That and getting any type of take out at 3am

fathom wadi
#

if I had more money than I needed to live, I would only waste it on game dev.

tough sierra
#

I don't like the quality of a lot of plugins in the marketplace, but i'm picky about scale and optimizations.

north torrent
#

I've spent too much of my life having to choose between... Do I want a coat to keep me warm, or do I want to eat this week...

Or worrying if my bank card will be declined when I try to buy something.

Being in the US and living paycheck to paycheck sucks. If I never moved to China, I would be very worried about the maga-virus right now, because I never had any savings.

I would be very worried about how I'm going to pay for food and rent.

tough sierra
#

Can relate there somewhat.

#

Was bad enough I couldn't afford to spend more than 58 USD on food a month.

fathom wadi
#

I did that once with some family friends in Spain @plucky pagoda . The drinks in the UK are watered down, so when I hit some cheap spirits that weren't, I ended up on a 9/11 rant about the new world order and almost choked to death on my own puke, ruining their guest duvet and puking in the shower.

tough sierra
#

Family helped out a bit at least, and I learned how to cook from scratch.

primal spoke
#

You were living check to check in US?

#

California?

north torrent
#

I'm from Arizona.

tough sierra
#

Oof.

#

My excuse was just that i'm currently supporting someone through college.

primal spoke
#

Arizona? I thought they have a good economy?

tough sierra
#

I think it has mixed results.

plucky pagoda
#

I was stupid in my twenties.

fathom wadi
#

me too. self-destructive to the max

north torrent
#

I made decent money, but I had to pay a lot on my school loans and other things.

primal spoke
#

My twenties were fine but my teens though... massive mistakes.

tough sierra
#

Schooling here can really fuck you up for life >.<

primal spoke
#

It depends

tough sierra
#

It does for sure, you have to know what to do.

primal spoke
#

Where you go

#

Lots of folks take remedial classes at expensive universities

north torrent
#

Your paycheck can disappear pretty quickly when they take out $400 for school loans, $400 for health insurance, $250 for car loan, $100 for insurance on said car, $800 for rent.

I only really struggled when I was younger, but even when I got past that point I was never able to make any true headway in having a large savings account.

primal spoke
#

The tuition of where I recieved a master's was over $50K per year

#

800 for rent is low.

plucky pagoda
#

Isn't there a starter project that has point and click to move units?

tough sierra
#

That much for health insurance?

fathom wadi
#

seems ass backwards to me. We should train those who can handle a masters for free.

north torrent
#

I don't live fancy, I'm a teacher.

tough sierra
#

Jesus I don't want to get off the gov check now.

primal spoke
#

400 health? That is a good plan or very little employer contribution

plucky pagoda
#

Marc, I'm going to have to do something for you. I've been racking my brain for days trying to decide to what to work on and this is perfect.

north torrent
#

I could certainly live off the money I made as a teacher in the United States.

I could slowly save money and in several years have a safety net saved back in the bank.

But I didn't see any future where I would ever have enough money to buy a home or afford to have a family, so I decided to take my chances with going somewhere else.

#

Didn't work out well at all for me the first year I was in China, but over time I found better opportunities, and I am pretty happy with the money I am making now.

primal spoke
#

Thats awesome. Im glad you're ballin now

fathom wadi
#

If you make a million from it, just dont spend it all on gamedev. πŸ˜„

plucky pagoda
#

yeah no worries there.

#

I'm a numbers and finance guy. I've already planned out how to invest a million to get 200k a year to live on for the rest of my life.

fathom wadi
#

I can also make a million last for the rest of my life but I live another 5 years and spend 200k a year on coke and hookers :p

primal spoke
#

@plucky pagoda how?

plucky pagoda
#

I can see that.

#

Stock options mostly. Cash covered puts and calls and a few other things.

fathom wadi
#

I call it my "Chris Farley Investment Programme"

north torrent
#

Before I went to China I was still using an i7-920 first generation and a GTX-750ti.

I never had the extra money to upgrade my rig, so it was 8 years old at the time, with a few changes to it.

But now I can buy the computer parts that I need to make the game I really want.

I could go buy an RTX 2080ti right now if I wanted to, but I am not going to be that trigger happy with my spending. I still have to think about long term savings.

