I live in Australia not NZ so take this with a grain of salt because I've only visited. But if you're getting a car anyway might be worth keeping it for the South island. Driving will make it much easier to get to most places there

Train AKL to WLTN will cost you about $300+ depending on where you take it from. The journey isn't much faster than driving. It's beautiful, however. If you could fly into Nelson, there's a rental place there called Zoom, which is a very small one, but has very very cheap prices compared to the usual big companies like Avis etc.
Small domestic flights are the most convenient and fasted way to hop from island to island, in most cases

Piha is one of the most popular surf beaches, which is out north west of Auckland. It's got black sand, which is a different experience.
In the city itself, there's Mission Bay, which frequently has a volleyball net up, and has a great array of bars and restaurants.
Beautiful park there, too.
If you're travelling further afield, then Waihi beach is very popular.

It occurred to me yesterday I might have withdrawal symptoms if I have to sit and watch stuff all day and not get to play. And my laptop, which I bought specifically for PoE is not my usual preferred slimline thing. It is heavy and huge and would be a pain in the ass to carry.

oh gosh...I don't think I could do that. It'd be banged up and cruddy after my trip. I don't treat my equipment very well. And I love the PoE graphics, which was why I tried to get a half decent 'gaming' laptop for it. So i couldn't handle going back to uglier resolution and worse handling overall. I'll carry the behemoth...was just wondering if lugging your game laptop around was a 'thing'...My husband had a policy of never leaving valuables in hotels anyway, so it means i will pretty much be lugging it with me everywhere...

I guess my gripe was more that them being there wasn't a selling point for me. I am more interested in listening to game design choices from ggg themselves. I found it fascinating to listen to Chris talk about the thinking behind currency and deliberate move away from gold.
Maybe that was influenced by diablo, I only have played the original version years ago in my uni years, I don't remember. But I never found diablo as compelling as poe.
But you have me thinking if I should upgrade too. The idea i actually plan to put leave in for this soon has me taking the event more seriously. I just feel I will be too anti-social to benefit from it. I certainly won't know a soul there.

I haven't purchased myself, but I believe it's a print-at-home PDF of the ticket - with the ticket being linked to your account. Because it's linked to your account, it knows who gets the MTX

the fees are NZeTA & IVL
This was taken directly from the NZ immigration page
From 1 October 2019, some visitors and transit passengers must have an Electronic Travel Authority and pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy before travelling to NZ.
and it applies to everyone not already applying for a visa.

The IVL costs NZD$35 for each person travelling to New Zealand
you can register to receive notifications about any changes on these policies through this link to the immigration page.

If you're NOT from a visa waiver country, you need to apply for a visa - (https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/apply-for-a-visa/about-visa/visitor-visa).
Also, if you're from a visa waiver country, it's probably best if you register to get the notification when the NZeTA system goes live, since we all know that we'll probably never remember on our own.
And @vapid bluff If it's anything like applying for an ETA for another country, then generally yes, you'll need to enter your passport number, which may change when you renew/apply for a passport.

Free water is usually available anywhere that alcohol is served - it's part of the liquor policy. Sparkling water usually isn't available, but some places do have it on offer for a price. Still water is the norm.
I can't think of any issues with NZ tap water - there may be one or two small town settlements with sketchy water, but everywhere else is good, including cities and tourist areas.

Okay. I'm honestly on the fence about this one. Everyone goes on about a UMF = Unique Manuka Factor and how much of the honey was vomited up by bees who ate manuka pollen. To me, it's like the Tumeric craze - it's supposed to be amazing and wonderful and cure cancer etc etc but I'm not sure I've ever seen anything scientific that actually says manuka is anything other than a different foodc source for bees, although in saying this, I've never looked for anything scientific about it.
I prefer the texture of manuka honey, but that's because it's usually refined slightly differently and comes out silkier/runnier/less cloudy ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ

Manuka is pushed mostly for marketing purposes since nz and "natural" things are in right now. There are studies around manuka's effects, but nothing beyond placebo or getting to clinical trials ive seen. The less cloudy thing is partially because it's sold uncreamed. We have local chocolate that took over most of the market after cadbury ballsed it up. No idea if you can get Whittaker's online or not. As far as i know we don't get a ton of local varients of things bar L&P. There's a hell themed pizza franchise but you can't really take it with you.

@vapid bluff get them chocolate with some kiwi fruit filling? my SIL did that for me and I appreciated it. Seems kiwi fruit is the NZ theme thing...Chocolate in the US is BAD. The first time I bought a cadbury block there, I spat it out and binned it. Aussie cadbury is creamier and yummier. I think they tried to change the recipe a while back but many, including my complained in writing. Survived off Lindt chocolates for my 5 months over in the US for work many years ago...

As I said, Cadbury tried to cut back on the milk or cocoa here, canโt remember, but it was immediately obvious. It was in the news for us I think, people were outraged enough they had to revert back. Hershey is that watered down powdery chocolate I associate the US with. Not nice.
And yeah, I know what you mean @lilac kelp , like you would assume a basic chicken sandwich canโt be so different in the US as other places, but everywhere I went, they had this mayo slushy tuna-like chicken replacement. It was totally yuk. Like, what happened to real chicken?!

Iโm from southern US. My tickets were about 1000$ total. And I think Iโm rooming w Mult and I think from what Iโve heard the airbnb are generally cheap like 40-50$ a night. Iโm probably going to try and bring an extra 500$ or more ish just for food and extras and stuff. @burnt light

Because I would suggest like 1750 ish. Tickets for me were 1000$, 400$ for Airbnb (split between me, multiplicity and his friend) for around 75-100$ each, depending on your edilecon ticket 100-500$, and Iโm bringing maybe 500-750$ extra for just extras but I probably wonโt use that much, unless we go to the bars or something then I might use all of it in one day (hopefully im joking). So I have the basic ticket so In total around 1750$ish. If you bought the super duty vip ticket more like 2200. Now if you are worried about the price u could probably do cheaper version than what we are doing but Iโm not too worried about money right now, so Iโm just kinda going with the flow.
As for your second question I got my plane ticket off google, it usually scans for cheapest tickets and then I got mine from the airliner that is flying me to where I need to go. @burnt light

if you need passport acquisition advice i can probably help, i just had to apply for a new one recently cause mine had been expired too long
also just as an FYI on the off chance that this actually affects someone, NZ does have a 3 month validity period meaning that the expiration date on your passport must be at least your departure date from NZ + 3 months.
