BMWs here are notorious for being owned by asshats lol
I've seen so many BMWs in the ditch in the winter, and rear ending people buuuuut same with minivans lol
So many people don't know how to drive
lol did you see in their new cars they will have heated seats as a yearly subscription 🤦♀️
yeah, need to find the article lol
The on-disc DLC of cars
Yeah I liked the older ones like that, good to do stuff with
It's cheaper to have a more unified production line and then software lock features that you upsell
Once they went rounded that's when it went down hill
Do Mustangs look like Mustangs?
Comparing the 8-series and the Mustang you start to realize something incredible. Let me show you what I mean.

★Get ...
I have subscriptions I'm paying like every 3 years but that's for 4G connectivity and network services for the car but not for the god damn heated seats, a piece of hardware you already paid for and then have to pay again to activate it
Old BMW cars were actually good, new ones nahhh.... that's what you get with a "premium" brand that's counting on the glory from the old days
Neither of those look like a Mustang...
How would they shut off the heated seats feature if you don't pay? or do they just send a letter saying "bring back your car or pay for heated seats"?
It's all software controlled. It's not like you're physically turning on power to heating coils.
So they are always remotely connected to your car?
yeah
Screw that lol
Hell, probably. But that's not even necessary for it to be constant.
It wouldn't be terribly difficult to make a hardware bypass... but the better solution would be to just not buy shit from them.
Lol true
wait are they really charging periodically for heated seats or is this just a hypothetical?
My car has network services but nothing hardware related is locked behind a subscription, only the connection is what I'm paying for, like a phone
I get updates from time to time for my car, it downloads the update and installs it (newer thought I would say that for a car lol)
Got a few UI updates but the last one was for improved automatic emergency braking and proximity alert
"Over the air updates" is what they are calling it, and it's "Features such as heated seats" so not just?
🤔
that was the brief thing I read about it
I mean that sort of makes sense if they can reduce the cost of manufacture and thus the initial purchase cost of vehicle
but if not then no
:D
BMW in 2025 "Subscribe to turn the wheel" lol jk
I don't think a single car here is sold without heated seats as standard
Reduce their production cost. And that's it.
the ones which don't have heated seats here are always imports :P
How many buns need frostbite before they drop this idea? lol
https://www.thedrive.com/news/34547/bmw-is-planning-to-sell-heated-seats-and-more-as-a-subscription-no-really
A possibility of paying for automatic high-beams, jesus....
I want more cooled seats.
They're just going to start losing customers if they paywall shit tbh
Fuck automatic high beams.
Where is here ponkkis?
Automatic high beams. Automatic wipers. That shit annoys me.
automatic wipers is nice tbh
Automatic high beams. Automatic wipers. That shit annoys me.
@light spruce you are the exact opposite of me lol
Aye makes sense lol, we get pretty brutal winters here in Canada too
never driven a car with auto high beams so wouldn't know :P
I don't want shit doing things on its own out of nowhere.
It's distracting.
Also, I never use my highs anyway.
Driving relaxing, bird shits on window and wipers come up "AHHHHHH" lol
at least in my car the auto wipers is just a mode on the wipers
off, auto, fast, superfast
so you just turn it on auto if it's not raining that much
it depends from 1 system to another, on some cars high beams take ages to react and on other it instantly turns them off if it sees another car
high beams are pretty much a necessity at night when driving somewhere without street lights
My dad had a Lexus that had all that auto shit. Drove it a few times. Drove me nuts.
I understand it if it's a sports car or something
but a Lexus is supposed to be comfy so it would make sense in that lol
I live in a place as described. Still don't use highs. Then again, I also always have to wear sunglasses.
I use high beams a lot since I live in a forest, I get blinded by high beams after turning mine off, the other car doesn't 😦
Recently drove my parent's car which doesn't have all that and I had to remember how to turn the lights on lol
My low beams and fog lights are auto and it's nice but that's it
the EU regulations on day time running lights are stupid
because of that you see cars with basically no lights on in the back sometimes at night because people think they have their lights on
I'm annoyed that I can't turn off the head lamps while still leaving the fog lamps on
Why would you want to have your fog lamps on if you don't have your headlights on anyway lol
That's everywhere because a company was too cheap to put in a 50 cent photosensor for automatic lights
nah it's not because of lack of sensors.. they are in there but the regulations are why they don't turn on more than just the daytime running lights
@light spruce if you don't like automatic stuff wait till you try automatic lane assist lol
I have 3 options, automatic correction, vibrate only or off, had to set it to vibrate, it's such a weird feeling when the car starts steering on it's own
or at least that's my understanding, could be wrong
The original point of fog lamps was because they're lower on the car, it doesn't immediately turn everything directly in front of you into a grey mess you can't see through.
since on older cars where you have those lights they still turn on normal low beams as well
I just don't like newer cars.
it's only really the high beams in my experience that are problematic in fog
I would never, ever use lane assist.
at least I never found low beams annoying in fog so no reason to turn those off and keep fog lights on
I will stick with my 2006 car until gasoline powered vehicles are obsolete.
I'm all for new cars and new tech, some people prefer that and some prefer older cars which you can customize
yeah lane assist is a peculiar concept tbh
Highs in fog you definitely can't see jack shit
it's like.. it's okay to be distracted just a little
:P
radar cruise control is great but lane assist uhh yeah no thanks :D
I know how to drive, so the less computer fuckery going on the better
it's like meant to keep you in lane in case you fall asleep for example, I had to set it to only vibrate, such a weird feeling when it's starts steering on it's own
Great invention on modern cars is emergency braking, especially if it's one of the better implementations, I can see how it can prevent a lot of accidents
yeah emergency braking is good
my mom had a small collision because she was turning and the car in front suddenly slammed on brakes for no reason and she was looking to see if anyone was coming from the side
emergency braking system would have prevented that
yeah 100%
That one is actually a useful feature if the implementation isn't shit.
