So SEGA commissioned Rafa to make Classic Knuckles/Amy models for some toys (idk for sure), and they’ve just had these lying around for a while.

Flash forward, and Arzest is commissioned to make a new classic sonic game with a 3D look. they’re given the previously stored away models, which the studio uses as reference for wholly original models specifically made for the game

Meanwhile said SEGA models are used for Origins’ islands, and Origins Plus by proxy when the update happens

so while i will mostly play Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, and 3 AIR, Origins will be how I'll play CD on it

i don't so much know the exact details on why but no matter what compatibility layer, it launches with an error, but Sonic 1 Forever and 2 Absolute worked flawlessly with basically no tinkering

might be more so that 1 Forever and 2 Absolute are more complete program "containers" rather than the sort of hacky way the vanilla RDSK is opened on Windows, but CD doesn't have a similar version

Amy might be my new favorite character to play as in Origins

I love her mid air hammer attack, it's like the Instashield but it lasts longer and I think it has a bigger hit box cause like I was able to take out the Spring Yard boss before he even took out the 2nd block

She may not be able to use the elemental shield moves but she makes up for it by not having the drop dash which I don't like- well ok it technically is the drop dash but better because you don't lose momentum and you don't roll into a ball which are the main reasons I never liked the drop dash. It's sorta like they put the super peelout in that move which is a better move imo

This might sound strange, but Origins is the most fun I've had with Sonic 1 in a long time. I grew up with the GBA port, so that's a low bar, and a lot of it can probably be attributed to Christian's team, but it's nice to finally play a competent version of the game on console. (I am aware that there were plenty of previous ports, they flew under my radar till it was too late.)

I hadn't bought the game until Plus came out, which is why the opinion is new now.

The cartridge has that plus on it, why not just put the whole thing on the cartridge?

Tbh if I had to guess, prob cuz sega wanted smaller cartridges (at least for switch) but still that means anyone who buys the physical version after the switch eshop is down, will be unable to access any plus content

This is small and only applies to physical switch users, but its still not great

Also because if the person doesn't have the space on their switch then it could cause problems

Because they're putting the burden of storing the plus parts on the consumers console, instead of having it be in the cartridge

that being said, it was likely due to the fact that they didn't want to shell out for the 8 gb cartridges

though that being said, nintendo might be to blame for why companies in general tend to do this

supposedly a 32gb switch cartridge costs 60% more than a 50gb ps4 disc. 22 dollars of a 60 dollar game would be directly pocketed by nintendo just due to cartridge and liscencing fees

so it seems nintendo gouges the hell out of the price for their proprietary cartridge which would push companies to pursue the cheapest option and cut corners where they can.
apparentyl the 8gb cartridges are the equivalent of the 50gb ps4 disc so that's likely the reason why they just buy use those and make you download the rest with a code.
this also has the side benefit of making sure you need to buy a copy firsthand, which was pretty common back in the day.

it doesn't excuse anything, but it's pretty crappy on both sides
