I swear we have crossed into a parallel universe because recently things have been converging for me. Odd co-incidences that add up to be something like a time warp. Perhaps the CERN broke something?

north torrent
#

Maybe you died from the Maga-virus...

I've often said, I won't goto hell, as I am already here.

north torrent
#

Hell is just Earth minus Tim Sweeny.

fathom wadi

You know this is a bit sad, but I thought if I was gonna die from coronavirus, one of my last acts would be to email Tim and thank him for making my last years interesting.

I feel like the technology and availability of assets have finally caught up to where they need to be for me to make what I always wanted to make.

Back in 2012 when I was working in the industry, the idea of making a solo game of any high quality was very daunting indeed. Things like Megascans and the asset store and the amount of stuff available in the engine takes years of work off of my back.

#

Still have to keep the scale small.

fathom wadi
#

yeah the only downside now is there will always be one guy who recognised the assets and calls you a flipper

north torrent
#

But there is zero reason I shouldn't be able to make something as pretty as Red Dead 2 if I keep it small enough.

#

I doubt anyone would ever call me an asset flipper.

fathom wadi
#

I learned just enough modelling to modify stuff so it doesn't look like it originally did. πŸ˜‰

north torrent
#

I think it is easy to recognize an asset flip when things look like they are patched together without careful consideration of color pallet, level of detail, composition, and environmental effects.

#

I think it is really that lack of artistic composition and story telling through things like color that make an asset flip look off. I just don't think the average person has the experience as an artist to understand what it is they are feeling. The average person doesn't have the vocab or knowledge to truly understand what isn't bothering them about it. But that's ok, that is why they are professionals at blah blah blah and game artists are professionals at arting games.

#

But I don't think for a second that taking the time to hand sculpt a rock or tree branch is going to add that artistic composition to a game environment.

fathom wadi
#

thats one of the downsides of having so many assets. Now everyone is a game dev all of a sudden. You used to earn that title, now it's bandied around like a nickname

north torrent
#

Same thing with people who use samples and such to make beats. It isn't that using samples is bad, but a lot of these 'beat makers' only really have beats and not songs because they have yet to learn the storytelling aspect of building a song. The tension and release of certain intervals and how it carries a story through the song.

fathom wadi
#

I don't like sampling stuff but I've done it before. I prefer to make my own licks and riffs with the tools. Being that I can play and know music, it's not hard to replicate manually or adjust influence

north torrent
#

I am fine with more competition.

The only real person holding me back from being great is myself. I know I have the ability to make a better game than most of those people.

fathom wadi
#

im working on a song currently. I might even release it when its mixed up

north torrent
#

The point I was trying to make with the music is that if the same person did go make those melodies from scratch it would still suffer from the same fundamental problems until said person learned the storytelling of music.

#

I just make music for my game. It will get released when I finally finish.

#

Most of the music I would like to make for games is beyond my personal ability. But that's why I chose this particular game with this particular story, because I knew I could make it with my limited music and voice acting abilities.

#

The other game I wanted to make would have required me to rely on other people to do the bulk of the voice acting and even music, and I am just not looking to work on a team at this point.

fathom wadi
north torrent
#

Sounds like the chorus to a love song or something like that.

fathom wadi
#

yeah its a love song for the sea

#

its called See Breeze

#

I get most of my musical influence from walking by and staring at the sea

north torrent
#

Did you hear the theme song I made for Mr. Olympus?

I don't think he liked it very much, which totally makes sense.

fathom wadi
#

nope you got it to hand?

north torrent
#

It's on my Soundcloud, I can get a link.

#

Mr. Soulless Pat has one as well.

#

I was just making themes for different people I knew online and offline to practice FL Studio.

#

Most of them are odd...

fathom wadi
#

I listen to Frank Zappa, you can't odd me out with music πŸ˜„

north torrent
#

Floss hated his.

fathom wadi
#

I like it. It's a bit deranged but it makes sense.

north torrent
#

Thus is life.

