you dont get stuff like a flipped hand with staff as experienced as this staff if they have enough time to review and fix the work

i will say i could def see the sonic design itself being more loose actually being an intentional design choice

Doesn't help that we also got Trio of Troubles around the same time and that looks marginally better

and yeah, difference between which budget it's running off of

bc theres absolutely no reason these guys couldnt draw sonic well

half of them were working on specifically the anime that inspired ohshima initially

ghibli films, lupin stuff, a lot of american cartoons in the 80s and 90s too

and the few bits that could have more time spent on them looked good too imo, like look at this tails still

the scratchy detail on the plane here feels like exactly the sorta thing that, if they had time, they'd add all across the animation

but they didnt

and in general id say a lot of the bad animation came from bad timing and the CG background animation being odd there

i think another reason the style isnt 100% working for me is that they were clearly asked to reference tyson hesse's sonic mania animation designs

as opposed to being allowed to properly explore their own design sensibilities

the actual character designer on the show drew sonic pretty well, and he was a lot more on-model on episodes that he animation directed

he drew the famous thumbs up sonic too

comparisons between animation directors here really shows you how much it affects the animation lol
