newer Unity versions have newer physx that handles way more stuff

foggy path
#

a friend was planning some kind of "OpenMSC" but I have no idea if that has made any progress

stiff crystal
#

there are some practical limitations why that game can't upgrade that far

#

like, game is currently dx9 and has 32bit version

#

well, I think you still can do 32bit builds but def can't do dx9 anymore

#

could do opengl I guess

#

but it's still crap if you have to remove feats that could limit your existing userbase

foggy path
#

I think it's actually 64 bit these days if I remember correctly

stiff crystal
#

editor is 64bit only

#

there's still x86 option on builds I think

foggy path
#

my VR hack doesn't even work if you launch the game in dx9 mode lol

#

I was wondering why your nick sounded familiar but I guess if it says 0lento somewhere in MSC that would explain it :D

stiff crystal
#

my name isn't in the credits 🙂

#

I prefer to stay in the shadows 😄

foggy path
#

maybe from IRC or something then 🤔

stiff crystal
#

I'm risu on IRC

foggy path
#

well that's not it then lol

stiff crystal
#

maybe Im famous some other way 🤔

#

I think my nick comes up first if you open UE4's credits :p

#

but nobody even opens that dialog in the editor

I like to keep my name in the shadows too.... shit who changed my name? I am Zorro !

that reminded me that substance painter actually got that auto-uv thing now

I need to try substance painter sometime

I know absolutely nothing about making texture but even basic stuff would probably be a bit nicer than the default ue4 materials I have on my blocky models

@pearl elk id be up for that challenge

foggy path
#

I wonder if there's some kind of VRAM leak in the editor... I've noticed it tends to freeze and stop responding if it's open for a long time, and I've twice had it crash on me with a message about not enough video ram...

#

and I have a 1080 Ti so 12 gigs of VRAM shouldn't be running out anytime soon especially when my project barely uses any kind of textures or anything :D

pearl elk

see how hard is it just to find mens clothing lol

#

but I guess I can get in touch with my inner e-girl

foggy path

I think my last clothing purchase that wasn't a t-shirt was a US navy deck jacket repro 🤔

pearl elk
#

must admit atleast Nike sell a plain pair of cargos under the ACG brand

#

more than I can say for the other mens wear stores which mostly stock skinny jeans

foggy path
#

you need to go to a menswear store not a boyswear store lol

pearl elk
#

I dont want to wear a suit though, Im kinda in the space between casual and formal

#

never worn chinos in my life

#

hell I dont even own a pair of shoes to match a pair of chinos either 😛

foggy path
#

you should try some chinos or khakis, I think they're a nice fit pretty much in the segment you described

#

I used to just wear dark shades and such but now I just wear khakis mostly :P

#

also more comfortable than jeans

pearl elk
#

I tend to wear golf pants which are like khakis I suppose but synthetic

#

they match the sneakers I like to wear, Im not a fan of hard sole shoes

foggy path
#

yeah I tend to wear a bit less sneakery looking sneakers lol

#

been trying to find something a bit "nicer" but having the same problem that I don't like the way they feel, or they just look a bit off from what I'd like

pearl elk
#

yeah I might have to get a nicer pair of skate shoes, see if I can match em with some chinos

#

yeah Im very much about comfort for my feet, looks come second

#

woo here we go, something bit better

#

big boy pants 😛

foggy path

lol

pearl elk
#

I can see why some people just wear the same outfit most of their life

foggy path

this selection looks very similar to what they sell here

#

in a totally different brand's store :P

pearl elk
#

yeah well isnt that why retail is dying, cuz every store is basically the same

#

its like oh lets go to the other shopping centre... why bother they got all the same shops

foggy path

probably :D

XD

#

Well but isn't like when had 14 or it is?

bleak thicket

kinda, the older i get the more i see the big picture and realize that things aren't that different over the times, its just where you are that makes you think they are

#

its like, i understand a lot of those grandpa sentences a lot better

#

one of the most relevant one: It will be fine

median wraith
#

Well you can keep a way to be and remind your inside kid, but it's different of act as a kid every time

bleak thicket
#

no no i am totally thinking as the grandpa

#

you need to see 40 years that everything is fine, that you can say that the next 40 years will probably be fine too

median wraith
#

There is something always to learn

cursive crypt
#

It just looks the same, but its not. A friend of mine is kindergarten teacher, certainly the video-tism is new trend for example.

bleak thicket
#

that is just an anecdote of the time, and yes things change, but the overall picture stays the same: humans want to survive

tulip orbit
#

but they're dumb

cursive crypt
#

Aah, can't argue with such generalization, lol.

median wraith
#

How to describe my 2019 in the most accurate way probably is telling over the years always followed a different path as know the other one goes nowhere, but last year had to check that as never was involved on any of that, as result, was a year learning by brute force fail after fail...
As resume turn out everything was as expected or even worst

tulip orbit
#

dumb, and in large quantities.