When a 2070 does the job for a much better price, I will just stick with that for now. Hell of a lot better than an 750ti.

primal spoke
#

πŸ’°

#

Mao

#

Money bags mao

#

It took me several months to pay for my 2080TI

plucky pagoda
#

When my dad died I got 20k from his IRA that I split with my brother and turned it into 100k. But we needed a lot of money then and eventually I couldn't make it fast enough to keep the account with a big enough balance.

primal spoke
#

Amazon recurring payment 0 interest

#

Technically cheaper on the last payment

#

Because inflation

north torrent
#

I've been saving money into my computer fund for over a year, Mr. Ball126. I just don't want to spend it all at once.

primal spoke
#

Don't

#

You can get stuff on recurring payment

fathom wadi
#

I have nothing but my balls and my word, and I don't break them for nobody.

north torrent
#

With the raise in pay I got after being fired, that money can go into my savings fund as well.

Maybe half into my game dev budget and half into my personal savings budget (which is much higher than the game dev budget).

primal spoke
#

That's awesome you have a game dev budget tho

#

I need to set one, I get on buying streaks sometimes

#

And Im like, I didn't save any money in a while.

north torrent
#

That's the money for computer parts, software like Zbrush and Substance, buying musical instrument libraries for my game music, buying assets like animations, and stuff like that.

#

I went a little bit over my music budget. I still have $300 left in my computer parts budget.

broken sigil
#

Upgrading my PC when I was starting out with game development and had no money was the best investment I probably ever made, my pc at the time could barely run an empty ue4 project.
Probably if I didn't upgrade my PC then I wouldn't be where I am today since I wouldn't have anything to learn and work on

#

kinda weird to think about

primal spoke
#

@broken sigil where are you today?

north torrent
#

I always liked the idea of investing in myself, Mr. Man.

primal spoke
#

Gold watches don't count mao

plucky pagoda
#

It's kinda weird that the turn based strategy still uses a spring arm

fathom wadi
#

I was using an old Radeon 8xxx card when UE4 launched. It was years old at that point. However I lucked out and won Β£1500 so I spent it on a brand new PC and got work on a VR game. Without that, Im not sure I would be here now.

broken sigil
#

Got a good paying job I always wanted and love πŸ™‚ @primal spoke

north torrent
#

Buying my i7-920 rig back in the day put me in a financial bind, but without that rig I wouldn't know half the stuff I know now.

By the time I built my new rig though, I wasn't crunched for money.

primal spoke
#

In game dev?

broken sigil
#

yeah

primal spoke
#

πŸ‘

#

You hear that mao

#

Buy it now!

north torrent
#

Buy stock in Mr. Man?

plucky pagoda
#

I've been lucky that my wife was okay with me not making money for a year or two and spending a bunch on a new computer.

north torrent
#

Are you publicly traded?

primal spoke
#

@plucky pagoda yes you are

plucky pagoda
#

The best thing anyone trying to work on their own can have in the US is a spouse with health insurance

primal spoke
#

Are you publicly traded?
@north torrent πŸ˜†

north torrent
#

No. I am not.

#

I was going to buy stock in Mr. Blue Man.

primal spoke
#

You should buy the 2080TI

#

64GB ram

#

And new CPU

#

IDK which?

#

Health insurance in the US shouldn't even be a thing

plucky pagoda
#

It would be a huge boon to small biz if it wasn't tied to employment

broken sigil
#

I was going to buy stock in Mr. Blue Man.
That would be a bad investment πŸ˜›

north torrent
#

I think there is a happy medium between being too cheap to invest in myself, and just buying things to show off...

I think an RTX 2070 and 32gb of ram is just fine for the moment.

I'll buy an RTX 3080ti, a Ryzen 4950x, and 128gb of ram as a reward to myself when I finish my game.

Then I will make a second game with that.

primal spoke
#

128GB ram?

plucky pagoda
#

It'd be nice if there was a button you could push and it added events for all the inputs you've setup in project settings to the controller

primal spoke
#

You rendering 4K physics sims? While watching YouTube?

pearl elk
#

1.21 Terabytes

north torrent
#

128, Why not?

Wouldn't fit my ITX motherboard though.

primal spoke
#

Maybe your money could be better spent elsewhere

pearl elk
#

yes like buying me 128GB of ram

primal spoke
#

Like a better case or MOBO?

tough sierra
#

There's xeon cpus that really kick ass for 40$

#

6 or 8 core.

north torrent
#

My current case is a small form factor micro-atx case, so I plan on buying a totally new case and motherboard.

primal spoke
#

So use that 128 GB money on that

#

64gb is fine

tough sierra
#

If you shop budget parts you can spend about 500$ on a rig with good enough hardware to last you half a decade or more.

primal spoke
#

But it may not be in like 5 years.

#

@tough sierra nah

tough sierra
#

Absolutely.

north torrent
#

I am not actually planning out my next rig at the moment, as I don't know what next years products will be.

The point was, I will upgrade when I finish a game or two and have earned top notch stuff.