However, ABS can go die in a fire
The thing is with my car you can turn of all the assists if you don't want them, it's up to you
I think all manufactures should be doing it like that so you can choose, there are a lot of them which force you to use it
knowing how to use your brakes is even better
yeah except it's kinda difficult to threshold brake when the grip level changes constantly
especially if you're simultaneously trying to avoid hitting a deer or something lol
do you left-foot brake?
not unless I'm playing rally sims :P
Then you should already know why you should take up left-foot braking
eh, benefits of it are kind of dubious on the street
You wouldn't even get the reaction time benefit because you wouldn't be driving with your foot on the pedal the whole time unlike when racing
with manual transmission is more difficult because you also need to be ready to jump on the clutch
it's faster for me even without having my foot on the pedal. If the throttle and brake were on a more even plane it might not be as big of a difference. But coming up to a crest or a blind corner, I've got my left foot on the pedal already.
well I guess if you're 100% focused it might help
accidents often don't happen when you're 100% focused though :D
in slippy conditions, the big thing is just that you aren't having to lift totally off the throttle to apply the brake
I'm not quite sure how being able to keep some throttle on would help me avoid a moose that decides to jump in front of my car on a pitch black section of the road :D
It's not going to help you on the moose
yeah so I'm not quite sure what you're suggesting with it then
you were talking about ice earlier
well yeah
it's more about keeping sudden weight transfer from contributing to throwing the car in a ditch for that kind of road condition
I suppose
If you trust yourself to be 100% alert in all conditions then that's great
I'm a decent driver and fast enough in a sim... but I wouldn't trust myself to do that lol
thankfully I haven't had to test it out in a real life situation but ABS and TCS are something I wouldn't really want to drive without because when you're distracted and shit hits the fan... yeah I don't know if I'd be able to quickly react in the right way :P
I don't like them because they add another variable.
Traction control has tried to put me into a rock wall before
That sounds pretty bizarre :P
never had any issues with TCS... I guess if you're not expecting the car to have it then it could be unpredictable
ie. if it starts correcting oversteer and you're correcting oversteer.. you'd end up on the wrong lane probably
but I know what it does when it kicks in so it seems to work just fine and it actually helps correct slides that I couldn't really correct with just inputs because it can individually apply brakes at each corner
Driving down a dirt road with a bit of slip... no problem until it freaked out and tried to slow the front left wheel down which caused the car to then rotate quite unexpectedly.
the problem is hysteresis
It doesn't know anything. It doesn't know intent. It doesn't know what's coming. It only knows that the current values have shifted from the previous values into a threshold that triggers something.
Like when the ABS flips out when I'm slowing down at the end of my driveway where there's some amount of dirt and loose gravel. And it's a situation where even if I completely locked the wheels and could actually slide across that surface it would stillstop in a shorter distance than with the ABS
you sound like you drive like a maniac lol
those systems are definitely gonna spaz out if you're pushing the car to the limit on purpose
I definitely know how to do that. But the driveway thing? That's literally just me driving totally normal and reasonable before coming to a stop to turn onto the street. And at least twice a month, with maybe 20% brake pressure, it'll hit the ABS and I just have a dead pedal until it decides that I'm allowed to tell it when to stop.
Yeah. It's frustratingly stupid.
I can understand why you'd be so negative about those systems if you've driven cars where they were all fucky like this lol
I had a lot of experience driving without any of that shit. So it's really just something that kicks in when I don't expect it to and is something I have to react to instead of whatever is actually going on
I think it's only iced over once since I've had this car. And I had to put in the fucking Konami code to turn everything off so that I could get it back up the driveway.
lol
sounds like that car has really bad systems for that
I drive all winter here and we get tons of snow and ice and no problems whatsoever with any of it :P
traction control in particular is helpful when you have too much torque at the rear wheels even with careful throttle application lol
it's pretty dogshit on front drive though
you're not exactly super likely to have some crazy oversteer happening there
if I go out just to drive through the backroads and shit, I pull the fuse for the entire ABS/TCS/torque limit systems
modern systems (with decent implementation) if it notices that a wheel is starting to slide it's gonna try to correct it but it also reads the steering input so it tries to correct you in a way that both will prevent you from sliding and keep you going where the steering wheel is pointing, now this depends how good the manufacturer implemented this
Yeah, it's really about what settings get used. And without any kind of adjustment for how much of a moron I am, it's incredibly conservative.
Rise Cyber Race, The Arc of The Void Summons you..
I'm not sure I want to be summoned
drunk tractor driving while trying to remember where I was going to build a factory

Everything is just fine.
hey, at least a hurricane didn't destroy Houston
man, what the fuck is it with vehicle collision in games where some outside corner that extends past the model causes it to bump something and turn directly into it? Is everyone just still using bounding boxes for shit?
Everything is just fine.
@plucky pagoda "When Australia burned I didn't speak up becuase I wasn't an aussie..."
lot of days I wish I had died in a fire
Either I'm misunderstanding the intent of that statement or it deserves a vulgar response.
which one?
The one that @'d me
I can't speak to the intent, or tell you how you should feel about it, but, personally, I'd just take it as gallows humor with shit being all sorts of fucked up and things burning to the ground.
(of course, I'm also a terrible, broken person)
And why the fuck is giphy's search the most garbageshit dumpster fire of uselessness?
Basically, it doesn't even need a search because it's effectively going to just give you some random bullshit anyway
It's a bit of an edgy nod to a couple of things. Definitely meant to have humor but hey if you thought it should have a vulgar response then I'll just keep it to myself in future Mike
the giphy and tenor searchs suck HARD, if you put multiple words they seem to make zero effort finding a gif that matches both words
I'm buying a new NVMe drive.
which one ?
oo nice!
give me money if you have lots !
I don't have lots anymore, I just spent it all.
pfffff did you buy me anything
Well, I have a lot in the US, but that's in case my mom needs it, because everyone is losing their jobs and getting sick from the Corona.
RTX 3090.
ahh thats good of ya
I also just paid 3 months of rent.
😮
So no rent for the next two months.
amen to that
I hide behind a bookshelf at work, so I got a silent keyboard and mouse so people wont hear me hiding.
Nobody in the US is safe...
well, as safe as can be i guess, mask, etc
oh thats neat
Māo
Switched to TKL keyboard lately and I miss numpad enter. That's the only key I was using from it.
Well, this isn't for my main rig, this is for my school desk.
My main rig has a full size keyboard. My desk at school has limited space because I am running the laptop and have a monitor and have a bunch of elementary school papers and scissors and glue stick and colored paper.
The laptop has a number pad, but I can't type as fast on a laptop keyboard or space it away from the screen like I would want.