bleak thicket
#

oh i dont deny they are dumb

#

just people tend to imagine that we get so dumb that we kill each other

#

while in real we were always dumb and we stay dumb and we dont get really that much dumber, it varies but its still just .... a level of dumbness

#

idiocracy is still a movie and not a documentary although a lot of the parts of it became true ;) but in the end...... no one will start not using water anymore ;)

#

thats what i mean

#

there might be dumb things happening but there are always dumb things happening and they will always happening and we still always survive

#

just relax

#

:D

#

enjoy life is way more important

tulip orbit
#

how can I relax knowing there's so many stupid people out there? and in charge of things!

median wraith
#

If you say in my country that you work for the video games industry, to the other person that means you play tabletop games and rol games, as well your at home 24/7 and can help them to complete any game

#

Happened to me and mates, isn't even a joke

#

Oh and you're a nerd of star wars and these

#

Living in 1990 feels good

cursive crypt
#

Might be cultural thing. Here "working in video game industry" is like you are person who likes to play with toys and laugh as underdeveloped.

#

i.e. borderline "he is not ok", but this involves computers, so maybe there is something respectable as these machines are so complex.

bleak thicket
#

@tulip orbit you need to learn it

median wraith
#

Well this industry wasn't a thing here 5 years ago

#

Now there is a 100:1 ratio of schools teaching it and companies

#

And when I say I learned it (on my own for about 10 years) an individual that learned for near 2 years tell me he studied that as well

#

In degrees where nobody of the teachers made a game even for a jam in their life

cursive crypt
#

Reminds me of the computer science classes before 20 years.

median wraith
#

@bleak thicket anyway the feelings of the people in groups at street overhere catching pokemons are more real than the more of half of couples you see at streets that just meet in an app

bleak thicket
#

wait 10 years

#

;)

median wraith
#

What will happen?

bleak thicket
#

you see some other guy complaining about some other thing people do n the streets

#

and you remember this chat where you complaining about pokemon ;)

median wraith
#

Does that mean

#

You're me from the future?

bleak thicket
#

that its all just rotating out and be slightly different and still the same

#

yeah you could say that, but more like everyone is the future of someone ;) and that all of the times ;)

median wraith
#

XD

bleak thicket
#

do you know why we have a TV?

median wraith
#

Tell me what happened to you there in the future after the 30

#

People have TV but don't use it any more

bleak thicket
#

the point is that we had in the past the fireplace

#

its in our nature to have a place and a direction to look at, we are just made for it, even if you dont have a TV you will have something

stiff crystal
#

pc

bleak thicket
#

thousands years ago some people sat in a cave around a fire and had a chat like we have, just with more ugh ugh

median wraith
#

Yeah well there is always a new thing to replace old ones

#

But there never was so many in personalization and cold over there

bleak thicket
#

its still the same thing ;) just new ;)

median wraith
#

No that I know

bleak thicket
#

but i know where you are coming from

#

cause i was freaking the same questioning the shit out of everything with 30

#

;)

#

and that is always so scary to see

median wraith
#

A person that's funny isn't funny anymore as the people is collapsed of absurd things they see in monitors made by other people like he/she

#

And alike things, idk if see the point there

#

And it seems like if the limit isn't set they don't know where to stop

#

Or probably as these say, this could happened back in the time on same way, just wasn't give the case to see it

bleak thicket
#

yeah thats probably a good way to see it, after seeing so much of this shit, you just group more and more to stay sane

median wraith
#

So in some way I get your point

bleak thicket
#

there is this one say that sticked me with drastical

#

"If you are 20 and not fight the establishment, then you are an asshole, if you are 30 and not are part of the establishment, you are an idiot"

median wraith

It's like someone that live in mountains and never have seem the sea, but have a sexual attraction for the sea, just he don't know, and in the interest of time he see the sea for first time and that happen, neighbours thought he didn't feel that before and think is a problem because he moved to the sea, but that was inside he always

@bleak thicket That saying sounds familiar, and I once told myself if I didn't make it in my chosen career by aged 40, I'd become a politician. Vote for me at the next elections.

bleak thicket

its less about job, more about accepting that you need to change "with" the system instead of just "ram against" it ;)

#

so going politican is actually fulfilling it perfectly

fathom wadi
#

nah fuck the system. It fucked me as a kid, it fucked me as a teen, it fucked me as an adult. I'd rather be dead than helping produce a prison planet

as I am truly cynical and angry about it, all those curse words are totally appropriate in context.

bleak thicket

its actually a very possible career in asia

#

as male

#

they have a gigantic shortage of male actors

median wraith
#

turns out I should go the streets and manifest for the equal income between males and females in that industry

signal citrus

Sutherland is like: i'm a person, i'm secret and seriousness.

fathom wadi
#

yeah to a point. 4 was heading down a new road and 5 was the revision it needed tbh. Its just a shame it was cut short thanks to pachinko and slots :/

signal citrus
#

Yeah cheese is a heavy focus of the game really.

fathom wadi
#

I was dubious about Sutherland at first. But I was absolutely impressed

signal citrus
#

Eh I thought he was terrible really.

