if I had more money than I needed to live, I would only waste it on game dev.
I don't like the quality of a lot of plugins in the marketplace, but i'm picky about scale and optimizations.
I've spent too much of my life having to choose between... Do I want a coat to keep me warm, or do I want to eat this week...
Or worrying if my bank card will be declined when I try to buy something.
Being in the US and living paycheck to paycheck sucks. If I never moved to China, I would be very worried about the maga-virus right now, because I never had any savings.
I would be very worried about how I'm going to pay for food and rent.
Can relate there somewhat.
Was bad enough I couldn't afford to spend more than 58 USD on food a month.
I did that once with some family friends in Spain @plucky pagoda . The drinks in the UK are watered down, so when I hit some cheap spirits that weren't, I ended up on a 9/11 rant about the new world order and almost choked to death on my own puke, ruining their guest duvet and puking in the shower.
Family helped out a bit at least, and I learned how to cook from scratch.
I'm from Arizona.
Arizona? I thought they have a good economy?
I think it has mixed results.
I was stupid in my twenties.
me too. self-destructive to the max
I made decent money, but I had to pay a lot on my school loans and other things.
My twenties were fine but my teens though... massive mistakes.
Schooling here can really fuck you up for life >.<
It depends
It does for sure, you have to know what to do.
Your paycheck can disappear pretty quickly when they take out $400 for school loans, $400 for health insurance, $250 for car loan, $100 for insurance on said car, $800 for rent.
I only really struggled when I was younger, but even when I got past that point I was never able to make any true headway in having a large savings account.
The tuition of where I recieved a master's was over $50K per year
800 for rent is low.
Isn't there a starter project that has point and click to move units?
That much for health insurance?
seems ass backwards to me. We should train those who can handle a masters for free.
I don't live fancy, I'm a teacher.
Jesus I don't want to get off the gov check now.
400 health? That is a good plan or very little employer contribution
Marc, I'm going to have to do something for you. I've been racking my brain for days trying to decide to what to work on and this is perfect.
I could certainly live off the money I made as a teacher in the United States.
I could slowly save money and in several years have a safety net saved back in the bank.
But I didn't see any future where I would ever have enough money to buy a home or afford to have a family, so I decided to take my chances with going somewhere else.
Didn't work out well at all for me the first year I was in China, but over time I found better opportunities, and I am pretty happy with the money I am making now.
Thats awesome. Im glad you're ballin now
If you make a million from it, just dont spend it all on gamedev. π
yeah no worries there.
I'm a numbers and finance guy. I've already planned out how to invest a million to get 200k a year to live on for the rest of my life.
I can also make a million last for the rest of my life but I live another 5 years and spend 200k a year on coke and hookers :p
@plucky pagoda how?
I can see that.
Stock options mostly. Cash covered puts and calls and a few other things.
I call it my "Chris Farley Investment Programme"
Before I went to China I was still using an i7-920 first generation and a GTX-750ti.
I never had the extra money to upgrade my rig, so it was 8 years old at the time, with a few changes to it.
But now I can buy the computer parts that I need to make the game I really want.
I could go buy an RTX 2080ti right now if I wanted to, but I am not going to be that trigger happy with my spending. I still have to think about long term savings.
When a 2070 does the job for a much better price, I will just stick with that for now. Hell of a lot better than an 750ti.
When my dad died I got 20k from his IRA that I split with my brother and turned it into 100k. But we needed a lot of money then and eventually I couldn't make it fast enough to keep the account with a big enough balance.
Amazon recurring payment 0 interest
Technically cheaper on the last payment
Because inflation
I've been saving money into my computer fund for over a year, Mr. Ball126. I just don't want to spend it all at once.
I have nothing but my balls and my word, and I don't break them for nobody.
With the raise in pay I got after being fired, that money can go into my savings fund as well.
Maybe half into my game dev budget and half into my personal savings budget (which is much higher than the game dev budget).
That's awesome you have a game dev budget tho
I need to set one, I get on buying streaks sometimes
And Im like, I didn't save any money in a while.
That's the money for computer parts, software like Zbrush and Substance, buying musical instrument libraries for my game music, buying assets like animations, and stuff like that.
I went a little bit over my music budget. I still have $300 left in my computer parts budget.
Upgrading my PC when I was starting out with game development and had no money was the best investment I probably ever made, my pc at the time could barely run an empty ue4 project.
Probably if I didn't upgrade my PC then I wouldn't be where I am today since I wouldn't have anything to learn and work on
kinda weird to think about
@broken sigil where are you today?
I always liked the idea of investing in myself, Mr. Man.
Gold watches don't count mao
It's kinda weird that the turn based strategy still uses a spring arm
I was using an old Radeon 8xxx card when UE4 launched. It was years old at that point. However I lucked out and won Β£1500 so I spent it on a brand new PC and got work on a VR game. Without that, Im not sure I would be here now.
Got a good paying job I always wanted and love π @primal spoke
Buying my i7-920 rig back in the day put me in a financial bind, but without that rig I wouldn't know half the stuff I know now.
By the time I built my new rig though, I wasn't crunched for money.
In game dev?
yeah
Buy stock in Mr. Man?
I've been lucky that my wife was okay with me not making money for a year or two and spending a bunch on a new computer.
Are you publicly traded?
@plucky pagoda yes you are
The best thing anyone trying to work on their own can have in the US is a spouse with health insurance
Are you publicly traded?
@north torrent π
You should buy the 2080TI
64GB ram
And new CPU
IDK which?