Maybe this one https://www.tapwithus.com/
Nah, I just want the feel of an oldschool keyboard.
Go to a school and steal one
Just the act of typing on a good tactile keyboard brings me happiness. Some people like to drink and go to parties or dance or go to music concerts or Disneyland or whatever else... I find my happiness from nice typing.
I work at a school...
They have cheap keyboards.
I love cheap keyboards.
I use 25$ Dell ones, but on my main computer I use a 11$ one (which is my favorite).
Until recently I've used crappy keyboards. Bought a mechanical one (Gamermax Strike) for £35 and it's amazing.
Why does that not surprise me?
Mechanical keyboards are overrated.
No, mechanical keyboards are generally over priced
Not everyone enjoys the finer things in life.
Like banjos, stew, and mechanical keyboards.
Yeah, over priced. But unless you buy the Blue switches... the other ones are actually almost no different from membrane.
Obviously I am in the minority when you look at how well 13 inch laptops and tablets sell.
Those things make me sad honestly.
Dude, 13 inch laptops and iPad minis are pretty awesome.
Comparing my old Logitech keyboard with this one.. this one has greater tactile responses which means faster typing
Those big iPads are too big.
Knowing that authors will write stories on tablets and phones or that game designers will sit in a bed with a laptop... It makes me substantially sad honestly.
🤷 What's so great about desktops? Besides computing power, they're pretty unfortunate.
Phones are stupid, though. That's true.
Sitting at a real desk with a keyboard spaced away from a monitor in the proper position is one of the greatest joys in my life.
You don't get back pain? I've tried chairs, posturing, etc, my back just gets fatigued.
Laptops cause me neck pain from the wrong position of the screen in comparison to the keyboard.
I never get back pain. If I sit for 10-12 hours my butt will start to hurt a bit, but that's to be expected.
I guess I could get a better cushion for my chair or something.
I don't have one... but try a Purple seat cushion (or pillow for sleeping).
I just bought a Purple pillow, it's a little overpriced, but it's quite interesting.
My pillow is certainly made out of a purple rubber material. But all the branding on the box is in Chinese and I can't read it.
I bought it off of TaoBao.
It looks like what Google just showed me when I searched Purple Pillow.
https://purple.com/pillows/harmony?
It's quite a unique feeling.
Mine is triangles.
Shiiit...
Okay, I guess you don't need a Purple pillow. But I will say that that Purple pillow version is probably significantly different in feeling from the Harmony.
lol $159 for a pillow. I'm glad I don't use pillows at all.
A lot of pillows are 80 - 100, anyway.
Mine was about 600rmb.
That's pretty expensive.
There is nothing better than flat and not to soft bed.
That pillow is too flat. Needs curve.
Well... the one at the bottom picture has.
Purple does make their special beds... I want one, but it's like... ~$2.5k.
And the stock kind of fucked me. Lol.
Couple of years ago bought myself a new mattress. £1600. Soooooo comfy.
I'm just Googling similar pillows, not taking pictures of my exact pillow.
Mine is with some gel... It weights like kilo and something. Love it.
Don't believe that.
Gel tech, helps diffuse the heat from you.
Yeah, can't say it really works, but thats what they say.
my mattress has the same. I'd say is works, but there is only so much gel can do.
is it only me or reality starts breaking when the guy in the gif stands up?
Maybe its stuck in his cheeks.
Gif compression.
I'll stick to my idea that reality starts breaking when it sees an unbroken egg that should be broken and it causes a logic error
std::logic_error
in the video he's very careful when he sits, we don't even see him really sit completely
with some careful aiming, I think it can be done 😮
I'm just saying, sitting on an egg on the cushion is a bad demonstration of the cushion's softness.
You could probably do that on concrete.
https://youtu.be/qL52LUdlYJU?t=193 I know it isn't ue4 related. But it's still a game dev related question i have.
In the above video the guy has walked to z: -41000 which is really far from spawn. An this causes his movement to become really choppy and for mob animations to bug out. Can anyone explain how this could happen please? I don't see how they characters position in the world affects gameplay

Floats lose precision.
ahhh, so that's why he has jittery movement?
Is that minecraft?
Uhh, actually in that specific example, I don't know. I think it's a networking/server problem.
Aah... well, flt point precision sounds oke, but who knows.. tons of possibilities.
There is non beta Minecraft version?
would this same issue in occur in ue4? or is it just a minecraft related thing. an minecraft came out of beta yearssssss ago 😄
Yeah, it can. But they solve with moving the Origin.
by "they solve" do you mean the engine does this itself?
there is support for origin shifting in the engine but it won't happen all by itself
@cursive crypt its not "solved" really, at least not in MP plenty of things still break apparently ?
Yeah, you need work on your side too. I personally haven't played with this. Sometimes even a room is enough work.
Game design was never meant to be easy.
interesting, i'll have to try an find some resources on that. thanks 👍
Anyone know how to make a post in the looking for work section?
ask the bot as is described in the channel topic
Oh thanks bro
pre-order
for that amount of money i would hope the headphones can time travel to listen to past conversations
that is not expensive
tell us how it is when you got it. what I heard so far is that the valve one is the best one on the market.
@thin storm only the controllers are better with the index
g2 has 5 times better image
and is lighter
Yesterday I had a lot of retweets and reddit posts and such for playing Doom on a pregnancy test.
But as I explained then, it wasn't really PLAYING on a pregnancy test, it was just a video being played back, not an interactive game.
Well, now it is. It's Pregnancy Test Doom!...

lol
hahaha thats awsome
too bad it's fake
whats the difference between PCIe and M.2 ?
PCIe is a PCIe connection, usually through the PCH (chipset) on the motherboard. An M. 2 card plugged into a PCIe adapter, is still PCIe connected, so virtually no difference.
yup
thats acceptable
I don't see any difference 0.0 only slight lighting variations. What do you see?
Colors are different as well as lighting
They need to promote more gold cables so the signal travels clean.
It's not clear from that if the PCIe is gen 3 or 4, or what speeds the respective devices are.
well the difference is 1 second
But that means nothing without knowing the specs. It's like comparing how fast cars are but one is a supercar the other a Lada.
