because there are many variables changed, it would not work the same

So I better just wait and see how it works on it's own at first, meditate it and see if it is worth based on that

If I had my way I'd want a full remake of the original story grasping all of the themes, messages, and most important moments but possibly expanded to be even more likable and suited for a movie experience rather than a game's (and that last part is important, since I often hold the story up really high for the games themselves, but it doesn't actually service a movie in the same way)

But since that's already out the window it might as well be just another individual story to be judged based on how much it brings to the table on its own merits

So it's both following the standards of the original story while also trying to avoid them as much as possible

That's mainly the kind of thing I'm talking about with how Sonic depicts its stories and universe or even those past plot beats now

Like there's a fair chance anything made today won't even have a GUN soldier hold a gun

I've talked about this before but Unleashed creates a huge disconnect for me because the Earth being destroyed into these giant chunks is presented as this huge, catastrophic event of massive proportions in the intro of the game

But the actual story handles it as merely a glorified obstacle

I mean I would chalk that up to a different kind of dissonance; in theory it doesn't matter how grounded the aesthetic is - if the world is destroyed like that, it's likely to result in oceans disappearing and mass havok no matter the world

Though I guess the grounded aesthetic kind of makes it less likely to have mystical explanations in universe or something

Hes supposed to be this very passionate scientist that crashes our and turns into a abusive, manipulative, misanthropic and destrive old man. That said, these movies arent the games. Gerald is dead in the games and wont be influenced by these films because hes dead. So there is litterally nothing to worry about.

If theres any influences to worry about its the animals, and so far there hasnt been much besides lighting effects, glowing eyes, and sonic being written more dorkishly at times

The thing that bothers me about the arc stuff with these movies is always how they keep selling the idea to people, and it's like... we can't judge it until we see it for movie 3, but there isn't much in terms of actual character progression from what we've had so far. Sonic fans who keep getting sold on the idea as if "He'll become more like the games!" doesn't help matters either

The basics are there, it's presentable, but if you're going to make a deal about arcs as a necessity, I really wish they capitalized off it more

Cause at his core he's just laid back like that, too where he doesn't take much serious on a casual level unless it's warranted/something that calls for it.

The humor isn't the sticking point exactly; it kinda sucks that it's the staple, but if it had different writing it wouldn't be bad

When people say "oh he's matured so much he's not the same person he was before" then it kinda sticks out

But that's on the conversation surrounding the movies, not the character itself

And you can tell people are waiting for this; the idea that Sonic would lose Tom, would be forced to move away from him out of responsibility, finally "killing" Eggman etc. is stuff that the movie fandom actively wants out of the character

But that's not what the movies are about so shrug

The actual arcs that we do get are signposted by the scenes earlier in the movies where they attempt to convey the theme of the story, and the finale is Sonic finally doing the thing he was told to do, at least from how Sonic 3 appears

Sonic movie 1 is the outlier in that formula but idk if that makes it stronger or still the same

I think it's funny how he had legitimate points about how SEGA basically disregards the older demographic of Sonic in the way games like Zelda or Mario or any other successful long running series do not, but then immediately sabotages his argument by implying they need to appeal to their possible new "non-fan" mindsets and interests in other series, rather than building on what those people used to love about the past games as a cornerstone.

And he might be right that those fans are lost now, but... that just means they should build that cornerstone around the elements that fandom still rallies around, like the past stories, characters, and even modern gameplay now lol