Until then I will stick with the more than competent 2070.

primal spoke
#

If you're running godot

pearl elk
#

RTX 3090ti extra OCX mega super

primal spoke
#

Not UE4

tough sierra
#

If your not using ue4 cpu isn't even that important though that's the easiest to find budget parts for.

broken sigil
#

there are some rumors about ddr5 ram releasing in 2021

tough sierra
#

This shitty cpu can do ue4 projects, but working in c++ is what killed my productivity actually.

#

Opening the friggin game to test right after compilation is what i want.

#

Not to open the level editor.

north torrent
#

There are people outside...

tough sierra
#

Ooo a bullet train.

primal spoke
#

PC build under $500 running UE4 5 years from now would choke and die.

north torrent
#

That's just the Subway.

#

Depending on the kind of game.

tough sierra
#

You can get an 8 core for like 40 it's really possible.

#

The gpu I found was 120 at the time but really I could have done a lot better.

primal spoke
#

Ummm, not buying a $40 CPU

tough sierra
#

It kicks ass compared to the 8 core black vishera amd cpu I got.

primal spoke
#

Not to sound snobbish, unless its from a friend or something

tough sierra
#

Already had it's rating checked.

#

There's places you can go to to get a list of cpu performance data, yo ucan compare all that and look for lower prices for the rating.

#

The black vishera cpu i got was 90 at the time I believe which still isn't horrible.

primal spoke
#

You what they say about when it sounds too good to be true

tough sierra
#

Higher end of the ddr3 generation.

broken sigil
#

when I was starting out I had an old 2 core athlon I believe lol

primal spoke
#

How'd that work out for you

broken sigil
#

It didn't πŸ˜‚

primal spoke
#

You better not build lighting..... ever!

tough sierra
#

He could run factorio perfectly fine for sure πŸ˜›

#

God that game is amazing single thread performance wise.

primal spoke
#

The enginee game is heavier than the package

#

He would be able to run factorio development

tough sierra
#

But seriously on that note i've seen people spend over 1k for a cpu that doesn't even do as well as mine.

primal spoke
#

I believe it

tough sierra
#

Though theirs was ddr4 comatible

primal spoke
#

But still would never buy a $40 CPU unless had no other choice.

north torrent
#

There are even more people outside now...

tough sierra
#

A lot of server cpus though are getting super cheap with how ddr4 is becoming mainstream, now is the time to buy into them.

pearl elk
#

people arnt allowed outside

north torrent
#

Looks like they are here.

primal spoke
#

ddr4 been out for a minute

pearl elk
#

choose your fighter

broken sigil
#

here if they catch you outside it's a $4k fine, only 1 person per family is allowed to go out for food

primal spoke
#

mao you in Wuhan?

tough sierra
#

Doesn't look that big an improvement at least compared to the ddr2 -> ddr3 difference.

north torrent
#

I think there is a certain point in your development career where the time spent on slow computers is more costly than just buying a $2,000 rig.

signal citrus
#

Does that fine let you stay out the rest of the day at least?

tough sierra
#

Damn good question.

north torrent
#

People, Mr. Olympus, people...

broken sigil
#

nope, you get put into quarantine without choice

primal spoke
#

Go outside mao

#

See what's up

north torrent
#

Shanghai is opening back up.

I can't leave for 5 more days though, because I came in from outside China.

broken sigil
#

it's either stay home in self isolation and or pay 4k and get put in quarantine

pearl elk
#

are you sure theyre real people and not just figments of your imagination because youve got cabin fever

broken sigil
#

^^

pearl elk
#

cuz I literally see no one in this photo πŸ™‚

signal citrus
#

Got the ultra wide?

north torrent
#

Well, they also quarantine people from infected provinces.

So if the US was doing this, then people from New York that travel to Minnesota would have to be in mandatory (beat you with a stick if you leave) quarantine for 14 days.

tough sierra
#
At their lowest point, the Xeon E5-2670 was selling for as little as $70. PC enthusiasts following the secondhand market were snapping them up in disbelief over the price.
north torrent
#

Not at home, but in a government chosen hotel run by hazmat dudes.

signal citrus
#

They let you vpn?

north torrent
#

Minnesota needs to quarantine people, that's my point.

pearl elk
#

did you just assume hazmat persons gender

tough sierra
#

Those cpus used to be over 1k by the way.

signal citrus
#

We’re under lockdown Mao

north torrent
#

VPN is not something you ask for permission on. You just do it.

signal citrus
#

Two weeks since 11:59 yesterday

north torrent
#

So you don't let people from New York in?

signal citrus
#

House arrest

#

Idk about that

north torrent
#

That's the key.