SSD M.2 - Samsung 970 EVO 500GB
SSD SATA3 - Samsung 860 Evo-Series 500GB
SSD PCIe - Intel Optane SSD 900P 480GB
optane is wank
well is the faster
Yup, I really don't see the point in Optane.
do you really need a SSD on PCe for gamedev ?
it was a gimmick really
i use a m.2 ssd to speed up shader compiles, i dont NEED an ssd exclusively to do my game dev though
I have 256 SSD pce-i but I use 2tb HDDsata3 for most storage
I use the HDD for storage
Is new but I smell they sold me a crap HDD
the old one I had were better with worst stats
I've got a Sabrent 1TB rocket Q, fairly decent 3200/2000 r/w. Probably get another one soon ish. £110.00 is decent price, I think.
But if speed is your thing, 8TB Gigabyte AORUS AIC SSD, NVMe PCIe 4.0 is currently king, with speeds around 15GiB/s
If you aren't using an SSD then you aren't living.
Fight me.
use 5.25 floppies. Hard Core.
Reminds me of other things.
@median wraith that thing is bottlenecking
on cpu and others
from my own engine, loading from nvme is much faster than SATA SSD, and sata ssd is still much faster than normal hard disk
because in my engine the load code is essentially copypasta binaries from a file into the gpu
How the new nvidias change that?
With the new direct method to load into gpu without CPU
@fringe sundial you have your own engine? 😮
@median wraith its an absollutely massive improvement
if i could do that, my loading code would run at pure disk bandwidth and would be stupid hyper fast
@ancient ingot its a toy i use for playing around with Vulkan
@median wraith to upload a texture in vulkan:
ahh vulkan, is that ever going to get super good for desktops in unreal?
grab the texture from the binary file, copy it into a CPU-side vulkan buffer (probably ringbuffer or similar, to keep beetween uploads)
create a GPU side buffer for the texture
create a vulkan copy buffer command to copy from CPU to GPU
execute the copy
wait some time till stuff executes
finalize the texture
with the ssd-to-gpu workflow:
find where in the binary file is the texture data
create gpu side buffer for the texture
create a command that copies the texture from disk to gpu
execute it
wait till execution finishes
finalize texture
there is no need for that whole CPU side upload buffer bullshit, and loading many files at once becomes much easier
as to load many files at once, you would do something like save all texture requests of a frame, and at the start of the frame, you build a upload command buffer that uploads ALL textures. Its miles more efficient
in my engine, to upload textures, i have several CPU upload buffers that i rotate, and i have a thread dedicated to the uploads. THe thread grabs N requests (as many requests as it fits into one of the 100 megabytes upload buffers), and then i load all those textures from disk, copy to that buffer, and execute the command. Next frame i do the same, but with the second upload buffer. The upload buffers rotate up to 3. The main issue is the 300 megabytes of RAM im spending on upload buffers, plus having a cpu thread pegged to do uploads. On the ssd to gpu thing, i wouldnt need either upload buffers or cpu thread
How does it not use a cpu thread to handle the disk IO?
thats the whole point and why its fun tech @light spruce
Yeah, been wondering.
because it doesnt need to. You just encode "copypasta" commands that the SSD and gpu use
so you create a gpu side buffer, and then encode a "copy X bytes from A to B" command
Maybe they offload to the hw controllers,?
yup
its basically a copypaste command
from ssd memory to gpu memory
thats how SSDs work for cpu too
Hmm... Yeah, this in general may open gates to code the hw directly.
but the copypasta details are done by the OS
so when you read files on a SSD, the OS launches copypasta commands to the SSD controller/driver
and copies it into RAM
and then it gives you that data for your application
tho ssd to gpu needs a different controller/motherboard so that the SSD has connection to the gpu
I suppose its all standardized protocol down there. But you need some kind of interface to it. Easier than doing the OS stuff is doing.
yes, thats also the fun part of it, its super simple
you just do copypasta
hey i want to copy N bytes from this adress in the SSD to this adress on gpu/ram
and the copypasta itself happens async, done by the SSD controllers
Oh. That's why I was confused. I thought you were talking about actually doing this on regular hardware now... and I couldn't figure out how it would work because of the physical layout
you cant do it on current layouts
What hw you need for that you say?
thats why its a big deal for consoles
well, a motherboard that has connection from SSD slot to gpu
and a modern gpu
Yeah, now I get what you were talking about
and a modern SSD
Oh, so its very new tech.
yup, its not supported yet on the pcs
its a console thing
but the idea of this system, is that you will be able to run the disk at full throttle without pegging a cpu thread
so if you have 1 gigabyte of textures
and your ssd is 4 gigabytes a second
it will take 0.25 seconds to upload all
Well, good years to come then. Waiting for some framework to handle these. SSD <-> GPU, Audio <-> SSD, SSD <-> Network... ye
because you just build a command with a thousand texture load copypasta requests (and reserve 1 gb of gpu memory), and let the SSD stream everything
Yeah, sounds good ofc.
in the consoles, the ssd controller also has systems to prioritize requests
so you can send those 1000 texture requests at low prio
and then still load your meshes at high prio for example
while the texture requests keep going on the background over time
- it can do (Simple) decompression on said copypasta command
so you can have your textures stored in .zip format, and it will also decompress while copypasting
https://twitter.com/engineeringvids/status/1304368037211103232
Those are not tanks. Those are Artillery units. 🙂
honestly, if you have load screens
at all
in the new consoles
your engineering team is trash and should be fired
with how stupid fast the system is, a decently made engine should be able to upload all assets instantly
in my crappy engine i would be able to load stuff like my test scenes (1000 textures, hundreds of meshes, 3 gb of data) in 0.5 seconds
I understand, but I know that hw and sw are on loop for eternity. In this case artist gonna stuff a lot in that pipe.
"if you have load screens your engineering team is trash and should be fired" xDD
If you have empty room you fill it in.
sigh "That's what she said."
@cursive crypt you can fill the entire VRAM of the console in 2 seconds
if your load screens take more than 3, your systems are trash
and at sub 3 seconds, you can hide the loadscreen behind a fade-to-black or animation
meanwhile I have like five textures and I still get texture popin on level load in UE4 :X
But without loading screens, where will they put those useless tips???????????????
