It's a complicated aspect because she did have an illness in the games but they did not really show it until Shadow gens, funny enough. (Talking purely from the games themselves, not supplementary material)

we knew it from supplementary material but her illness was not a factor for either sa2's plot on itself neither Shadow 05's.

Don't get me wrong, having a condition for a character can make us feel more emphatic for said character (Forrest Gump with his initial leg condition and his slightly lower IQ than average, for example) but within the context of the games, Maria's illness was not something that factored into her use within the narrative of the games she was in until Dark Beginnings.