Health insurance in the US shouldn't even be a thing
It would be a huge boon to small biz if it wasn't tied to employment
I was going to buy stock in Mr. Blue Man.
That would be a bad investment π
I think there is a happy medium between being too cheap to invest in myself, and just buying things to show off...
I think an RTX 2070 and 32gb of ram is just fine for the moment.
I'll buy an RTX 3080ti, a Ryzen 4950x, and 128gb of ram as a reward to myself when I finish my game.
Then I will make a second game with that.
128GB ram?
It'd be nice if there was a button you could push and it added events for all the inputs you've setup in project settings to the controller
You rendering 4K physics sims? While watching YouTube?
1.21 Terabytes
128, Why not?
Wouldn't fit my ITX motherboard though.
Maybe your money could be better spent elsewhere
yes like buying me 128GB of ram
Like a better case or MOBO?
My current case is a small form factor micro-atx case, so I plan on buying a totally new case and motherboard.
If you shop budget parts you can spend about 500$ on a rig with good enough hardware to last you half a decade or more.
Absolutely.
I am not actually planning out my next rig at the moment, as I don't know what next years products will be.
The point was, I will upgrade when I finish a game or two and have earned top notch stuff.
Until then I will stick with the more than competent 2070.
If you're running godot
RTX 3090ti extra OCX mega super
Not UE4
If your not using ue4 cpu isn't even that important though that's the easiest to find budget parts for.
there are some rumors about ddr5 ram releasing in 2021
This shitty cpu can do ue4 projects, but working in c++ is what killed my productivity actually.
Opening the friggin game to test right after compilation is what i want.
Not to open the level editor.
Ooo a bullet train.
PC build under $500 running UE4 5 years from now would choke and die.
You can get an 8 core for like 40 it's really possible.
The gpu I found was 120 at the time but really I could have done a lot better.
Ummm, not buying a $40 CPU
It kicks ass compared to the 8 core black vishera amd cpu I got.
Not to sound snobbish, unless its from a friend or something
Already had it's rating checked.
There's places you can go to to get a list of cpu performance data, yo ucan compare all that and look for lower prices for the rating.
The black vishera cpu i got was 90 at the time I believe which still isn't horrible.
You what they say about when it sounds too good to be true
Higher end of the ddr3 generation.
when I was starting out I had an old 2 core athlon I believe lol
How'd that work out for you
It didn't π
You better not build lighting..... ever!
He could run factorio perfectly fine for sure π
God that game is amazing single thread performance wise.
The enginee game is heavier than the package
He would be able to run factorio development
But seriously on that note i've seen people spend over 1k for a cpu that doesn't even do as well as mine.
I believe it
Though theirs was ddr4 comatible
But still would never buy a $40 CPU unless had no other choice.
There are even more people outside now...
A lot of server cpus though are getting super cheap with how ddr4 is becoming mainstream, now is the time to buy into them.
people arnt allowed outside
Looks like they are here.
ddr4 been out for a minute
here if they catch you outside it's a $4k fine, only 1 person per family is allowed to go out for food
mao you in Wuhan?
Doesn't look that big an improvement at least compared to the ddr2 -> ddr3 difference.
I think there is a certain point in your development career where the time spent on slow computers is more costly than just buying a $2,000 rig.
Does that fine let you stay out the rest of the day at least?
Damn good question.
nope, you get put into quarantine without choice
Shanghai is opening back up.
I can't leave for 5 more days though, because I came in from outside China.
it's either stay home in self isolation and or pay 4k and get put in quarantine
are you sure theyre real people and not just figments of your imagination because youve got cabin fever
^^
cuz I literally see no one in this photo π
Got the ultra wide?
Well, they also quarantine people from infected provinces.
So if the US was doing this, then people from New York that travel to Minnesota would have to be in mandatory (beat you with a stick if you leave) quarantine for 14 days.
At their lowest point, the Xeon E5-2670 was selling for as little as $70. PC enthusiasts following the secondhand market were snapping them up in disbelief over the price.
Not at home, but in a government chosen hotel run by hazmat dudes.
They let you vpn?
Minnesota needs to quarantine people, that's my point.
did you just assume hazmat persons gender
Those cpus used to be over 1k by the way.
Weβre under lockdown Mao
VPN is not something you ask for permission on. You just do it.
Two weeks since 11:59 yesterday
So you don't let people from New York in?
That's the key.
An ankle bracelet thermometer?
But 35 dollars for a plane ticket
Keep New Yorkers out.
A mix I did of the Lockdown music from UT3 - mixed using the original game music files. I wanted a song of this music since the game has it all cut up in parts. COPYRIGHT EPIC GAMES - I DO NOT PERSONALLY OWN THIS MUSIC, I ONLY MIXED IT
you know what would be even worse... If all people that got infected turn into zombies after 2 months
Xeons look the way to go when buying budget cpu's, they do relatively alright comapred to new ones, worse sure but not a lot so, even for 70$ that's a hell of a good deal. You can get budget gpu's as well to save you a ton of money, what you mostly want is at least 4GB vram, the processing umph usually doesn't matter especially if your a game dev, as you want to support lower end hardware.
I still need to go back to Shenzhen to get my ultra-wide... Hopefully next weekend...
ultra-wide SCSI
Just waiting for them to open my old school.
Ultra wide Scuzzy
Itβs really not a bad time to migrate out of mn
I'm putting rice with my stew today.