So much art will be wasted without them.
i expect the next generation to be full of open world games, or at least seamless experiences god of war style
in god of war they stopped you SO MUCH on slow doors and similar to slow down traversal so that the engine can load things
but on next gen that is unnecesary
they also have hardware-assisted texture streaming, so that engines can implement texture streaming in a faster and more accurate way
can you like, uncompress data on the fly?
to store textures in zlib compression on the SSD for example
Yeah, there's no way that Kratos has nipples anymore
on that topic, how did you try that tech btw? 😛
https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/directstorage-is-coming-to-pc/
ok seems it handles decompression anyway, not sure which algorithms are used but some form of compression is done
@ancient hornet consoles do implement compression during that copypasta operation
zlib
tho there are also other fancier algos
ps5 has Kraken spec, and xbox i think is Crunch or something
havent tried either
so DirectStorage is an API you can use everywhere, but if you want to skip the CPU you need a GPU that implements the decompression itself I guess? like the RTX 30 series
nice nigeys nice lmao
lool
Infinity Fabric
That was a pretty interesting bit of education vblanco. Thanks for all the insight!
That's what a lot of people who are downplaying the significance of it are missing about what's coming. Wait until it starts getting adopted in the secondary PC hardware markets and developers have had a year or two to really play around with it. There's going to be a lot of new ideas and possibilities that come out of it.
It's both an exciting and terrifying time to be an indie dev.
but with UE5 u have 500mb zbrush sculpts to load 😛
It's just more evidence that content creation tools haven't kept up.
That gap is just going to get wider.
yea gforce is at 3090 and blender only at 2.9
If you're using adobe creative suite there's a free comp month showing in the GeForce experience app. I just used it and it comped my next monthly fee.
somehow i doubt all load times wil be eliminated

@plucky pagoda Finally! A reason to load up the app!
I never install it. Though that doesn't stop them from tripling the download size to include it.
i have an amd card now, sort of the same bloat, just doesnt need a login
I dont remember ever logging in, but I just updated and it wants one:/
i cant wait to just drop a gazillion pieces of foliage in UE5 😛
might have to get zbrush than cuz blender doesnt handle a billion of verts verry well
The Epic Games client is taking an obscenely long time to download games lately. Downloading to the same disk using steam is working as expected. Does anyone have any idea why this might be?
amazon is havin an off day?
@carmine frigate Are you responding to me?
yea
The thing is, I've experienced this before, recently
Shouldn't they have addressed this by now?
i dont know
Is that Games client, the Launcher?
I keep forgetting there are also games from them.
I forget what it's called. It's their store application
ow that thing is trash
Yeah, it's far from great.
omg no... I was just ranting in my mind before an hour
but its all they got atm, so it has to do
You reminded me... In fact I want to check can this be easily circumvented. Write my own client.
@carmine frigate sadly the UE 5 triangle/polygon crunching algorithm only works with static geometry, not with foliage that is (usually) vertex animated
same goes for DXR 😄
well u can prolly get away with static grass, vertex animated grass often just looks like shit
grass doesnt move that much irl
but there are a lot of strands
@real palm It might have come off in a way you did not intend. Humor does not always translate well. It's already forgotten and no offense taken. I am however, uncomfortable with comparing most anything to the failure of most of the world to take action to stop the systematic murder of 6 million people.
Eh... it's not that egregious IMO, but I see your point.
Failure to take action in terms of the climate is going to have a pretty high casualty count, and while you may be of the opinion that it isn't so direct and overt, it is equally as deliberate on the part of those responsible and the apathy of most people is quite high.
Poor taste? Sure.
Clearly I won't be doing standup anytime soon
does anyone know a name for a Single player survival game with realistiq graphics kinda something like the forest but different still and in all biomes

thanks

Apple has changed its App Store guidelines to somewhat permit xCloud and Stadia. There's a big catch that means games will have to be individually submitted to the App Store for review. I have asked Microsoft to comment on the changes and what they mean for xCloud on iOS

can anyone think of a synonym for Owner that describes a player(s) in a multiplayer RPG owning something, like a building, loot chest, etc?
obviously i can't use 'Owner' as it means something else in a UE4 context
"Owning Player"?
i thought about that but its a bit ambiguous - it can mean the owning network client
ill keep googling
maybe Holder, but thats imprecise
im really focusing on the important things here 😁
just use OwnedBy and then you have a variable name and a text string. Problem solved.
Does the item know about the owner, or does the owner know about the item
?
Depending, you could use "BelongsTo"
since OwnedBy conflates with Owner
Proprietor.
Isn't the UE builtin Owner value already used for networking purposes as well?
I'm going to need you to turn down the volume on that hipster talk.
not sure why it needs duplication

Why would Apple do that
apple don't want competition
since they lose the battle with music streaming with spotify
Interesting
and that why there in the antitrust lawsuit
because they don't want competition at all only be monopoly
I guess that makes sense but I think they’re being a little greedy, aren’t they already huge
yes
Not sure if this this the best channel for this
but there are some programming books free today, including C++ https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/international-day-of-the-programmer-free-bundle?ref=gamefromscratch

I think I'm going to pass on the PS5 for now. PSNow has been disappointing, the games with plus have mostly been stuff I either don't want to play or already got free elsewhere. While Gamepass has consistently had day one releases I would have bought otherwise and over half the time has the game I'm looking for when I'm thinking about buying it. Trying to get 4 people to be able to play everything I could buy 3 or 4 of the Series S consoles and pay for 2 Ultimate subscriptions and have all 4 consoles covered. It's not worth keeping two console ecosystems when you have a family that wants to play together.
I'd be tempted to go all PC if the kids didn't use the consoles to keep up with their friends so much.
But with being able to join xbox parties on pc now that could change
Easy solution: "You're a carpenter now. You? You're an electrician. Make your own fun."
I just don't like being charged to play online
I don't like it when my cheese gets moldy.

yes but some mold is eatable. its does not taste well alone, but on a slice of bread with butter. mmmmhhhh
its no problem its not toxic
Camembert has mold around it as well
I wonder how they figured out that you can eat it.
Yeast is also a type of mold :P
There's a love emergency.
yeah moldy bread is pretty toxic. you wont die but your liver can be damaged on the other hand its the only organ that you can cut in half and it regrows.
in asia they eat insects and spiders. uhhh I couldnt eat that stuff.

They sell licenses. Brand sells.