#

Dunno how to describe the problem with his performance on that other than it was kinda gnawing

fathom wadi
#

well you are wrong and me and my 100 twitter followers are forming a campaign against you. #FreeSutherland

#

speaking of which, I wonder if they all unfollowed me :p

signal citrus
#

Eh, I mean its still probably my favorite mgs thus far. Sutherland just sounds too sutherland imo

fathom wadi
#

oops. Looks like I accidentally started a revolution in the country of Suther. /runs away

#

4 has to be my fave. Too much afghanistan and oil rigs in the 5th. Not that it was bad, I loved it, but the 4th game, holy shit that was amazing. Even my mother was impressed and she last played a computer game in 1984

signal citrus
#

4 is great don't get me wrong, but there is not a lot of game there

#

Ground Zeros is excellent yeah

#

thing that gets me about V/Ground Zeros is how much stealth has turned into run into situations and take out people quickly

fathom wadi
#

yeah its definitely cinematically orientated, but the set pieces were sublime and kept me wanting to move on. There is a point in 5 that I felt drained taking outposts.

signal citrus
#

Its a great mechanic, the slow down thing. but it leaves a lot to be desired from the other series because of how powerful it is

#

I really though the way 5 with outposts was probably the biggest ontaking of gameplay in the series.

#

Like its not real perfect by any means.

fathom wadi
#

it felt more like filler for open world tbh. Rinse repeat stuff. Except the odd one that was story linked. The flow was nice, but there is a lot to do

signal citrus
#

But it makes stuff like searching for diamonds fun

#

Kind of agree. I would qualify it less as filler and more as a constant thing player has to consider on top of everything else.

#

Motherbase and everything

#

Like same deal, it could be called filler but its wonderfully executed imo. Gives you something to think about when you take someone down that other games don't really have you think about.

#

"This guy is smart?"

#

Ballooned.

#

Hard to call all that filler at least imo. Its a big part of the game

#

If you look only at the storyline though, sure

fathom wadi
#

no the general amount of same scenario open world stuff I mean. Not the mechanics of the player or anything. Just "basic output 243" that is in the way so you end up taking 30 minutes sneaknig around it to get to where you were going 30 minutes ago. etc. But they did break it up with those story level areas to push the story, so if you were tailing the storyline arc closely, I guess its less of a grind.

signal citrus
#

Definitely not grindy like i hear death stranding is

#

still have not tried that one

#

literally right?

fathom wadi
#

I'd play Death Stranding if I could get 5 minutes on the ps4. /hums the farcry5 tune

Thoughts on whether putting a source control server in a concrete out building that can survive an EF5 tornado is just as good as paying for a server elsewhere?

tulip orbit
#

I'd put it on the roof attached to a kite

plucky pagoda
#

I've been trying to find an offsite solution for too long. I'm thinking of just putting a server in the tornado shelter and keeping it climate controlled.

pearl elk
#

there are companies who offer this sort of backup service

#

main issue is flooding, if its underground its a swimming pool

plucky pagoda
#

It's an above ground 8*10 reinforced building with 4 foot forked anchors in the ground and bolted to the building at each corner.

pearl elk
#

best suggestion I have is to backup in multiple locations over the world, less likely for there to be catastrophes in all the places at once

plucky pagoda
#

Yeah, I agree but $$$

pearl elk
#

I think you'd be alright with just running a few hdds out to your shelter in time of crisis. Thats basically my fire plan, grab the laptop and hdds and run

plucky pagoda
#

I have that though. I keep an SSD with a backup on it outside the tower. I was thinking of putting a PC out there with perforce or plastic on it.

pearl elk
#

we do have a fire proof safe for the rifles but I still think electronics could be too fragile to survive in there

bleak thicket
#

SSD lose the data pretty quick

#

2-3 years without power and its gone

#

just reminding ;)

plucky pagoda
#

I mean if something like this is needed it's not going to sit around for that long.