Mao turned into chef Boyardee over there
I think China just shut down the border, so you can't come here, Mr. Soulless Pat.
When you gonna stream the cooking show?
They also don't allow phones with buttons here, because the button carries the virus.
You can get such a gpu for less than 110$ for sure, i'll go with that number as a high estimate, so 90+110+60(mobo)+60(ram)+70(psu)+30(case)=420
Yes you for sure can go under 500
Actually ram might be 80 since you need 16GB these days.
I want to move to one of those secluded country areas with the new internet infrastructure
@signal citrusoh? Not a subdivision controlled by a monopoly?
Spectrum is outrageously expensive and they own a lot of the US internet >.<
You have options for ISP?
It's them or another isp that charges maybe 5$ less for flipping dsl and horrible customer support.
That and they had an issue where I couldn't port forward.
They refused to look into it much deeper.
My upstream surpasses my downstream for the first time ever
But it's only those two isps here.
No options
For the most part spectrum owns everything, and they raised prices since solidifying their hold.
Max this hardware downloads is about 10 MB/s anyway. But I wouldn't mind that being cut in half.
I'd be happy for less than half for paying 5 less.
I know.
Bits not bytes
Lockdown for me is a track that hits close to home. G house is a genre in todays day and age that really takes hip hop and brings it into the electronic music world. The streets are an aspect of hip h
But then again I was poor for a long while.
Still am now that the job put me on a two week vacation >.>
Paid?
Probably not i'd assume but it's my first job.
At a pizza hut, I doubt they'll pay.
That and I do less than part time to hold onto the gov check.
You feeling any better mons?
I thought pizza places were hiring lots of people
It's a food business.
They don't want to risk contamination and I had a minor cold.
They want people but a lot of people either called off or called sick, and their rule is to keep them off work for two weeks.
I'm in a hotel...
Lol that track.
Never!
Hey i eat at my desk to wow.
Life is full of splashes. I will never take the life out of my soup!
I've been eating at my desk for years. Never had room for a kitchen table.
You have a rice cooker?
Same.
The rice was delivered to me.
I do o/ It's awesome.
Seriously they are so versatile.
And nothing tastes as good to me as a properly made vegie rice meal.
Ooo custom temp settings.
@tough sierra you vegan?
Or is that a timer.
I was for a while, i just usually avoid meat as it's very expensive.
I bought the model without a timer.
Challenges working at the hut?
Actually since working there my meat intake went up a lot, they throw out so much food I can't help but take it home.
Honestly their stuff is good >.<
Dang
Have you ever had Chinese Pizza Hut, Mr. Koi?
Not had the chance.
Well, you can't come here now, they shut down the border...
I just ate some Frosted Mini Wheats
How does Pizza Hut get the crust so greasy?
Grease.
Bread, rice, cashews, carrets, flax seeds, beans, some spices, grind all that up and you have vegan meat, or similar mixes can do the trick.
And my god.
It tastes just like geta.
Oh.
Sounds more expensive than meat though...
Pop tarts have crushed animal bones in them also
Have you seen the price of cashews?
We geese the pans before actually putting the dough on them, and they proof like that.
It's actually a lot cheaper.
A ton so
I thought it was something like that
You don't need much cashews, most of it's rice/bread, and at least here vegies are super cheap.
That and i make my own bread.
Not a fan of Pizza Hut, hard to forget that greasy bread
Best typo of the day, Mr. Koi.
Geese the pan
Understandable, also it depends how much the pans are greased, you'd be amazed how many mistakes we all make there.
And it's understandable ones, there's a lot to keep track of.
You're not sick of pizza yet?
Hell no I love bread stuffs ^-^
I like Pizza Hut.
Have you started trading goods with other local restaurants
And there's so much variety, lemon pepper fries and jalapeno pepper poppers and chicken.
Like a pizza for tacos
Older sibling trades lunch sometimes but I don't socialize that much.
I like tacos.
Lol funny you said tacos >.<
Tacos in China?
There is one Taco Bell in Shanghai.
I am from Arizona.
Home made tacos... I miss that.
I made tacos recently
Arizona used to be a part of Mexico
On a related note spuds sell super cheap here, they make awesome fries, chips, and other stuffs ^-^
In China, Taco Bell is marketed as 'Authentic California Food'.
Lol!
LOL
They are not allowed to mention Mexico anywhere.
Marketing calls everything authentic.
So you can't get a good taco in China, check.
I know some places in Shenzhen to get real tacos.
I have only been in quarantine in Shanghai, so I haven't been able to go out and look here.
A good taco is hand made tortillas
But there is a huge immigrant town here in Shanghai.
Taco bell has dank ideas but yeah not the freshest food at least here >.<
Salsa, guacamole, carne asada
Ooo~
There is a place in Shanghai called LΗowΓ i Street, where it is almost 100% foreigners living there. You can get all sorts of foreign food.
Chipotle called foreign?
No, that isn't a thing in China.
It's like MCD being called foreign
But immigrants from Mexico living in Shanghai would want to sell their tacos on Laowai Street.
Mexicans live in Shanghai?
Home made pico de galo
You've seen them?
There are some in Shenzhen.
I am new to Shanghai, I haven't left quarantine.
I don't know what that is but I want some.
I don't think the hazmat guy is Mexican, but I could be wrong.
These two cities are super international. You can always find a German restaurant run by Germans and an Italian restaurant run by Italians and a Canadian restaurant run by Canadians.
Poutine
I had poutine for the first time in China...
I will assume it is better than what I got.