Hello
They have actually done some further audio work
But I think that Atmos is probably the end of the line. Since it's effectively just having audio produced from a 3D location that then gets mapped to a particular speaker setup. So, basically the same thing that video games have done for ages on a 2D plane
Well, they deal more into the hardware realm I think. So there are other problems to solve than the pure algorithm. Not going to defend ofc. For me it is just they know people and have fame.

I don't know the total context because of the number of people I have on the block list, usually because if I wanted to read shit on twitter, I'd be on twitter.
That said, I'd like to have more games that supported Atmos and then actually have an Atmos receiver so I could figure out stupid ways to attach speakers to the ceiling.
🤔 I'm going for poor's man pizza: slice of bread and tomato with mozzarella between them.
Sounds like a poor man's margherita pizza. At least toast the bread with a bit of olive oil.
Though if you have ghetto spaghetti I will definitely Liam Neeson you.
Aah, good idea, the toast. Thanks.
It's the little things that matter. Like how plain ramen is sad, but if you throw an egg in it... you're having actual food.
I like cooking rice noodles, kinda same category. With fermented soya, fish sauce, green leafs and soft boiled egg. A bit spicy ofc. Bamboo shots too... mm... nice 🍴
I'm largely too lazy to actually cook anymore
I would be too, if I was able to order food. So, I'm lazy on average, cooking sometimes, otherwise - sandwiches and cans.
I was actually planning to go back to cooking more... but then 2020 2020ed all over everything
Seems wrong somehow.
A point of interest: in the realm of physical tools, the more things something is supposed to do, the shittier it is at all of those things.
If I ever need to use the blade on my multitool, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong.
Its fine, I peel sometimes apples with it. Basically cut food when I'm outdoors.
I'm also usually with a friend who has at least 3+ knives with him. Sometimes including axes, machetes and etc. So there is that.
my multitool lives in a bag on my pack. I've got my EDC knife and a utility knife that are actually on me
why would anyone carry three plus knives
Because they're tools and it depends on what you need to do
lol
is he a lumberjack?
talking to @cursive crypt
in the army I got by with one knife but axes were part of the squad equipment so I didn't need to chop wood with the knife
that's because batonning fucking sucks compared to using at least a hatchet for chopping up wood
well uh, yeah?
technically, if I have my pack on me, I have three knives
Well, he has one for food. Then one to cut vegetation around and usually a 3rd which is kinda back up, then you add any other he is currently trying out from the store. And that's the knives only. Then there are guns, bows, and stuff. Most self-made. My buddy has interests.
Some people do the whole outdoors thing.
Btw, last time we agreed that machete is quite good for plants. Axe for firewood and stuff.
All I ever got from outdoors is chronic rhinitis and Lyme disease
I mostly enjoy my neurological damage and chronic pain in the comfort of climate control.

I just got my new keyboard in the mail.
Where are you sending it?
why the fuck did I just look over here and see like 85 gifs?
Ducks did it.
I don't know
why did you?
(is this a joke?)
it feels like a joke
maybe I should have said "who's there"
Impressive, this keyboard comes in a brown box with no fancy pictures or logos or colors on it.
Minimalism.
This keyboard has no F keys of number pad.
My number pad also has no F keys
60% or 65%?
No Idea, I failed math.
My family was so poor when I was a kid my scientific calculator only had one fn key on it
I WAS AN ADVENTURER LIKE YOU
UNTIL I TOOK AN ARROW TO THE KEY
65% then
Is it in the normal place?
It had 68
OR DID THEY SHIFT IT
Small shift sounds like some ISO layout garbage
Mine is almost the same layout
You know, techically, all keyboards are mechanical
This uses rubber domes.
get out
I hide behind a bookshelf at work and I got tired of my clicky keys and mouse telling people where I was hiding.
Linear switches aren't clicky
This feels like Cherry Red switches just with a more muted sound.
seems like a messy way to type
I have browns on my main rig. I just have the new keyboard for my hidden desk at work.
This thing is pretty damn smooth to type on.
And I am very picky about my keyboards.
I'm very picky about my guitars
I only play one guitar now.
Wonder if they make any good ergonomic mechanical keyboards? I switched to a microsoft.. sculpt? I think it was for longevity reasons, but admittedly didn't look specifically for mechanical keyboard ergonomic replacements.
I am loyal.
I have blues for my main typing keys. Clears on modifiers, arrows, PTT
miss mechanical keyboards a bit, for no reason? Maybe nostalgia.
I'm very happy with my 22$ keyboard from jb hifi
There are quite a few different split layout mechanical boards
My main keyboard cost me about 80rmb but it is great for typing. This new one cost 10x that...
Yeah, I suppose I should look around.. and stop being a scrub 😄
You know, now that your old keyboard has alerted everyone to the fact that you're behind the bookcase, getting a new one won't exactly unalert them now they know
A lot of the custom/semi-custom split setups are actually separate pieces
I've seen those. I think I'd probably get annoyed? I have no experience to back that up though
I'm always looking for something ergonomic to try to see if it's better, and those odd layouts have showed up a few times
er, not layout, but configurations? whatever.
So you can arrange them how you want... and they'll have some kind of cable that connects the two sections. I've seen them use TRS, SATA, and USB C
I've been trying to promote my kids to switch to ergonomic mice/keyboards, stubborn. hah
It's blasphemy when I recommend they game with a gamepad lol
I just have to get used to this shorter shift key. It is the only thing about this keyboard that is slowing me down right now.
maybe lower your seat
Those shorter shift keys / backspace keys are infuriating, I feel your pain
It's been a long time since I've used an "ergonomic" keyboard.
My work laptop that my job gave me has the shift key moves to the left of the up arrow... Worst layout ever. I can't type with it.
Just use cortana then
It is a model sold exclusively in Chine, so I guess nobody told them how dumb the keyboard layout was.
she has speech recognition
I seem to just be buying some variant of the microsoft sculpt keyboard. I got annoyed with their wireless variant recently .. very intermittent occasional blip in connectivity. If I wasn't in an IDE always I probably wouldn't even notice it, so I just picked up a wired one around christmas, but .. meh, I wanna try something new.
just use cortana, lmao
RSI is one thing... but CTS is going to be more dependent on your overall wrist position. As well as your particular genetics and other random-ass variables
Don't laugh at his jokes, you'll just encourage him
yeah, I try really hard to keep my hands neutral, rather mouse or keyboard
and wrist y'know, not at any odd angles, etc
I wouldn't bother using one at this point personally.