#

Everytime I look at options though once you get above 100GB or anywhere near 1TB it starts to get pricey for hosting.

pearl elk
#

yeah Im not sure what happened but hosting prices just skyrocketed

bleak thicket
#

oh yeah sure, its just like important to understand, the longer the data can be on something the more fragile is it. SSD is like invincibile mosty but loses data quick, while classic harddisc with rotating rust are fragile if you want to store them, you need to keep them at right temperature and away from magnets and stuff

#

as i often mentioned, hetzner.de is selling 10 x 10 TB for 200 EUR / month ;)

#

free traffic

pearl elk
#

tape drives are still in use for backups

bleak thicket
#

and ultra fragile

#

but will hold longer as a harddisc if stored correctly

#

thats the catch

#

always

#

i am so often thinking of offsite backup of some of my very old data, but there is practical no good way.

#

i mean like offline offsite ;)

pearl elk
#

tbh when I look at my ultra important data theres very little of it

plucky pagoda
#

I have hard drives that are 20 years old and still have data on them. The only ones I've seen fail usually do it early.

bleak thicket
#

banks in germany use magnets for the storage units, so you cant store anything fragile there to magnets

#

true

plucky pagoda
#

Yeah, all I care about is my work product. I have a lot of projects I need to ensure are protected from loss.

bleak thicket
#

or get 2, one in germany one in finland

#

then you are safe till europe gets bombed

#

\o/

plucky pagoda
#

If I could afford 200/month I wouldn't be sweating the costs.

pearl elk
#

well just dont start any shit Germany and you wont get bombed 😛

plucky pagoda
#

I mean I probably could pay that, I'm just not willing to.

bleak thicket
#

@pearl elk right now... we are pretty much one of the top 5 adults on the planet, and its kinda weird feeling

#

seeing my government making so many good statements international

#

historical weird

#

;)

plucky pagoda
#

Yeah, it's a bit insane out there

pearl elk
#

we are at the kiddy table here in Australia

bleak thicket
#

the.. burning kiddy table ;)

pearl elk
#

yeah well Trump is head of our table 😛

bleak thicket
#

the good thing to remember tho

#

even if you guys would have done everything in your power

#

it would have ended the same

plucky pagoda
#

65 F yesterday, snowed before this morning and tornados last night. Eveyrthing's great.

bleak thicket
#

its not like australia alone would have changed this perspective

pearl elk
#

sounds like youre pretty well prepared with the shelter though

bleak thicket
#

in the end, its actually good for the movement that australia is so bad about climate change, it fuels the argument better as if you would try and then still had this "failure"

plucky pagoda
#

We got hit hard last spring near where we live, I bought one the next day.

pearl elk
#

See the thing is Im a centrist so I dont really buy into all the climate change stuff, surely humans have an impact on the Earth like dirtying up the oceans. My issue is the mob we have in atm are so ignorant of things around them they try to shoot down empirical data as conspiracies and groupthink. The BOM here told us before winter started we wouldnt get much rain, I remember because we dont have mains water so we have to ration. These guys just ignored it and boom, here we are climate change or not they still fucked it up

bleak thicket
#

oh dear

#

there is no centrist if one side is just lying

#

yes we are really the ones impacting all this

#

and there is 100% consense about

#

there is no science that denies it

pearl elk
#

the issue is dude they got into power with their political rhetoric of denialism

bleak thicket
#

its just boring and kinda demeaning to anything people learned to ignore this reality

pearl elk
#

so taking climate change out of the equation is the way to win the debate

bleak thicket
#

what?

#

what debate?

pearl elk
#

politics isnt about facts

#

never has been

bleak thicket
#

it is actually if it would want to come forward

#

people who want to have power say politics is not about facts

#

so fascist and stuff

#

that is why the Democrats in US have such a hard time, cause America is a country full of people who blieve "winner takes it all" so its all about the winning

pearl elk
#

if it were about facts we would have a government which supports the facts

bleak thicket
#

ther eis no dialgoue which is normal in politics in other coutnries

#

well lets say, there are other countries which make it better

#

so you could look at them and copy

#

you should watch "Where To Invade Next"

#

you can say about moore what you want, i can approve you that all he says in there about europe is 100% true and not faked or showed wrong.

#

and if you see that, and still think that you cant become better then you just gave up ;)

pearl elk
#

yeah it doesnt work like that, we cant copy something if we have deniers in power so the way to win the debate and get into power is stop with the climate change boogeyman and focus on the empirical data.

bleak thicket
#

dude

#

it does work like that in other countries

#

the only fight in europe we have is about the methods and how we actually do it, and how much we do it

#

the science is not denied, the costs are denied

pearl elk
#

yes I understand but how does that help me?

bleak thicket
#

it should show you that there is a path

#

and if your country would looking at the path other coutnries took

#

you can get out of this

#

just to remind:

pearl elk
#

I need a change of government and the way to win that debate is to win the people, facts dont win debates

the democrats of US are Ultra-Conservatives in EU

The shift toward the right in the United States happened in the 1980s.

progressives get hammered for being poor economic leaders because so called conservatives live in an industrial age where strip mining the entire planet is a-okay

north torrent
#

I don't even know what party I would put John Kennedy in if he were alive today...