Someday I will visit Canadia and find out.
Schnitzel is really good.
German beer is very common here.
German beer is also good.
Germany and Australia seem to have the best trade deals with China, at least when it comes to things I see at the grocery store.
Have you ever heard of 'Point Roberts', Mr. Soulless Pat?
Budweiser is the only US brand of beer you can find, but I never drink it. Why would I when imported German beer is almost the same price?
Even Chinese beer is better than Budweiser...
You can get Corona beer here as well.
Budweiser is crap
Have not
Corona probably pissed off right now
Second worst beer I have ever tasted, Mr. Ball126.
Corona bout to have a huge marketing campaign when this is all over
You talking to me?
No, to the almost Canadian.
You live on the opposite border.
Well, Point Roberts is right next to Vancouver, about an hour drive. It is a little piece of land than hangs into the US side of the 49th parallel.
Going to sleep... don't get infected
Nice
You should go live there.
Blame Mr. Pat on that one.
At least weβve got mapquest USA
For the kinds to get to Highschool, they have to enter Canadia, leave Canadia, and go to school in the US on the other side.
Iβm out of school
But I bet you could get a job in Vancouver and live in the US still.
But that it interesting
Go to Canadia if you get sick, because healthcare is free.
Vancouvers not as good as Landrover
They do sound similar
Someone besides me who wonders why budwiser is more expensive than the other stuff yet is sold the most?
Woah.
In the US I like Blue Moon.
this is a Vancouver no?
Fat Tire was what I had long ago
Do you want to see my first car?
You could mix vodka with other stuff for a cheap strong kick.
I think thereβs some kind of saying about sicker and liquor and some order of beer
What's the use with a truck with a mini tailgate?
This might not be that kind of vehicle but still.
It was actually all sorts of practical...
I had a red Jeep Grand Cherokee
I guess it doesn't weigh a ton so gas is cheaper.
My family has skills in car mechanics and construction though, so ma had rather big trucks, not "fat" body frames but actually big interiors and such for hauling lumber and such.
So it is sort of like a convertible, but sort of like just sitting in the back of a truck....
Was that the car that flipped over a lot?
Interesting combination.
I might be thinking of the geo tracker
So my friends would stand up in the back while I was driving and hold onto the roof of the car/truck/thing...
I can't legally drive but even i'm getting annoyed with how difficult cars are to repair anymore.
Lol nice.
I got a 90s Holden Jackaroo out in the paddock, its like an Izusu Trooper
And when I needed to I could fold up the back seat and load guitar amps and a drumkit in the back of it.
How many people even know how to replace break pads or even a tire?
For me it was tube tv screens for halo over lan
I pay people to work on my breaks.
Oh nice.
My family is mostly working class though, we have to conserve money, repair shops rip people off big time.
brakes*
It can cost you just 20$ ish to replace your own pads, how much does it cost to have that done in the shop again?
I remember somewhere around 60$ but that was a long time ago.
I dont miss carrying them
I miss that old conventional analog tv I used to have in the bedroom to play videogames on, was so comfortable, perfect size and the roundness somehow helped.
Oof right?
They are magical with their alluring glow of persistency
Fun times getting zappy zapped.
Oh dude.
When I was in elementary, some kid touched my spine with one hand, then touched the tv with another hand and sent a zap right in the mid of my back >.<
Mechanical~
That was my odd keyboard. I showed it on hear a while back.
I have a separate number pad.
On my next keyboard I'm going to get one with a 10 key, but at the time I bought that, it was the only wireless mechanical at the store.
at least you have almost all blocks
Youβve thought of it all
Have you applied for an 'Emergency Disaster Loan', Mr. Soulless Pat?
I'm not sure if independent game developers count as small businesses though.
But it is basically free money if you are a small business and are lucky enough to get it.
Itβs definitely a small business but nah. The quarantine hasnβt affected things
I know that I don't count as a small business.
It is part of Senate bill that just got passed.
It is basically for independent contractors and small businesses to survive the maga-virus quarantine.
It is a loan that doesn't have to be repaid... so basically a grant, but called a loan.
This is the stimulus package forgivable loan for small business owners, independent contractors, and sole proprietors.
This is from the third stimulus bill from the Trump Administration. You can receive a stimulus grant for $10,000 as a forgivable loan if you make your appli...
For anyone who does need the help and qualifies as an independent contractor or small business.
Im confused, how does Doom Eternal run better than Borderlands 3?
Tis Optimized :S
I feel like it has somethin to do with scaleform
cant wait for the Doom Eternal Mod tools π
Mod a banana into Doom.
If I was a software company, I would be giving out 90 day free trials right now.
Many people who aren't normally stuck at home are stuck at home, who knows, maybe they will pick up your software and learn it... Then buy the real thing after the 90 days.
Someone was talking about split-screen yesterday... Forgot who, I was drunk.
What is a Taiwan?
its a part of China but not a part of China
depending on which side of a trade war youre sitting
There are a lot of parts of China that aren't really China.
the US is the opposite though they dont want Puerto Rico π
The US has shoved impossible amounts of debt on to Puerto Rico, and they just want to keep it around as a debt slave, but ignore it whenever there is a disaster that needs federal attention.
I think Australia should do that with Tasmania π
theres so many potshots at Valve in BL3 π
I got a gun called an Unshippable Freeman
I just realized the building I was looking at across the street from my quarantine is actually one of those iPhone sweatshops where people work themselves to death...
Valve is easy to take shots at.
