Leaguestart FRoSS is virtually unchanged, Midgame FRoSS is almost entirely unchanged, the only thing that's mildly different is super high end int stack FRoSS, but even then you can just build defense stack instead of int stack, its a somewhat different build but it's still fine

I mean, in that case you're looking for something in the "defense to damage" ballpark, similar to FRoSS. Archmage is good, but is usually best played Heiro, rather than Witch. Very tanky though. You could also just build a tanky Kinetic Blast/Kinetic Fullisade build, which are both very strong and therefore allow for a lot more space for defensive investment.

as for tanky KB, yeah, any skill that scales very well is generally going to have most people trying to push it for maximum damage while very squishy, because people like looking at a big number, but turns out having a skill that's very strong also means that it can hit respectable DPS numbers on very low offensive investment, allowing for much higher defensive investment

Slayer is just a really good class for melee builds, and doesn't care if its elemental or physical or whatever. It also just doesn't benefit that much from the guarenteed ailment nodes on Elementalist, since the main benefit of those is being able to inflict an ailment with the "wrong" damage type, but ehit uses all three elemental damage types and you usually build it crit anyways, so you inflict every elemental ailment naturally