primal spoke
#

An ankle bracelet thermometer?

signal citrus
#

But 35 dollars for a plane ticket

north torrent
#

Keep New Yorkers out.

pearl elk
broken sigil
#

you know what would be even worse... If all people that got infected turn into zombies after 2 months

tough sierra
#

Xeons look the way to go when buying budget cpu's, they do relatively alright comapred to new ones, worse sure but not a lot so, even for 70$ that's a hell of a good deal. You can get budget gpu's as well to save you a ton of money, what you mostly want is at least 4GB vram, the processing umph usually doesn't matter especially if your a game dev, as you want to support lower end hardware.

north torrent
#

I still need to go back to Shenzhen to get my ultra-wide... Hopefully next weekend...

pearl elk
#

ultra-wide SCSI

north torrent
#

Just waiting for them to open my old school.

primal spoke

Ultra wide Scuzzy

signal citrus
#

It’s really not a bad time to migrate out of mn

north torrent

I'm putting rice with my stew today.

primal spoke
#

Mao turned into chef Boyardee over there

north torrent
#

I think China just shut down the border, so you can't come here, Mr. Soulless Pat.

primal spoke
#

When you gonna stream the cooking show?

north torrent
#

They also don't allow phones with buttons here, because the button carries the virus.

tough sierra
#

You can get such a gpu for less than 110$ for sure, i'll go with that number as a high estimate, so 90+110+60(mobo)+60(ram)+70(psu)+30(case)=420

#

Yes you for sure can go under 500

#

Actually ram might be 80 since you need 16GB these days.

signal citrus
#

I want to move to one of those secluded country areas with the new internet infrastructure

north torrent
#

Do it!

#

Protect your computer from the virus.

primal spoke
#

@signal citrusoh? Not a subdivision controlled by a monopoly?

signal citrus
#

No, I mean forest type areas

#

I’m already living in suburbia

tough sierra
#

Spectrum is outrageously expensive and they own a lot of the US internet >.<

primal spoke
#

You have options for ISP?

tough sierra
#

It's them or another isp that charges maybe 5$ less for flipping dsl and horrible customer support.

#

That and they had an issue where I couldn't port forward.

#

They refused to look into it much deeper.

primal spoke
#

My down is 25Mbs

#

Max

signal citrus
#

My upstream surpasses my downstream for the first time ever

tough sierra
#

But it's only those two isps here.

primal spoke
#

No options

tough sierra
#

For the most part spectrum owns everything, and they raised prices since solidifying their hold.

primal spoke
#

Dude I would live spectrum speeds

#

Love

tough sierra
#

Max this hardware downloads is about 10 MB/s anyway. But I wouldn't mind that being cut in half.

#

I'd be happy for less than half for paying 5 less.

primal spoke
#

Ok I said 25Mbs

#

Little b not B

tough sierra
#

I know.

primal spoke
#

Bits not bytes

tough sierra
#

I'd still take that for 45$ a month.

#

Instead of 60 a month.

pearl elk
tough sierra
#

But then again I was poor for a long while.

#

Still am now that the job put me on a two week vacation >.>

primal spoke
#

Paid?

tough sierra
#

Probably not i'd assume but it's my first job.

#

At a pizza hut, I doubt they'll pay.

#

That and I do less than part time to hold onto the gov check.

signal citrus
#

You feeling any better mons?

pearl elk

I thought pizza places were hiring lots of people

north torrent
tough sierra

It's a food business.

#

They don't want to risk contamination and I had a minor cold.

primal spoke
#

Oh

#

Mao I expect better presentation

tough sierra
#

They want people but a lot of people either called off or called sick, and their rule is to keep them off work for two weeks.

north torrent
#

I'm in a hotel...

primal spoke
#

Look at the splash at the top

#

Wipe that off next time.

tough sierra
#

Lol that track.

north torrent
#

Never!

tough sierra
#

Hey i eat at my desk to wow.

north torrent
#

Life is full of splashes. I will never take the life out of my soup!

#

I've been eating at my desk for years. Never had room for a kitchen table.

primal spoke
#

You have a rice cooker?

tough sierra
#

Same.

north torrent
#

The rice was delivered to me.

tough sierra
#

I do o/ It's awesome.

#

Seriously they are so versatile.

#

And nothing tastes as good to me as a properly made vegie rice meal.

north torrent
#

This is what I have.

tough sierra
#

Ooo custom temp settings.

primal spoke
#

@tough sierra you vegan?

tough sierra
#

Or is that a timer.

