From Famitsu’s 2024 Game Developer Interview Series.

In an interview with Famitsu, Takashi Iizuka, now Sonic Creative Officer at Sega of America, was able to air his thoughts on the franchise in 2023, as well as his hopes for Sonic in 2024.

2024 Keyword: Transmedia

Iizuka:

This [coming] year will see the release of new [Sonic Prime] episodes on Netflix, as well as the third film! We want to promote Sonic from multiple angles.

Transmedia is a broad term, but in Sega’s context, it refers to promoting the brand across multiple physical & digital mediums, be it in games, films, digital experiences, or merch. While Iizuka’s hint for the next year was (naturally) vague, it reminds us of Sonic's incoming ventures outside games. We are yet to see what else lies in store for Sonic fans across the globe in 2024.

2023 Recap:

Iizuka:

In 2023, we focused on the theme of “Friends”.

  • Addition of Amy to Sonic Origins Plus
  • Release of third update to Sonic Frontiers, adding a playable story for 3 characters (Tails, Knuckles, Amy)
  • Release of 4-player game Sonic Superstars
    Did you guys enjoy that?

Have you had the chance to play Sonic Superstars? We hope you enjoy Sonic’s multiplayer experience by gathering with family & friends this holiday season. Sonic Dream Team is now available on Apple Arcade too.

Acknowledging Sonic’s releases in the past year, Iizuka encourages readers to play the most recent Sonic releases over the holidays.