PSA: focus on healthy practices is more important than hardware, but some hardware really makes that challenging
the mouse or the keyboard?
I've had to switch everything, so I use a touchpad (magicpad2, all the other ones seem subpar) and aforementioned keyboard. I'm relatively young and was having problems, but I've been into computers since a wee lad 😛
I bought a silent mouse. You can't hear it click.
I would wind up having to double up on some of the edge keys to use a split layout.
too much IRC & old MMOs as a kid
the split on my keyboard isn't super dramatic, so I haven't really had to change much
I noticed it a lot more at first, because the keyboard has this weird thing to help with your wrist position, it's like a inverse tilt (tilt is under your palm, on front of keyboard, rather than the back of keyboard)
but after getting use to it, only thing i miss is my clickity clacks.
I reach further across when gaming.
oooh, i don't game much. so fair there
Y is my map key
and when I do it's with a gamepad, cause it gives my hands a break from coding lol
oho, makes total sense.
Well, I am at 66wpm with this new keyboard but still missing the shift key from time to time.
WSAD can die in a fire
thats how it goes ioFlow 🙂 have a good one bud!
The only reason I could see you having issues with the smaller shift key is because you're used to reaching further across because of of ISO layouts
70wmp on my regular keyboard.
because the left edge is in the same place for an ANSI layout
I keep my hands at an odd angle.
Because I also have a 1.75U right shift
1.75U?
So my right hand seems to lose its anchor without the normal shift key. I'll probably get used to it in a few days.
sorry i'm nosy and always curious, what's that?
Maybe it will force me to correct some of my bad habits.
Or maybe that's 1.5. I don't know if the measurement is from the top or the base of the keycap
Units. As in a multiplier based on the standard key size
and speaking of right shift. Has anyone here managed to actually use right shift for left shift habits? I'd love to get my left pinky a break, but man. I can't break the habit of shifting with left hand lol
ahh! OK
But this keyboard will be very quiet and it will be small for fit on my work desk with my laptop, monitor, and all the elementary school supplies I keep on my desk.
I kinda sorta thought units, but wasn't sure. Thanks for clarification.
I shift way more with the right hand.
It's typically most relevant for space bars
My mind is blown @ that Mao.
You use shift on the spacebar?
Naw, he's talking about unit measurement of the keys
the u size
I'm yapping all over y'alls convo, pardon.
My left hand types a lot of the letters that proper typing position would give to the right.
I type N with my left hand for example.
gasp
T, H, and N
t makes sense...
Sometimes Y as well.
Actually, almost always why not that I am watching myself.
I've had my right space bar set to shift for a couple of days. Pretty sure that I won't wind up adopting that as a fulltime thing.
I only use the left shift key to do U J M and over.
that probably took a minute to get acclimated too, hehe
i find breaking computer habits to be challenging. I remember being in despair switching to touchpad
Thankfully, with microsoft's precision touchpad drivers, you can program it now. So now for all but very specific things, it's faster for me
lol I look like I type properly, but you can tell it's not like they teach if you look close enough
There wasn't much literature in the early 90s on proper typing, that I had access too, anyway
just wing commander and bleeding edge hardware for running quick-dos baby
I only use a trackpad on my notebook now. Used to use one on a Mac that I had largely to run comms apps on
yeah, it's definitely something you have to /do/ intentionally. I remember it was a very rough switch for me
I had to do a typing course with a goddamned typewriter in high school
hahaha
that was a total fucking nightmare for someone used to backspace, you know, actually deleting previous characters.
we had computers at my highschool (early late 90s, 2000s), but just barely
I think they all ran that novell crap
yeah I don't envy folks who had to go through the whole typewriter thing.
I guess it was a marvel of it's time, but I mean, y'know, modern
Yeah... typing in middle school? Computers. High school? Welcome to some goddamned IBM typewriters. Don't forget your correction tape!
it was fun as a kid to play on though, my aunt had one
oh that's frustrating lol
i remember.. what was it. The game you type and avoid bugs on the windshield. Ah maybe it's too obscure of a reference
mavis beacon typing or something, i'm probably off.
Here is how to calculate text centering for the typeface you have on the dumb typewriter ball
oh man lol
As if word processing software hadn't existed for fucking eternity by then
Christ. It's 0635, I'm fairly drunk, and my coal plant still isn't operational
Coal is dead technology.
Yeah, well, it's better than burning compressed trees and dead animal parts
I bought a new old laptop.
That's called a rerun
It has 24gb of RAM for some odd reason.
My notebook has an astounding four
GTX 1060 3gb version.
7th generation i7 something or rather.
My friend realized that making games on a laptop doesn't work well, so he build a new rig and was just using this laptop as a backup.
But now his wife had a baby so he now has cash and I have a backup laptop to leave at school.
Well, that cash I gave him is probably gone by now... babies...
About all mine needs to be able to do is contribute to depression from r/politics and display pornography. It used to occasionally see some use at the coffee shop when I didn't want to write out things by hand, but that might as well be in the distant past now
tldrbot - making games doesn't work well
I have a lot of free time at work. Some days I don't teach my first class until the afternoon.
So I can get at least 10-15 hours of game design done a week while at work.
So it made sense to buy his second hand laptop with a GTX 1060.
I didn't want to invest a lot into a computer for my school office as I put all my money into my home rig for my real game design.
sorry youngest woke up, didn't mean to drop off lol
Yeah, since I don't have to go out for things, Linux on a cheap Chromebook does what I "need"
I will mostly be working in FL Studio or doing User Interfaces in Unreal at work. I will save the heavy environment design tasks for my real computer.
I recently looked into shadow.tech cause keeping my herd in modern computers would take thousands of dollars for components and upkeep.
I gotta say, it is absolutely great.
I do have 1/1 fiber with basically no latency, so that probably really helps the experience, but man. It's so affordable and easy to manage.
If you're going to run the shadows, avoid the BTL chips. BTL burn is a great way to end your career.
now I just gotta find an affordable laptop with 17 inch screen
ahha, I am missing the reference -_-
hehe, I'm surprised that they don't have more affordable options on the table.