#

I was for a while, i just usually avoid meat as it's very expensive.

north torrent
#

I bought the model without a timer.

primal spoke
#

Challenges working at the hut?

tough sierra
#

Actually since working there my meat intake went up a lot, they throw out so much food I can't help but take it home.

#

Honestly their stuff is good >.<

primal spoke
#

Dang

north torrent
#

Have you ever had Chinese Pizza Hut, Mr. Koi?

tough sierra
#

Not had the chance.

north torrent
#

Well, you can't come here now, they shut down the border...

primal spoke
#

I just ate some Frosted Mini Wheats

signal citrus
#

How does Pizza Hut get the crust so greasy?

primal spoke
#

It has crushed animal bones in it.

#

For no apparent reason

north torrent
#

Grease.

signal citrus
#

An answer, thank you

#

It seems more involved though

tough sierra
#

Bread, rice, cashews, carrets, flax seeds, beans, some spices, grind all that up and you have vegan meat, or similar mixes can do the trick.

#

And my god.

#

It tastes just like geta.

#

Oh.

north torrent
#

Sounds more expensive than meat though...

primal spoke
#

Pop tarts have crushed animal bones in them also

north torrent
#

Have you seen the price of cashews?

tough sierra
#

We geese the pans before actually putting the dough on them, and they proof like that.

#

It's actually a lot cheaper.

#

A ton so

signal citrus
#

I thought it was something like that

tough sierra
#

You don't need much cashews, most of it's rice/bread, and at least here vegies are super cheap.

tough sierra
#

That and i make my own bread.

signal citrus
#

Not a fan of Pizza Hut, hard to forget that greasy bread

north torrent
#

Best typo of the day, Mr. Koi.

primal spoke
#

Geese the pan

tough sierra
#

Understandable, also it depends how much the pans are greased, you'd be amazed how many mistakes we all make there.

#

And it's understandable ones, there's a lot to keep track of.

primal spoke
#

You're not sick of pizza yet?

tough sierra
#

Hell no I love bread stuffs ^-^

north torrent
#

I like Pizza Hut.

primal spoke
#

Have you started trading goods with other local restaurants

tough sierra
#

And there's so much variety, lemon pepper fries and jalapeno pepper poppers and chicken.

primal spoke
#

Like a pizza for tacos

tough sierra
#

Older sibling trades lunch sometimes but I don't socialize that much.

north torrent
#

I like tacos.

tough sierra
#

Lol funny you said tacos >.<

primal spoke
#

Tacos in China?

tough sierra
#

It's usually taco bell he visits.

#

Woah tacos in china?

north torrent
#

There is one Taco Bell in Shanghai.

primal spoke
#

Taco bell doesn't count

#

You know that

north torrent
#

I am from Arizona.

tough sierra
#

Home made tacos... I miss that.

signal citrus
#

I made tacos recently

primal spoke
#

Arizona used to be a part of Mexico

tough sierra
#

On a related note spuds sell super cheap here, they make awesome fries, chips, and other stuffs ^-^

north torrent
#

In China, Taco Bell is marketed as 'Authentic California Food'.

primal spoke
#

Lol!

tough sierra
#

LOL

north torrent
#

They are not allowed to mention Mexico anywhere.

primal spoke
#

It is though

#

It was created in California

#

But it's weird calling it authentic

north torrent
#

Marketing calls everything authentic.

primal spoke
#

So you can't get a good taco in China, check.

north torrent
#

I know some places in Shenzhen to get real tacos.

tough sierra
#

Define good?

#

Your making me hungry...

north torrent
#

I have only been in quarantine in Shanghai, so I haven't been able to go out and look here.

primal spoke
#

A good taco is hand made tortillas

north torrent
#

But there is a huge immigrant town here in Shanghai.

primal spoke
#

With fresh ingredients

#

Often with Spanish names

tough sierra
#

Taco bell has dank ideas but yeah not the freshest food at least here >.<

primal spoke
#

Salsa, guacamole, carne asada

tough sierra
#

Ooo~

primal spoke
#

Pico

#

Chipotle in China?

#

That's kind of close

tough sierra
#

That spice, I swear I can't taste it.

#

But it makes the nose super runny.

north torrent
#

There is a place in Shanghai called Lǎowài Street, where it is almost 100% foreigners living there. You can get all sorts of foreign food.

primal spoke
#

Chipotle called foreign?

north torrent
#

No, that isn't a thing in China.

primal spoke
#

It's like MCD being called foreign

north torrent
#

But immigrants from Mexico living in Shanghai would want to sell their tacos on Laowai Street.

signal citrus
primal spoke
#

Mexicans live in Shanghai?

signal citrus
#

Home made pico de galo

primal spoke
#

You've seen them?

north torrent
#

There are some in Shenzhen.