#

It has Trashcan Mao.

fathom wadi
#

do you mic up an acoustic or is it a semi-acoustic?

north torrent
#

It is actually a midi guitar.

My acoustic is in quarantine with my computer... sigh... and my microphone broke while in my luggage and gives too much static.

I wrote most of the stuff on acoustic originally, but I suck at recording.

fathom wadi
#

thats got some natural afflections that made it sound like it was played. I get a pretty static sound from mine. Sounds a bit too clean

north torrent
#

Well, all the credit for that has to go to the guys that recorded the Kontakt library.

#

Those guys are the only real reason anything I make sounds good.

#

Just like the bassoon... It isn't my skill that makes it sound good, but the quality of the recording that was used in the Kontakt library. I just have to not mess up my scales and keep rhythm and it sounds like I actually know stuff about music...

fathom wadi
#

Im using Ample Guitar II lite for mine. Its a really nice acoustic sound

north torrent
#

I heard good things about Ample.

I've just already paid the huge amount of money to buy into the Kontakt system, so I just roll with that.

fathom wadi
#

I got a load of that as part of the free stuff, but I don't think I'd spend on it. Theres too much free stuff thats great. Of course theres a lot that are utter crap CPU hogs too πŸ˜„

north torrent
#

I don't know if I have seen any free stuff on the same level as the stuff I buy from 8Dio though.

#

My next project is trying to write a call and response type song where the guitar and bassoon interact in a sort of complex conversation.

fathom wadi
#

it's hard to find a good Orchestra without being a cpu hog I find. The free ones are terrible for it

north torrent
#

I decided to do no full orchestra pieces for my game.

#

I want to go away from the Hollywood feel or typical epic orchestra scores.

fathom wadi
#

I'd like to do something classical at some point. I need to buy Noteworthy Composer or find a new sheet music app. I don't like just free-rolling for complex stuff like that. I prefer to see the music makes actual musical sense on paper

north torrent
#

Well, the way I have done my writing is that each character has a particular musical instrument that symbolizes him or her.

People who are closely related by allegiance or family or role in the store have instruments that I have carefully grouped together.

Different regions of the world are represented by different rhythms.

So out of the main factions in my writing (not my game... I am not game designing something this big, this is just my short story writing I do for fun) the one to the East is represented by 3/3 time and string instruments. The faction to the West is represented by 4/4 time and brass instruments.

Woodwinds remain sort of neutral.

The bassoon for example represents the ancient Redwood trees.

#

In my game I only have 6 characters, so my music is all based around guitar, music box, cello, concertina, tin whistle, and bassoon.

fathom wadi
#

should have a stoner who is represented by a 7/8 timing :p

north torrent
#

All the percussion is done by stomps, claps, or working sounds from the copper mine.

fathom wadi
north torrent
#

Well, if I was making a big project that actually had more that just the one little village, I would have multiple rhythms. Though I have got most of the rhythms from different types of dance. For example the Lizard People all have Cha Cha rhythms.

#

But I'm not musically skilled enough to make all those different types of music, and I really have no reason to, as they are just short stories that I write for the fun of it.

fathom wadi
#

now I have quit smoking, I might try find a clarinet. Always fancied taking it up. The sound of clarinet and oboe resonate with me

north torrent
#

But as a game designer I find it hard not to think about these things when I am writing.

#

I would try bassoon if I was going to learn a new instrument.

fathom wadi
#

I'd still play guitar if I hadn't broken my finger. It burns my soul to know I can't play properly after playing daily for over 15 years

#

if I could afford the corrective surgery I'd do it in a heartbeat. Even considered re-breaking my finger to set it right

north torrent
#

The instrument I struggle with writing for in FL Studio or on my midi keyboard or midi guitar is the accordion or concertina...

fathom wadi
#

I could play the accordion too. My dad bought one but didn't enjoy it so he bought a banjo. So I took the accordion to my friend's house to use for recording stuff. Managed to get used to playing it pretty quick