#

That was an era where the two parties were sort of up in the air and slowly shifting sides. Nixon was the one who eventually flipped the red and the blue.

pearl elk
#

thing is the US policy has a huge impact on the internet, so it doesnt matter if youre in EU because US law applies to servers in their country

north torrent
#

It wasn't as clear cut as it has been in the post-Reagan era. It probably won't be as clear cut in the coming decade either. We are on the tail end of an era of balance between the two parties.

pearl elk
#

If there were more EU options for software Id use em in a heartbeat tbh

north torrent
#

Just use Blender.

pearl elk
#

how bout they make a version of Linux to rival Windows first and we go from there 😛

north torrent
#

Windows is what has solidified English as the universal language for Earth.

It was already heading down that road because of the age of Imperialism and the industrial revolution and all, but the fact that nobody wants to build an operating system was the final nail in that coffin.

pearl elk
#

doesnt help that Murdoch runs the press here so all Trump has to do is call up, throw a few bribes around and hey presto... right wing Australia

north torrent
#

How many states do you think Richard Nixon won in his election?

#

Not the one against Kennedy, the one before he got impeached.

pearl elk
#

Apparently US Imperialism is still a thing but Trump is actually fighting against it because he doesnt want endless wars.... Least that what he says

#

Trumps a progressive dude dont believe the fake news 😛

north torrent
#

He says that, while he bombs the leader of a large military.

plucky pagoda
#

Hey, but nobody's talking about the emails that came out the same day.

pearl elk
#

didnt Nixon win in a huge landslide

north torrent
#

Anyways, Richard Nixon won 49 out of the 50 states in 1972. He carried the popular vote %60 vs %38.

Then he got impeached and his party lost the next election.

The largest victory in the history of US politics belongs to the guy that got removed from office.

pearl elk
#

But having a crook represent all the crooks makes sense right 😛

plucky pagoda
#

All the recent Republican presidents lost the popular vote but won the electoral college.

north torrent
#

Against John Kennedy in 1960, Richard Nixon won California while Kennedy won Texas.

So the modern idea of what a Republican and Democrat are don't really apply that far back.

#

George Bush beat John Kerry in the popular vote. He lost by a small amount to Gore however.

tRump lost by over 3 million votes to Clinton in the popular vote.

#

In 1820 the US had an election with only one candidate. He won 80% of the popular vote... not sure where the other 20% went to...

pearl elk
#

so what youre telling me is if a boomer starts lecturing me on what they gave us I can say well you helped elect Nixon 😛

north torrent
#

Chances are they either voted for Nixon or didn't vote.

pearl elk
#

Steve Jobs wasnt even old enough to vote then lol

plucky pagoda
#

They had high paying union jobs with a High school diploma and tuition costs for a year that were what a few credit hours cost today. They can keep it.

north torrent
#

In 1972?

pearl elk
#

nope he was 17, legal voting age is 18 there like here?

north torrent
#

Well, he probably voted for Reagan.

pearl elk
#

trying to think of a modern US President I actually liked

north torrent
#

Reagan won 49 states in 1984.

north torrent
#

The popular vote was a %59 - %41 split though, so it wasn't as one sided as the states may show.

pearl elk
#

mind you this little spat is still ongoing but the leaders have changed

north torrent
#

Reagan only had %50.7 of the popular vote the first time he won, but carried 44 states.

pearl elk
#

I feel like the US and Australia need to join forces and get some new crayons for the electoral collage 😛

#

bit of yellow, some purple, orange and green

#

Red v Blue is the cause of alot of tension in the US

north torrent
#

When Clinton beat old George Bush there were by far more right wing voters in the US. However Ross Perot and his right wing Independent party cut very deep into the traditional Republican vote that Clinton won two elections.

pearl elk
#

feel like every election you guys have is another round of civil war the reality tv show

north torrent
#

If you look back at history, there has been a lot of different colors in US elections.

pearl elk
#

they just dont show em at the state level right, you probably have some sort of preferences like we do when a minor party wins votes

north torrent
#

1992
Clinton - 44 million
Bush - 39 million
Perot -20 million

#

Just like Jimmy Carter might have beat Ronald Reagan if John B. Anderson hadn't run as a 3rd party.

pearl elk
#

we did have one year here were it was a deadlock but Gillard won over the independents to form a government

#

we have Labor and the Greens, theyre typically about 25-35% and 10-20%, they dont join but they work together on some issues. The coalition is Liberals and Nationals which is typically 50% of votes, its really difficult to cut into their hardline base

north torrent
#

The southern states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia have on several occasions split from the 2 party system because neither of the 2 candidates for the red or blue party were racist enough.