It all started with a freak nuclear accident that gave all goats the necessary intelligence to quickly overthrow their human owners with their powerful rams, high jumps, and ear-blowing bleats. No, wait, that wasnβt it. The goats were intelligent from the very beginning, but s...

theres abit of graffiti at one point which says "no hats" its in the casino, seems like a big coincidence
Just arrived to the Unreal slack server, and I need some guidance which channel or subgroup I need to pose a question about adding a volume B-spline capability to the geometry engine of Unreal. The context is that next generation FEM unifies geometry and the shape functions making it much easier for the simulation to modify the geometry and model accurate model interactions, such as fluid-structure interactions and deformation. We have that new FEM engine but our geometry modeler is not integrated into an animation environment and thus blocks us from doing animations that explain either the physics or the optimization that is going on underneath. We are exploring if an integration with Unreal can deliver such high-fidelity animations of complex physics.
do you want to render geometry output from an existing FEM engine?
you can ask in the cpp/graphics channels
The need is a volume B-spline push-pull modeler integrated into an animation package so that we can generate visualizations of the iso-geometric analysis process. Traditional FEM separates geometry from analysis causing a break in the automatic geometry modification process that optimization needs to go through as you would need to remesh the new geometry.
not really sure with that terminology, but there is a spline component in the engine, if you want to generate meshes using splines (such as BREP), that isnt a tool and you would need to add your own module
do yo umean something like a subdivision surface modeller?
some math geniuses here?
How would I write such a function in code?
you cant just use a curve?
@pearl elk no
There's a ton of free web apps that will plot functions for free. You should be able to find an equation that will work rather quickly. But you can use a curve fairly easy too.
@molten granite I suspect if you can talk to the people who are more familiar with the engine and have more in-depth knowledge of the source that you will find you can do as you are wanting. There's a few people who watch the cpp channel who I think would be of more help.
There's functionality available that should aid the process quite a bit.
I've done a very small amount of mesh manipulation in UE and will gladly point you towards anything I can, but I suspect my depth of knowledge in that area may be insufficient.
What kind of noodles should I make today?
Pho
pork, egg, sweet and spicy base
and a lime wedge
I just had stir fried beef and green beans with a fried egg for breakfast
I don't have that in my quarantine hotel...
Continental breakfast challenge?
umm do those colours represent food groups
I think just level of spicy.
I like these two.
That one in the lower left my wife eats and the spice kills me. If they're the same as the ones we get which they look like they are.
You get noodle from China?
I make miso for breakfast sometimes and like it. I use the white or red paste and make a thick base then chop up and add any left over pork we have and some cabbage.
I grew up near an AirForce base and most of my family worked for the DOD. I have a lot of freinds from all over and a high number who have at least one parent from China, Vietnam, or Korea.
@pastel tiger Curvefit to a polynominal
I shop at an import grocery near us for a lot of stuff
My dad spent a long time in Vietnam during the war and learned to cook over there. He kept at it for most of his life including making kimchi at home.
I don't have any bratwurst left to put in my soup...
I could order more, but I'll be out of quarantine in a few days.
He made his Kimchi kinda weird though. He would grow bokchoi and use it but he would grow it until it got fairly big. That and some radish, I'll have to look up what it's called.
Bet that's a relief.
There is a cheeseburger place 200km from my hotel, so I'm just going to walk down there and eat as soon as they release me.
I wish they'd take stronger action here. The US has too many stupid people. We're paying the price of a failing education system.
just think of the war stories you can tell your grandchildren about the great pandemic of 2020 when you were locked in a room in China
Cheeseburger in Chinese translates to 'Beef Fort'.
Hell yeah. We've been cooking at home for over a month for every meal. I feel better than I have in years.
Daikon, that's the radish he grew for his kimchi
I should order one.
I can get food delivered from the local grocery store within 3 or 4 hours.
nice. It's taking 3 days at least for a pickup order here.
and then they cancel half the items
Only takes them 40 minutes to deliver, but the hazmat dudes are in no hurry to bring stuff to me. That's why I can't get a cheeseburger. It would sit around for hours before I got it.
sucks.
I'm in Shanghai. They are opening things back up here.
get a cheeseburger in a can
Most people in the US refuse to believe that China has things under control. I guess a mix of jealousy and anger on their parts.
But it isn't too bad not having my cheeseburger... I made stew.
you should totally get the hazmat guys to selfie with a cheeseburger, its hazardous materials
I'm just eating noodles now because I had stew earlier today. Saving the rest for tomorrow.
Yeah, it's the whole no one does anything better than us mindset that's hammered down people's throats
I wish American society had more of a sense of social responsibility and less of the "I can do what I want"
nationalism yay holds up his flag and waves
One whole province of China just got decimated by this thing, but the rest of China has some of the lowest rates in the world.
it's quite scary the amount of indoctrination that US has as a culture, and they have the cheek to criticise Communist countries
The way I look at it you can appreciate how effective their response was and that does not mean you're excusing anything else they do or some other aspect of their government.
The way China is doing things certainly has many problems... But people aren't dieing in massive numbers in Shanghai, so I guess I will ignore the incompetence with paper work.
What do you make of the reports that business/factories etc are 'faking' the return to normal work?
I can literally see people returning to the iPhone sweatshop out my window.
you shoulda seen what Hollywood did to anyone they suspected was communist, it was far worse, thats not even getting into the KKK and the like
For many people it's not much of a choice. Even here in the US a lot of people are barely getting from pay check to pay check.