#

'murica

pearl elk

If it were easy Valve is woulda done it right, but why spend the money when you got as team of monkeys who will do it gor free so you get more profit :)

signal citrus
#

Eh I’m actually super impressed by the vr

sage tendon
#

Valve should just search for a game that would be close to HL3 and just buy the studio, like they do with all their other 'products'

signal citrus
#

I wouldn’t offer another way to play it either if I was also selling hmds

#

Hlvr is as satisfying of an hl3 as anything else

pearl elk
#

Well they did say they couldnt see the game working not in VR, I respect that decision, doesnt mean Im happy about being left out. Its like when MS and Epic did Halo and Gears on Xbox you think I ran out and bought one, hell no, if they dont want me as a customer on my preferred platform... f em πŸ™‚

#

Way I see it is Alyx isnt really for fans of the original game either, so Im fine with that.

quick thorn
#

@pearl elk After playing Half-Life Alyx, I have to agree. I can't think of a way to translate game to traditional hardware properly. It's just, as far as interaction goes, it's just so functionality different from a traditional game as many of controls are based on gestures, there's not a clean way of translating it, at least without taking away from the experience

pearl elk
#

What does ruffle my feathers is when Valve talk about not releasing a new HL episode because they didnt want to pump out HL games just to make profit. Even though they complain about the costs of development of the episodes and going on to pump out games with sequels for profit in all the years since. The holier than thou bullshit is such a front

signal citrus
#

Hl alyx is in every way for the fans though. It honestly just feels like another hardware barrier every new series in half life hits

pearl elk
#

They act like HL was some sort of transformative moment for the industry but it really wasnt, it was a great game and deserves high scores but its not the game which gave us GPUs being so prevalent. Sure this Alyx could push hardware but I dont believe VR will ever replace flat screens, it will always be an aside because people are lazy and want to sit on their arse and move as little as possible

signal citrus
#

I play sitting in office chair lol

pearl elk
#

It might be for Valves current fans but its not for us, the ones who bought HL day one

signal citrus
#

I’d disagree, I couldn’t be more pleased with the fan service in it

pearl elk
#

fan service has nothing to do with fans

#

its to please pop culture

signal citrus
#

What is it that they did wrong then?

pearl elk
#

Nothing, the game is probably great, just not for me because of the platform πŸ™‚

#

I really dont need VR to enjoy art

signal citrus
#

Hm yeah I mean it justifies vr to me a lot more than vr justifies it

pearl elk
#

Yes obviously they want to sell the platform theyve invested years in but why not just pump out HL titles then if its all about the bottom line

signal citrus
#

Does feel like the amount of effort they put into it could have occupied much of the time. But idk, pumping out hl titles is something valve isn’t known to handle well.

pearl elk
#

Yeah I just dunno if theyre actually thinking about the gamers like they say they are, I applaud their effort to push VR but its just not for me, theres too much friction, I prefer flat screens just sit and go... well if Im not forced to update πŸ˜›

signal citrus
#

If anything, the hl alyx name and not being hl3, maybe they are aware of such fan backlash if they were to just name it hl3

#

Eh lol, HL2 and dx9 were pretty hand in hand too

#

HL2 came with my Radeon 9800xt

pearl elk
#

In all honesty Ive never been the biggest fan of motion controls, they have their place but how can they replace the mouse and keyboard without cutting your legs off

#

Some of my best memories of HL wernt the shooting bits, it was the combination of movement and combat, same goes for all my favourite Valve games. This one regardless of what theyve added for the upper body will feel like a step backward... well if you had legs

#

Id play it seated VR with kb/m if it were an option

#

I am actually curious if someone using motion controls could hold their own against gamepad and kb/m players in a DM without teleporting

yeah it was fun when my mother, who has been disabled for 30 years, had all her money stopped, her car taken off her. Had to take out loans, was so ill she lost stones in weight, had depression so bad I literally was scared she would take all her medication. Super funny right?

oh this was right after my dad died too

they were married over 30 years

you're right, that is funny

The whole thing in the US was driven by a fear that if they told the general pop to use masks it would make it harder for medical workers to get it

mossy nexus
#

Thing with C-19 is a lot of people get other illnesses at the same time/just after like pneumonia

primal spoke
#

yeah it was guilt trip in the US at first.