References that most people don't get are basically my stock and trade.
I looked at the pinebook, it's only $200 but a 15" screen, and I don't think shadow.tech has an app for arma yet
I have been using a 17 right now until I get my new old laptop in the mail.
Arma? As in the absolutely hateful milsim?
haha, i get the reference w00t w00t
This is my new monitor for my school desk. Only cost $90 to buy it in China... Crazy that they sell it for $262 overseas...
speaking of old references, anyone ever play The 4th Coming/The 4th Prophecy back in late 90s, early 00s?
16:10
dang
Is still have a definition for notepad++ (which I really don't even use now because of vscode) for their dogshit SQF format
You search AOC on Google and all you get is politics, not computer monitors. Very popular brand here though.
it might not be this exact model, but I did see a review for.. I think this brand on LTT, suggesting it was a great display for a really low price
I think the thing that turned me off was it was a VA not an IPS, so I'm probably mixing it up
You know what would be a great idea? If at the end of something like an if statement you had to put a semicolon after the goddamned braces that encapsulate the series of statements.
heh
She is pretty lady.
This one is an IPS.
But AOC makes a lot of different monitors that are widely available over here.
When she doesn't have her hair pulled back so flat that it compresses her skull. And I will always hate the large 80s glasses on absolutely everyone.
I've been holding off on getting 4k monitor, cause I have two 1440 predators, but I think my next monitor will be one huge curved 4k
🤦♂️
I get that reference too, I think lol
My main monitor is 1440 x 3440. That is perfect for me.
mine is 2560x1440, so not quiet as high resolution, but I have been really happy with them
On my school desk I am just doing the 15 inch laptop screen and a 22 inch 16:10 monitor. So 1080 is all I need.
high end IPS panels seem to last forever it seems.
No reason to spend any more money for my school desk.
Yeah, it's total garbage.
I did few things with sqf
not sure how it is now, but I owned a PC repair business early 00s, it was always the backlite going on than
so yeah, I can easily believe that.
Really kinda like Arma in general
The nice thing about 1440 x 3440 is that you can watch 4k movies that are Cinematic Widescreen at almost full 4k.
(on laptops, LCDs weren't really as widespread as they are now, albeit, plenty were about)
for arma 3 I made a script for a platoon size attack formation (or maybe it was a company size) and then a script for computing projectile impact points when flying jets 🤔
yeah I really want one of those curved displays.. It's my secret dream to play W3 on 4k with curved panel
with my face literally* shoved into it
Curved for Ultrawide only in my opinion.
I see some G9 odyssey thing on LTT a while back, I drooled the whole time.
My 16:10 is flatter than my Japanese girlfriend...
speaking of drooling, I hope a 3080 TI comes out, cause I need something to justify my decision to wait on the 30 series
ooof
curved displays are gimmicks
F for yer girlfriend, the respect key though, not the, y'know.
their only purpose is to hide off axis backlight bleed and/or glow
what! I think they'd be cool, but i've never used one.
Hey. Ain't nothing wrong with small tits and I won't stand for any insinuation otherwise
y'know, good point. I concur.
As much as I like ultrawide I actually have a hard time using super ultrawide.
21:9 is kind of the limit... When they go even wider I start to feel claustrophobic. I actually saved up money for a super ultrawide. Went to the store, tried it, and realized it wasn't for me.
joni, you don't think those uhm, curved panels are good for immersion?
my big concern was as a daily driver, but i keep thinking it would be good for that too
I would rather put a bullet in my brain than be stuck using one display
I very much like the curve on my 21:9 display.
my immersion with a curve would be broken due to the image distortion
What's going on here today?
I guess I hadn't heard about that...
I am actually much happier now that I am using just one display.
Though my 21:9 is used like 2 displays 90% of the time.
That's a legit thing? bah. I need to educate.
Cause I've been really close to picking up this thing, or whatever the modern variant is. ( https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/monitors/gaming/49--odyssey-g9-gaming-monitor-lc49g95tssnxza/ )
Opinions on curved monitors vary a lot: some people claim its the greatest thing ever, others say its just a fad. But so far I havent seen anyone who actually tried to verify the main claim of curved monitors. Manufacturers claim that the curvature ensures that all pixels on t...
If you aren't using multiple displays, you're fucking wrong.
Mr. Jonimake has an irrational grudge against curves, Mr. Starshade. Best to not think too much into it.
hashtag fightme
irrational? 😄
He rants about it on here from time to time.
haha, I use multiple monitors, and have since the CRT days, but I can't lie, I figured having one big display would be a cool improvement
Send me your location, Mr. Justin, I am ready for a fight.
I wasn't looking forward to learning the window management in one screen versus 2, but, yknow
wake me up when we have proper face tracking and view projection to the shape of the display, then I can get a curved monitor
Wait... you don't have the corona, do you? Mr. Justin?
hey thanks for that link joni, i will dig into it.
You do know I carry a firearm, right?
Thanks for ruining my dreams though
👍 for that one.
Ok, I will bring two firearms.
gasp that is very noticeable.
it's kinda why I don't get into fights
I wonder why on all the LTT and other reviews no one talks about that
you probably won't notice it unless you're doing technical drawings though 😉
maybe I just missed the initial memo and they don't feel the need to rehash
but hot damn, that's really noticeable
well, from years of photoshop, which i no longer abuse myself with, that kinda stuff would've been a game breaker. Clients insist on pixel perfect.
The thing Mr. Jonimake intentionally leaves out is that the human eye doesn't see anything straight because it is round.
that makes no sense
this is a matter of display shape vs. the projection used in 3d rendering
all renderers project to a flat plane
(usually)
In practice I use both curved and flat monitors and there is no practical difference with doing precise graphic design.
That's going to be dependent upon a number of variables..
jonimake, what do you use for displays?
But a curved 21:9 just looks so much cooler on a desk.
I'm still looking for a display 😄
Get an AOC.
my old dell wfp 2407 being kaboom and now I have a shitty 27" lenovo thinkvision
I would have to actually use one for work for a while to see if it was a problem or not
temporary from work
I would get one of those new samsung odyssey displays if they came with a flat panel
i keep telling my work to pick me up a 3090 for.. machine learning
My next monitor has to be HDR 10. I just wish I could get an HDR 10 OLED.
