it may just be a bug in poe1, as the animation seems to imply they're meant to go together.

I usually rock the rot shaman with chernobog's pillar shield. The cape from the lord of ogham pack also goes pretty good with it imo.

I got extremely lucky and got the unique fire immune chest on my merc at level 7-8, legit carried me for a minute lol, got two other uniques I think a wand and offhand but nothing else from like 9-22, really felt my dps fall off was hurting for a unique weapon bad before I died lol

weapons like hoghunt are usually the exception, your best bet is to craft a good yellow as those typically are stronger than uniques.

I'm figuring out crafting but it seems like a solid unique early on that gives something like the one that makes your bolt not be consumed if you reloaded recently would be much better than what you can realistically make with limited supplies on a fresh run

I would say really early, yeah uniques can be powerful.
Especially leveling uniques.

But if you get lucky w/ a orb of transmutation/alteration and spam buying whites you can make some decent crafts that you can then slam w/ a regal/exalted orb.

Yeah, the important part is getting a good blue. The yellow bit is just going the extra mile if you land something good on a blue.

You do got that double roll that's pretty much carrying the weapon though.

A better yellow would be the first two mods + an attack speed mod.

I couldn't find much with just xbow that I could use to combo with the shotgun blast, pretty much nothing does as much dmg except the fire grenades are better against huge groups of mobs where the shotgun doesn't hit them all, but otherwise I couldn't find a single skill worth using other than flash grenade and frag rounds, hoping I can find something with 2h mace or staff maybe that is worth using to debuff or SOMETHING cuz I was getting kinda bored using the same skill and almost nothing else for everything

Like even with that bow having a 53% elemental modifier my lighting/fire/etc...shot skills all do less than the base frag round skill does

Nah there's a lot you can do to boost it, but I think using recommended skill gems will hold you back a bit. You gotta tinker with your build a bit