plucky pagoda
#

With out testing you just have to assume anything is it

primal spoke
#

if you have a mask, you are wrong, give to medical pros.

fathom wadi

I've had pneumonia before. It almost killed me. Doc said I was 6 hours from death and if I had passed out one more time, I would have gone.

primal spoke
#

never had pneumonia before.

plucky pagoda

I tried telling my 16 yr that. Not sure he gets it. I was like worst case we keep some distance and we didn't have to, but if I assume none of us has it and I'm wrong someone could die.

primal spoke

Animals are contracting Covid 19 now also.

#

wtf

fathom wadi

its like a really bad flu but it gives you side effects, like Pluracy. Thats the real killer. Your lungs fill up with mucus until you can't breath without it feeling like a knife in your lungs

lusty elk

don't give your mask to medical pros, use it yourself as they won't even have a use for it

plucky pagoda

plucky pagoda

The new projections in the US are better than the last ones. Ohio in particular. Hoping the new ones we get from the Dept. of Health Wed. are similiar.

primal spoke

I think the numbers should go down faster as the number of infected wear masks even though they might be asymptomatic.

lusty elk

hahah I was a total bellend when I was younger. Ignored politics, ignored being a part of society. Pretty much just got wasted and partied. Fell in love with the wrong girl though. Got cheated on multiple times. Then when she thought I was out of town, she brought back a guy. I almost killed him, but I held my temper knowing it wasn't his fault. From that moment on, I quit all of that. I went back to college, got 2 jobs at the college whilst I studied (IT support and Learning Support tutor). I knuckled down and learned my trade. Ever since I have just been trying to be successful.

Its all about family for me now. What is good for them rather myself

plucky pagoda

I mean I still have a scotch once in a while, but it's rare. Maybe once a year rare.

Here he is playing "the impossible drum song" called The Black Page (so called because the musical notation was so complex it looked like a black page. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDQE82ElyJg

Zappa Plays Zappa public performance. Special guests Terry Bozzio & Steve Vai explode the scene in this version of the Black Page.

I think Bebop started the trend of music that isn't for the ears or the listeners, but as a matter of showing off that you can do something other people can't.

funny as Frank used to use bebop in early influence. But then he scoped through almost all musical styles

I'm not a Bebop fan... I think it killed jazz music...

In 2010, "The Black Page" was performed by a young British percussionist Lucy Landymore in the BBC Young Musician of the Year. that is so cool.

#

I can't even remember the structure, nevermind keep up with it

Honestly, that song you posted about, Mr. Rogerson, I can't see any enjoyable factors to listening to it...

And Steve Vai sounds horrible there...

fathom wadi
#

I guess the intonation offends your ear.

#

It's more about the expression than the melody or tune or enjoying it even. Consider that not all music is meant for everyone and it becomes a musical opinion. I can live with that. But Zappa is an acquired taste like everyone else.

north torrent

That's what I meant before, it became music for musicians as opposed to music for listeners.

yeah absolutely agree with that

its not so much relaxing music, its studying music

Not that there is anything inherently wrong with that, but it is an important distinction to make.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmV3Bf2veAg This will explain the Black Page if the technicalities interest you. It's some mind-blowing concepts.

Frank Zappa's "Black Page #1" is known for being difficult to play. But is it? If so, why? I decided to learn it to find out.

Here I document the process of learning "The Black Page" on the drums, from start to finish. I spent one week learning this piece before recording the...

Free isnt always without value or cost, liberty doesnt mean you are free at the cost of anothers freedom. The deprivation of liberty in this case is to protect it, not oppress freedom, people who dont get this think a police state is anything in which they cant do what they want when they want all the time, which means... #

proof can be seen today

compare south american countries, where blood is mixed

A lot of the death was when the Spanish backed one group of natives to go genocide another.

there was some very scifi and future things build from those engineers and scientists

fringe sundial
