Nvidia app crashes my pc when updating

Since the geforce experience app was done away with the new nvidia app won't update my drivers at all. It happened on a brand new install of windows last year, and still happens now. I can post a short clip of what happens, but it basically black screens my computer and I have to force it to shutdown and restart again by holding the power button. I had NO issues with the geforce experience app and haven't been able to get the new app to work at all, even with the "clean driver install".

Additionally, I've been having to manually install drivers from nvidias website for updates but the nvidia app itself doesn't recognize them, anything I click it just says "please install drivers"

By the looks of it when you force rebooted the PC the first time you messed up the installation, the drivers will flash the screen and keep the screen black for minutes even depending on your system during installation. But you also say that this has been going on for at least a year? You need to use DDU to clean the whole installation again, you can see in the install process that nvidia is uninstalling something but it cant finish.
