Okay, so my theory is that the movie has a Terminator plot. Metal Sonic was sent back to the past to destroy Sonic but Amy followed him to stop the Bad Future. Metal Sonic even spawns in the scene like a Terminator and Sonic CD has time travel so I think it works perfectly.

(I adore sa2 don't get me wrong, just I say that, because we didn't have proper screentime with Gerald within that game's narrative, the last story had to compensate with exposition dumps to clarify what is going on and why Shadow acted the way he did)