pearl elk
#

One Nation has in certain places but they are far right so its not any better

#

we have no center progressives only far left

#

so basically those states think theyre still not part of the US

north torrent
#

We have no Far Left, just Mild Right and Far Right.

pearl elk
#

we have a far left, theyve never held more than 3 seats yet every bad policy is their fault somehow

#

but but the greenies have invaded local councils and the state level politics and run it from the shadows

#

faint echos of soros in the background

#

apparently all science has a far left leaning agenda, makes it easy for the right wing nutters to win any debate

#

oh that data, yeah thats fake news

north torrent
#

1948, 1960, and 1968 all saw southern states turn away from the 2 party system and give electoral votes to a 3rd party candidate, solely because the the red and blue candidates weren't racists.

But right now we are in a 2 decade long red vs blue phase. 1996 was the last time purple was relevant on a presidential map.

pearl elk
#

yeah see Ive only been really aware of politics for 25yrs at most

#

I woulda been too busy playin Quake to pay attention to US politics 😛

north torrent
#

I've studied the history of US politics, but generally people on the Right don't want to listen to what history tells us. They have their own view of what 'Conservative America' was back in the day, and the facts tend to make their world view hurt.

pearl elk
#

yes well Im sure hollywood is partly to blame for glorifying what middle America used to be back in the day

#

its always so clean, such well manicured lawns, everyone is so patriotic and well employed

#

north torrent

Burger King is also popular in China.

#

I am constantly studying cinematography because I find it important to good story telling.

pearl elk
#

I like seeing innovative solutions to including cinematography in games without locking the player down

north torrent
#

I like to look back at older cinematography and how the medium of film grew over the past 100 years.

These was a time when making a cut in a movie was unheard of, until of course someone did it.

The game industry certainly needs people to do the same. There are people out there doing it right now.

#

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

pearl elk
#

have you seen 1917 yet? Its meant to be good, the entire movie is a oner

north torrent
#

Alfred Hitchcock did the movie 'Rope' all from one camera view with no cuts. In the end he said it was the worst thing he had ever done...

pearl elk
#

Hardcore Henry and The Villainess are interesting, they are like game inspired movies in a way but they also take action movies to the next level

north torrent
#

Makes you think about how many games do the same thing, and it works for some, but if your main focus is creating a feeling in your scene it may not be the best choice.

pearl elk
#

scripted stuff is easier to control though, unfortunately the move to open world games has made it more difficult to control the scripting

north torrent
#

But that's why games like Outer Worlds frustrate me with the super dated look to the conversations.

It is really hard to make a fun conversation when you are just staring at someone in the middle of the screen while they talk at you and have no other voice actor to bounce dialogue off of.

pearl elk
#

its not impossible though, people just dont seem to try and are happy to stick to formulaic games just as people are in a majority of movies

north torrent
#

Exactly, but there will always be a few people on the edge trying to do something new.

#

Too bad my biggest weakness is making interesting interfaces... otherwise I would probably be able to do a lot more with pushing the limits of dialogue in games.

pearl elk
#

yeah thats why I do have some respect for Kojima, he does have a way of making gameplay seem cinematic without forcing the eye. Unfortunately he does force his direction when it comes to cutscenes, it feels like they are still at odds with one another instead of the gameplay and scripted cinematography flowing together

north torrent
#

I don't expect my game to ever make money, but I would like to someday gain enough popularity to get an animator to work with me on a project.

So much in a conversation can be told without words, I think if I had a quality animator to work with I could do a lot more with trying to tell a story with as minimal dialogue as possible.

pearl elk
#

animation has always been a hurdle for my larger ideas too, I can code alot in terms of gameplay but without the animations to match it just wont work. I do have some ideas on how to get around it but ultimately it would be nice to have a cast of characters with a range of emotions

north torrent
#

For now I will just work with what I can do myself, so it will be more word heavy. But even without an animator I can do some basic body language and I can do a lot with how the actors are placed and move around the scene.

Blocking a scene with where the actors stand in comparison to the environment is a very powerful tool.

pearl elk
#

I just dont know how I could prototype it in a cheap way to convey it to people who could fund a decent cast. I feel like any sort of simplification will not bring the idea through enough without stumbling upon someone with natural talent for acting

north torrent
#

Environmental storytelling is what my skillset best matches, but that is an already well explored area that doesn't excite me the same way as dialogue or lack there of.

pearl elk
#

yeah dialogue cameras in games are pretty terrible, theyre usually not even as good as an extremely bad TV show

north torrent
#

The ones that try to be 'cinematic' throw in the kind of camera angles you would see in movies... but it seems like they just do it at random because "well... movies have cuts so we should too if we want to be cinematic" and not because they are using it to tell the story.

