I think sonic team views magic as an "external source". Which is why a lot of characters powers are either sci fi stuff , super powers, spiritual stuff or a combination.

I can understand not wanting licensed partners to make sonic and co look like they are partially from the middle ages but honestly i think their reluctance maybe tied into an internal ideology about how these characters navigate the world.

That said, magic in fiction does not have to work like that at all. However im not incharge so shrugs

I went back and found the thread for the zoom call leak to see what else they said and they said it was part of a focus test done in oct 2024

So I scrubbed through looking through what went on during that timeframe

and I realized it's around the same time all those summit spire posts were cropping up including this vaguepost

Zavok and the rest of the six seek power and dominion over other while Infinite simply craves pure and total annihilation with no regards to others, holds no alligences to others and is even willing to brutalize himself to get there
