too late to set the sonic films back then ofc, but locking the needle drops to specifically the early noughties and giving the film a specific sound that way would be bloody great

Mutant mayhem was the revival in a new era after the two live action installments that tried a more serious route, and then tried to course correct. Main catch was that the teens acted like teenagers, compared to past installments and kickstarted a new continuity
Transformers one has the starting base of Optimus and Megatron origins, and being placed strictly on cybertron without human presence.
Also done after like..a decade of a steady decline on the creative team (more specifically, when you have Michael bay on board)
TLDR;
If an animated Sonic movie was done, I’m thinking that it’s gonna be a tad different in aspects just like the live action films are in their respective ways. Cause I don’t think ‘Le accuracy’ works (outside of Mario, who’s also given that thumbs up)

Live action or animated, due to their inception/respective stories.
Setting aside knuckles, I do think it's a smart strategy to go with a slow burn.
The mario movie doesn't inherently have anything to lose. Biggest animation studio name. Biggest game company.
Story so simple and streamlined, it's damn near in every game and any element you add to it is just enough without looking unrecognizable because it's familiar/recycled in some way.
That ain't bad, because the mario movie ain't really trying to go beyond what it set itself out to be ofc.
I may be biased as a sonic fan, in saying this next part.
But in comparison/contrast, the narratives and world you're settled with adapting in sonic is a bit more to take in/flesh out at least.
When you simplify it, that's when you get something like Sonic Prime.
