freesync/gsync is just tech that allows the GPU to tell the screen to refresh the display (do a vertical blank basically)
I mean that v-sync is the prerequisite for that
also, nvidia doesn't support all freesync displays

also... you don't have to use vsync with g-sync @fluid bloom @lucid walrus, if g-sync is enabled, it should work on both cases (vsync on and off), only difference is that if you have vsync with g-sync enabled, it will cap the rendering at your monitors max rate
if you leave it uncapped, you can max the gpu and potentially get tad less input lag

I used to have Half Life on farm, and I was always worried about the assassins in the warehouse, until I got used to playing with mouse and keyboard properly (after some counterstrike). Then they were a joke. In fact, almost all AI has been a joke since. I know they balance for winnability factors and reducing loss tension in the player, but to me they are just too exploitable. I can't wait to see some kind of true next gen AI, not the current batch of virtual players that run diagnostics automatically

Massive recently changed their AI system for enemies in The Division, and even a slight modification made it better than previous, but it's still dumb as hell and you can enter the AI into strange loops and path them like the pied piper once you know the triggers. What they did do , which was nice, was make the AI more aggressive. So if you are sitting behind cover, not firing, perhaps low on armour after a fight, they will try rush you. Or if you rush them, they will look for new cover (sometimes) etc.
@north torrent could be. Imagining the interface improves to neural tech, then maybe we can afford to up the ante on AI "enforced stupidity" to allow for increased reaction times or at least offer a more technical AI to test humans against, instead of humans testing the AI

Now I guess the real challenge is to make it harder in a way that is a 'fun challenge' as opposed to just ridiculous button prompts or frustratingly clumsy mechanics.

@north torrent AI is easy to make intelligent. You know vector A and vector B and all your actions before they are processed. It's dumbing it down to levels that make it fun which makes creating AI a challenge at all
I think it goes too far either way in most cases. Dark souls used it for artificial difficulty, another game might use it for dumb crowds like in Diablo or PoE.

I just remember back in the day when platforming took thinking. Not in most games you just push forward on the controller and the character auto jumps across the ledge...

yeah and people loved that. The challenge of a Megaman game was an obvious fan choice, same with dark souls. So being too difficult isn't always the issue AI is facing. Variation can be key, regardless of difficulty, in terms of player retention and attention. Rinse repeat AI can turn a fun game into a grind or a fun puzzle depending. Like XCom 2 for instance. If you die once on a level, you know that if you do the same thing, the same things will occur, so you switch it up a little to get a different result. This makes you feel like you are learning, but the AI changes with you. So it becomes a battle of wits. Then there are some games that just up the amount of hitpoints and make the AI rush you :/
One day, there should be a cloud based AI for all games. That can learn all games and create its own profiles for learning. Then we just hook up to the Universal Game AI and add it as a simple module.

@fathom wadi Part of the difficulty was also the limitations of the hardware of the time, and a little by the advent of arcade machines which needed to be feed quarters.
When you can only have levels of a certain size increasing difficulty increases the time it takes and gets you a little more out of a level.

and you edit all these at the same time,

a good way to get in is via internships and junior positions, but you need to show that you have some kind of skill first. So specializing helps show that. I started out specializing in User Interfaces, but drifted into programming from there. I didn't want to be a UI guy, but coming from web dev, it was easy to transition.

If you work on a project that requires 4 or 5 people to work together for it to possibly get done, then it won't get done. Not if you aren't paying these people.
People will have other things going on in their lives that will come before the game and eventually stop putting the work in or doing everything weeks or months late.

Focus in on that one thing that you care most about, make that the core of your project, and then find a way to build a small game around that.

debugging in UE is actually really smart as long as people do follow the rules. If you check Epic code, there are a lot of ensure() and various other checks that if you look at regular plugins, rarely gets used at all. So debugging Epic code always tunnels down back to the issue

@hazy delta Part of the process is selfish in nature. I help people because I want to help, to give back to others who helped me in blogs and articles and plugins etc. But part of it is because it helps me learn new things, and keep fresh on things I already knew, because I cover a lot. It's nice to pick up someone else's problem now and again and advance yourself from it too.

@fathom wadi very true. sometimes when I help I look up stuff myself and learn new things in the process 🙂 it's also reassuring to realise how quickly an answer to a problem comes to your head that's a big hurdle for someone else. Just shows how far you've come

@hazy delta yeah sometimes I can theorise the solution without ever touching the issue previously, so I look it up quickly, then help the person understand it best as I can, and it helps me too. Like writing down a problem being the first step to the solution.

I thought walking dead is finally going somewhere in the past few seasons
the slogging through forests of seasons 1-4 or so was boring
prison part was nice but it kinda fell flat

its like any other soap opera really, but if you appreciate the situation + atmosphere + effects + chars, then its a win/win like any of them. But to me, it was a bit whiny. Depressing almost. Now I do like that sometimes, but not in this setting. Dunno why.
