I don't think that's accurate regarding the music; in the case of Forces they definitely had their way, but in the context of Frontiers they framed it as if the beta testing saved the music direction

Infinite was a big threat.
He kicks Sonic's butt twice, beats Silver, killed the Avatars friends in a flackback and took over the world offscreen. The only mark against him is sparing the protagonists instead of trying to kill them.
In gameplay, Infinite is a push over when the player face him in boss fights.

I think from a narrative perspective Infinite didn't deserve to be that level of a threat, since his personal ambition of "be the strongest" isn't exactly as compelling as other villains that stand on the top of the food chain. Ideally he would have represented something with a little more narrative weight to it ala Mephiles or Black Doom, and his most immediate comparison, Metal Sonic, is a lot more compelling when reflecting off the protagonist of the series.
But at the same time, to a degree the simple trope of terrible people/frauds gaining quote-unquote legitimate power over others works fine enough, but the dynamic in exploring how that power or character is fraudulent is lost on us because of those issues in ludonarrative dissonance
Also the usual method shonen uses to discredit/dismantle those individuals is... very barebones in Forces' approach to the friendship angle 😭

We've never experience a boss fight against Metal Sonic with a souped up version of the player's moveset.

All of Mephiles' actions work in my eyes when he already understands everything that's about to transpire; he's the mind of Solaris lashing out with spiteful irony at the world around him, and even in supposed defeat can't help but laugh at it all
There is the question of what that exactly represents, but as the respective devil on the shoulder of everyone in the game, it gestures to concepts well outside the scope of a petty villain figuring things out as he goes

I feel like a new inner discovery is that 3D Sonic is inherently hard to do for the general public but at the same time Sonic fans love any semblance of 3D gameplay even if that gameplay is inherently shallow
That’s why we got 2D sections in all the post Secret Rings games lol
Colours is one of the best designed Sonic platformers but it’s hated (even by me in the past) because of its over abundance of 2D
And the sections of the “main acts” that people use as an example of all Colours should’ve been are the stages with automated segements and bland 3D
