my PC died so a friend is lending me his laptop, did a full reset and have both the latest nvidia and intel drivers installed. In windows display settings, it says both the inbuilt screen and my monitor are using the integrated graphics, but my monitor looks like pic. I want to use the nvidia gpu to hopefully fix this and get better performance, but whenever I disable the integrated graphics in device manager, it switches to the microsoft basic display adapter instead of the gpu. I know the gpu is working because I can still manage 3D settings in nvidia control panel and it still shows in task manager, I just cant use it.
#Intel integrated graphics wont go away so I can use the GPU

ok i may be dumb. i fixed the weird glitchiness by just pushing the hdmi cable in more….. however i still cant figure out how to only use the gpu so my games arent running using the integrated graphics
Your laptop's internal display (and most of its outputs) are wired to the iGPU, while games and other demanding applications should automatically run on your more powerful dGPU. Please make sure you don't have anything disabled in device manager, as this won't work with the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver your iGPU will use in that case
There is always a chance that automatic detection fails. In this case, add the application in question to NVIDIA Control Panel -> "Manage 3D settings" -> "Program settings" and set it to run on the dGPU yourself. A, slightly outdated, visual guide for this is available at https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2615/~/how-do-i-customize-optimus-profiles-and-settings%3F ("How do I create Optimus settings for a new program?")
ohh thank you i had no idea i had to manually add some games, and that its all wired to the igpu, im a newb when it comes to laptops lol
@deep canopy @karmic plume That advice is for older systems. On almost all computers that ship with hardware designed for Windows 10 or later, go here instead:
Windows Settings > System > Display > scroll down to Graphics > your options are here