I am new to Shanghai, I haven't left quarantine.

tough sierra
#

I don't know what that is but I want some.

north torrent
#

I don't think the hazmat guy is Mexican, but I could be wrong.

primal spoke
#

Ask him if he habla espanol

north torrent
#

These two cities are super international. You can always find a German restaurant run by Germans and an Italian restaurant run by Italians and a Canadian restaurant run by Canadians.

signal citrus

Poutine

primal spoke

Eww a Canadian restaurant?

Pancakes with syrup?

#

What?

north torrent

I had poutine for the first time in China...

primal spoke
#

Schnitzel is really good.

north torrent
#

German beer is very common here.

primal spoke
#

German beer is also good.

north torrent

Germany and Australia seem to have the best trade deals with China, at least when it comes to things I see at the grocery store.

primal spoke
#

No Budweiser? Lol

#

Piss beer

north torrent
#

Have you ever heard of 'Point Roberts', Mr. Soulless Pat?

#

Budweiser is the only US brand of beer you can find, but I never drink it. Why would I when imported German beer is almost the same price?

#

My family has skills in car mechanics and construction though, so ma had rather big trucks, not "fat" body frames but actually big interiors and such for hauling lumber and such.

So it is sort of like a convertible, but sort of like just sitting in the back of a truck....

signal citrus

Was that the car that flipped over a lot?

I might be thinking of the geo tracker

It’s part of the stimulus right?

It is part of Senate bill that just got passed.

It is basically for independent contractors and small businesses to survive the maga-virus quarantine.

It is a loan that doesn't have to be repaid... so basically a grant, but called a loan.

molten granite
#

Just arrived to the Unreal slack server, and I need some guidance which channel or subgroup I need to pose a question about adding a volume B-spline capability to the geometry engine of Unreal. The context is that next generation FEM unifies geometry and the shape functions making it much easier for the simulation to modify the geometry and model accurate model interactions, such as fluid-structure interactions and deformation. We have that new FEM engine but our geometry modeler is not integrated into an animation environment and thus blocks us from doing animations that explain either the physics or the optimization that is going on underneath. We are exploring if an integration with Unreal can deliver such high-fidelity animations of complex physics.

abstract haven
#

do you want to render geometry output from an existing FEM engine?

#

you can ask in the cpp/graphics channels

molten granite
#

The need is a volume B-spline push-pull modeler integrated into an animation package so that we can generate visualizations of the iso-geometric analysis process. Traditional FEM separates geometry from analysis causing a break in the automatic geometry modification process that optimization needs to go through as you would need to remesh the new geometry.

abstract haven
#

not really sure with that terminology, but there is a spline component in the engine, if you want to generate meshes using splines (such as BREP), that isnt a tool and you would need to add your own module

#

do yo umean something like a subdivision surface modeller?

pastel tiger

you cant just use a curve?

#

Now of all times you should know this.

But yeah that too.

pastel tiger
#

@pearl elk no

plucky pagoda
#

There's a ton of free web apps that will plot functions for free. You should be able to find an equation that will work rather quickly. But you can use a curve fairly easy too.

#

@molten granite I suspect if you can talk to the people who are more familiar with the engine and have more in-depth knowledge of the source that you will find you can do as you are wanting. There's a few people who watch the cpp channel who I think would be of more help.

#

There's functionality available that should aid the process quite a bit.

#

I've done a very small amount of mesh manipulation in UE and will gladly point you towards anything I can, but I suspect my depth of knowledge in that area may be insufficient.

The Chinese system of government and obsession with 'saving face' made the leaders in Wuhan afraid to go public with the virus, as it would ruin their entire careers. That caused things to get out of hand before the federal government was ever aware.

I would say majority of adults on earth know some English

Just because schools require it doesn't mean in practice that you can roll into a 7/11 and expect even basic level of English.

Like if you say the word 'two' because you want two beers not one, they generally won't understand.

primal spoke
#

Now we are talking levels

zinc matrix
#

Some. Remember Tusk? He didn't knew English when he moved to UE job.

And that's in a place like Shenzhen which is super international. If I go into central China to a third tier city, next to nobody will have even basic English ability.

Yeah I used India as a example to offset China

#

Population wise

north torrent
#

I figure if someone doesn't know one, two ,three, yes, no in English then that is not knowing any English.

#

India has many different languages, so a lot of times it is easier to do something in English than try to have 3 or 4 different languages for something like a videogame.

#

A guy I knew from India told me that it would be stupid to localize my videogame for India for that reason. He said just use English.

