Ironically what brought this one down for me was that the Jim Carrey scenes went on for too long imo, it felt kind of whiplash-ey with how much more serious the Shadow plot was

The pacing felt kind of all over the place, but any scene with Shadow was fantastic

Also. Honestly, did not like Gerald, he felt pretty barebones and carried a lot less gravitas compared to his game counterpart, especially considering we never even meet the latter

#

His final speech before his death and the shot of him chained up and defeated is so iconic, but here he's just a goofy silly jerk? Like we barely even see him with Maria, we have nothing to compare his behavior to, for all we know he was always a jerk

We know more about Walter for crying out loud

So the reveal that he was going for the Earth's destruction hit me way less hard than I thought it should. Especially with them getting rid of the family relation between him and Shadow.

I really want to like this, but that half of the movie really just drags it down for me. Anything with Shadow and Sonic was good though. I don't think there was a lack of setup for Shadow turning

Here are, in my opinion, the notable differences between the film and the novelization.

  • ||Unlike the film, there is no scene with Shadow breaking out of the prison island in the novel (it is instead contained to a brief mention in the second chapter).||
  • ||Unlike the film, the novel goes into detail about Shadow damaging Shibuya Crossing in the second chapter (in the film, it’s only mentioned as “a giant fireball”).||
  • ||Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Rockwell talk with each other on the helicopter in the novel regarding trust (in the film, it’s mainly brief and just wanting to go straight into the action).||
  • ||The novel shows Shadow handcuffing Sonic to a top of a building, unlike the film, where it is implied he did.||
  • ||Commander Walters shows videos of Project Shadow to Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles from his laptop at the Chao Garden instead of it being shown through flashbacks.||
  • ||The meteorite is just mentioned as having crashed into Earth instead of Oklahoma.||
  • ||Knuckles mentions that he had watched La Última Pasión while he was in Reno (he does not mention this in the film).||
  • ||Gerald Robotnik answers a question about the SEGA Master System instead of the longest word in the English language.||
  • ||Tails and Knuckles also come to Green Hills with Sonic for the Master Emerald instead of just Sonic going alone.||

Funnily enough, ||they leave out the ending in the novel for people to watch the movie to see how it ends lol||
