computers. High school? Welcome to some goddamned IBM typewriters. Don't forget your correction tape!

icy minnow
#

it was fun as a kid to play on though, my aunt had one

#

oh that's frustrating lol

#

i remember.. what was it. The game you type and avoid bugs on the windshield. Ah maybe it's too obscure of a reference

#

mavis beacon typing or something, i'm probably off.

light spruce
#

Here is how to calculate text centering for the typeface you have on the dumb typewriter ball

icy minnow
#

oh man lol

light spruce
#

As if word processing software hadn't existed for fucking eternity by then

#

Christ. It's 0635, I'm fairly drunk, and my coal plant still isn't operational

north torrent
#

Coal is dead technology.

light spruce
#

Yeah, well, it's better than burning compressed trees and dead animal parts

north torrent
#

I bought a new old laptop.

light spruce
#

That's called a rerun

north torrent
#

It has 24gb of RAM for some odd reason.

light spruce
#

My notebook has an astounding four

north torrent
#

GTX 1060 3gb version.

#

7th generation i7 something or rather.

#

My friend realized that making games on a laptop doesn't work well, so he build a new rig and was just using this laptop as a backup.

But now his wife had a baby so he now has cash and I have a backup laptop to leave at school.

#

Well, that cash I gave him is probably gone by now... babies...

light spruce
#

About all mine needs to be able to do is contribute to depression from r/politics and display pornography. It used to occasionally see some use at the coffee shop when I didn't want to write out things by hand, but that might as well be in the distant past now

#

tldrbot - making games doesn't work well

north torrent
#

I have a lot of free time at work. Some days I don't teach my first class until the afternoon.

#

So I can get at least 10-15 hours of game design done a week while at work.

#

So it made sense to buy his second hand laptop with a GTX 1060.

#

I didn't want to invest a lot into a computer for my school office as I put all my money into my home rig for my real game design.

icy minnow
#

sorry youngest woke up, didn't mean to drop off lol

light spruce
#

Yeah, since I don't have to go out for things, Linux on a cheap Chromebook does what I "need"

north torrent
#

I will mostly be working in FL Studio or doing User Interfaces in Unreal at work. I will save the heavy environment design tasks for my real computer.

icy minnow
#

I recently looked into shadow.tech cause keeping my herd in modern computers would take thousands of dollars for components and upkeep.

I gotta say, it is absolutely great.

#

I do have 1/1 fiber with basically no latency, so that probably really helps the experience, but man. It's so affordable and easy to manage.

light spruce
#

If you're going to run the shadows, avoid the BTL chips. BTL burn is a great way to end your career.

icy minnow
#

now I just gotta find an affordable laptop with 17 inch screen

#

ahha, I am missing the reference -_-

north torrent
#

I can give you one.

#

It is kind of old though.

#

Heavy.

icy minnow
#

hehe, I'm surprised that they don't have more affordable options on the table.

light spruce
#

References that most people don't get are basically my stock and trade.

icy minnow
#

I looked at the pinebook, it's only $200 but a 15" screen, and I don't think shadow.tech has an app for arma yet

north torrent
#

I have been using a 17 right now until I get my new old laptop in the mail.

light spruce
#

Arma? As in the absolutely hateful milsim?

icy minnow
#

haha, i get the reference w00t w00t

north torrent
icy minnow
#

speaking of old references, anyone ever play The 4th Coming/The 4th Prophecy back in late 90s, early 00s?

north torrent
#

16:10

icy minnow
#

dang

light spruce
#

Is still have a definition for notepad++ (which I really don't even use now because of vscode) for their dogshit SQF format

north torrent
#

You search AOC on Google and all you get is politics, not computer monitors. Very popular brand here though.

icy minnow
#

it might not be this exact model, but I did see a review for.. I think this brand on LTT, suggesting it was a great display for a really low price

#

I think the thing that turned me off was it was a VA not an IPS, so I'm probably mixing it up

light spruce
#

You know what would be a great idea? If at the end of something like an if statement you had to put a semicolon after the goddamned braces that encapsulate the series of statements.

icy minnow
#

heh

light spruce
#

She is pretty lady.

north torrent
#

This one is an IPS.

#

But AOC makes a lot of different monitors that are widely available over here.

light spruce
#

When she doesn't have her hair pulled back so flat that it compresses her skull. And I will always hate the large 80s glasses on absolutely everyone.

icy minnow
#

I've been holding off on getting 4k monitor, cause I have two 1440 predators, but I think my next monitor will be one huge curved 4k

#

🤦‍♂️

#

I get that reference too, I think lol

north torrent
#

My main monitor is 1440 x 3440. That is perfect for me.

fluid bloom
#

@light spruce arma's sqf? It was pretty horribad 😄

#

well, is

icy minnow
#

mine is 2560x1440, so not quiet as high resolution, but I have been really happy with them

north torrent
#

On my school desk I am just doing the 15 inch laptop screen and a 22 inch 16:10 monitor. So 1080 is all I need.

icy minnow
#

high end IPS panels seem to last forever it seems.

north torrent
#

No reason to spend any more money for my school desk.

fluid bloom
#

panels last forever tbh >_>

#

it's the capacitors that blow out first

light spruce
#

Yeah, it's total garbage.