Macau was Portuguese. They gave the name 'Mandarin Chinese' to what is really Putong Hua.

The Pearl River Delta is a patchwork of languages.

primal spoke
#

@north torrent what's the current politically correct term?

north torrent

Shenzhen was built right in the middle of Guangzhou (Canton) and Hong Kong, who both speak Guangdong Hua.

But Shenzhen was filled with immigrants from northern China that spoke Putong Hua. Wasn't built until the 1990s, so it is currently the fastest growing city in the history of the world.

Then on the other side of the delta you have Macau which have a mix of both Chinese languages and Portuguese.

primal spoke
#

Is it Chinese, or Mandarin, or Mandarin Chinese?

#

For language

north torrent
#

Putong Hua or just Standard Chinese.

It literally means 'The Standard Speak'.

primal spoke

So can you say someone is speaking Chinese in general?

If you just say Chinese, it is assumed you mean Putong Hua.

Mandarin has no reason to be used ever, just say Chinese.

primal spoke
#

Got it, only use it for small oranges

north torrent
#

But if you are referring to Cantonese inside mainland China, then Guangdong Chinese will be understood. Cantonese will just confuse a mainland Chinese person.

primal spoke
#

Thanks

north torrent
#

There is a different term people use in Hong Kong as opposed to Guangdong Hua, but I can't for the life of me spell it... Or say it correctly...

#

Something like Ear Yuè but you have to say

primal spoke
#

Going to make coffee now.

north torrent
#

'ear' like a dieing giraffe would say the word.

#

The Yuè part is correct, because that is the indigenous people of Southern China as opposed to the Han Chinese.

The language actually sounds closer to Vietnamese than Chinese to me... But if you say that to someone in Hong Kong they will probably try to fight you.

They get mad...

by tomorrow we surpass china virus cases

just by the small difference spain is under 50 million of people and china is about 1.5 billions

worldwide quarantine

#

powers are mostly consisted of 50+ age people

#

they are risk group

#

and afraid of covid19 so much

#

they might sacrifice world economy to survive

#

I've seen this hypothesis here and there

carmine frigate
#

@median wraith ?

mild root
#

by tomorrow we surpass china virus cases
@median wraith china lies, it is simple

#

who knows how many cases are there

median wraith
#

we are about lie too

mild root
#

doubtful

median wraith
#

the hospitals start to don't count cases since this week

mild root
#

lie is a purpose

median wraith
#

the people that don't test and have clear exposition wont count on the total

mild root
#

miscount is not lie

#

anyway, it does not matter how do you count - panic is already here

median wraith
#

how easy its to control them all

mild root
#

so there is no reason to hide numbers

median wraith
#

Germany lies too

#

is easy to see the absurd datacount

mild root
#

doubtful

#

germans don't lie

#

even in ww2 they documented all their crimes

median wraith

XD

#

or in germany are superman alike people

#

thats an option

mild root
#

they just go too far with every idea

#

germany is like every other eropean country

median wraith
#

na they don't count every case

#

total deaths is the last number before red

mild root
#

how did you come with such conclusion?

#

I'm really curious

median wraith
#

them actually named it in the news

#

60k infected and less deaths than in the countries with 10k

#

plus someone spot they don't whole count then all but the convenient cases they want

mild root
#

because germans don't kiss each other during greetings

#

like italians

#

you have to account traditions

median wraith

XD

mild root

yes, it is weird

median wraith

We only kiss close people

like family members etc

mild root

I was surprised by discovering the fact italians kiss cheeks like in mafia movies

we kiss on the cheeks as well if its someone we somewhat know.

anybody else have the tendency to over-mod a game until it breaks?

@signal citrus my/gf's sims4 now runs 15-30-ish fps <_<

#

cpu seems to be the main bottleneck though

signal citrus
#

lol

#

on your 3970x?

deep glen
#

yea

#

even with the heaviest reshade setups it sticks around the same fps

#

<_< now I want a mod that puts one sim per thread

signal citrus
#

what is your utilization?

deep glen
#

I should properly check hehe

signal citrus

i'm betting its 1/64th lol

lets load it again

it is flooding ram though hehe

hmm, seems its using only 4 threads

signal citrus

it also does not come with a screw driver

median wraith
#

@deep glen I over mod Sims 4 with corn mods there was no problem πŸ€–

signal citrus
#

ah yeah that makes sense

median wraith
#

Got like 150 mods

signal citrus
#

1 thread rendering, 1 thread audio, 1 thread script, and 1 thread interaction likely

#

Mate has Skyrim VR fully modded around 400 mods

signal citrus
#

games back then were probably utilized for consoles like 360 which has 3 threads

signal citrus

ye

#

what kind of psu do you have?