There are certainly exceptions however.

#

I'm listening to some old guy complain about the Witcher because he is mad that women use swords in the show.

pearl elk
#

yeah cutscenes tend to be better directed but ingame cameras omg, I dont think Ive ever seen a decent pan

#

its just cut to this camera, cut to that camera, instead of a slow zoom to show both people

north torrent
#

I'm talking more about dialogue cameras, which are sort of between a cutscene camera and an in game camera.

pearl elk
#

over the shoulder camera is pretty bad for conversations too, its like why can I see this big shape for not much reason

north torrent
#

It is good for blocking if that's what the scene calls for. But thrown in randomly... no...

pearl elk
#

lol its more like, lets just not do any camera direction at all. I have seen that sort of thing used well in fixed camera games

north torrent
#

I would take Fallout 4s random camera to Outer Worlds fixed camera...

#

I get that in a game as big as Fallout 4 you can't just go and script every conversation with unique cameras, so my point is not meant to insult that game.

I just think that someone working with a much smaller scope can do more to try to innovate things. It is easier to take risks and pay attention to all the small details when your game is tiny.

pearl elk
#

Well maybe we arnt being hard enough on AAA games, sure its not easy to make games but at the same time they are the ones in the best position to push the bar.

#

Its really not fair that indies and smaller studios take all the time to do R&D on a concept and get it through to a game just to have a bigger company take that and make it theirs

north torrent
#

I certainly think AAA games should stop only focusing on making bigger and bigger open worlds.

There is certainly a place for huge open worlds, but there are also people who don't have 80 hours to play a game and would rather have a high quality 20 hour open world game with a much smaller map.

#

Life isn't fair.

pearl elk
#

yeah but there are so many protections in place if youre at the top of the food chain

#

Imagine if you tried to take some tech that EA uses for example, theyd be on that shit quicker than a blowfly

#

but you come up with an innovative camera technique, guaranteed you'll see it in all of their titles next year

north torrent
#

The United States is socialism for the wealthy and rugged capitalism for the poor.

The wealthy are allowed to take big gambles in the stock market and file for bankruptcy and have it all forgiven.

But when that company goes bankrupt the guy who cleaned the floors loses his job and has zero protection at all. Loses his health insurance and everything.

pearl elk
#

going back to open worlds though this is why Im not fussed if Cyberpunk 2077s Night City seems smaller than the Witcher 3

north torrent
#

This is the moment that I decided I wanted to do cinematic dialogue in games...

pearl elk
#

I would much prefer a smaller more vibrant world than a large sparse one. The difference is obvious from say the original NFS Most Wanted game through to NFS Heat, the world became less and less populated, larger but less to do

#

the same happens to TV shows when they have too many lead characters to follow around. You end up with sparse bits of story they have to try to force together rather than focusing on scenes with most of the lead characters present

#

kinda like the difference between a TV show and a movie in a way. Having to be concise can be better, if you can fit something into 2x2hr parts to make a miniseries its probably a better idea than using filler to make it a 5x1.5hr series

north torrent
#

Obviously as a solo dev I keep my scope super, super small. But I think even if I had a large team I would still stay as small as possible.

#

I find a lot of the newer movies I watch try to cram too much into 2 hours... I find the pacing to be a bit to hectic for my taste. Sometimes a story needs time to breath.

zinc matrix
pearl elk
#

yeah I can certainly see that myself, lots of fast cuts, cameras bouncing around everywhere left and right. When you go back to just 90s the suspense and build up is far more prevalent in the movies, it was less of the instagratification

#

There are some modern exceptions but it used to be the other way around

#

Its actually one thing I liked the Bourne movies for, its not the best movies but the camera during the action is less shaky so you actually get a good view of things

#

I feel like the modern shaky cam is an excuse for poor choreography and stunts

north torrent
#

I honestly am not a fan of one sided dialogue with silent playable characters. I liked Mass Effect a lot more than Dragon Age.

zinc matrix
#

Silent protagonist is good for role-playing 🙂

#

I've done Dragon age 2 dialog style as well, I can't find it right now

north torrent
#

That's why I like going to back to old movies and learning from them, Mr. Olympus. I think there is a lot we can learn from the storytelling of cinematographers working with simpler technology.

#

I'm not creative enough to role-play, Mr. Adludum.

lusty portal
#

What's up guys!

pearl elk
#

it would be cool to play a game that felt like an old movie

north torrent
#

If I were to write dialogue for a game with a silent protagonist, I would use conversations with more that one NPC as often as possible, that way the voice actors would have more content to bounce off of.

pearl elk
#

I guess thats one thing I liked about Tex Murphy, it didnt feel like a cyberpunk thing it was more noir

north torrent
#

I plan on making a game that is 4:3 aspect ratio and in black and white. I really like the way 4:3 frames the face and conversations.