fluid bloom
#

I did few things with sqf

icy minnow
#

not sure how it is now, but I owned a PC repair business early 00s, it was always the backlite going on than

#

so yeah, I can easily believe that.

light spruce
#

Really kinda like Arma in general

north torrent
#

The nice thing about 1440 x 3440 is that you can watch 4k movies that are Cinematic Widescreen at almost full 4k.

icy minnow
#

(on laptops, LCDs weren't really as widespread as they are now, albeit, plenty were about)

fluid bloom
#

for arma 3 I made a script for a platoon size attack formation (or maybe it was a company size) and then a script for computing projectile impact points when flying jets 🤔

icy minnow
#

yeah I really want one of those curved displays.. It's my secret dream to play W3 on 4k with curved panel

#

with my face literally* shoved into it

north torrent
#

Curved for Ultrawide only in my opinion.

icy minnow
#

I see some G9 odyssey thing on LTT a while back, I drooled the whole time.

north torrent
#

My 16:10 is flatter than my Japanese girlfriend...

icy minnow
#

speaking of drooling, I hope a 3080 TI comes out, cause I need something to justify my decision to wait on the 30 series

#

ooof

fluid bloom
#

curved displays are gimmicks

icy minnow
#

F for yer girlfriend, the respect key though, not the, y'know.

fluid bloom
#

their only purpose is to hide off axis backlight bleed and/or glow

icy minnow
#

what! I think they'd be cool, but i've never used one.

light spruce
#

Hey. Ain't nothing wrong with small tits and I won't stand for any insinuation otherwise

icy minnow
#

y'know, good point. I concur.

north torrent
#

As much as I like ultrawide I actually have a hard time using super ultrawide.

21:9 is kind of the limit... When they go even wider I start to feel claustrophobic. I actually saved up money for a super ultrawide. Went to the store, tried it, and realized it wasn't for me.

icy minnow
#

joni, you don't think those uhm, curved panels are good for immersion?

#

my big concern was as a daily driver, but i keep thinking it would be good for that too

light spruce
#

I would rather put a bullet in my brain than be stuck using one display

north torrent
#

I very much like the curve on my 21:9 display.

fluid bloom
#

my immersion with a curve would be broken due to the image distortion

median wraith
#

What's going on here today?

icy minnow
#

I guess I hadn't heard about that...

north torrent
#

I am actually much happier now that I am using just one display.

Though my 21:9 is used like 2 displays 90% of the time.

icy minnow
#

That's a legit thing? bah. I need to educate.

fluid bloom
light spruce
#

If you aren't using multiple displays, you're fucking wrong.

north torrent
#

Mr. Jonimake has an irrational grudge against curves, Mr. Starshade. Best to not think too much into it.

light spruce
#

hashtag fightme

fluid bloom
#

irrational? 😄

north torrent
#

He rants about it on here from time to time.

icy minnow
#

haha, I use multiple monitors, and have since the CRT days, but I can't lie, I figured having one big display would be a cool improvement

north torrent
#

Send me your location, Mr. Justin, I am ready for a fight.

icy minnow
#

I wasn't looking forward to learning the window management in one screen versus 2, but, yknow

fluid bloom
#

wake me up when we have proper face tracking and view projection to the shape of the display, then I can get a curved monitor

north torrent
#

Wait... you don't have the corona, do you? Mr. Justin?

icy minnow
#

hey thanks for that link joni, i will dig into it.

light spruce
#

You do know I carry a firearm, right?

icy minnow
#

Thanks for ruining my dreams though

fluid bloom
icy minnow
#

👍 for that one.

north torrent
#

Ok, I will bring two firearms.

icy minnow
#

gasp that is very noticeable.

light spruce
#

it's kinda why I don't get into fights

icy minnow
#

I wonder why on all the LTT and other reviews no one talks about that

fluid bloom
#

you probably won't notice it unless you're doing technical drawings though 😉

icy minnow
#

maybe I just missed the initial memo and they don't feel the need to rehash

#

but hot damn, that's really noticeable

#

well, from years of photoshop, which i no longer abuse myself with, that kinda stuff would've been a game breaker. Clients insist on pixel perfect.

north torrent
#

The thing Mr. Jonimake intentionally leaves out is that the human eye doesn't see anything straight because it is round.

fluid bloom
#

that makes no sense

#

this is a matter of display shape vs. the projection used in 3d rendering

#

all renderers project to a flat plane

#

(usually)

north torrent
#

In practice I use both curved and flat monitors and there is no practical difference with doing precise graphic design.

light spruce
#

That's going to be dependent upon a number of variables..

icy minnow
#

jonimake, what do you use for displays?

north torrent
#

But a curved 21:9 just looks so much cooler on a desk.

fluid bloom
#

I'm still looking for a display 😄

north torrent
#

Get an AOC.

fluid bloom
#

my old dell wfp 2407 being kaboom and now I have a shitty 27" lenovo thinkvision

light spruce
#

I would have to actually use one for work for a while to see if it was a problem or not

fluid bloom
#

temporary from work

#

I would get one of those new samsung odyssey displays if they came with a flat panel

icy minnow
#

i keep telling my work to pick me up a 3090 for.. machine learning

north torrent
#

My next monitor has to be HDR 10. I just wish I could get an HDR 10 OLED.