Both the US and China have some good points and some very bad points. But I just try to roll with the facts.
Hell, a lot of people are already out of money for food. Especially people working for tips.
When I worked for tips, bartending at night clubs, I needed every Saturday night. I made all my money in 3 hours on that night. Without it I was broke.
Most countries are very similar in many regards. At least as the common person goes.
its spread so badly in the US, I just hope they can get ontop of it or travel restrictions will be in place for a long time
The Chinese system of government and obsession with 'saving face' made the leaders in Wuhan afraid to go public with the virus, as it would ruin their entire careers. That caused things to get out of hand before the federal government was ever aware.
But the federal government stepped in and was very strict about things.
It created a lot of paid for the people in Wuhan... but it saved placed like Beijing and Shanghai and Shenzhen.
Between 11pm and 2am on Saturday I would pour 10k worth of drinks and make $300 to $600. Imagine someone working like that with kids to feed, they miss one shift and they're done.
Probably counting on it to buy groceries for Sunday morning breakfast.
Not to mention all the people working under the table who won't be able to get unemployment
I can't change the bad things China or the US had done in the past. But I can try to open up a less 'indoctrinated' view of the world to my students and teach them both problem solving skills and the importance of compassion for other people.
Maybe their generation won't fuck things up as much.
A friend of mine took over one of the nightclubs in Dayton a while back and he's really stressing. The guy has busted his ass for decades.
I think the fact that society and mostly corporations had so many people living on such tight paycheck to paycheck budgets is the real unforgivable thing.
Society should be better than that with the technology we have in 2020.
But as companies make record profits, the working class doesn't make a penny more. It all goes to stock buybacks to make the top guys mega rich.
Yeah, The problem is the same here. People don't understand the scale of really large numbers.
They don't understand how outrageous the income gap is.
or its effect on the broader economy
The guy who bought 17,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to hoard, he is no different from how the mega rich are with money. There is no moral difference between him and Mike Bloomberg.
You can't praise unrestricted capitalism though and hold his actions in contempt. That's the cognitive dissonance I see.
America is quasicapitalist
I never praise pure capitalism... or pure any other form.
I think any successful system should have a bit of capitalism, socialism, and communism mixed into one.
I think there's too many people to allow something like who can build something cheapest decide the shape of our society.
I think the US could be fixed with just a few changes, honestly. I don't think the US is fundamentally broke.
We need to take a more intentional approach
Focus on long term instead of disposable gratification
The US needs to go on a diet.
From what I see in the news
I do
The Division 3 is about release in USA
I'm on the quarantine diet. I've lost 2kg.
hows that ?
I've gain like 10 lbs
yeah thats more my case
I'm feeling better than ever. But I was really sick all last month.
No cheeseburgers.
I swear not a day goes by you don't mention cheeseburgers somewhere
Cheeseburgers are life.
guess what I had for dinner?
Not being sick is good
That should be my farming game. The quest to make the greatest cheeseburger ever through the ultimate farm to table techniques.
Spoiler Alert - It will involve a Yak.
Mons, brains?
I had hamburgers, with cheese, tomato, egg, bacon, lettuce and secret sauce
Homemade?
Have you ever had an elk burger?
My kid ate an elk burger and said it was good.... but I don't trust his opinion
keep the calm and play COD
Kids don't know taste.
as I played The Division 1 made me total trained for this situation
no problem
π
Might make me a bad person to ask this, but do you think real-estate is going to get cheaper in areas that had severe outbreaks? Like Italy?
Probably not
Probably already is cheaper
tbh
Demand drops and so does price
If supply stays the same
Or goes up
Well, when someone dies that means one more house to go up for sale.
I hear theres a house in Amityville going cheap
Not a good part of the country to live in.
I think this is a huge market correction
Everything was getting so expensive and overvalued
apparently rich people are more likely to catch it cuz they travel more
Not more than me.
I am middle class and I travel to my job.
Bucking the trend
If there is one thing I have learned from traveling is that I hate traveling.
Traveling does suck
So I'm not the type to go schedule some vacation someplace far away
No place like home
I only learned few months back that avg finnish person travels 4 times a year to some place inside the country and 3 times abroad each year
and if that's like avg, some people travel a LOT
Yes, there is no place like Mr. Ball's home.
Funny
I've been abroad like 3 times on my whole life if we don't count boat trips to the countries next to us
and even with those, it would be like 10 times max
I wonder if people who speak English are more likely to travel abroad...
Every airline seems to use English on their flights.
Not necessarily English as a first language
I would say majority of adults on earth know some English
As an English teacher I would have to disagree.
But in almost every room you can find one person who speaks English.
Airport staff generally all speak a little bit of English.
I said know some English, not teacher level
English is required in lots of schools everywhere
A majority of the people I meet in China don't have any English ability beyond 'Hi'.
Including India
The younger generation is different.
But there are a lot of old people out there.
Old people make the best noodle soup.
Point is majority know some English
I don't think a majority, just from my travels.
Isn't it a little too much gristle?
I'm not sure about the morality either.
I prefer beef or pork stock.
Name a large country that doesn't have English language requirements in school
Poland
Why do so many polish folks know English then?
Lots of polish work in UK also correct?
Just because schools require it doesn't mean in practice that you can roll into a 7/11 and expect even basic level of English.
Like if you say the word 'two' because you want two beers not one, they generally won't understand.
Now we are talking levels
Some. Remember Tusk? He didn't knew English when he moved to UE job.