#

I want to capture this kind of look.

pearl elk
#

yeah see thats a good camera, still got abit of that over the shoulder thing going but you can see both faces

north torrent
#

The way you can catch the shadows and highlights in black and white is a lost art I think...

#

I think it would be a fun challenge in Unreal. Something I am far more suited for than animation, that's for sure.

#

Just focus on trying to capture the texture of everything.

north torrent
#

My current project is built around using 21:9 cinematic widescreen for all my compositions.

I think I will use black bars by default for 16:9 screens, but have a 16:9 option in the main menu.

pearl elk
#

Psycho was on the other night, its amazing how good the quality of the black and white is on that one

north torrent
#

Overall I like cinematic widescreen best, but I think both have their own interesting elements than can be used best in certain kinds of environments and stories.

For my game set in a small village in the vast mountains the ultrawide frames the scale of the scene much better.

For the one I plan to make in the future, it is set in one single house where the furthers you can go is outside in the courtyard. Both the setting and the plot make you feel a bit trapped in the small space, and I think 4:3 really helps push that.

For that game I plan to have it locked to 4:3 regardless of your monitor. I'm thinking about having it slowly open up into a wider aspect ration as you get more clues and understand the situation better.

#

I was also thinking about having the characters or items in the house slowly regain color as you learn more about them. Starting out super desaturated but eventually getting to about a 50% saturation level. That would be the max..

foggy path
#

That sounds like an interesting idea

north torrent
#

I'm hoping to keep it small, as I only have to design one house and a handful of characters and dialogue. The story should be a rather short experience.

stiff crystal
#

I don't like wasting display are for black bars at all, especially on games

north torrent
#

A lot of people feel that way. But that's why I make games for myself and not to sell.

stiff crystal
#

people have different aspect ratio monitors too

#

for gaming as well

#

that 21:9 setup will have black bars on sides on 32:9 monitors

foggy path
#

I'm just making my current project so I can make some friends play it and add all kinds of annoying ways for them to die or fail in amusing ways in a game where you don't necessarily expect to die much lol

north torrent
#

For my current game I will give them the option for whatever aspect ration, but the default will be 21:9 and give you black bars at anything more narrow.

The black and white mini-game I want to make I plan to lock it. It wouldn't be right at 21:9. If people don't like that, they wouldn't like the game to begin with.

foggy path
#

if as a side effect other people end up having fun with it then that's great :P

stiff crystal
#

theres been few platformers that have been designed like that @foggy path

foggy path
#

yeah I get the feeling some of the "rage games" have been designed like that :D

Most people will see a game in black and white and instantly not play it. So I'm not doing this as something I expect people to like.

man I really hate Logitech headsets! Before I got this one I told myself, no more Logitech, look around at reviews and they all tell me the same thing this is the best headset for gaming. I look on Amazon and I see a good Nov bargain so I make the buy. 6 Months later the switch to turn them on/off starts failing, it gets worse and worse till I remove the plastic off the switch but now the switch itself is failing. Looks like Im gonna have to get the soldering iron out and do it properly

ancient ingot

Logitech used to be good but sadly no longer 😦

I mean seriously theres digital buttons all over the thing and they use an old crappy analog switch to turn em on/off

dvorak is supposed to place the letters and combinations used most often so they have the least amount of finger movement. I saw faster typing speeds when I used it, but I still didn't like it since I had to switch back and forth. I like the kinesis advantage keyboards. Once you setup some macros on it , it's pretty fast to get things done.

zinc matrix

<@&213101288538374145> I tried to dm one of you but couldn't could one of you dm me please thanks

plucky pagoda

I use to write for a living and liked it for that. Not so much for coding though

foggy path
#

interesting

#

I tried to learn it for a while because I was curious but it was too painful lol

#

There's also an alternative layout called colemak which is more similar to qwerty but supposedly designed with improving speed in mind

#

I tried learning that for fun as well at one point, got a bit further than with dvorak but gave up eventually

plucky pagoda
#

It was too much of a pain when having to switch back forth whenever Iw as at another pc

signal citrus

Eh, old dooms left a lot to be imagined

#

Like, always thought those demons throwing fire balls were furry like bears

Two new dooms seem more like a sequel to brutal doom mod, Idk. When you go up that stairway and can see out the window slime pit and all that in second level of doom, with all the flashing lights and buttons, they kind of missed that aspect of it.

placid thistle
#

it left a lot to be imagine because it was made by a handful of dudes with limited tech.. I don't why it should be like that in 2020..

#

Also, I don't think there was a lot to be imagined - there was no lore and no story at all 🙂

Doom 3 was the game with a lot of unanswered question.. Doom was always just for a quick pew pew..
