0. Get a torrent client, I like deluge, but if you google it you'll get a good list. A torrent client opens a .torrent file and actually downloads the files.
0.1. Make sure you're using the stand-alone client, not the steam client. If you want to switch to standalone from steam, add an email at https://www.pathofexile.com/my-account/change-email
0.2. It's a 15 GB+ download as it's the whole pak, the actual patch will be smaller so if you're on a metered connection you can wait for that
0.3 When using a torrent you are both uploading and downloading the file (you're helping out others who are also downloading), so this might not be for you if you're on a metered connection.
- Get the torrent from the POE site https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2451994 and open it with your torrent client
- Let the torrent client download the torrent. Don't worry if at the start the estimate is a long time, the speed will increase when you connect to more peers and figure out who has the fastest download speed for you
2.1. Check back in an hour or two, it's a 15GB download. Make sure your torrent client gets to 100% before continuing - Once downloaded you should have a .zip file. Extract it (right click the file)
- Replace the .ggpk file in your Path of Exile directory with the extracted file from your torrent (tdefault directory in 64 bit windows is C:\Program Files (x86)\Grinding Gear Games\Path of Exile)
- Launch the when POE has tweeted that the patching servers are up. If you do it sooner it'll try to patch for 3.5.
- There's normally a small patch to download with latest additions and stuff that doesn't go into the pak.
6.1 When the patching servers go up delete the torrent from your torrent client or close it so that your bandwidth isn't being used anymore.