And that's in a place like Shenzhen which is super international. If I go into central China to a third tier city, next to nobody will have even basic English ability.
I figure if someone doesn't know one, two ,three, yes, no in English then that is not knowing any English.
India has many different languages, so a lot of times it is easier to do something in English than try to have 3 or 4 different languages for something like a videogame.
A guy I knew from India told me that it would be stupid to localize my videogame for India for that reason. He said just use English.
Because Indians know English
Of course they know, they are from America. Oh wait...
everyday or to foreign people?
Places like Hong Kong with major international business and political hubs are different than most places.
I agree
A lot of Chinese people who go to Hong Kong end up using English because their Chinese is so different they can't communicate in Chinese.
IK
Cantonese
The more poor people in Hong Kong generally can't communicate too well in English. But any higher up business people will speak English.
yes well thats why when you come to Australia you have to learn Australian π
I don't have the Spain lisp tho
Too many dialects. I worked for a guy from Hong Kong for a while and he was proud of how many dialects he spoke.
you get it even with English, theres some poms I can barely understand π
Guandong Hua.
Cantonese is a name made up by British colonizers.
Yeah the folks who they dealt with first were the ones who had their language translated to other languages
wasnt like Hong Kong and Signapore under British rule at some point?
Yes.
Macau was Portuguese. They gave the name 'Mandarin Chinese' to what is really Putong Hua.
I'm currently listening to China: A history
The Pearl River Delta is a patchwork of languages.
@north torrent what's the current politically correct term?
Shenzhen was built right in the middle of Guangzhou (Canton) and Hong Kong, who both speak Guangdong Hua.
But Shenzhen was filled with immigrants from northern China that spoke Putong Hua. Wasn't built until the 1990s, so it is currently the fastest growing city in the history of the world.
Then on the other side of the delta you have Macau which have a mix of both Chinese languages and Portuguese.
So can you say someone is speaking Chinese in general?
If you just say Chinese, it is assumed you mean Putong Hua.
Ok, because I don't want to sound like bigot
Now when it comes to written Chinese, China uses 'Simplified Characters' while Taiwan uses 'Traditional Characters' which just have some character with more complicated strokes.
I can understand using the term Cantonese for Hong Kong people.
Mandarin has no reason to be used ever, just say Chinese.
Got it, only use it for small oranges
But if you are referring to Cantonese inside mainland China, then Guangdong Chinese will be understood. Cantonese will just confuse a mainland Chinese person.
Thanks
There is a different term people use in Hong Kong as opposed to Guangdong Hua, but I can't for the life of me spell it... Or say it correctly...
Something like Ear Yuè but you have to say
Going to make coffee now.
'ear' like a dieing giraffe would say the word.
The Yuè part is correct, because that is the indigenous people of Southern China as opposed to the Han Chinese.
The language actually sounds closer to Vietnamese than Chinese to me... But if you say that to someone in Hong Kong they will probably try to fight you.
They get mad...
How long does it take to become good at a battle royale game?
About a fortnight π€£
Rimshot
so anyone doing learning groups with anyone during quarantine remotely ?
I have to teach school online.
Just toss your students youtube links and let them go. They are graduating this year anyway.
eh. i know its probably annoying. im just one of those that has to learn everything online because i cant afford schooling and so i try to find people that wish to study or learn together. not much luck but if you dont try even less will come. thx anyways π
@carmine frigate you had that there the itch web ? want to double check the empty infinity floor alike room you made there
clapsclaps
by tomorrow we surpass china virus cases
just by the small difference spain is under 50 million of people and china is about 1.5 billions
worldwide quarantine
powers are mostly consisted of 50+ age people
they are risk group
and afraid of covid19 so much
they might sacrifice world economy to survive
I've seen this hypothesis here and there
@median wraith ?
by tomorrow we surpass china virus cases
@median wraith china lies, it is simple
who knows how many cases are there
we are about lie too
doubtful
the hospitals start to don't count cases since this week
lie is a purpose
the people that don't test and have clear exposition wont count on the total
miscount is not lie
anyway, it does not matter how do you count - panic is already here
how easy its to control them all
so there is no reason to hide numbers
they just go too far with every idea
germany is like every other eropean country
them actually named it in the news
60k infected and less deaths than in the countries with 10k
plus someone spot they don't whole count then all but the convenient cases they want
because germans don't kiss each other during greetings
like italians
you have to account traditions
XD
yes, it is weird
I was surprised by discovering the fact italians kiss cheeks like in mafia movies
we kiss on the cheeks as well if its someone we somewhat know.
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here:

Italy is discouraging traditional greetings of kissing on the cheeks or shaking hands to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Authorities also advise people to stay at least a metre (3.3 feet) ap...
no mo though
we do too but as Luos said
From your last sentence it sound like we go a gamedev meet and we kiss all the people
well, I learn stuff from youtube and have no idea if it is true
just have to extrapolate my knowledge about "northern" and "southern" mentality
everything I know about italians, I learned from the simpsons
hahaa, not the worst source of knowledge to me
I mean some newspaper from UK named we fu** with donkeys
So I could expect anything
however, follow qualified quarantine recommendations
some newspaper
ah, there is a lot of fake newspapers
just seeking for hype
it is a big problem worldwide
journalism is dead
LOL that China number has to be bullshit
@median wraith UK newspapers have no respect here so I wouldn't worry about it. They try desperate measures to get people to buy them.
xd
Na the China one is real, they just have sci fi techs
Like the robots from 1992 they can drive with a tea across the corridor
well lets say it originated there, and it has a 2 week incubation period, there is no fucking way that is so low

Before we dive into all the technical stuff about how to set up the project and get animating, I want to take a few minutes and share some of the interesting tips and tricks that I found while ...