deep glen
#

for sims4? XD

#

1200watt platinum iirc

signal citrus

ye that sweet sweet sims 4 modding lol

#

ye you could oc closer to 5 i'd bet

#

not something you want to do sustained

deep glen
#

nah, id need better cooling for that

signal citrus
#

sims have any way of telling you which mod is taking the most performance out?

deep glen
#

without mods you cant even tell, with it only tellsyou what is causing issues

#

but my guess is the 60 sims-on-lot mod :p

#

(along with the advanced ai mod)

signal citrus
#

πŸ˜‚

#

60 sims is many sims

deep glen
#

especially if they are all set up to basically progress trough the game without any input

#

median wraith

male preggo why not

XD

fathom wadi
#

technically its possible now

median wraith
#

well yeah but then you need a trans mod

#

actually Sims4 allows to get preggo I think if you're male without mods

#

you can choose genitals per sex type

#

since last updates

#

somehow I broke UE4

#

Now I got AO and others inside Forward rendering

#

but are broken

fathom wadi
#

Maybe you just did it wrong. I mean, you are new to this right?

hasty cargo
#

if you're running a project from an external drive, never shutdown immediatley after closing a ue4 project

#

learned this the hard way today

fathom wadi
#

Windows 10 should be pretty safe to unplug in that way. Depends though if its writing when you pull the plug

hasty cargo
#

im on w7, wasn't an unplug but a shutdown, i think ue4 still does some file stuff in the background before completley shutting down

#

lost a map file n 3 days work up the pipe πŸ˜†

median wraith
#

question

#

for mobile on UE4 you use forward or normal deferred ?

hasty cargo
#

im guessing normal

#

think forward was just for vr

fathom wadi
#

@hasty cargo ahh win7 still has the old system that doesn't ensure the data is safe. Thats one of the reasons Win7 is shit. Upgrade, you are slowing the internet down :p

median wraith

yeah it was, somehow

#

Someohow this spot when enabled forward, on my engine changes but makes no sense at all

#

as there are the correct num of index πŸ€”

fathom wadi
#

its an unbound property tho

#

probably not relevant for the other shading type

#

ie. forward rendering + screenspace AO = nope

median wraith
#

@fathom wadi yeah could be at first was checking for the inputs as there ix x2 as the normal but makes no sense seems correct, will disable the AO and that will be all

signal citrus
#

half life alyx is so good tho

#

wasn't expecting it to be a testament to how to keep a franchise going

median wraith
#

does half life alyx have SSAO ?

fathom wadi
#

no

#

VR + screenspace = nope

signal citrus
#

it has some kind of adaptive ao

#

when things move they lose their ao and it gets updated later on

median wraith
#

the hell

#

the skulls have a secondary shadow inside the shadow

signal citrus

its definitely source enginey'

but its like a really refined source enginey' lol

median wraith

yeah it seems like there is some soft shadow or ssao going on

#

Hello guys, i'm new here

median wraith

reminds me of the soft shadows from DFAO

indirect ones

signal citrus

the game is incredibly pretty

fathom wadi

@twin gulch waves

twin gulch
#

πŸ˜ƒ

fringe sundial
#

it has blob shadows

#

as in shader trickery blob shadows

#

and i think forward-only SSAO

#

temporally accumulated

#

and btw, you can do forward only ssao, even unreal can do that now

fathom wadi
#

cool. its been a while since I updated my VR resume tbh

median wraith
#

how ? @fringe sundial

#

Im getting this error

fringe sundial
#

unreal has forward ssao since 4.24 i think

#

but i havent tried it

median wraith
#

oh okay

twin gulch
#

are you guys professional programmers or just hobbyist?

fathom wadi
#

It works with forward rendering, but only if you use TAA, not if you use MSAA. Being able to use MSAA is the main reason for forward rendering though. And then SSAO does not work, since the UE4 SSAO has no blur pass, it completely relies on TAA.

#

@twin gulch depends. If thats based on money earned, im a frigging noob. If not, im a pro

twin gulch
#

i see πŸ˜„

#

any tips for a beginner? I programmed basic stuff until now (not game related)

fathom wadi
#

Yeah. Become a plumber. Then you get paid for cleaning up shit.

#

quick question for you guys, is c++ used a lot in developing? or it depends on the project?

signal citrus

c++ is great for many things

yes

#

when I see a blueprint only project, I see unoptimised logic made by someone who was too scared to goto C++ :p

signal citrus

I see blueprints compiling to native in no time

@median wraith does this guy mention any opposing thoughts, like the scope of projects or something
