I think the gun being shot at Maria in Shadow 05 kind of mislead people of why the death is important in a sense.

It's not that she is shot what is important, it never was. It's that she died due to the goverment fearing/wanting to control the project

Maria can die of a decease and still keep the point of sa2 if she dies because they could not heal her in time when G.U.N. entered the base.