First time I see a proper animation for FPS
in a youtube video
America Wins another time
WTF is, Call of Duty, Duty Calls, Parody, Totalbiscuit, Totalhailbut, Cynicalbrit, People can fly, Bulletstorm, EA, WTF, is
China is playing the long game @fathom wadi
anybody else have the tendency to over-mod a game until it breaks?
@signal citrus my/gf's sims4 now runs 15-30-ish fps <_<
cpu seems to be the main bottleneck though
yea
even with the heaviest reshade setups it sticks around the same fps
<_< now I want a mod that puts one sim per thread
what is your utilization?
I should properly check hehe
i'm betting its 1/64th lol
lol π
btw
took a look at the new zenith II extreme alpha
they took off that weird 2x2 usb
it also does not come with a screw driver
@deep glen I over mod Sims 4 with corn mods there was no problem π€
ah yeah that makes sense
Got like 150 mods
1 thread rendering, 1 thread audio, 1 thread script, and 1 thread interaction likely
Mate has Skyrim VR fully modded around 400 mods
games back then were probably utilized for consoles like 360 which has 3 threads
ye that sweet sweet sims 4 modding lol
ye you could oc closer to 5 i'd bet
not something you want to do sustained
nah, id need better cooling for that
sims have any way of telling you which mod is taking the most performance out?
without mods you cant even tell, with it only tellsyou what is causing issues
but my guess is the 60 sims-on-lot mod :p
(along with the advanced ai mod)
especially if they are all set up to basically progress trough the game without any input
gf went as far as put all the children in their own house
think she is telling me something I rather ignore
XD
at least she didnt install a male preggo mod, because then we'd need some serious talk time
I have 5 and its frigging murder sometimes
technically its possible now
well yeah but then you need a trans mod
actually Sims4 allows to get preggo I think if you're male without mods
you can choose genitals per sex type
since last updates
somehow I broke UE4
Now I got AO and others inside Forward rendering
but are broken
Maybe you just did it wrong. I mean, you are new to this right?
if you're running a project from an external drive, never shutdown immediatley after closing a ue4 project
learned this the hard way today
Windows 10 should be pretty safe to unplug in that way. Depends though if its writing when you pull the plug
im on w7, wasn't an unplug but a shutdown, i think ue4 still does some file stuff in the background before completley shutting down
lost a map file n 3 days work up the pipe π
@hasty cargo ahh win7 still has the old system that doesn't ensure the data is safe. Thats one of the reasons Win7 is shit. Upgrade, you are slowing the internet down :p
π¦
the price i pay for a lightweight os
i had this nice shoreline done too, nice rock placement, sea foam
ill never get it right again
@fathom wadi idk what you're talking man, I just started my adventure in UE4 this week and targeting for a MMORPG thats the lobby of the character selector
π
Have you seen the Blueprint Communication Tutorial video yet? Best 2 hours you will ever spend next to hiring a hooker and getting a bag of finest columbian
have to check that later
watched today some videos from gamers that actually know what they are talking about
on youtube? impossible
yeah it was, somehow
Someohow this spot when enabled forward, on my engine changes but makes no sense at all
as there are the correct num of index π€
its an unbound property tho
probably not relevant for the other shading type
ie. forward rendering + screenspace AO = nope
@hasty cargo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sFrG02xpAw
In the last 10 or so years it feels like the quality of video games and especially Triple A titles has declined. But why? With advancements in technology, higher budgets, larger teams of developers, how could gaming as a product be getting worse?? Well, that's what I'm here to...
@fathom wadi yeah could be at first was checking for the inputs as there ix x2 as the normal but makes no sense seems correct, will disable the AO and that will be all
half life alyx is so good tho
wasn't expecting it to be a testament to how to keep a franchise going
does half life alyx have SSAO ?
it has some kind of adaptive ao
when things move they lose their ao and it gets updated later on
yeah it seems like there is some soft shadow or ssao going on
Hello guys, i'm new here
the game is incredibly pretty
@twin gulch waves
π
it has blob shadows
as in shader trickery blob shadows
and i think forward-only SSAO
temporally accumulated
and btw, you can do forward only ssao, even unreal can do that now
cool. its been a while since I updated my VR resume tbh
oh okay
are you guys professional programmers or just hobbyist?
It works with forward rendering, but only if you use TAA, not if you use MSAA. Being able to use MSAA is the main reason for forward rendering though. And then SSAO does not work, since the UE4 SSAO has no blur pass, it completely relies on TAA.
@twin gulch depends. If thats based on money earned, im a frigging noob. If not, im a pro
i see π
any tips for a beginner? I programmed basic stuff until now (not game related)
Yeah. Become a plumber. Then you get paid for cleaning up shit.
i worked on construction sites, if that counts
seriously though, just study, study, study. Focus on a specialisation, but keep adding to your skill set
understood, thanks man
:))
me too. Now I've been cleaning my own crap up and not paying myself. Im the worst boss
quick question for you guys, is c++ used a lot in developing? or it depends on the project?
c++ is great for many things
yes
when I see a blueprint only project, I see unoptimised logic made by someone who was too scared to goto C++ :p
I see blueprints compiling to native in no time
@median wraith does this guy mention any opposing thoughts, like the scope of projects or something
